Where do I begin to learn philosophy and best-practices for package generation.

I'm starting to make my own private alpine apk packages. There's documentation about the tooling, but I find the guidance on how to structure packages to be a bit lacking.

There's also some weird link that I wasn't expecting, like why can't I export files to /opt.

Anyone know where I can start?

If they aren't in your configuration they are either pulled in by something else that is in your config or you installed them trough nix-env. On nixos you *never* want to install packages through nix-env. If you are not sure where in your config something comes from, use

With that said it's pretty poor in that regard, think you could try inkscape if you want something in the foss area.
Outside of that only one I know with good text tools that is free(but not foss) is Medibang. Does well with text, unsurprisingly since its made for comics/manga, though it can be a bit annoying with its advertising.

Good call on the bookmarks. I don't use them enough. I also don't hoard tabs, though. From an ergonomic or habit-building perspective, I can appreciate your opinion. Given that I don't share them, I think I will allow history. There's a general thread I like that I rotate out when a new one is up. I don't believe I'm exposing myself to anything by allowing that.

Not every manager is a retard in a suit, you will see managers with "AI Experience" coming soon.
Making AI was the dumbest thing programmers could have done.
>>
>>102035953
linux is pretty painful for programming.
as a C++ programmer I would tell you that the linux package manager is fine for C libraries, it makes no sense for C++ libraries, because C++ libraries change (and add breaking changes) while C libraries are pretty stiff.
I would normally say the advantage linux has over C++ is valgrind, but I found out you can use valgrind with wine apps, but I haven't tested it yet (and windows has wsl to run valgrind with).
because I like making graphical applications, valgrind as well as Address sanitizer bundled with Leak sanitizer, no way to disable other than with a environment variable (linux only), they will give false positives to all graphics API's. You can suppress them, but leak sanitizer will still show a report telling you suppressions.
And don't sleep on address sanitizer, it's the only useful tool for debugging C and C++ code, since it has zero false positives (except for the leak, not asan, that's lsan), and ubsan is also cool.
I don't care about leaks, it's usually pretty hard to make a leak in C++.
Overall if you are interested in using C++, I would suggest just using windows with msvc and use the vs studio project file + vcpkg until you feel like you need to learn cmake to port your code to linux.
And if you want to make games, you probably should use any game engine anyways.
If you are not interested in C or C++, or making games, you are lucky soul. But you should have mentioned it in your post baka, explain what you want.

>>
>>102036099
It's not dumb but the people with "AI Experience" are all grifters, that's for sure.

Future programmers will be data scientists. You need somebody that understands how AI works, how to debug it and train it, how to understand why it went wrong and how to fix it, etc.

Interestingly the UNIX Stack Exchange website recommends adding it to /etc/environment
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/680483/how-to-add-qt-qpa-platformtheme-qt5ct-environment-variable-in-arch-linux

This is probably because things like the portals are spawned via DBus so might not necessarily pick up your environment variables properly. On KDE this isn't an issue because they take care to start DBus themselves or import the environment properly into Systemd, etc, but in other environments it is.

They are not and that does not matter, with both Skyrim and FO4 the unofficial patches popped up from the very beginning. Bethesda used to made such a terrible effort patching bugs that they were a necessity otherwise you would most likely end up with a corrupted save (thanks to the fact that scripts are saved in your savegame) after playing a few hundred of hours.
Anyways i just looked up and it exists: https://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/8939-relzwipz-unofficial-starfield-patch/
Same team from Skyrim and FO4 Unofficial patch

Looking at the changelog I can also see that there are a couple script fixes... After decades bethesda hasn't learned anything

You can also see that they're reverting fixes (precisely because Bethesda has been patching them).

You are right though, they probably won't bother fixing everything except the game breaking bugs.

Yeah that has always been done, no point on fixing something twice.
Basically if something finally gets fixed on Bethesda's end then it gets reverted in order to avoid conflicts.

>You are right though, they probably won't bother fixing everything except the game breaking bugs.
Yup, you should check the logs for the older games, it's insane the amount of bugs that Bethesda simply chooses to ignore.

Anyways I hope this info helps someone, maybe you could try the patches.

