Since the X60 takes a full size card, I would specifically recommend the AR9380. Also, I hope you're running libreboot because there is a whitelist with the stock BIOS that won't let you had unapproved cards.

>>
>>102321934

>>
>>102321923
Yes. Fun fact, that was Apple's preferred card on their high end macbook pro around 2009.
>>102321934
Having used both AR9462 and AR9380 in an X60, I would say the AR9380 actually ran slightly cooler, at least that was my experience having librebooted about a dozen of these over the years.
>>
>>102321936
The heatsink on the AR9380 is incredibly nice and helps dissipate heat since it's got double the surface area of the AR9462. They both run relatively cool compared to the AR92xx series, so it's not a big deal either way. I use the AR9462 on the X200 and T400 and it's fine.

I haven't had an X60 in years, I'm simply telling you my personal experience. Like I said, there wasn't much difference overall and OP probably wouldn't notice given how negligible it was.
>>102322389
Yeah it was fine. The main issue now is the X60 is an 18 year old laptop, so don't expect to be doing much modern stuff with it.

Went for the 9380 because shipping for the adapter would have cost extra. If it's still too hot I'll just return it and go for the 9462. Thanks again for the suggestion.

works well enough for browsing 4chan when wfh, and if it weren't for the hot palm rest it would be a joy to use. Love the tactile sensation of the keyboard.

I flashed the EC and corebooted on my x230 few years ago. I swapped the original keyboard for the classic one. I now realize I like the x230 original keyboard more. Do I need to flash official Lenovo BIOS back to change the EC for x230 keyboard layout again? Do I need to do an external flash with my raspberry pi again or can I flash it with just software?

Its a bit high if youre in USA, but where you placed the $ says you're not... So I'm gonna say its a fair price if youre in the EU. These can be optioned with a WQHD screen, but my eyes found that bothersome in 14" so FHD is good (hope its the one with the privacy guard).
On my price guide, i have that as "high" being $300.
These have soldered RAM, so 16GB is the middle, 8Gb is base and 32GB max.
The average sold low price is $151 and medium is $208.
$350 is the price for reputable sellers and those who guarantee a warranty (not saying other seller prices dont).

>>102321828
Look at the T15g series, those come with 2070 or 3070 for gen 1 or gen 2. Its basically a P15 w/ gamer graphics.
Note if you're buying on eBay, searching "T15g" will get you results from the base spec T15 machine that can come with an iGPU.

If you go to my price guide site and click onto the spreadsheet, I have a curated under cocaine and duress a specific search to find T15g systems while segregating the shitty ones.

X1 Extreme Gen 4 and Gen 5 came with RTX 3050 to 3080, but some do come with intel graphics instead. :) Less CPU cooling.

>>102322569
>over a thousand laptops on this list
That's going to take a long as fucking time to find out...
The X390 it lists says i7-8565U CPU, so thats Whiskey lake
A cheap ass one starts around $150 and goes up to $240 for my recommendation, you can spend more if you want.
Just be sure to get that CPU, or maybe another Whiskey lake unit, note some X390 systems come with a previous CPU, Comet lake. However last time I did my price guide in July of 2024, there was only 9 comets sold against 175 Whiskey cocks, so just be a bit catious.

Hmmm.. Wasn't there an option to lock or unlock that internal flashing? I have a bad feeling I have it locked if that was the case.. I haven't looked into the thing yet so is undoing the patch just just reflashing it with the options changed to not change kb layout? Flashing original BIOS doesn't reset the EC? If it doesn't why couldn't one just reflash the EC after corebooting?

you can use thinkpad-ec without coreboot therefore bios is not related to ec

Having owned a W700ds, the big dissapointment was the flex in the keyboard, the chassis around the damn thing isn't like a T60, it allows some squish.
But fuck that thing was massive.
The Dell Precision M6400 is better if you want Core 2 Quad and 16:10, with it you had no GPU whitelist, 4 RAM slots, had better screens, Covet edition if you wanted that, and will support mSATA SSDs if you need that third drive.

