doesn't mean anything since the advertised number comes from the display at max hz plus max overdrive settings and might look like shit because the panels can't keep up and actually go that fast without overshoot and shit

Is it ok to leave thermal paste in the empty resistor area of the am5 cpu? It already is running, I don't know if I should take it apart and clean it out. The response time number on the box is effectively useless, excluding OLED. Actual response times of LCD panels will reach double-digit ms depending on the content and refresh rate, or they'll be fast but have overshoot which is just as bad.

Upgrading from a 2700X to a 5700X3D, but I remember having a lot of trouble with memory compatibility when I first built this system, had to return like 3 kits. I'm not sure if the motherboard or CPU were the picky one, so will the new chip just werk? I'm currently using basic bitch Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200CL16. Also would it work to add another identical 2x8GB kit or is getting 4 sticks to work a gamble?

Not really. The problem is only a few motherboards actually do error correction and, by and large, they're not cheap. The L1Techs forum has info on which boards work with it if you're curious. Alternatively, buy an old Xeon/TR/Epyc for guaranteed support.

Yes. Same as an air cooler. Though obviously when the pump dies you can't just replace it like a fan. Expect about 5 years from it.

>Can i squeeze a little more performance out of the build for slightly cheaper?
Hard to say because you're locked in to Microcenter pricing. Which, to be fair, is usually excellent so it won't be far off.
>>

Is it worth going for 2x32GB kits right now or are memory prices too overpriced and I should stick to 2x16GB?
I don't keep up with the memory market, I just remember being able to go 16GB back in 2013 because shit was super cheap at the time, and staying on that for nearly a decade.

It's for a Ryzen 8600G so I'd need to use some memory clocked fairly high for the iGPU. The cheapest 6400MHz 64GB kit I see is the PVV564G640C32K (Patriot Viper 64GB 6400MHz and I'm guessing CL32).
>>
>>103261308
Best advice when using any form of watercooling is to have an emergency air cooler on the ready so you can keep using your PC in case your loop runs into problems. If your CPU came with a stock fan you're all set, otherwise grab an Arctic.
>>
>>103261381
i dont have a lot of money on card (basically my whole budget), but since i have to go in person to order this anyway cause their fucking purchasing wont work for some reason, you think they would let me buy some stuff with cash as well?

And if so, what else should i purchase with the cash?
>>
>>103261413
Yeah that's how Microcenter works. They get you in the door with good bundles and hope you buy something else to make up their margin. Never having shopped there I can't tell you if they'll let you split the bill like that but IME most stores will. You should call them and ask.

Am I really missing out on anything by getting the $100 cheaper Steel Legend? I don't need 5 M.2 slots, 3 (1xGen5, 2xGen4) is more than enough. I don't care if using all 3 M.2 slots disables the PCIE_2 slot on the Steel Legend, because I have never used a 2nd PCIE slot. The GPU Ez release is probably nice, but I've never had trouble without it before, and I don't fuck around with my PC that much once its assembled.

What I can't assess the value of is the backplate, 5G lan instead of 2.5G and a 20+2+1 Power Phase versus 14+2+1. What does a backplate even do and why would I need one? Would I even be likely to be able to utilize 5G Lan as someone with burger internet? Is 14+2+1 enough to overclock a 9800x3d to moderate/respectable speed? If anyone could help with these questions, that would be great, because these are the only things giving me FOMO to buy a $350 Mobo.
>>
>>103261526
not really, you would need a new mobo and 5600 is generally fine at 1440p if you got a mid tier gpu outside of some "we coded npc ai like shit lmao, buy a 9800x3d for less unreal 5 stutter ;D! titles

AIOs are "minimal maintenance" as long as they work, but that does not mean they are immune to all the bullshit problems involved with water cooling. The pump can fail, water can slowly evaporate, the plates will need cleaning because they may get clogged which kills the water flow, etc.
So if anything breaks, you'll need to top them up with coolant, or even take them apart, scrub the cold plate with a toothbrush if it is clogged (repeatedly if there's more gunk in the tubes), change the pump if it failed, and so on. Not so fucking minimal maintenance.

vs. with even a cheap air cooler, nothing will fail, at worst you may need to change the fans every 4 years IF you find them getting noisier as their bearings wear out, or redo the thermal paste... both which you also have to do with AIOs too anyway.

there are amazing quality air coolers now, you don't have to bother with AIOs.

