Baguette here.
I'm getting more and more tempted to do a full upgrade from my now 10 year old build that sports a 4970K and a GTX 970.
I wanna use my new build to play games at 1080p120 natively if possible, experiment with AI slop generation, and I would like it to last at least 5 years.
I've come up with this so far (by mostly following the shit in the OP template): https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/jDBzKq
Budget would be around EUR 1500-2000 max.

I've got a few questions about this build:
- I intend to reuse my old PSU, which is an EVGA SuperNova 750W G2, as well as my old case (Phanteks Enthoo Pro, which is full size). I assume the case will be fine, but what about the PSU?
- Are the specs or any of the components overkill or overpriced for the use cases mentioned above?
- Should I wait for Nvidia to announce the 50xx series GPUs, since specs/prices seem to have begun leaking?

copypaste of my post from prev bread: Pic rel is my current desktop(first ever build from nov '21)
I've been itching to consoom for it by either throwing a 4070(ti?) super in it and possibly changing to a 5800x3d if needed.
Are my current components still decent by todays standards that a new GPU and possibly CPU will keep it relevant for the next 3+ years? or should i just bite the bullet and start a whole new build entirely?
Also, i'll need to get a1440p monitor since i've been using a 1080p
>>
>>103087069
Looks decent.

>I assume the case will be fine, but what about the PSU?
Case yes but I wouldn't reuse a 10-year-old PSU. That's about the age where god ones start dying from wear. Course there's always a chance it'll outlive you - I have an XFX unit from 2011 that still mostly runs - but it's a big risk for the sake of €100.

>Are the specs or any of the components overkill or overpriced for the use cases mentioned above?
The mobo and SSD are overkill but workable.
Also obviously try not to spend €500 on a 7800X3D. If you are prepared to pay that then wait for the 9800X3D in like 3 days.

>Should I wait for Nvidia to announce the 50xx series GPUs, since specs/prices seem to have begun leaking?
Up to you. I'd expect February 2025, at the earliest, for the 5070Ti class to launch so you'll be waiting a while.

the 5900x is technically better than the 5800x3d, since it has more threads, but like maybe 2 games might benefit from the 3d cache.
1080p and 1440p is basically the same resolution when you enable upscaling (if you are not using performance upscaling, it's more like in-between 1080p and 1440p).
I would only consider a new monitor to be a valuable upgrade if you have a 60fps 1080p monitor, or it just has really bad response time, or you really want a dual monitor setup. Otherwise the monitor is probably going to be pretty much the same, IPS / TN technology has not really increased much (unless you go with mini-led but it's more for gaming / movie people who really care about inky blacks in super dark scenes, you might find yourself disabling local dimming while not gaming due to the halo effect being annoying).
You should only buy a new GPU if you are willing to spend $600 to get around 2x the fps you currently get.
That's not bad (you get what you pay for), but you should ask yourself what type of games you currently cannot play at an acceptable FPS since the 6600 XT should be able to hit pretty much all AAA games at around 100fps at 1080p low settings, and non AAA games at 200+fps.

5700x3d+4070tisuper should keep you very comfortable for 3+ years.
5900x + 4070tisuper will likely be fine

don't bother with a 5800x3d because they're basically unobtanium at this point & only marginally better than 5700x3d

>>103087069
Since you are gaming on 1080p and you want it to last 5 years, you don't need €1500 to do that, let alone €2000.
https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/2XwD4p

The 7800X3D stock is being squeezed so it is massively overpriced right now. It was like €325 in the summer. I would not buy it.

If you want the system you selected you can last to 10 years but, get a cheaper motherboard, and get the 4080 Super instead.

Let me know if you still have any questions.

aside from it being mini itx and having a 6600xt, I'd personally say it's fine. who cares if the r9 5900x isn't specifically for gaming, most anon is going to use his pc for is 1440p if he gets a new monitor. side note not sure why it says it's only 3.7Ghz, can easily get to 4.2 without overclocking

>of which one 5900x wins and one 5700x wins

The load is going to change over the years as it always has, 5 years from now 5900x is gonna have better lows, in 2-3 years, who knows.

5700x3d is a great budget gaming CPU. Yes on average, now, it will outperform a /g/ CPU like 5900x, although your picture doesnt show it. And gaymen isn't important, performance is. Later when you upgrade 5900x will make a good server for many years to come.

