Don't. Hanging a gpu vertically like that murders your temps because the vapor chamber won't work properly. Vertical mounting "straight" where it's still horizontal lengthwise is fine, in fact even mounting it lengthwise but the io is facing down is fine, but io facing up vertical = death.

This fatal flaw is why the tower 300/600 are unusable if you're performance minded at all. Do it only if you like the looks more than you like having 10c lower gpu temps.

I'm finally going to replace my LGA-2011 3930K, DDR3 system (keeping my 2080Ti for now)

I'm not yet sure on the motherboards though
It seems they all lack some shit and add some shit with no clear winner
Also benchmarks show at least 4% CPU performance difference between the boards which I find odd
Motherboards are hard for me to compare because of all the variables (on board x if you use slot y then slot z loses w or slot v is disabled)

So fan configuration makes way bigger difference than I thought. So pic related is a simple airflow diagram of my current rig. Note the top case fan marked in red. I previously had it as an exhaust, figuring three intakes, three exhausts would make a good balance. In the game I typically play, my CPU sat at 80c. This is within normal ranges, but after some thought, I flipped it to an intake since it was in front of the CPU cooler and I figured it would get it more cool air. Now, in the same game, 45c. Absolutely crazy difference. Just flipping one fan.

For those curious, its a rig I put together in 2020. 10700k w/ dark rock pro 4, msi 3070, Phanteks P300a case. Four years I have been starving my cpu of cool air. What a fool I am.

>>103066260
I got my wife's 6700XT off ebay in Nov 2022 for $265. Probably a miner's card, but it had only been on the market for a year so I figured the wear and tear would be minimal. It has held out fabulously. Way better than my 3070. I couldn't imagine paying $500 for such a card.

>>103065664
You guys may only care about the high-end desktop parts, but the new APU's coming out of AMD are going to revolutionize the mini, laptop and handheld market. The new ones with 16 RDNA 3.5 CUs, that operate at 35w, perform at the same level as a 7600, in an APU. Theyre nuts. When the steam deck refreshes, it will run circles around its previous model.

an adapter takes a straight 12vhpwr plug and turns it 90 degrees
the cables just goes straight to a 90 degree plug, you're not adding the resistance of another plug and socket

Buying a gaming laptop is an absolute waste of money in every way. Ass battery life, implicitly limited hardware designed for lower power, thermal throttling, somehow still sounds like a fucking harrier jet when you want to run Microsoft word. I had a Gigabyte with a 3070 and it's a total piece of shit compared to my Macbook M2 Max in every single way. 27"1440p is the perfect sweet spot. Appreciably more screen real estate than 1080p, acceptable dpi if you're not 12 inches from your screen, fairly easy to run at high refresh rates unlike 4k.

1440p is the perfect sweet spot for a 27" display. And 4k for a 32" display. My 32" display allows me to have more free real estate on my large desk in front of it and lean back in my chair, even farther away from the screen. My 27" is more appropriate for a smaller desk and/or sitting closer to it. It's also much easier to carry around. The 32" is rather immobile.

What's the absolute minimum GPU for high refresh rate gaming on a 1440p 165hz monitor and also for 4k gaming on a 4k 144hz TV (TV gaming will mainly be single player games that don't require more than 60 fps). I'm seeing ryzen 5700 and rtx 4060 prebuilts for sub £600 but I don't think a 4060 will be capable of what I want out of it. Going from 4060 to 4070 builds almost doubles the price and I'd rather spend closer to 600 than 1000.

no point unless you're planning on changing platforms, B550 is enough for AM4

>cooling
there are sweetspot coolers like the phantom spirit 120 se that cools everything under 250W pretty well and arctic liquid iii 360/420 that handles anything under 350W
>>
>>103070341
This would be DDR5 so you want 1DPC for max clocks - stick to 64/96GB. Also please bear in mind my info comes from somebody posting some benchmarks here over a year ago. In the current state of play it may be better to clockmaxx with single rank (CU)DIMMs.
>>
>>103070342
cooling will depend on the type of CPU you have purchased, for example a high end Intel CPU such as the 14900k can suck down up to 300w or more on a full load so you would ideally need to get a large aio (all in one) liquid cooler 360mm or bigger, whereas a part such as the Ryzen 7 7800x3d will not normally exceed 105w so most air coolers can handle it just fine

Higher capacity RAM DIMMs (32 A-die modules or 48GB M-die modules) are dual rank vs single rank for 16/24GB sticks, which gives you some minor improvement due to rank interleaving (but dual rank memory struggles to achieve high speeds).
Also just having more ram can improve responsiveness. Windows task manager doesn't tell you the whole truth about RAM utilization, i.e. it doesn't include the 'mapped files' where frequently used files are cached in RAM to speed up access compared to reading from disk.

Precision Boost 2 makes it so that your cooler choice is mostly a matter of noise and, at the margins, boost clock. Even if they do increase the PPT limit it's unlikely the CPU will pull more than 60W while gaming. It's obviously not a sensible play - there's much better top flow coolers out there - but it won't kill anything either.

