I need a cheap machine for uni, I already have a good PC at home so it would be used only for programming when outside (I plan to use debian or linux mint) what should I pick?
>>
>>101459434
My XPS 13 has a 500 nit screen that's usable outside in direct sunlight and the 16:10 and 4k make it even nicer for programming, browsing, movies, etc. Only downside is you'll hate using any screen that doesn't have the pixel density.
Got mine for $150 used

Literally had a tardspergout after missing a insane deal on a $550 P15 Gen 1 (i9-10885H, RTX4000, 32/512GB, they literally sold 23 in the span of 5 hours) that had me punching my 10 year old Elitebook 840 G3 so hard it cracked the mobo and won't post so I bought this to replace it for now
>>
>>101460791
typical
but remember less is more
>>
>>101459258
>costs less than $5
>uses up WWAN slot
>speeds up your boot times
>makes your main drive last longer
What's the catch?

Is the t440p the best budget thinkpad?

>Cheap, can be found for $40 if you get lucky with an auction $65 USD average
>$60 drop in 1080p 100% SRGB screen replacement with no gay edp display converter cable with the chip
>Replaceable CPU, all the way to i7 quad core
>Replaceable RAM
>Replaceable Storage(SSD and sata nvme are god tier placement)
>Replaceable hotswappable battery
>Replaceable literally everything, Easy to take apart(Don't have to take the whole thing apart to replace CPU, I'm look at you X220 and X series)
>Ethernet port where as newer thinkpads literally gutted this essential feature.
>SD card reader
>Mini display port
>Great port selection

The only downsides are the chiclet keyboard which isn't as full as the original and that horrible trackpad, but at least the trackpad can be fixed and love it or hate it, the keyboard still is very good. It's a very well designed laptop
>>
>>101462565
its ok if you replace trackpad with the one that has buttons
i prefer x230
>>
Anyone know if there's a source of cheap 1.8" SATA SSDs that I could throw in my X301?
Or do those cheap ebay mSATA to uSATA converters actually work?
>>
>>101462579
Why do you prefer the x230?
>>
>>101459258
are the integrated radeon GPUs semi-decent? Not to play anything fancy but still want to be able to play some crpgs and shit.

also I've not been paying attention for a decade or so, did lenovo bounce back after de-engineering the thinkpad?

where ever the wwan slot is located, doubt it'll have airflow
>drive idles at 60c
>>
>be me
>need laptop for college
>go down the rabbit hole of MacBooks
>decide on 15” air
>need 16gb ram because 8 is worthless for my hobby stuff
>might as well get a MacBook Pro at that price point with m3 pro and 18gb
>already spending 1900 might as well spend 200 more to get the 1tb with more cores
>need Apple care to protect investment
>2500 dollars later
>realize it’s too bulky and valuable to lug around to school and use in public spaces, too awkward to use in my car. I like to study in my car at parks and at the library
>looking at iPad air with Magic Keyboard for general school stuff taking notes reading textbooks
>keyboard is too tiny to use comfortably
>13 inch is 899, plus 300 for the larger keyboard
>weighs 2.7lbs
>MacBook Air 13 is 899 on sale and the same weight
>buy MacBook Air to be my beater every day driver college laptop
>I now have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air

I guess this makes sense

The 2700U in my A285 runs stuff like Fallout New Vegas or Half Life 2 Ep 2 just fine, that's with the original Vega 10 IGP chipset.

>also I've not been paying attention for a decade or so, did lenovo bounce back after de-engineering the thinkpad?
A lot of models have shit like soldered RAM and soldered USBC charging ports, keyboards reportedly aren't as good (mine is fine IMO, can't speak for newer models), but if you don't care about that they're okay.

Tech illiterate luddite here.

T420
>i5-2520M 2.5GHZ
>4 GB ram
>300 GB HDD

X240
>i3-4030U 1.9GHZ
>8 GB ram
>500 GB HDD

Both are $99, 99% chance of only being used to browse the internet and play videos, often go full retard with tabs. High chance of battery use. Please advise.
>>
>>101462996
Yes, you can do some modern games at 720p 30-60fps low settings.

Obviously depends on what cpu you buy, 2000-5000 series have the same vega GPU but newer ones clocked up higher and higher, 6000 series is twice as fast rdna2 IGP.

A higher end model usually has a better GPU, 4750u has more shaders than 4650u and clocks higher etc
>>
>>101463180
You're taking notes on an iPad?

You could have got a $200 Android tablet and $50 bluetooth keyboard from Amazon. Instead you wasted $3500. This is your brain on Apple

t420 and slap in max ram and ssd
you can buy new battery from kingenser on aliexpress
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32974978488.html
>>
>>101463994
T420 would be fine for that, pretty sure you can get an Ultrabay battery for them for extra battery life, but can you afford an SSD and RAM upgrade right off the bat for it? Even a 128GB SSD and 8GB RAM will make it a lot more usable.
>>
One of the USB-A ports on my X13 broke yesterday. Now I can get power from it but no data. This leaves me with no USB ports at all on the right side. Nice "business experience." It's only been a few months since I bought it too. This laptop was running hot yesterday, so I'm pretty sure it overheated and the data lines desoldered itself from the board. It's right next to heat exhaust.

What's the fastest cpu I can put in this thing without it catching fire? I don't mind corebooting.
>>
What is the deal with battery replacements? I want to buy a model with a removable battery, but only if I can squirt at least 3 hours out of it, browsing and file stuff.
I have E15 and T490 so I was looking at t480
>>
>>101465449
They'll take a quad-core, but if it has nVidia graphics as well you'll probably cook it
>>
I need a really reliable, powerful used thinkpad for work with good battery life/switchable batteries and a monitor on the larger side. How about P50? What do you recommend? Budget is lets say 500 bucks

>buy an e14 gen2 because faster as upgrade from t440p
>ssd and cpu is much faster but the e14 gen2 lacks any soul™
>t440p has 4(!) USB slots also 3 SSDs, battery lasts 6-8 hours while the e14 only has 2 USB slots and 2 slots for very expensive nvme SSDs also new battery only lasts like 4 hours

How's your evening going, fellow ThinkPad autists?

Any advice on sourcing a decent thermal pad?