The recent G2 noctuas are considered the best performance 140mm fans on the market (at a considerable markup).

>>103261693
Their heatsinks, sure, but their fans are crazy good in literally all edge cases you can think of. bearings last fucking forever, startup voltage/pwm is lower than any other fan and extremely consistent and reliable, they may have the same noise level in dBa as other coolers but at a different frequency that is more pleasant to the ears, etc. And their warranty is ridiculously good. Like, if you make a recording for a 12 year old fan that it developed a dull, slightly audible clicking due to the bearings wearing out, THEY WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE despite it being out of warranty and the fan otherwise working perfectly. It's fucking absurd.

>>103261706
No clue about their warranty, but as far as I can tell they have similar build quality but at the lowest possible margin they can get away with. Like, 1/3rd or even 1/4th the price. I don't know the fans they use, they look like they use similar blade arrangements but I honestly never used them because I have a bunch of spare noctuas.

Full sized or 80% (aka TKL) are the only two valued options. The TK is literally for office drone work given that if you need a ton of buttons to hit on demand these days you can buy a mouse designed specifically for MMO's and run a macro off each button (usually with software that they provide), consequently nullifying their entire reason for existing in the first place since you never need to move your left hand or take your right hand off the mouse. Economy of movement, baby. But for FPS players? Retardation, mostly. Using a 60% or some shit isn't going to make you better at Valorant.

SSDs are commodities - check the internals and decide if they're right for your use case. I believe the A55 is a cheapo DRAMless SATA so it'd be fine for bulk media but not as an OS drive.

>is it worth having 2 M.2s btw or is that overkill?
It doesn't really matter for a data drive. You're mostly just price shopping - sometimes an M.2 will be cheaper based on what deals are running at the time.
Generally NVMe should be preferred since it has the option of HMB and more theoretical durability but slots are obviously at a premium so you might want to keep that open for something slightly more demanding than bulk media.

Vram packages arent as even as dies so medium that is more malleable and can fill in those gaps are better. Also less stress on your cooler since they squish out => better gpu core temperature and less likely to get weird hotspots. Also the top of the line putties are cheaper than pads. The only downside is that cleanup is a bitch.

There's is this guy who's been religiously testing a shit load of putties, go look at the data yourself

>>
>>103262366
well for poor people its important to find ways to invest more to get something genuinely good so theres no feeling of needing to upgrade early because you bought cheap shit

In that build 5700x3d would be better value cpu
16gb ram is fin
1tb ssd is kinda shitty, you'd rather just buy 1x 2tb one since the mobo has limited slots and you run out of space pretty quickly.
psu is just about fine
mobo seems a bit shitty, why does it have vga. Then if it has wifi/bt built in that saves trouble later if you need it.

With gpus you'd want to just buy used since gpus generally arent prone to breaking and they simply get more out of the money you invest. Like a used 3080.
>>
>>103262378

5700x3d would be a waste of money since he'd be capped by the rx6600.

Compatability fears can be eased with online part checkers that will alert if anything major is wrong.

No one says a 4090 is enough for 4K. 4K is such a stupid and demanding meme that you need all the power you can get. While it's no PS5 Pro, which can easily do 5K as it says on the box, the 5090 should be a significant leap due to all the new architectural changes coming. It'll also likely be $2,000. You'll still have to use DLSS though.

I want to pick up a 4070 ti super but can't decide on a model after reading some reviews.

