Will I be better off with the Ryzen 4500 or the 12100f? I am not planning on upgrading with either anytime soon and will be initially pairing it with a rx6600.
I know 4500 is supposed to be a bit weaker, but it's also six core, so I was wondering whether it would serve me better for the coming years. And trying to compare those two is pretty weird since most CPU benchmark sites have the 4500 being surprisingly ahead when it should be weaker from everything else I have seen. Only userbenchmarks has it ahead, but then again that shouldn't be surprising.

there's no need to convince yourself of anything when you can run an 8 hour memtest overnight and get some hard data
you can even do 24 hours if you're really paranoid and have the time, but the only reason you would pass 8 hours but fail 24 hours is temperature, literally the ambient temperature changing during the day

It's not about now but over time, I keep hardware for an exceedingly long time, even if not in my main PC. Still have DDR3 in my router and arcade cabinet.
No need to accelerate the ageing process with more voltage and I don't desire surprises, it's actually been eye opening working in a DC and seeing just how delicate DDR4 and DDR5 is.

Maybe it's irrational but IDC

If you are on a budget, going for AM5 now that prices for the platform are still high doesn't make much sense.
On a budget you won't need the extra initial power so your money is totally wasted, and when you inevitably upgrade years down the line when the pieces for AM5 are lower, you can use the 100+ dollars you saved in the first place by going AM4 to go with a much better am5 board that you could have gotten years prior.
And by then ddr5 prices would have also dropped. AM4 basically pays for itself if you are planning on gaming on normal 1080p 60fps. And upgradability isn't even an issue since even if you have to upgrade your mobo, it's only using the money you saved by going AM4 instead initially.
If you are building a high end system though, obviously you are going to go AM5.

My retarded experiments with swap file size and location.
But also yes, windows.
Did you know that disabling swap entirely makes certain programs go crazy with ram use?
Did you know that manually setting swap bigger than ram somehow makes certain other programs very confused about file handles, io and caching?
Did you know that windows can't properly resolve lack of either free ram or ports (that means not just network connections but also local sockets and file io) and just starts randomly killing user-interactive applications hoping to hit the culprit sooner rather than later?

Honestly pull the gun now. The major limiting factor isn't even the blackplane driver of modern panels but the languishing display standards that are choked for bandwidth.
https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/when-is-displayport-2-1-going-to-be-used-on-monitors
The RTX 5000 series when it launches next year will be the first GPUs with full DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 support despite the superset standard being finalized way back in October 2022
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
Using the full ~80 Gbps of available throughput you can scrape by with 960Hz @ 10-bit. but only with 1080p:
https://www.kramerav.com/bandwidth-calculator/

1440p@960Hz = 127 Gbps
4K@960Hz = 287 Gbps
Meanwhile HDMI 2.1 is only 48Gpbs and HDMI 2.1b only came out in 2023 with no new bandwidth version in sight.
It's going to be the 2030s I fear before we have the connection not bottlenecked enough for modern resolutions and that's assuming <4K resolutions don't appear to cannibalize the bandwidth budget on more pixels.
DSC is cope.

With OLED + BFI we might get true sub-1ms MPRT somewhere in the 600Hz range or so which is more feasible than the 1Khz required for LCDs even with Nvidia Pulsar strobing.

Whichever is cheaper at the moment when you want to pull the trigger if you have room for both. Testing the Rad Size Scaling from the same lineup of AIOs show diminishing returns with both those sizes being basically within the margin of error of each other.

AMD is FSR only, Nvidia has FSR and DLSS. You only plan to play with raster only and zero upscaling ever? What resolution? 1440p?

As I said I'm on 1080p. I just want smoother gameplay, especially for some more graphically more demanding competitive games like The Finals, and overall 60-90fps for other games 5 years down the line. I'm good CPU/RAM/SSD wise.

I wonder if raster only would get me far 5 years in the line.
My gamer instinct tells me I'm gonna get crushed using raster only before a better upgrade, unless we're talking AA games or rare cases of good optimisation.

Intel made some seriously impressive strides in a short period of time and all it did was keep their head above water because amd did the same.
The gap between the 10700k and 14900k is similar to the gap between an i7-3770k and a 10700k... in single and multi core. That's a massive jump. It just doesn't seem like it because amd has conditioned us to see massive jumps as normal.

