thee is no cheating in art.... unless you are fully just copying another person's art as it is.

the textures are amazing in this
the one thing i'd say to try is to get some of the darker areas on the left just as dark as you got the darker areas on the right hand side
>>7361422
the painting itself in terms of the background is very well done, especially with how much info it conveys, but i'd say to make the skin tones a bit less desaturated and to consider the pose and how realistic it'd be for someone to be sat in that way for next time (though this isn't a glaring issue)

So when I want to approach drawing something like this, is the first step always to make general shapes that imply the rest of the drawing? Or do I just start freehanding what I see?
>>
>>7361671
you can do whatever you want, but if you lack practical skills starting with more general shapes and working your way to more specific and refined shapes is simply going to yield relatively better results. it's much easier to lose the bigger picture when you freehand a drawing, but if you want to be able to do that well at some point by all means work on it to some extent.
>>
How do you guys define your art studying goals.
Right now I'm just taking a reference, doing a ~5-10min figure drawing and moving on. Not really focusing on anything in particular and not really moving in a specific direction, stagnating.
I have the idea that I want to get "better" but I can't clearly decide what that means.
>>
>>7361673
do longer studies. focus on accuracy
>>
>>7361673
I'm day 8 of practicing about 4 hours a day, so don't take anything I'm saying as advice, I'm mostly looking for critique off your prompt.

I start with an hour of drawing shapes, lines, and cubes, then practice for about two hours of 3/4ths perspective faces, finishing with an hour (or more depending on the day) of trying to apply forward facing/profile facing/ three-fourths perspective faces to different references I find.
>>
>>7361673
>I have the idea that I want to get "better" but I can't clearly decide what that means.
I don't mean this in a rude way, but I really don't think that matters. the more direction you have the better (I suppose), but if you have a vague sense which is clear *enough* to get you on the right track and you can make good progress with that knowledge, who cares if your definition of "better" isn't perfectly clear?

for me, I'm more or less just taking it one fundamental at a time. e.g., I'm trying to learn basic ways to break down the figure and simplifications of anatomy, so I'm going through Steve Huston's figure drawing book. the goal is simply to get *some* knowledge of what he's talking about and be able to apply it to actual drawings. then I might work on portraiture. there, more broadly, my goal is to improve the accuracy and process of my portraits. the specifics of that depend on the resource I will choose. you can let those "speak" for you and do your best to follow along - acknowledging that you're not gonna "learn" anatomy or rendering or construction merely by going through a book or a video course over the span of a month or more. also,
>Right now I'm just taking a reference, doing a ~5-10min figure drawing and moving on
I recommend adding a mix of longer figure drawings into your study regimen. shorter drawings are fine, and perhaps as a beginner or even intermediate most of your drawings should be shorter (<2hrs), but there's only so much you can do in 10 minutes. sometimes are problems are not that we don't have the knowledge, we just don't give ourselves the best opportunity to realize it in a drawing: sometimes we do that by limiting the time we allot ourselves for a drawing.

>How do you guys define your art studying goals

if your schedule is particularly bad, get into making a daily schedule. also, prioritize drawing. don't put it off and say "I'll do it when I get x, y and z done" when you're not even likely to do all of those in the first place; and if you are, you're still more likely to say "fuck it, I'll just draw tomorrow" at the end of it. even if it's just 10 minutes, say, try to do that as early as you can in the morning. go to bed 10 minutes earlier if you have to.

Learn a second language. It’ll help you learn to focus more naturally
>>
>>7361813
If you struggle with focus and motivation, having a separate place where you specifically go to draw can help.
If you draw on your room but that's where you sleep, browse the internet, work, and play games in, then there's already a lot of activities associated with that place and it's easy to lose focus. Drawing in another room until you create the habit of daily practice can be an option to help you focus.

Better than could do, but I'll give my thoughts
Gestural wise, I think putting the cow's shoulders at different heights like in the ref adds a lot more character and dynamism to the simple pose. The cutting board's are fine down cause she looks defeated, but even she has a slight twist in the torso. You've straightened out both of their poses quite a bit besides, so unstraightening those or maybe just adding your own twists would add a lot of character to the finished piece.
As for the pure construction, ignoring the ref, it looks good. Although, the perspective seems a little weird, like red girl's (I'm assuming Lina from all your Dota art) boob is nestled in between the cow's boob and her arm. And I feel like at this perspective they are standing on each other's toes - literally. I think using cylinders or at least contour lines on the limbs would be a good addition to your construction. Contours lines at the start of the arm, elbow, and wrist are usually what I do.
Overall, the construction is good, it's really the gesture where I think it lacks.
You art definitely has the appeal for what you're going for, I feel like you're one or two lucky retweets away from big success. Awesome work.
>>7361844
Take this advice with a grain of salt
Biggest area you should work on is the hip/legs, the hips need to flare out more than the shoulders, especially on a woman. Her incredibly narrow hips are also making her look relatively unbalanced, which is the source of stiff poses.
The facial features are also not aligned with the head, so they look worse than they actually are.