Some say ASUS cards are made poorly, other say the TUF line are the premium card line that run silently.
Some say Gigabyte are the middle of the road card line, others say that they have poor customer service and use low quality parts.
That MSI make terrible cards and to never pick up the Ventus line. No actually MSI make great cards and have good customer support.
Coil whine
etc, etc

So I am asking for some guidance. If I want a 4070 TiS, and am not going to put it through the wringer, what should I be looking at?
>>
>>103262766
It's a hyte y70. I kept the cpu test going and stopped the gpu one so it wasn't at 100% and the temp goes back to 66 quite quickly. That's why I assumed the gpu was heating up the inside of the case. But maybe I need to rescrew the aio back in or reapply the paste, I don't know.

Gigabyte IS middle of the road and they have shoddy customer support because its basically automated with little help

any estimate on when the nVidia RTX cards are coming out, and when the next Ryzen chips are coming out? Wondering if I should buy Ryzen 7 or 9 now, or wait for a new line to drop and buy the current-newest line at a discount.

I bought this Ryzen 5 as a placeholder a while ago, because i had to upgrade my mobo for new ram, and thus needed a newer chipset as well. I told myself I'd buy a more powerful CPU shortly, and then... forgot.

I'm starting to feel the pain being CPU bottlenecked in higher end games these days, and my GPU is feeling a bit old now too. If you're cold storage archiving I'd just get as many TB for as low as possible that's usually used enterprise drives from WD/HGST from places like serverpartdeals.com. Do note these drives are a lot louder than regular drives.

If you want to use that in a NAS/Server I'd also buy used drives but always double the amount needed for offline backup or you can forgo that and cloud backup if you trust a cloud service. IF you want to buy new drives, usually Seagate Ironwolf or WD Red are the ones to get but WD have been overpricing their shit way too much recently imo. Toshiba is fine too,

The Barracudas are Seagate's cheapest drives, fine for storage and access not really for 24/7 use. I had one running in a NAS for a couple years thinking it was fine but Seagate's gonna Seagate and it went and corrupted a bunch of shit. Replaced it with a WD Red. But that is a decent price for a new 8TB HDD.
>>
>>103262841
MSI is chinese junk tier.
ASUS is either best tier or it burns down your CPU. Plus they have brand tax in their prices and their support is downright scamming you into buying a new item.
Gigabyte used to be the best but they fell down a lot over the years, they are still respectable however.

If I had to buy a new board it would be either Gigabyte or Asrock.

>>103262885
Toshiba and HGST are the best brands for HDDs. Seagate is mcdonalds tier (cheap, plentiful, bad for your health). WD is a mix of their own drives (for low size items, RED PLUS drives) or HGST (for high size items, they acquired HGST and keep it as a brand).

If you want to do archiving, only buy helium drives. They are higher end and higher capacity. Anything non-helium is either too small to be worth it over SSDs, or it is consumer garbo tier.

And for fucks sake, stay away from Amazon when buying drives, they sell refurbished drives (which in reality have 50k hours in them), sometimes even OEM/white label ones, with packaging so bad you'll be crossing your fingers so they still work. They are cheap for a reason, only really worth it if you are building ZFS Z2 arrays.

PSU has me covered, but my air cooler is an old budget model iirc. I'm not too fond of the room getting unnecessarily hot, but I don't know how much difference 70-100W of power will make.
>>103262965
>CPU temps only matter if you're running budget/midrange with poor cooling, or exclusively doing prolonged high-load shit.
'Good' cooling is just matching the CPU cooler TDP with the CPU TDP, right? And I assume prolonged high load shit is only for very extreme cases, and not everyday workstation use, plus rendering and whatnot.
>>103263004
>disable turbo clocks and you'll never have to worry about CPU temps even with the stock cooler
I'll try that, and see how it works. Recent CPUs don't seem to have stock coolers anymore. One of the reasons I'm asking is because I'd like to get a stronger processor, without having to splurge on another cooling solution.