No, I think a xx30 generation Thinkpad will do better, nVidia FX series would get shat on by 2nd or 3rd gen core graphics, unless you really needed a dGPU alongside an iGPU for like streaming/video recording.

That's what I did. Reflash with Lenovo bios (+ stock EC) -- the vulnerable one in 1vyprep, I don't remember the version (1.62?). Start from scratch.

I used the same Hamish EC mod flash and turned the keyboard patch off but turned the others for whitelist/battery on. Then reflash custom bios again with your preferred method. There may be a smarter way to go about it.

The screen I bought arrived in a week but yeah it looks like the kingsener batteries take at least 2 month to arrive. Still- if you find kingsener in an european shop then go for it. Although I imagine it's not much better than GreenCell since it's all chink shit with (probably) the same battery cells anyway. The best option is to find an original battery but good luck finding that 16 years after the laptop was released.

I wish it was possible to just swap the cells. I guess it wouldn't be really safe but I would take the risk.

Recently purchased a refurbished T480. Mostly happy with the purchase. It's in excellent cosmetic condition, came with a new SSD and I assume newer battery, lasted seven hours on a full charge.

I'm disappointed how hot it runs for a machine that's clean and dust free and that has alot of clearance at the back for airflow because its elevated a bit. Idles around 50 to 55C which to me is quite high, I am used to idle temps 10C less than that. Would they have replaced the thermal paste on a referb? This is my first time buying such a machine so I don't know what is all part of the referb process. Speccy also likes to jump 10C into the 60s for a second and come back down, so I question if that program is monitoring the temp correctly.
It only comes with 2 USB ports, would have preferred three.

Unrelated to the hardware, Windows 10...it's quite fat is it not? The OS is about 37GB in size. I went ahead and disabled a few things. On a fresh boot it's already using about 3.5 gigs of memory which feels insane to me. And well over 100 processes - with Windows 7 I had no where near that many on start up, unless Windows 10 is counting processes differently.
Don't tell me to get rid of Win10, this laptop is for someone else who only knows Windows.

It's good quality. But, It's the extreme anti-thesis of what /tpg/ want

>All soldered. /tpg/ mostly talks on parts, mods, customization
>Tablet = touchscreen = Linux nightmare. look at which OS is the majority of this general. Tablets are pretty much Windows, might as well get LTSC one.

This detachable is actually perfect for normie college use
>more than enough for doing assignments: essays, presentations, spreadsheets.

>small, easy to carry & store, compact for bit of watching videos on the move
Besides, those looking for detachable tablets already own primary PC (desktops/workstations); detachables for on the go.

Hello anons I'm looking for a thinkpad mostly for programming and browsing I found these :
T14 Intel i5-10310U 256 SSD 16 GB 300 euro
T490 14" i5-8365U 16GB/512GB 250 euro
T490s Intel i7-8665U 256 SSD 8GB 300 euro
T490 Intel i5-8365U 128GB 16GB 210 euro
T480 8 ram 256 ssd 250 euro
X1 Carbon 7th Gen i5 , 8 ram 256 ssd 250 euro
which one should I buy ? they are all refurbished some are in good conditions some are excellent I don't think this matters as It's just based if the laptop has scratches and whatnot
>>
>bought a new t480 for 250 bucks
im surprised there are still new ones around
>>
>>102345585
>what screen tho?
Carbon is most likely to have one that doesn't make you want to claw your eyes out.
>>
>>102345997
they all are 1080 except for the t480 and the x1
>>
>>102346029
1080 doesn't mean a lot by itself. TN panels are awful and some of the IPS panels are better than others.

So does anyone think I should be concerned with the idle temp?
>On a fresh boot it's already using about 3.5 gigs of memory which feels insane to me.
It's actually closer to 2.5 to 3 gigs on startup.
Despite disabling Edge on start up via about:config, it keeps undoing itself and keeps running in the background on start up (several processes). Never had a problem like that before, usually once stuff is shut off from starting on start up it stays that way.

