Lower your cost of living and increase your revenue streams while getting investments with the money you're saving. For me that looks like owning a rental property that I only break even on but that's a long play. I've got my stock portfolio with more aggressive ETFs. And then I'm married so living expenses are shared with the wife.
>>
>>103112915
>>103112765
Rental properties are only a good idea if you're already very good at DIY home repair/improvement stuff. If you're not stay far away because you'll probably lose money.
>>
>>103112932
I'm renting out a condo which is basically zero maintenance. But yes that's a big consideration. Either a place that doesn't need maintenance because it's new or managed. Or that the cost is low enough that you can make profit even while hiring a contractor now and then.
>>
>>103112765
No, real estate is a boomer meme. stick with stocks and bonds.
>>
>>103112906
Are you stupid? Trump is planning to enact tariffs on China and European foreign investment. This will cause a massive slowdown in Tech as companies are no longer willing to invest in US economy. There will be more layoffs, as companies continue to increase the use of AI in their processes. 50% of Googles software is written by AI.
>>
>>103112974
Boomers are some of the richest people around and the population is outpacing new homes every year. Don't necessarily look at rental properties but at the very least buy an affordable home that you plan to live in long term with the end goal being that you don't pay for housing anymore.
>>

Based and self-destruct pilled.
>>
>>103112992
Written by AI and reviewed by humans after asking the AI to write the same thing 4 times. We just switched from copying from stack overflow into copying from gpt. Tech jobs are going to grow in the next year but you'll stay unemployed. Funny that.

Asking again:

Say I have 5 tasks to do on the sprint (a week). I have 2 meetings a week on monday and thursday. Is it a good idea to finish and hand everything in before the thursday meeting or better to wait and push something on a friday?

On the one hand I would be seen as a fast guy if I hand in everything but probably they would give me more work?

I don't know. Anyone experienced here can chip in?
>>
>>103113013
I can't tell if it's better or worse than 50% being written by Indians.
>>
>>103113035
Hand everything in early and wait until scrum to start on the next thing.
>>
>>103113035
Finish at whatever pace you're able and then slowly submit for review as the week goes on. Depending on the size of your team you might end up with extra work if you work too quickly. But also just be sure to block out your calendar for "foundational time".

Work itself in the modern sense is The Satan. It drains your soul rapidly regardless of what field you're working in, medicine, law, engineering, trades, whatever.

You're forced to participate in a game that you never signed up for. Instead of having festivals with people you love in your community and relaxing, you're forced to "commute" to an "office" and complete "tickets"

Worst of all, there is nearly zero correlation between merit and your salary potential, so you're not even really in control of your own career/earning potential, which automatically means that you should be doing the absolute bare minimum to not get fired and not exert even one joule more.

My advice to you is to start your own business or do some sort of passive income grift. Drop-shipping, a fake OnlyFans with AI generated content, whatever you can muster the will to do.

People who create "jobs" are demons. Don't let NEET faggots ITT tell you otherwise. Some people are prisoners of their own mind and actually get hard at the idea of being taken advantage of, and using their short time on this Earth to make some hook-nose shareholder another million.

t. 11 yoe being an engineer at a variety of levels (junior, mid, senior, now staff) working at both product development companies and research labs. they're all equally horrible, not because of any given trait of the job, but because being alive in anno domini 2024 necessitates "work"

i also did blue collar tradie shit as a teen under my dad for money, just as horrific, but at least you get to be outside and talk to normal human beings instead of autistic bug people

Since switching from IT to Dev Manager, I’ve realized the insane amount of bureaucratic processes we have to follow (this is just related to dev performance, I have hundreds of other processes I have to follow daily).

- Monthly self-eval: Devs must submit a detailed monthly self-evaluation
- Manager evaluation: Dev’s manager evaluates them monthly too.
- Weekly team evaluation: Dev's direct manager evaluates the "team" as a single unit every week.
- Quarterly upper management review: The direct manager’s manager steps in every quarter to assess the team as well.
- Each dev's “buddy” (more senior dev they're partnered with) performs a monthly evaluation of their performance too
- TL assesses sprint quality after each sprint.
- TL's manager reviews sprint quality too (non-technical manager)

Now, management expects me to sift through all this data weekly toghether with Jira to identify any "underperformers". They don’t see the redundancy—they just want more.
When I pointed out that the sheer volume of surveys and performance checks is beyond redundant, my manager brushed it off, accusing me of trying to "work less."
In his eyes, productivity means creating more processes. Only colleagues who add extra layers of bureaucracy get rewarded, never those who streamline.
Am I being a baby?
Feeling disillusioned... Is this really what management is supposed to be?
Because if so, I’m tempted to just go wild creating even more pointless processes—like they seem to want—and drown everyone in surveys and meaningless reports.