Are there any affordable PC cases for ATX with 5 hotswap 3.5" drive bays or just an easy internal drive rack with decent cooling and good dust filtration?

I don't need a GPU or beefy CPU cooler at all
just want to set up a basic fileserver NAS without taking up too much room but want drive bays for re purposing old HDDs without them roasting at 55c or so in a case with no fan over the drive bays
>>
>>103063078
You should (not the G2 though it's way too expensive and will likely be at parity or beaten by the Thermalright Royal Preytor Ultra whenever it launches for a fraction of the cost).

For the poors (not really), get fractal node 304 or node 804. Fractal define 7 xl if you have lots and lots of disks.

I paid $340 for 10 noctua 120's. It is what it is. Just don't be poor and it's okay. Almost went for the t-30s based on reviews but I had heard they sound less pleasant and are more prone to whine. Idk. I don't have much experience with the brand but I've had noctua fans before and I know their sound profile is pleasant at least to my ears so I didn't want to take a leap of faith. Especially when the price was similar and the performance advantages were miniscule.

For modern towers (those that include USB Type C front panel connectivity) with acceptable levels of 3.5" storage capacity at sane price levels your choices are a bit limited:
Thermaltake The Tower 500, Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2 (picrel), & the Silverstone SETA D1

BX500 is qlc shit
what is your source for it not being? could have sworn it was even advertised as QLC, just like samshits QVO 870

MX500 is also slow vs its competition which is why it's regularly the lowest priced decent name brand SSD on the market
corners were cut and performance suffers
it's still okay, and has decent endurance, but isn't anywhere close to fully saturating the SATA3 interface but it exists in a product class where people don't expect that so it gets by without people whining much in reviews
it also uses a smart controller with caching so typical use cases usually have the native performance be masked and it appears fast but if you have demanding workloads it can be quite slow
sustained writes with data being modified for example do much better on 870 Evo, or, even older model Crucial SATA SSDs than the mx500

its like a benchmark hero but the benches are rigged for burst performance

>>103064272
Enthoo Pro 2 with the closed panel looks decent, I'll look into that. Seems spacious.
Aesthetically I wish it were symmetrical with the left side mirrored over onto the right but as it is I can probably live with that.

Don't need that many drive bays but I guess if I've got em I can slot in some more dated 1TB drives to be idle/slept and spun up on occasion for more backups until I find a better use for the bays so not bad to have em, today I only care for 5 bays though as my requirement. Currently only use three for my NAS but will be upgrading to 5x high capacity drives in a RAIDZ1 next year which is why I'm looking for a new case
current one is shit and drives are toasty due to no airflow (45c) idling and I know it'll be stupid hot with 5 packed in

I hope 5090 isn't $2,000 - $2,500 and if true, I hope the market doesn't accept it. Then again $1,000+ GPUs are standard now. Maybe it'll be for workstation/AI use so 5080 will be the seller but that could be $1,500 now.

Hey, /g/uys. ~8 threads ago I was asking what to replace my motherboard with since my current b450/ac burned out, and got a couple recs for ASRock, and in the end went for a B650E Taichi with a amd 6700X cpu.

I don't need a hundred ports, just a board that will stand the test of time, allow me the optionally to upgrade if desired, and look minimalistically stylish (and not cost $300+).

Thanks for these threads and the couple recs that I did get, they were significant in setting me on the right path..

You didn't fall for anything. Airflow cases are the best but the tradeoff is noise. Silent cases aren't recommended because you make a significant tradeoff in temps and ironically your PC fans will probably run much louder due to lack of airflow. If you're sensitive to sound get a Be Quiet! or Fractal Pop Silent case. I have a Torrent and I'm aware of it even at lowest speeds but the fans are so big that even maxed out it's not obnoxious, but I just use headphones and forget about it because the cooling is worth it for me.

It's the GPU coil whine and fans that annoy me and there's really not much I can do about that. I replaced all the case fans with Noctua ones, they're barely audible.

nothing I've said has been wrong
you probably haven't even put these drives through testing yourself and are relying on (((reviewers))) and old bench data
revised products often bench differently vs how they performed at their introduction and for some reason it isn't illegal to completely gut a product and make it perform totally different while keeping the same model numbers but that's just how things are