>>102338217
>>102338310
Had the laptop on my lap for most of the day today and also on a carpet surface, unplugged on battery and it keep detecting and undetecting the battery, and the screen kept shutting off and on when I moved. At one point when I lifted the laptop slightly when it was on carpet, the battery would connect, and when lowed back down it would say no battery present...but still stay running. I am wondering if the battery wasn't fully clicked and locked into place and slight movements were causing it to disconnect but not enough for it to fully shut down.

The Thinkpad logo on the letter i on the lid is lit when the running and flashes when sleeping. However the same thing on the palm rest does not. Is something broken, or is this not a thing that lights up on this laptop?

>>102338710
As I said the laptop is for someone else, I am just setting it up for them.
>>
>>102346335
>So does anyone think I should be concerned with the idle temp?
Probably not. I'd be more concerned with you not doing s fresh OS install yourself and trusting what you were given. Go visit >>>/g/fwt.

>Is something broken, or is this not a thing that lights up on this laptop?
No, this is normal.

>Battery connecting/disconnecting with slight movement
Send it back.
>>
>>102346380
>I'd be more concerned with you not doing s fresh OS install yourself and trusting what you were given.
How many times do I need to state its not for me? The laptop is for someone else, who only knows Windows. Windows 10 Pro was installed fresh on August 29th. It was sold and came to me yesterday. It's a load of work off of me that its ready to go.

>Send it back.
As stated I don't think the battery was properly locked into place, could have become slightly disturbed while shipping. I pushed both locking tabs into place and they clicked. I'll monitor it and hope its okay.

Well, in the ad we get stock photos so that isn't helpful but that isn't always helpful anyway. And no serial number because this is a refurbisher and they have a lot of them so we can't look it up on Lenovo's site. We know it's 1080p and not a touchscreen or it would probably be advertised as such. What we can do is look up the psref and see what the options were to narrow things down. In doing so we know it's not a TN panel because those only came in 768p for this model. It's not advertised as the touchscreen model so it's not that one. This means it's a tossup between the IPS FHD panels with varying brightness and sRGB accuracy. The lesser one is 250 nits and 45% sRGB which is pretty bad.

In conclusion, IPS but it's a gamble if it's the good one or the shitty one and odds are it ain't the good one.
>>
>>102349196
Practically, only singular item listings have SN listed (mostly these listings tend to be on high-end devices), never on bulks.
Haven't checked on Lenovo yet. But in my case for Dell, you can know exactly the detailed technical specification of sold products by knowing it's serial number/service tag. As detailed as seeing someone naked inside
>the original factory configuration (original RAM, SSD, Battery size). You can compare whether the seller swapped the size.
>know niche features that rarely/never advertised by sellers like WWAN configuration: whether it's WWAN modem pre-installed, WWAN ready (no modem but comes with antenna cable & SIM tray), or WWAN not possible at all (no antenna, no SIM tray).
>detailed information on each components, invisible to outer appearance like Display (screen type, resolution, brightness, color range), original battery (even the manufacturer), WLAN card
>even lists non-purpose components (screen lid, bottom cover, main chassis, fans, SSD heat spreaders, wiring)
>Other non-physical config: Original OS, preinstalled software, warranty choices, even information like "Intel ME disabled")

As for your case, Lenovo screen is just bad, abysmal brightness. Take it for granted. Sellers will tell you whether the screen is good, and will sell it at premium price.
>>
I'm starting university so I've been thinking it's finally time to get a laptop, I know thinkpads have a good reputation for being cheap and reliable, but which one should I get? Or which ones should I avoid?

Thanks!

These threads are so dead these days. It's like the last hangers on are here, as people try and hold on the Thinkpads even though they morphed into a boring laptop that looks just like everything else these days.