>>
>>103087519
>5900x is not a gaming cpu
it seems pretty meh, just like all cpu's above $200, it's crazy you can even compare the CPU to a 12400f or 3600x, but the big difference between the 5900x and 5800x3d is the core count which matter if you were doing non gaming stuff like building code or CPU codecs / etc, so I find it pretty sad to think you would waste $300 on a CPU that is slower.

Good, it's insane to change from a 5900x to a 5800x3d (or worse), at best it's a sidegrade and if you're a /g/ user it's a downgrade.

>>103087704
>upgrade to 1440p is worth it
Certainly worth it, the biggest advantage is you can then go up to 27" size and fit 50% more stuff on your screen, for games you can see a lot more detail as well. No point in upgrading your GPU if you're gonna stay at 1080p. Although I suggest making the jump to 4k, you will never go back.

>>103087069
>>103087795
7800x3d is ok but ONLY if you really want max FPS and lower settings (like 200+fps) and have a screen to display that.

SSD is overpriced, get a cheap NVME one (should be less than €80). The speed doesn't affect you at all. So samsung SSDs are not durable or reliable. Or get a 2TB one.

GPU is fine, prices are high in EU.
>>
>>103087707
>https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d/16.html
oh no my cpu isn't getting me 300fps it's only 250fps. in some games anyway. others on here are pretty damn close, when they show the 5900x and not the 5800x.
personally, the 5900x is just fine for me as I'm not solely playing games on it (def not just new games, as shown in that link the 5900x had better performance than the x3d in cs:go so other source games likely have similar performance).
anyway, unless you care greatly about getting 50+ more fps in games that you're already getting over 100fps in(on 1080p at least, on 1440p and 4k the differences in fps were pretty minimal at best according to that same review and testing) there's not going to be a big reason to get the 5800x3d if you already have a 5900x like >>103087149 does

The controllers often fail suddenly, and their "lifetime warranty" is a complete false advertisement depending on where you live.
I have intel, crucial and samsung SSDs and the newest one was samsung and it failed, and warranty is hell. Searching around, tons of other people with the same experience.
Their high end SSDs sure have good performance but that's not something that matters for gaming and 99% of desktop use, and they're better used in a datacenter where someone else is responsible for replacements when they fail.

>wonderful deals for 7900XT
where?
everywhere I look they just give the same price of a 4070 which is around 10% slower than the 7900 XT (the super variant almost matches it).
give me a real 30% discount in terms of cost per frame over nvidia and then maybe I will consider AMD.
I have seen 20% difference in cost per dollar from AMD, but that isn't enough for me to care, but it seems for the 7900 XT is worse than that (maybe for certain countries it might?).
>>
If your target is 1440p, why not spend the extra $200 for a 4080 Super over the 4070 Ti Super? I know this cope can be said about any hardware but an up to 20% performance uplift and better 1% lows make it worth it. No?
>>
>>103088724
20% is being very generous, it's more like 10-15% for an extra $200, it doesn't make much sense to me

They are built on the same die and you are essentially getting a 10-15% faster gpu for an extra $200. If thats worth it to you then go for it. But at that cost point per performance the 4070 ti super is an easy win.
>>
>>103088724

if you want us to tell you if a GPU is worth buying, just tell us the GPU you currently have and the game(s) that is forcing you to buy a new GPU.

no you don't. dlss does fine at giving you 1080p speeds on 1440p (you could also resize your monitor to 720p, 1440p is 720p*2).

But now that it's all software-based, and decent sound is considered a feature now, there's no point beyond having additional outputs It's better to just get an external dac than to take up pcie lanes...

how important is vram for creativr multimedia stuff (blender, ps, video editing, music production etc.)?
unsure whether to get the gtx 3070 8gb or rx 6800 16gb
I'm aware that nvidias are more optimized for these things but I'm wondering if the double amount of vram gives amd the better edge here
>>
>>103088197
theres so many budget external dacs, theres no reason to use a soundcard which has its own drivers that you have to install (practically impossible to acquire on linux), just get the apple usb c to 3.5mm dongle if youre in NA, or the meizu hifi pro if youre anywhere else
aside from that if you want to move up to big boy territory and you have headphones that arent easy to run you can get the topping dx3 pro+
>>
>>103089355
only get as much vram as you need for your workload, cuda isnt about how much faster in rendering it is compared to opencl, but rather the vast cuda library that you get access to
anyway for vram just find out how much vram you need for what youre about to do. nowadays even 3090's are cheap on the used market, once in a while you'll find one for dirt cheap, just make sure you replace the thermal paste (honeywell ptm7950 is pretty great for repasting, put it on the gpu die and as for the vram you can keep the thermal pads or you can use some upsiren ux pro thermal putty which should be way cooler, you can use that stuff on your vrm's also)
>>
>>103088724
The only reason to get a 4070ti super is if none of the current 4080's will fit your case(doubt)
>>
>>103089363
Why? you can get the same apple DAC in Europe
>>
>>103089416
the apple dac in europe unfortunately doesnt have the same specs, its because of EU law limiting the voltage output on the dongle, its theoretically the same dac chip (as far as i know) but a way worse amplifier thus your headphones will be much more quiet
>>
>>103089436
it's not even a EU law, it's some overly cautious interpretation of some french law, there's nothing stopping other brands from selling more powerful dongles