>how big of an issue is it?
You'll get only meme answers here.
If you want to trust me:
Guaranteed within 2-3 years, which is why buying new with warranty is almost mandatory.
Depending on model + luck + workload, can happen as early as three months. You can google "oled burn in three months" and get dozens of stories if you want proof.
A lot of newer oleds claim to be burn in resistant but what it actually means is it fucks with your colors to keep you from noticing, which makes it useless if you care about color accuracy in productivity.
There's also firmware issues out the ass, like some Samsung qd-oled monitor that accidentally forced a burn in within a month if you forgot to update.

1. find your max stable FCLK by booting in async mode (keep RAM speed the same while increasing FCLK incrementally), almost always 1866-1900 MHz
2. increase your memory speed to match your max FCLK
3. lower memory timings, start by setting tRC to <= 60 and tRRDS/tRRDL/tFAW to 4/4/16 or 4/6/16 (these are crutches to make bad memory sticks stable)
4. draw the rest of the fucking owl

intel has always had only two generations per socket. going back as far as 1st gen Core. and most recently you even got 3 (12th, 13th, 14th). the reason amd can rape a socket for years is because the way they innovate is by buying the new TSMC node when it comes out

amd ryzen has lots of latency between cores (intel has very low latency between adjacent cores) and the cache helps alleviate the latency issues

Budget is $400 each for two, I'd be happy to go lower if the quality is still high but the OP looks a bit budget, I expect these to last me a very long time so I'd rather go high. Country is USA, I'm thinking I'll be going for a 4080 but don't know exactly what my upcoming build will look like, it will be in the ~$2500 range (excluding monitor)

yea we're losing the only company that bothers to make good chips. innovation takes time which intel ran out of so now they're forced to use tsmc. none of the competition has respect for the craft. youtubers need to be shamed for making everyone buy amd and depriving them of their chance to get a good chip. germany has 95% amd market share. now i understand why 1933 was able to happen. germans are lack judgement and are anxious so they just copy their peers. germans care so much for power usage you will find all the autistic power optimization threads on german forums (hear me out with corsair rm750x my system idles at 23w instead of 24w with picopsu) and they will still buy and recommend amd. hate dealing with these people

it's not like they didnt have full access to EUVL like TSMC, they funded R&D for it but just never made proper use of it

speaking of the actual machines, ASML is doing pretty good, it's just a problem with intel itself when they went too hard into beancounting in a very competitive industry

the way intel builds cpus is more in the interest of consumers. in the Core lineup you can always clearly make out chips focused on power usage (12th gen H stepping) and chips focused on overclocking (12th gen C stepping). now the issue is youtubers are retarded so they only care for 12900K, 12700K, 12600K which are supposed to be tuned, they don't do that and publish bad results. no one tests the non overclocking chips. everyone buys overclocking chips without being an overclocker. you can see which chips are popular by looking at reviews (12600K 300 reviews, 12600 20 reviews). now motherboard vendors have to build boards with huge VRMs and add markup. if people bought the right chip then vendors would build boards for both overclocking and normal and price accordingly. AMD cpus don't benefit from high power because the engineering is bad. AMD cpu always run close to collapse. you are happy that AMD cpu can't be pushed because it btfo's motherboard vendors alleged overkill VRM. their interest is building cheaper VRM. they can price board however they want and successfully sale because all the vendors cooperate. like how they all conspired to use bad thermal paste on their RTX 4000 cards to punish nvidia. currently in DIY market you have to actually be interested in computers and know your stuff because the masses are very wrong right now. and steve from gamersnexus is an insane shill

For gaming: AMD's 9600X or pay abit more for a 7600X3D?
>>
>>103264335
with amd chips there is no overclocking headroom. like buildzoid also says it. all the sliders pushed to the max which is why there is huge undervolting potential (like 33%) and the "new meta" with ryzen became undervolting. intel was forced to copy amd and introduce all these auto overclocking features like TVB because people won't stop buying overclocking chips complicating the job of actual overclockers. and causing the degradation issue
>>
>>103260716
I got a conundrum, maybe someone can help me get out of my own head on it.