I wa a looking at reviews and why does the average 4070 super run so much hotter and louder than the 7900gre which uses more watts?
>>
>>103070656
probably because most 4070 supers use smaller heatsinks and twin fans to help margins compared to most 7900GRES using larger heatsinks with triple fans
>>
>>103070656
Worse coolers on average. I expect many firms will have reused 4070 designs (220W) for the Super. Plus some will have reused 7900XT coolers for the GRE. Can be cheaper overall since you save on R&D.

So I currently have a Asus Rog 450-F Gaming (old one not the gen 2) with a Ryzen 3600 CPU and a 5600XT GPU. I just ordered a 5700X3D. I play in 1080P and dont plan on buying a new monitorany time soon. Should I upgrade my GPU or can the 5600XT still handle 1080P stuff?

I really wanted to play Monster Hunter Wilds, but after playing the demo on lowest settings and getting artifacted Nintendo 64 image quality at 30 FPS, I figured that I needed to consider an upgrade.

5600XT is the minimum specs for that game, you'll probably see better performance with the 5700X3D with that card but it is falling behind. the new gen of GPUs is out in January, I would see how things are with the CPU upgrade and try to hold out until then.
>>
>>103067044
If you're pleased with the performance of the 4000 series or AMD card you want, and the next generation is literally just a couple months away, wait for the new generation to release. If it causes a price drop of the card you currently want, get that card. If it doesn't cause a price drop and the new generation is prices similarly or slightly higher, get the new gen card you like. If it doesn't cause a price drop and the new gen cards are much more expensive, get the previous gen card you were already eyeing. There will always be something better "right around the corner." So just try to get what you already want that suits your needs at the best price possible. If you have to wait like 1/3 to half a year though? Just get what you want now rather than spending all that time speculating.
>>
>>103070791
If you've still got access to the demo you should bench it with RivaTuner too see what component is holding you back. With what you have currently it could genuinely be any one of those mentioned.
Ordinarily I would say to upgrade the card first, because that's the most likely bottleneck in mainstream games, but what's done is done. Bench it again with the new CPU and make a decision.
FWIW, I do /think/ you'll need a new card since the 5600XT is pretty slow by modern standards but there's no sense buying shit randomly without testing. As for RAM, DDR4 is so cheap right now that you might as well upgrade while you're at it. Should be able to do it for like $30 if you sell your old kit.

>CPU
Fine in isolation but at $500 you might as well wait for the 9800X3D.
>Cooler
Absolutely overkill. Your CPU is hard limited to 90W and will pull more like 50 in games.
I'm not a Noctua hater btw. - it will be the last one you ever need - but going with a smaller design will save you money and headache re. compatibility.
>Board
Fine. It's a bit over MSRP right now so check pricing on the Pro RS which is very similar.
>RAM
Should price-shop this. 2x16GB 6000C30 is going as low as $85 atm.
>SSD
Overkill for a gaming rig; could save $50 here with an NM790 or similar HMB drive.
>Card
You are paying rather a lot for the cooler but it's fair enough if you're willing to do that for silence.
>Case
Seems a little cheap for a $2k rig but it's got mesh so it won't be a furnace.
>PSU
A top end 750W unit should be closer to $100. At this budget I'd be aiming for ATX3.1 too.

Why is it hard to find 3TB SSDs compared to others and are very expensive?
Why is it better to go in even numbers, 1, 2, 4TB?

Use the one specified in the manual. Your pic is the old Molex standard which is unlikely to be found on a new drive. SATA power is much more likely and looks like an L shape from the front. You can use any one of the daisy-chained connectors on the cable.

Check used market for a 2nd hand GPU if you can, then I would personally recommend getting an aliexpress 5600, a cheap AM4 board & 16gb ddr4 (you'll feel the lack of 32gb most likely, but hey saving 30€ might make the difference between getting a better gpu or not). If you really want a new GPU, I think the best deal in europe is the 6800.

Aliexpress is as trustworthy as amazon third party sellers or ebay. It's just a marketplace
You'll find plenty of fake CPUs on aliexpress, but that specific listing has 10k+ sales, 1800 reviews (including people posting pics proving it's an actual 5600), 4.9 stars, the store has been around for two years, has tons of sales & is selling a bunch of other cpus in high volume that people are also happy about

Basically, if you're ever going to buy things of aliexpress, check how trustworthy the seller is & use that to determine if it's worth the risk. If it was like 5-10€ cheaper, I probably wouldn't risk the 0.1% chance you get fucked, but since it's like 40-50€ cheaper iirc it's absolutely worth it
>>103072419
it shows as 90€ for you? It shows a 72.5 shipped to france for me. Plus there's sales and shit going on so you can likely take off another like 10 bucks with coupon codes
If you need the cooler, yeah at that point it might be a better idea to just buy the 110€ one instead of 90€, but at the same time, for like an extra 10-20€ you could get the aliexpress one and an actually good cooler