the 7900 XTX is the highest teir, and in that situation if you found it for $700 I would consider it a good deal.

Men cannot be made into angels. The core problem is that the financial incentives promote slop. I really do wish every game was made by Chris Sawyer but I have to contend with the fact that he has been basically unemployed for 20 years.

If you're building fresh just choose a case with more bays. You may need to buy mounts separately but it'd be better than trying to run RAID over USB. Actually I have old PC, I intended to give it to my mother but as replacement for her already existing PC, which could be repurposed as well. But I never made server before so I'm totally green.

It's not for fresh build but existing one. My case have only small, tight space for HDDs and I need disk space for storage. Recently had to replace one 3TB drive after it showed some reallocated sectors (so I assumed it would fail soon) and I wondered if having my storage outside of case wouldn't be better idea. Right now have 3 (twin of said replaced old one, this one appears healthy) and 4 TB (fresh one) HDDs, close to each other and one have to be mounted upside down or I wouldn't be able to even plug in otherwise. Having separate case with 4 HDDs in two raid configurations would be much safer option. Sure, my mobo have total 5 sockets for m.2 drives (with 2 in use) but I don't think that nvme SSDs are good storage options at 2-4TB range. I was told that worn out SSD can hold data only for 3 months without power and modern ones are almost impossible to recover lost data from.

one of the fans on my gpu scrapes on its own heatsink (as far as I can tell) when it runs at low speed. irritates the hell out of me. I did RMA it but they couldn't recreate it. i couldnt ever for a week when i got it back, but it started again
any tips on fixing it? never opened up a gpu before

Get an IPS 34" or 38" Ultrawide eg Dell AW3420DW, Acer X34 or X38, AW3821DW or LG 35GP950G-B or 34gn850-b.
At 1440p a 4080 or 4070 TI Super is more than good enough (especially when you tweak the settings to get better frames).
You don't need to go over the top with CPU, an Intel 12700k will do just fine, get an MSI Z790 Carbon (whatever is cheapest, they're all pretty much identical, though WIFI version if you're going to use WIFI).
Ram you can pick up some sub 10ns 2x32gb ram that's around 5600 C28, eg G Skill F5-5600J2834F32GX2-RS5K or F5-6000J3040G32GX2-RS5K, Corsair CMK64GX5M2B6400C32
Hynix Platinum P41 for your OS drive, other drives that will do a job are the SN 850X or Seagate Firecuda 530.
Case, Fractal North XL, Meshify 2 XL or Meshify 2. AIO get the Arctic Liquid Freezer Three 360mm.
PSU, be quiet dark power 13 1000w titanium with a native 12vhpwr connector and a big warranty.

How does this look? I'm finally upgrading after a decade with a 970/4960k, will mainly be used for gaming/VR. , at 1440p/60 or higher hz/lower res for multiplayer.

Unfortunately the prices here are kind of shit, but I can get a few of these for slightly cheaper on amazon bringing the total closer to ~1580.

I'd be willing to stretch to 1700 if there's a huge improvement, but if this is good enough for half a decade or more then I'll be happy

Pretty happy with my latest build. Was going to build a basic Unraid NAS with a newer gen i5. Things got out of hand, I ended up returning the i5 and several other things, built a 12900k system. Ended up putting my old i9 9900k board into a Fractal R5 for the NAS and building this instead.

Maybe would have gone with AMD if I didn't basically impulse buy all of this in a fever dream, but I'm really happy with how it's running. Will probably buy a 14900k on clearance at some point and keep the 12900k around just in case that melts down. Running Proxmox, passing the 4090 through to a Win 11 VM.