I miss my thick bento box, I gladly would have taken a thicker laptop if that meant a full screen, more USB ports, a real non-checklet keyboard. I hate this race to be thin. It results in a massive palm rest and alot of wasted space under the screen, so much bezel plastic.

No idea, manual doesn't say shit.
But why would you want to use one anyway when you can just install 2nd NVME m.2

X13 only has one SSD slot

Mine has two m.2 2280 + 2242, plus removable Wi-Fi card.
>>
>>102369657
I didn't test it, but it only has 230 charge cycles and over 92% health so it's in good shape.
It should last around 5 hours of light workload with 50% screen brightness.

Finalizing my T430 setup.
I bought the B140HAN01.1 without realizing its a different connector, does anyone know what's the best solution to LVDS to EDP?
Also are the ~50$ 9 cell batteries on ebay the best option?
>>

Are they even decent
>>
>>102364627
Yeah but if you block them the laptop temperature increases so it's still bad.

I just bought my first laptop and it's a T430 with the SSD, 8GB of ram and the 900p display for about 90 bucks
Pretty excited, hopefully I won't just get a package full of rocks

AyyMD version is less common.
Not worth 3 times the price for sure, but Ryzen comes with much faster iGPU and overall more cores 6c/12t is the minimum.

DO I even need the x230 gigabit ethernet blob? Why doesn't coreboot wiki list it?

Will the ethernet work without the blob? Also if it does need it, can I just skip it anyway if I plan to just use wireless?

Sadly you are correct I can't find anyone who got 2nd NVMe working. And I don't want to remove my GPU just to test that.

Note for anyone interested in the newer ThinkPads, T480 and above.
USB ports are awful, they are looser than your mum's vagina. And since charging is done by USB-C you can expect you will need to replace the port sooner rather than later.

idk, do all of your Fn buttons work and do you have any Unknowns in Device Manager? If you have discrete graphics I'd consider loading those drivers direct from the manufacturer, but otherwise if there are no unknowns I'd leave it alone.

I use linux, yeah, but only because I am cheap and I want less bloat. Privacy is a retarded rationale; if you want privacy get off the internet.

How would you choose between these:
>Dell laptop
>Relatively price competitive
Or:
>Framework laptop
>A little more expensive initially
>But should be more upgradable and repairable in the long run (you can drop in a better CPU/motherboard for instance)
>>
>>102396424
old dell
>>
>>102396972
Well I don't really want something old because it will be slow, both of those options I mentioned are new laptops. I will be compiling stuff on this machine (not massive stuff though) so I don't want something too slow.
>>
>>102396986
yeah just get the framework and see if it lasts for you. If their batteries are interchangeable and shit, it might end up being worth it. I don't know how much they cost
>>
What's the first thing you should do when you get a new laptop? Besides thoroughly disinfecting it, of course

>>

dell every day

I don't see the upgradability to be of any importance to me
It's 2024. Hardware is barely getting any better. I use a 13 year old laptop and it works perfectly fine for what I use it for. If I bought a laptop today I would expect at least 20 years of relevance. Of course there is no way that a laptop made in the age of shittification would last that long and I guess that framework's "repairability" gimmick is here to rescue but I'd rather not lock myself into their ecosystem.

This shit's ass. Laptops suck nowadays.

>>102396424

Hi frens, I need to find the right model for my boomer brother who is extremely fixated on the laptop having to be 17 inches because he thinks that that'll make the resolution better. He doesn't have the mental capacity to understand that his current shitty win7 laptop has like sub 720p resolution and that is the reason things look shitty.
So yeah I need to buy a used Thinkpad for him and install linux but it has to be at least full hd and at least 15", preferably 16".
All other specs are irrelevant, he just needs an SSD.

The fan of my T14s G1 AMD died (machine gives a "fan error" message on startup, but I can skip it for now by pressing esc). This started after I updated the bios of the machine. Is it possible (or recommended) to downgrade the bios? Should I just get a new fan?

battery life depends on power draw, pci usb cpu screen draw the most power
you can reduce power draw by using powersave cpu governor for example