I became "obsessed" with these patches after my very first character for Skyrim (v1.0, 2011) basically died on its own (the save file became so corrupted the game would crash to desktop with no exceptions every 5mins~ or so)

Use a Windows VM. You really don't want to do Windows development on Linux unless it's something like Dotnet (the cross-platform version, not the one with proprietary Windows specific APIs) or Mono.
>>
This is fucking retarded, why is qemu only passing through half of my l3 cache, no matter which cores I assign to the vm? Unless I'm the one being retarded and it's purely visual.

How lightweight are Sway and Hyprland (with visual effects disabled) compared to GNOME, KDE and COSMIC?
>>
>>102038844
Much more so. As they're much simpler environments with less moving background parts they're less harsh on your hardware, really like any window manager compared to a desktop environment. Hyprland's whole deal is basically being a WM with pizazz and pretty looks while still being performant, while Sway is basically i3 ported to Wayland. When COSMIC actually makes it to full primetime I'm expecting it to really shake up the DE world with how it performs compared.

You can't. But you could start keeping a record of them by not limiting the size of .bash_history assuming you're using bash and then counting that.

There being many distros comes from the Linux's kernel's open source nature, among pretty much everything else you use to build around it to make a functioning desktop.
If you don't wanna think about it, use Linux Mint.

ubuntu 2404 has some great ease of use from the get go (should i really be so excited about keyboard backlight control from the os?). but its very on the nose with its crash and crash reporting.
havent put fedora 40 on anything modern yet, so if theres the same ease of use from the get to, forgive me for only mentioning ubuntu. if fedora 40 has been crashing, it hasnt told me. when you do updates its default is to make you restart to apply them. gnome software center has come a long way in stability and telling you what software is rated well.

Rsync will do the job but make sure to read the man page so that you dont screw something up when it comes to deleting files
Usually the command everyone uses for just copying files is -AaXx and also -v if you want really verbose output otherwise you can do something like --info=progress2
The man page does a good job at documenting all the different args

Also, you gotta change the array in the code to have a set of URLs (instead of the array being determined by newline-delimited text in a TEXTAREA or something). Audio files in the array can be ./audio.mp3 or http://10.0.0.113/file.mp3. playmp3s.htm code works in https://htmledit.squarefree.com/ - and I have a copy of that website hosted in Apache.

Well i do have a PI 4 that isn't doing anything rn, so I could use that for this first one.

> what have got planned for it?

Mostly just an excercise to learn how NixOS workrs but also with the goal of (hopefully) getting dynamic DNS and mail-in-a-box server set up on it.

So recently I got hooked to spacedesk using my android tablet as secondary monitor to extend
> being able to split audio for comms and general use
> touchscreen capability

Been looking at alternatives for linux, since from my research on google, spacedesk doesn't work on wine.
Have you guys tried something like this? Been eyeing on weylus, at the very least the touchscreen works, deskreen works well too but needs beefy connection.
Are there anything come close to spacedesk for linux?

Any of you Linux users use art or production programs? Heard Wayland ain't so good for tablets either but is more modern for the system.
Never touched a distro, but considering in the future.

gentoo. those are the only four distros worth using.

How can I keep a window focused in wayland/hyprland? I've tried windowrule = stayfocused, ^("app")$ but I don't think it works. Either it doesn't work or I have no idea what to put in "app", whether or not it's supposed to be a keyword in the actual name of the tab in hyprland or if it's the name I would put into the terminal to launch the application
>>

I guess I had to use windowrulev2, my problem now is I wanted both windows focused/updating information at one time simoultaneously

youre gonna need to throw the disk into another windows system and run the ntfs disk checker on it, i think. dont try any linux tools to repair ntfs, unless you like double breaking ntfs.

Just got CachyOS set up, last time I used arch I don’t remember it not connecting to an ntfc drive, do I have to do a big workaround to get that going? Or can I just install something quick.

lol just got the same error in arch. Didn’t have this issue with Zorin or any other distro before.

On Debian, are there benefits to using webext-ublock-origin-firefox over installing uBO regularly? I noticed the repo version is around a year old, but would it update to latest from within Firefox?
>>
>>102052207
I tried it and only the "99synaptic" file has been modified according to properties, but weirdly nothing in the file changed
There's always only one line there and nothing more:
APT::Install-Recommends "true";

It won't update. It's pinned to that version. There are no benefits to using it.