That's insane. Top companies do performance reviews like once or twice a year. The signal to noise ratio on weekly or even monthly reviews must be really bad. Your company's management sounds terrible. Don't give in, try to find a better job.

NTA but it's fallen out of fashion in general. It shouldn't be a whole section but can be a cute way to take up whitespace if you need to.

Yours isnt an "objective" as such but it's still too long and mostly just says what the rest of your resume will. it should be no longer than one line, and should be treated as a preamble more than a summary.

Also
>2nding bullet points
>"pouch sortation" might be real but sounds incredibly dumb and lame, fluff that shit up
>remove references, that's also dated and it goes without saying that you should have some (and employers don't check or ask for them as often as they used to)

"So what should a real interview consist of? Let me offer a humble proposal: don’t interview anyone who hasn’t accomplished anything. Ever. Certificates and degrees are not accomplishments; I mean real-world projects with real-world users. There is no excuse for software developers who don’t have a site, app, or service they can point to and say, “I did this, all by myself!” in a world where Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services have free service tiers, and it costs all of $25 to register as an Android developer and publish an app on the Android Market."

Since it’s so oversaturated, cold applications all go straight to the trash. There’s no time for hiring managers to interview everyone or even look at the resumes, they’re busy doing their actual jobs. Recruiters are the ones sifting through all the shit to find people worth taking the time to interview.

I want to propose this to my boss, but my boss is an immigrant woman.
How do I bring this up without revealing my power levels? Maybe I should focus on economics? I don't even want compensation, or a budget. I'm gonna ask our VM admin to spin up a Ubuntu VM for me. I'm just and misogynist so I'll do it for free.

>repeating Advanced Data Structures and Algorithms for the third time
Have you tried understanding data structures and algorithms?
>>
>>103120869
Kinda sorta. My professor’s lectures do little more than make me feel frustrated for not being able to follow him, and when I try to study the notes at home I become overwhelmed by the information. I don’t ever feel like I’m learning anything or making any progress when I try to study this shit. It just feels like I’m aimlessly reading extremely tedious shit for no reason.

I’ve heard others say that’s “normal”, which makes even less sense. I mean, I definitely get the impression that *most* of my classmates have no idea what’s going on, and in our class of like 26, usually ~10 of them never show up.
>>
>>103120933
If you're overwhelmed with information then it's because you don't understand what you're hearing.
Take it a chunk at a time, learn basics before advanced concepts, learn vocabulary, learn why not just what, etc.
>>
>>103120835
>so depressed that even adderall doesn’t help anymore
Stimulants make stuff like this harder not easier. You need sleep, exercise, and a small amount of good food. Not drugs.
Then you need to just sit down and try implementing the algorithms over and over again. Failing to do it will give you a good intuition for what's going on.

I think a lot of you guys don't know or have forgotten that other fields have had bubbles just like CS has. The difference with software engineering/programming is that you can kind of just take your bowl and leave, you don't *need* anyone else to make money it just makes it a lot easier.

Law is a much more competitive industry. My brother who is way more focused and hard working than I am is a lawyer and I watch him really struggle and grind. Meanwhile I barely show up and make more. I've even been fired and it took me a pretty short amount of time to get a new job.

Things are absolutely worse than they have been but if you don't hate CS/programming it's still a good carrier.

Different rules work for different kinds of people. If you push the same rules on everyone a lot of things just become completely unavailable to them. Resume tweaking is also mostly just a way to pretend you have some control over the process

Hey, man. I'm sorry things are rough for your right now. Your immediate problems are difficult, and I know how you feel because I've been there. I almost failed a couple classes as a sophomore because I was overencumbered by college, my part time jobs, and interview prep. It's a lot.

But you can do it. Find what's blocking you from making progress in your class, for example. Is it distraction? Remove it or spend several hours every day at a library with nothing but your books until you figure your shit out for the current workload. Is it general lack of energy? Get more sleep or consider talking to a doctor about it because it might be something that you can be treated for like depression. DS&A is tough, but the fact that you've had to repeat it a few times tells me something is off. Just find out what that is, address it, and then keep moving forward. You'll do fine :)

it's over isn't it? i absolutely can't stand these people. lying and cheating is literally in their dna. i've had so many bad experiences with these fucks in canada backstabbing and creating so much chaos in their orbit that no single amount of money is worth working with them.

is it coming out of your pocket or company funds?

if it's your pocket then pizza would be corny and maybe even disruptive since that's a lot of food to put out and be sitting around all day, your workplace might not appreciate that. and if it's a surprise, people might have already packed lunches or just not want pizza that day.