My computers are old pieces of shit. I think my gaming PC right now is an 8th gen intel. I was wanting to buy a whole new machine from the ground up, but I wasn't buying it for gaming or anything like that, I was really just doing it because I wanted a simple machine for my living room I could do some remote work on instead of relying on this ancient macbook that's already overheating as I'm typing on it.

Are my priorities fucked? Should I be pouring this money into my gaming PC and using that instead? idk man. I feel like I play less and less games every year but that may be related to the fact that my gaming PC is practically from the stone age.
>>
>>103264370
Have you binned CPUs? Because I did for a bit and many of their i9s barely overclock 100-200mhz if you actually stress test properly. The worst 10900K I've tried could only oc 100mhz to 5ghz which was pretty pathetic.

there is decent variance with 13900k/14900k. a good sample is desirable. not much headroom either anymore because intel is making use of everything that node can offer. pretty impressive that with Intel 7 they match what amd offers with its much smaller litography

Can someone explain the idea of CAS latency to me a bit? I'm upgrading from a 2700X on an X470 board, and I'm looking at 2 different 64gb (2x32) RAM kits for a 9800X3D build. When I built my original rig, I kinda just went with whatever G.Skill set was in the recommendation at the time, but I'd like to make my purchase with a bit more understanding this time.
They're both 6000MHz CL30 kits, but one has 30-36-36-96 and the other is 30-40-40-96. I presume lower is better, but will this be an actual impact in performance, or does only the first number really matter?
>>
>>103264968

Retard newfag here. Can someone please explain why I might want one chipset over another? I'm looking for an AM5 motherboard and I don't know if I should go for a B650, B650E or an X870 board. Is it just that the latter two have faster PCIe slots that I might want in the future? I'm going to be using a 9800X3D most likely paired with one of the new GPUs in January, with the 4070 Ti Super or 7900 XT as backup plans.
>>
>>103265080
the fast pcie slots is for having several equally fast nvme slots, say you handle 4k video footage and need to transfer files from 1 nmve to another so you buy a x870 for it
for gaming its not really relevant
>>
>>103265090
>for gaming its not really relevant

>>

>>103265080
basically its a case of how much I/O do you want.
no matter what you buy you're getting at least a 16x pcie 4.0 slot and a 4x pcie 4.0 m.2 slot.
then the motherboards increase in specs including USB 4.0 and Pcie 5.0 everywhere if you want it.
the reality is most people are fine with a B650 seeing as the 4090 is barely bottlenecked by a 16x Pcie 3.0 slot so its not like a 16x Pcie 4.0 slot will be a bottleneck any time soon and really with nvme slots unless you're transferring between nvme drives you're not going to notice a difference between pcie 4.0 or pcie 5.0 and they're forwards and backwards anyway so the point is moot as you can just run a pcie 5.0 nvme drive in a pcie 4.0 m.2 slot.
>>
>>103264288
>>103264284
>>103264247
also a kvm switch, which I have no idea why would anyone with a PC need one
>>
>>103264988
CAS latency is basically how many clock cycles it take your ram to do anything
Other timings determine how long it has to wait between various different types of operations
The difference between those two kits is basically negligible, certain subtimings that are never listed are likely to have a greater impact, and by greater impact we're talking like 5% on the high end doing lots of tweaking and testing
>>
does gpu brand matter or should I just get the cheapest one?
>>
>>103265120
I'll go for a B650 steel legend then since it's quite a bit cheaper than the X870 version.
>>
>>103265152
So really just look for CL 30, the rest of the numbers aren't as impactful? I'm not the kind to do a ton of tweaking and testing, and with them being within 5 USD of each other, I'll go with the one that matches my case and mobo best. Cheers.