I should add the reason it won't update is because it's built by Debian, has a different id and naturally isn't signed by Mozilla.

Any web extensions you install from Debian directly are like this.

how do i know if a motherboard is gnu/linux friendly?
Like will it suppot bt and wifi in the kernel or do I need to get special drivers?
>>
>>102053384
Does it let you boot operating systems?

That's pretty much the extent to it. Other than the firmware there's not a lot preventing Linux from running assuming it's using all standard hardware (e.g if it has Realtek audio and Intel Wireless, etc, then all of that is just going to work on Linux)

You can assume that most X86 motherboards are not going to give you issues. The situation is different with ARM crap and other embedded shit but with the humble X86 PC we for the most part enjoy a large amount of compatibility.

yeah probably. I am window shopping. It says it has a Intel Wifi card. So I assume that is just going to work out of the box on linux.

I bought 2 wifi sticks before and didn't check if they're supported. I had to do some weird stuff to get them working.

Intel will just work. Same for LAN, Intel makes the best on-board Ethernet, Realtek is supported fine too but their hardware is crap.

He was asking about the usual: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.
>>102053592
>Intel Wifi card
>work out of the box on linux
It does. Note that some "libre/freedom" distributions they may not provide the required firmware blobs but it's an easy fix.
Bluetooth: hci0: Found device firmware: intel/ibt-18-16-1.sfi
iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: loaded firmware version 46.ea3728ee.0 9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode op_mode iwlmvm

So yeah, a couple of blobs. One for
>Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 5(802.11ac) Wireless-AC 9x6x [Thunder Peak] (rev 29)
and one for
>Intel Corp. Wireless-AC 9260 Bluetooth Adapter
>>
>>102053650
>It does. Note that some "libre/freedom" distributions they may not provide the required firmware blobs
If you're running one of those it probably won't work anyway because they tend to rip out the firmware loading code altogether so that it can't accidentally be loaded. In their view broken hardware is better than non-free hardware.
>>
>>102053384
You have to look up the chip on the wifi/bt module and make sure it's not Realtek or Broadcom.
>>
>>102053609
They practice security by air gap mostly. Linux, the kernel, will always favor enabling people to do what they want over security.

why does swap never seem to clear itself out entirely when it's done being used? Even if I close absolutely everything it will decrease it by only a couple hundred megs, the only way to completely clear it out seems to be logging out and back in. Is it lying to me and it's not really that high? I'm assuming if it maxes out it will drop all the caches it seems to be saving and not oom me

>>
>>102053737
>why does swap never seem to clear itself out entirely when it's done being used?
Because it's not "done being used". It'll never page out something that isn't being used because that's detrimental to your RAM.

Of course if you have something leaking memory like a sieve then you now have a situation where your Swap is full of memory that will never be paged out. You can force it by running swapoff and swapon again.

Yeah, never understood that part. Like if users decide to get proprietary blobs requiring devices or not, it's their decision to make.
Surely Linux-Libre could make sense for an application that NEVER EVER requires blobs - like a VM. Is it really smaller or faster even?
>>102042868
>SBC
Their hardware and kernel support is very random so you must evaluate individual devices.
>SBC and distributions
If and when those things make it to the Linux userland, they all work just as good or bad. Again: check out distribution kernel support.
(prepare your anus for some crashes though, I've seen them on multiple ARM platforms. Be it a $8 chink SBC or a virtual server running on some ARM server (bad binaries probably))
>>
>>102053630
You have to be careful with checking the specs too because the same model will have different hardware snuck in. My motherboard has 3 different versions and it’s printed in small font in the corner. V1 is Realtek V2 is Intel, etc. pissed me off.
>>
>>102053852
>V1 is Realtek V2 is Intel
Heh. They probably went with Realtek because it's cheap and then realised it's cheap crap that's costing them a bunch of RMAs and support requests and went with Intel instead.

If you buy a high end motherboard it's almost always going to be Intel.
I don't use Wireless though and my motherboard does still have 2.5 Gbit Realtek LAN which is awful, worse than the gigabit Intel LAN it also comes with even. When I next upgrade I'll be looking for a board with 10 Gbit LAN. Most of those tend to use Aquantia which I've had good luck with.
