>It means that I for one REFUSE to buy any more nVIDIA video cards untill they stop bloody cheating. You want to know the exclusive features? Here's one: They let you choose "Application Specific" as a setting, but then they completely ignore what the application tells it to do (UT2k3). Since any normal person only stares at the FPS counter on the top right while playing UT2k3 and not anything else, they "optimize" their drivers to increase framerates and while sacrificing image quality. Then again, what does the consumer know? All he did was pay 500$ for the video card. nVIDIA engineered the card, so isn't it only fair that they decide how it works?

I also ran a cpu stress test during furmark and my system didnt turn off so i dont know if its a psu issue since i assume it would have turned off.

Why am I stuttering with this PC? I get microstutters constantly in multiple different games. Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima, even Skyrim was stuttering. My temps and everything are fine, there's just seemingly random frametime spikes where I freeze for 2-4 frames. It's not enough to mess with anything but it's enough to piss me off and give me a headache. I ran unigine superposition seven times and in one of those I had two stutters but for some reason the rest were fine.

My framerate is perfectly fine by the way. And in Ghost of Tsushima I set my settings all the way to the lowest option and the resolution to 1080p and I was still getting microstutters.
>>
>>102392499
Red means death in computer or Nazis because Jews fear them. I don't blame them for being afraid.

>>102392491
Those paid shills have managed to make a company worth more than the people making your CPU. A GPU cannot operate without a CPU so stifling their growth also hurts Nvidia. Intel isn't going to catch up to TSMC anytime soon.

>>102392525
And this type of propaganda is why Nvidia is so huge. All it takes is a simple out of context no longer relevant thing to haunt them forever. It's not even the drivers it's Windows WDDM. Appreciate any comments on this build. It's been over 15 years since I built something worth more than $500. I know the RAM is overkill but it's been a dream of mine to have 64GB+ of ram since I was a teenager so this is adult me fulfilling teen me fantasty.

I'm going to run local AI models, do development and run games from the past 15 years. Hoping it's relatively future proof as it'll probably be that much time again until I buy a brand new machine again.

>>102392667
If you're doing AI, I strongly suggest getting a 4090 if you can get a cheaper CPU like the 7800x3D and a cheaper motherboard to try and get it into your budget. The 24GB of VRAM is so useful and Nvidia knows they're jewing you to get you to pay the premium.
>>
Does the motherboard really matter? What's the difference between a $400 ASUS motherboard vs a $200 one? Should I just get the cheapest WIFI motherboard?
>>
>>102392693
Thanks for the heads-up, is it a matter of the speed or do AM5 mobo's just complain at having all slots full?

>>102392717
Unfortunately 4090s around here are basically the entire budget ($3000-3500AUD) of the build.
>>
>>102392742
>is it a matter of the speed or do AM5 mobo's just complain at having all slots full?
the second one, realistically you won't be able to run more than 4800-5000 with all 4 slots populated
6400 can also be kinda hard to run so i would recommend just getting 2x32 6000C30 sticks
>>

Depending on how often you'll run local AI models, it could be cheaper to rent an A100 on vastai. It should only be around $1/hr

>>102392124
4070Super. Happy with it for $600, coming from a 1080Ti it's a pretty massive upgrade. Happy I skipped out on the previous generations but wished I could've made it to 5000 series before my 1080Ti shit the bed. IMO not really worth buying a $1000+ GPU to be able to use the new
RT features at a decent resolution without trickery. I'd rather wait till the technology matures and then buy high again. We're at a transitional point in GPU hardware and it's going to age faster than ever.
>>
>>102392788
If you're serious about AI shit, don't get a 4090. Get yourself a proper GPU. NVIDIA RTX A6000 is a good start.

>can you clarify what you mean by "your chip might need more VSOC for that RAM speed"? Do you mean increase my CPU voltage in my bios?
yes, but not the actual core voltage, there's a bunch of other voltages on AMD CPUs
they can be hard to find in the BIOS so i wouldn't recommend messing around with this until you've exhausted all other options, but if you want to give it a try this is what i would recommend
none of this is unsafe but i wouldn't go any higher on VSOC
an easier option would also be to try a lower RAM speed like 3200 and see if the stuttering goes away, if that's the case then it's definitely caused by infinity fabric instability

Also a leaf ordering a new PC and a part of me was wondering how worth it it is to simply order to a nearby US shipping site and bringing it across the border. From what I gather, you declare it and whether or not the border guard is having a nice day, he might just wave you through. Pretty crazy, because ordering to the US becomes either a colossal discount, or a minor loss depending on which event occurs and you end up paying duty

Not sure if I wanna risk my IRL luck stat. I also had a nightmare of a time at the border last time for not getting the vaxx, so I 'm probably already red flagged there.

Don't forget to account for the time and gas it takes to get to your US mailbox
I used to do what you proposed but it wasn't really worth it given the above and the risk of getting hit by the taxes anyway.
Assuming you honestly declare the value of what you're bringing in through the border, CBSA probably will force the tax on you if it's over $500
I've had luck bringing through single or two parts at a time valued at sub-$400 total but again, the time and gas factor only makes sense if you're saving multiple hundreds.