I would get a big back of those Lindt orbs. i've never heard of anyone allergic to chocolate and you can leave the container out so people can check allergy info. they're individually wrapped so even if they aren't in a chocolate mood, they can pocket a few and have them later. a tin of Quality Street usually goes over well too, for the same reasons

but the gold standard in canada is to bring in a big case of Tim's -- one of those coffee tankards and a few crates of timbits. because it's commercial goyslop it has never touched real food so most people won't have an allergy to it and people on diets or whatever can have ONE timbit and not feel bad. i think the only thing it hits is celiac disease since it's still wheat flour cake doughnuts. it also doesn't "compete" with whatever food options are already present and is something you can snack on before/after lunch.

if I had 50 bucks to spend on one day of office treats, I'd go with
>big tank of good/iconic coffee
>doughnut holes for some
>filled chocolates for others

>>103124408
honestly the only reason I don't move back is because I already have work here and an in to get more when I want it. when I retire I'm 100% moving back to Montreal

speaking of, if you move to Montreal, you don't have to know french... but it's also jeet central because of that. walk down the street and it's all fuckin' jeets. but still, the culture is at least slightly less tolerant of jeetery and most of them are there to go to Concordia and then flee to the US

it was a joke but really, in Quebec most of the DEI shit going on is more focused on black people. Historically, blacks have just been around longer and there are not that many naturalized citizen jeets who aren't high caste property owners living off rental scams.

And because the tax breaks you get for being a homegrown industry don't pay you out as well if you have any foreign personnel or investment, H1B style scamming is more rare. Quebec gives out TONS of money for Quebec companies to stay Quebecois, and incentivizes non-qc companies to establish satellites there and hire locally. That's why about 10 years back so many media companies suddenly established new offices there, they get huge tax breaks and outright bribes to build a building there through SNC Lavalin and then staff it exclusively with people named Jean-Something

It depends what's meant by "serious algorithms"
FAGMAN-style leetcode interviews don't like to ask you to code something that requires much prior knowledge, you don't ever asked about anything deeper than the little baby graph algorithms. There is stuff in Cormen that's way deeper than any leetcode interview
What you do get asked are boatloads of 1D array questions that a monkey could solve in O(n^2) but require some cheesy ad-hoc asspull to get sub-quadratic complexity

I'm honestly in the same boat as >>103113085. Graduated this spring. I have projects. I have an internship. I'm good at talking to people and generally interview well, but I rarely get interviews. I don't really want to post my resume here, but I have had several technical and non-technical people review it and tell me it looks good. I have applied to around 150 jobs at this point and heard almost nothing back. "Networking" is probably the key here, but I don't see many opportunities to do that at my level.

This is not a vent post. I'm earnestly asking for advice here. Also, the fundamental problem with /utwg/ is that it's a bunch of unemployed people asking other unemployed people for advice, so I hope someone here with experience is willing to give their 2 cents.

The fact that women do not have the level of second-order thinking that you ascribe to them, that if other women can be automated away, so could they since they are a woman too, is an important factor to keep in mind!

perish

there are no jobs. over half of postings are "ghost listings" and of those they demand the best of the best only for their bullshit AD janitor jobs. Even when they relax those requirements, they usually have bizarre other ones instead. For example, last time I interviewed at an MSP, they told me basically that I interviewed very well, my experience was appropriate, and I'd likely have been hired quickly if only I had a CDL. A fucking CDL. To work at an MSP doing remote support. I guess they really meant it when they said "remote", or maybe HR karens and IT team leads are just fucking insane and have no idea what they want or need.
>>
>>103124712
You can nab full remote at a lower tier company, it won’t pay as good as FAGMAN but you’ll be in Asia with a white collar salary. The envy of all expats.

In the US, anything government-affiliated usually requires US citizenship so you won't get fresh off the boat Indians. Stuff like defense contractors or actual government agencies (NSA, FBI, EPA, etc.). Maybe that's true for the Canadian equivalents?

Dunno about the rest of Canada but I could understand being homesick for Alberta. I've visited Calgary a couple times now and it's pretty great.

