R8 the poorfag build I have in mind:

The CPU in the Optiplex is an i5-3570, but it looks like I can swap it out with a Xeon E3-1280 v2 I have on hand; the sockets are the same, I think.

The only concerns I have are whether the GPU will fit, both in the case (not considering removing the drive bracket), and on account of the motherboard's layout (the RAM slots end up making contact with the GPU backplate in some builds I've seen).

I should mention that I've already got the PSU and GPU (I'm the retard from one of the previous threads who didn't bother checking if the GPU would fit my mb).

I'm interested in that particular model of Optiplex for its Libreboot compatibility.

Although the Xeon is (presumably) compatible with the Optiplex mb, I don't know if the CPU fan it comes with will accommodate it, since in the PC I've got it in at the moment, it's got a heatsink and fan directing air towards it with a plastic cover. There might be issues with overheating.

Upgraded an old pc from a DDR3 8gb 4core AMD to a used 10th i5 6core + 32gb ram.
Now I'm eyeing a 3060 12gb because all other cards are shit 8gb overpriced bs.

If I get a good deal on the 3060 mi total for the base (mb cpu ram gpu) upgrade will be under $400.

The VRAM is mostly for light AI sloppa, since I play mostly older games that have no problem at all with a 3060.

My first option was a used 1070 for about $80-100 but there's no good deals at that price. And the card itself its too old for my usecase.

Way back when the 10 series cards released I was a broke teen and desperately wanted to upgrade my PC. I found a for parts EVGA GTX 780 Ti for $15 at a flea market. I decided to try my luck and mailed it into EVGA to try and warranty the card. I thought for sure they’d send it back unfixed because I didn’t have proof of purchase and it was several years old at that point.

I've been told they all have bad customer service but my one experience trying to RMA a GPU was with MSI. I was getting some fan rattle at/near full PWM with my 4080 Ventus. Maybe within 24 hours of submitting a ticket, they sent me instructions to send it in for RMA. During that time I switched it from vertical to standard PCIE mount and hoped that would be easier on the bearings. It worked out, and I never sent my card in. So I'm not sure how smooth the RMA process would've gone, and I suppose maybe MSI uses cheap bearings in their "entry" level SKUs? That's all the info I can give.

No manufacturer makes only good 5070Ti, all them have crap in their portfolio. It really depends on the particular model. Look for the power limit and the cooling solution.
MSI VANGUARD SOC is probably the best 5070Ti you can get but not cheap. Powerlimit: 117% max. Large vapor chamber, 8 heat pipes.

got a superlight i charge it every two weeks or so. had a g305 which was also great but a bit small. got a hyperx cloud alpha wireless. can just freely move with it between sim racing, vr and regular usage (only problem is the dongle and lack of bluetooth but it's fine). it has like 300h of battery life. it's great. never had a wireless keyboard. latency is a non-issue on modern devices (especially with logitech and their 2.4ghz connections).

You can't prevent the degradation from happening with this connector it doesn't matter. That 4090 was always properly connected for the two years it ran and look what happened. It will be much worse for 5090 since its drawing even more power through the same flawed power delivery method. All 5090s will be in the trash in 5 years sorry facts don't care about your feelings.

Don't skimp on your CPU cooler. You can get a $30-$50 air cooler that will run circles around the Hyper 212 (from Thermalright, Scythe, ID-Cooling, etc). The mobo bundle is what's really saving your shekels here, and you're getting a nicer mobo in the process, but otherwise the price isn't that different than the prebuilt. Could probably shave a few dollars off the PSU and get something substantially quieter: the A850GL's fan /starts/ at 25-30 decibels, from the second it spins up. From MSI, the A850GLS is more efficient and doesn't hit 25dB until you've got 600W+ of load on it while also being $20 cheaper. You can get (close to) peak Gold/Platinum 850W performance in efficiency and noise from the be quiet! Pure Power 13 M for $10 less than that A850GL. If you're leaning towards a more established name like Corsair (Corsair, MSI and be quiet! all use the same OEM for their higher-end 850W PSUs) then the RM850X is the same price as the A850GL and is significantly quieter, while the 850e (different OEM than the RM850X) performs about the same as the A850GL but is quieter and is $10 cheaper. Will it make a huge difference in the long run? Maybe not, but if you're dead set on affordability above all, being able to cut the price by $10-$20 while getting better performance is a win-win.

All in all, you're spending only a little bit less than the prebuilt for a better mobo and power supply, but also needing to pick up case fans (pretty cheap if you're going with Arctics) and having to put it all together yourself. It's a bit of a wash, but if you're into the building aspect itself, it's worth it to buy the parts yourself.

I got a 9070 XT Hellhound the other day, upgrading from a 3080 10 GB. It's not night and day, but it's a nice improvement and makes some games that were originally a pain to play (eg STALKER 2, Monster Hunter Wilds) now completely comfortable even maxed out or near maxed out. Currently using one right now, coincidentally. Love the aesthetics of the case, love the temps, not a huge fan of building inside of it with a larger GPU (3+ slot and/or long), and the cutout for the motherboard power cable is a very tight squeeze with a regular ATX sized motherboard (a very harsh angle on the cable). All in all, I think it's worth the original MSRP, but not sure if I would spend $155 on it.

I'll take those other PSUs into consideration. I don't think the Montech would leave the purple range while I'm using it. I'm currently using a Corsair RM650x on this almost 7 year old build of mine. AMD 9070XT is great if you were going to buy anything at the 5070/5070Ti/5080 tier etc.. but the 5090 is clearly a bit different and the only NV card worthwhile in my experience - the 90 card has been the case pretty much going back to the 3000 series as the only one that is worth going NV as there isn't a decent AMD competitor, but you'll pay out the ass.

That said, there are still plenty of 3090 (which admittedly have better power designs than the later cards, sadly), but not all 4090 or 5090 are created equally - depending on the AIB, if nothing else it seems the Asus ROG Astral and Matrix are the ones with the biggest changes in the design possible as well as per-pin monitoring so you can see if things start to go to hell on certain wires or connectors etc, so its got the best chance by far.

is 9950x3D overkill? I don't game heavily but still game regardless. my main usecase is blender/3D rendering. I'm currently using a 5900x but I'm getting nervous that prices are going to skyrocket and I'm thinking about buying a new cpu/mobo right now then buying the super refreshes (assuming they get made) and getting a new rtx card with 24gb vram to replace my 3080 12gb. As much as I would like a 5090, I just can't justify spending $3k on it