Is this the right place to ask about PC audio stuff? I don't see anything in the OP about headphones or speakers.
I've got some old Logitech system from the 2000s that I think is finally giving up the ghost. Good plug-and-play 2.1 and 5.1 systems like it seem to be on their way out, and apparently bookshelf speakers are the way to go now, but how does that all work? Everything I see says you need an amp and a DAC and a bunch of other junk to get a setup like that to work. Where should I start looking for all that? The audiophile rabbit hole is a deep one, and I don't care about listening to Steely Dan with $5000 audio snakes, I just want an idiot-proof solution that sounds decent and has proper stereo separation.

Zen5 wasn't a refresh, it really was an improvement but they're bottlenecked by IF so only productivity applications got a real uplift, gaming got a minimal uplift but the big problem with Zen5 is the price and they're basically competing with themselves.
I don't really blame Intel for only getting a 1% uplift for Raptorlake Refresh but the fact they tried to pass it off as another gen sucks, they should have just called the 14900K the 13850K but w/e.

I personally prefer separates but there's plenty of PnP 2.1 sets out there. The "good" ones are going to cost you a decent chunk but only slightly more than a similar separates system. If you don't want to go down the rabbit hole just go ahead and buy an S350DB (or variant) and call it a day.
If you would like to assemble your own system you'll need a receiver or amp, speakers, sub, and wires. An external DAC is optional but desirable if your PC audio is prone to interference (crackling). Set a budget and have a look at what you can afford. Very roughly speaking, spend about 10% on the amp and split the remainder about equally on the speakers and sub. Stick to 2.0 if your budget is under ~$500 - better to put the budget into the speakers in that range.

the case, the storage, cooling if AMD (or going with a thermalright phantom spirit instead of expensive coolers if Intel), most motherboards are overbuilt and people just buy what they like the look of and you should be buying a board with two dimm slots anyway on DDR5 unless you need 192gb for a work machine, buying an AMD GPU instead of Nvidia, buying the cheapest ram kit at a rated speed and first word timing instead of that slower corsair kit with RGB lighting for more money.

If you're desperate to make budget then cut these parts in order:
>Case
Cheap cases are shit to work in but don't make your PC faster. A bad one can make it slower though so spend at least enough to get a full mesh front panel.
>CPU cooler
If your CPU is "65W" class then the stock one will be fine until you can save up $20-30 for a tower cooler. If it's an unlocked i7 or R9 then those $35 Thermalrights should be the baseline.
>Storage
Get less capacity and add more as necessary. Probably best not to go under 1TB.
>Mobo
Examine your needs carefully and spend the time to find the cheapest board that satisfies them. You can use an add-in card later if you find you need some other feature.
>PSU
I'm going to catch flak for this but I'll say it anyway - if your rig is going to pull like 400W under full load you can get away with a B-tier model. I will say that, as with the case, the PSU can be amortized over multiple builds so don't drop it so hard that you wouldn't want to reuse it.
>Main silicon (CPU/GPU/RAM)
The last place to cut. Be frank about your actual needs - if you're not getting paid for your work then it doesn't matter if your renders take 10 seconds or 10 minutes. Gaming, likewise, is a discretionary expense. Don't go into debt for your FPS.

I’ve never gotten a top of the line cpu before, usually go for the 12700k equivalent of every generation. I might try my luck with the 285k or whatever this time…assuming it can be air cooled. If none of intels CPU’s can be air cooled I might go amd this time.

remember to preorder 5090
>>
>>102395095
This is why I'm less than inclined to wait for 5000 cards and get a 4070 Ti Super

They're just going to release an overpriced 5090 and 5080. And then reduce the price for the 5080 only due to backlash.

Rumors are already stating the 5090 to cost near $2000. And if that's true then the 5080 is going to be higher than the 4090 and that's already out of my budget.

I'm building a machine to run AI chatbots/LLM I need large amounts of Vram for that so this has to be a pretty beefy PC. Will probably still wait until January when the 50 series is announced but this is the build so far:

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/JkWrz6 (no moniter picked out yet)

Has someone got a recommendation on a PC case for this set up? It'll have 2 radiators, one from the Suprim 4090 and one from the CPU cooler, not sure what the best orientation is, looking to have a glass window at the front and side so I can see my RGB, might want to put a display figure inside too.

Also, there's no reason the Samsung drives can't be set up raid configuration, right? Just double checking that's available for M.2 slots

Budget for case: less than $400 aud / $268.20 usd
Budget for whole system: $6600 aud / 4425.30 usd
Country: Ausfag
Personal taste: I like corsair and Samsung, but, don't really care for the case to be limited to those brands

Consoles have a lifetime of anywhere 7+ years and aren’t upgradable, and to push the boundaries of graphics overtime the resources become more and more constrained with yesterdays hardware.

>on the other hand dlss and fsr show how far devs dont optimize

Correct

Devs also had the same problem with the PS3's CELL processor as they had never dealt with a multi-core processor before.

Once upon a time, dev had to resort to tricks such as culling to optimize games to run on very limiting hardware. 2024 and now devs don't even bother with this shit because the hardware is so powerful and full of gimmicks such as DLSS/FSR and RTX that gaymers don't even understand why their game runs well or runs like shit

PS5's problem is devs are trying to push for 2160p on a console that should only be aiming for 1440p

Total writes isn't technically a component of SMART so different vendors record it differently. Sometimes that makes for misreporting on drive health in 3rd party programs. I'm not sure if that shows how bad AMD's dx11 driver is, or how good their vulkan driver is, because for me on nvidia, games that have a dx11/vulkan/dx12 option universally perform much better in dx11 than the latter two.