>Maybe that's true for the Canadian equivalents?
It is, there are government jobs that only hire citizens for security reasons, the only issue is that Canadian defense spending is something like 1% of US defense spending. There are just not even a fraction as many of those kinds of jobs here

akshually DND recently dropped the requirements to join the military to just having a long term visa, basically. you only have to be a "permanent resident" and not an actual citizen.

we don't have as many intel/paramilitary agencies as the US either -- in general, the agencies' charters are pretty broad but also incredibly restrictive and hostile to starting new agencies or allowing overlap. For example, in the US you have the FBI, DHS, ATF, etc., then every state has its own police, and then there's eight gorillion specialized agencies like the National Zoological Park Police. Here in canada, all that shit is the purview of the RCMP who has its own sub-departments/taskforces and only two or three provinces have a provincial police agency, and only two of them are older than a decade. You have five or arguably six or more military branches that all act mostly autonomously and all have land/air/sea assets of their own, we have three and the army has to call the navy just to drive larger boats around inland.

About the only time they line up is the US has the CIA/NSA dichotomy, we have CSIS/CSEC who have similar division of labor/responsibilities.

at defense contractor agencies, they're jeeted up as a matter of course for all business under crapitalism. canadian homegrown "defense contractor" companies like CAE or Ultra or whatever tend to be very white but more because they're 99% retired CF technicians who joined in the 80s, moved to public service, then to private contracting, and are now doing the legendary Quintuple Dip. And if you're not in that old boys club, they are happy to tell you fuck off, they're full.

banff is pretty nice for the nature and I like calgary, but alberta is pretty much fucked economically long-term I think. they should be doing what texas does and pivot to tech/green energy but the oiltards in that province want to triple down on a resource that could unironically end up being like coal 10-15 years from now and turn alberta into a rust belt state.
>>
>>103125278
it's already happening. a lot of the oil left to exploit is in tar sands and shit where it's too expensive to extract to be worth it, or in places requiring lots of fracking which pisses everybody off already. alberta is gonna be a poorfag province soon and not even have any social safety nets in place since the province is perpetually out of money due to not imposing taxes and oil companies slowly pulling out due to extraction costs rising and populations being less tolerant of their ever more exotic (and destructive) practices

okay so how can I explain the past 4 months in a job interview?
I graduated in the summer but I've been thinking about my life choices, and learning about software development adjacent stuff.
if I have tasks to do assigned to me I'll just do them and I love learning in general but whenever I've free time I have an existential crisis.
for context I've held student jobs consistently for a very long time and I excel in them but I've no idea how to apply my current knowledge in a professional environment.
please reply sirs

Just say "yes boss!" And make a nice html page with random colorful data.
Each new parameter will take you "time" but in reality you just add a new random generated line to your html.
Also, remove all usefulness to the metrics. Add random everywhere.
Find ways to misunderstood what they ask you to shay as much as possible their fucked up inhuman system.

The hospital I’m working at right now suffers from that level of BEYOND INSANE micromanagement that you’re describing. I got in trouble a couple of weeks ago for pressing the “cancel” button too many times on the machine for dispensing medications. When my boss called me into her office to discuss how I could improve this, I was literally too bewildered to understand what the fuck she was even asking lmao.

Anon, is some dickhead statistician working at “corporate” running spreadsheets on how many times people select the fucking CANCEL option on a med machine. I have racked my brain for like a week trying to understand what possible fucking use they could have for monitoring this, and really the only sane thing I could conclude is that they’re not doing it because it’s useful or important— they’re just doing it because they *can*.

I fucking hate inept bureaucrats so much that it makes me want to puke. Don’t be one of them, anon. Use that brain of yours to find a way to improve things. Don’t contribute to the further disillusionment of rational order that we face every day.
>>
>>103130610
>Anon, is
Meant to say “THERE is”
>>
>>103130610
Uh this is tech workers general anon, not nursing general. But since you asked, it's because most nurses are drug addicts and can't be trusted with unrestricted access to medication.
>>
>>103130772
>unrestricted
I’m not a nurse, I’m this anon >>103120835. Every single transaction that is made on those machines is recorded and can be pulled up very easily. Only a genuine retard would think they can steal narcotics out of one without getting caught within a week or less.

The way nurses ACTUALLY do it is that they document that they gave a medication to their patient (i.e. morphine), then skip the step where they have to physically hand the med to the patient and just pocket it themselves. We have had nurses stupid enough to think they could just take the med out of the machine, though, so I can’t blame an idiot like you for believing that monitoring the number of times the cancel button is being pressed AT ALL is actually helping to solve the national opioid crisis.