These guides are typically geared for getting the most out of your money at different price points vs an expensive vanity build. You can definitely get nicer cases and it's mostly a preference thing, but like anon said, noise is an important factor. Cable routing and other stuff is a factor as well. So basically find something you like the look of and watch some videos on it to see if it's worth the extra price or not. I really love my Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X which is a little more expensive of a case. Had it for a few years now and I'll still stare at it and appreciate how cool it looks.

my personal reason for not buying a GPU for AI (LLM's) is because I use google colab which provides a 15gb gpu, but it's super autistic to get working (Use sillytarvern on your PC and then connect it to colab with koboldcpp or oogabooga, if you have a nvidia GPU with 6gb of vram, you can also use sillytavern with your GPU, I use lm studio locally because it tells you the vram usage)
buying a GPU for AI is more convenient, especially if you have a 6-8gb card (and the PSU and case) to do a dual GPU setup.
The problem with the 4060 TI 16gb is that LLM's are bottlenecked by bandwidth, and the 4060 TI 16gb doubles up the chips to reach 16gb instead of using a bigger bus, which means a 4060 will have a lower token per second speed than a 4070 (but 12gb is not much, but you might be able to reach 16gb models offloading to ram without being slower than a 4060 TI 16gb).
Note the image shows the 2080 TI being as slow as the 4060 TI, but the main reason for the slowness is due to the lack of compute on the 2080 TI since this is a Q4 model, which uses like 5gb of vram (96 tokens per second is pretty fast). The 2080 TI should be 2x the speed of the 4060 TI when you use a larger model.
So if you scale up the vram, the token speed will linearly slow down, So if you had a 16gb model, it should be 3x slower, so it will be 30tk/s. That sounds great! but that's about the same speed I get from colab.
Frankenstein 22gb 2080 TI's exist, but they lack FlashAttention 2.0 because old.
I think a 5070 should be a good AI gpu if it's the same price of a 4070 super.

My bluetooth and wifi drivers don't work. I have an MSI B550M VDH-Pro Wifi mobo. I flashed it to the most recent version because it would otherwise be incompatible with my 5700x3d. Problem is that neither bluetooth nor wifi works. I'm on Windows 10 and, while the drivers are technically installed, I can't use them, which leads me to believe it's not a windows problem but a mobo problem. I also tried to update windows and the drivers, but that didn't work since everything was already up to date.

Do I need to install specific drivers to get them to work? And, if so, where can I get them? I tried searching for them on MSI's website, but to no avail.

personally I only use LLM's for fapping, so even though using a cloud GPU from vast.ai for $2 for an hour for a 96gb / 144gb GPU is very expensive, I genuinely think it would save more more money than buying hardware because I just don't fap that much with LLMs, I just wait for something new and I doubt anyone is training a 70b Q8 or 500b q2 model for erp, because most people have 2x 3090's at best, so why train a 96gb model?

I think AMD is probably the best competitor to nvidia, but none of the AI people actually care about AMD. So all the newest tools and things for AI are going to be nvidia first AMD second.
And I think AMD even though the spec sheet on the AMD cards and certain benchmarks blow Nvidia away.
And AI right now is a huge mess of incompatibilities and build errors, you need to be a turbo autist tinkerer to just get AMD working.
https://github.com/mlc-ai/llm-perf-bench
>I only want 1 gpu
No, the 3090 / 7900 XTX is too fast. you need a dual GPU setup for a balanced LLM experience. It's fine if you buy the GPU now, then buy the 2nd gpu in the future, but remember that mixing different GPU's might not even be compatible in certain runtimes.
Yep, the 7900 XTX is pretty close to a 4090, but you also need to remember that a 4090 is pretty close to a 3090.
>But I don't want to buy used
The 4070 TI super is decent, the problem is that it's too fast just like the 3090 or 7900 XTX.
Same could be said about the 5070 or 5080, but they are all good GPU's to buy if you plan on getting another GPU in the future (as long as you have the case / PSU to fit, you could technically go ghetto and put your GPU outside the case using an pcie extender that can be hot glued onto something).
Arguably the 4060 TI 16gb works well with dual GPU if you don't mind 10tk/s (I prefer 20tk/s), and it's much better than using ram if you buy a 48gb 5090 TI in the future and feel like 16gb extra helps.
I admit I don't know all the variables, there aren't enough benchmarks, I don't know exactly how dual GPU setups or bus size affect performance (I assume PCIE doesn't matter for inference as long as you have 2-4 lanes of pcie 4 which could come from m.2 slots).