My bed is the procrastination zone where I go to doomscroll on my phone and my desk is the vidya zone and there's no room for another space dedicating to drawing here. I've had the idea of getting into my car and just stopping somewhere in the countryside to draw but after starting a new job that actually affords me the opportunity to do just that as part of the job it also turned out to be a wash.

By “focus more naturally” I mean during AND after actually. Since you’re learning how to interpret something that’s unfamiliar/foreign, you’re naturally thinking harder than you would when reading/speaking your native tongue. By focusing intently on something that isn’t drawing, you can take the level of mental energy applied to break down how you understanding the process of making art, since making art and language learning are essentially about problems and solutions

>I've tried paper stumps and my finger but they always get smudgier but not necessarily more filled in
idk about specific resources, but my advice would be to keep a sharp tip and minimize the erasing you do. with a duller point you're necessarily going to be missing more of the little grooves in the paper; and the more and harder you erase, the more you disrupt those grooves and it can't catch the graphite/charcoal/whatever material you're using. also perhaps consider the type of paper you're using, as paper with less tooth naturally is worse at catching its medium.
>>
>>7361984
also using a stump, say, too much and/or too early can mess with the grooves as well and hinder your mark-making.
>>
>>7361985
my worry is that if I use a sharp pencil that when I do eventually erase the groove will make it hard to draw what should have been there
I guess it might just be one of those things that gets easier as I get better in general.

>>
>>7361987
>my worry is that if I use a sharp pencil that when I do eventually erase the groove will make it hard to draw what should have been there
if you're not pressing the tip into the paper too much it's not going to be any worse if you have to erase than if you were using a blunt tip - in fact, because the surface area of the pencil would be covering less of the paper, it would necessarily affect fewer of the grooves. as you said part of it is your practical ability - which, if you continually work on it, will get better - but you can also start with lighter/softer lines. ultimately just experiment. if you're in drawing for the long haul, you're gonna be filling paper, filling sketchbooks. see what works, what doesn't; what has this effect, what has that effect.

>>7362000
I can understand your sentiment, so this isn't meant to be patronizing, but at any point the best thing to do isn't lament about your lot and lack of knowledge or skill but simply seek out information and try to improve upon your current abilities. if you haven't already, perhaps Arthur Guptil could be of help. he's mostly known for his book on pen & ink, but he also has a few books on pencil drawing as well. Rendering in Pencil is a consolidation of Sketching and Rendering in Pencil and Pencil Drawing Step-by-Step, but it's not in print afaik. though perhaps other anons in this thread or on /ic/ more broadly would know where you might go to learn about pencil techniques and different types of papers.

Tough to ask exactly what I mean, but I think it's understandable

When developing some skill in drawing something specific, does it happen as when you just get a feel for it, or as when you produce some formulaic approach to get what is needed? Or is it when you consciously understand what you get a feel for unconsciously, and can unconsciously get a feel for what you had to make formulas for?

not like i can draw faces either but you see faces all the time so the relations between eyes and brows and the nose are more natural

This is my 3/4ths drawing from yesterday. At the very least, I don't think you should be embarassed to post your art.

That said, as long as you can find things wrong with your art, and you're working to correct them with each new drawing, I don't think it's possible to not improve.
>>
>>7362678
>it has to be because i didn't start as an 8 year old like all the pro artists
plenty of artists who started relatively late came to draw well. it's a matter of not merely the amount of hours you've put in, but the quality of those hours, the specific instruction you've received along the way, and the sort of thought processes you've had while working.

if your tendency is to overestimate the size, then consciously reel it back some and see what the result is. but don't do this just once, do it dozens and dozens of times - hundreds even. if you can make an incorrect mark with such and such x,y coordinates, then you can move your hand ever so much over to the correct coordinates. if you're using references, work on your ability to measure; if you're drawing from imagination, read Loomis or some other instructor for generic proportions, how you can manipulate them to get an agreeable and realistic (enough) variation. also don't bite off more than you can chew. it'd be much more productive to just work on faces as opposed to faces and hair. then after working at faces for a bit (a few months perhaps, though it's ultimately you're choice how long you wanna set the time-frame) then focus on hair. then focus on general construction say, then perspective, etc.

Time to hop back on the grind.
>>
>>7362734
The grind.....I keep getting my brain cloudy so then I'm never consistent with my work.
>>
>>7362738
Consistent quality wise or quantity?
>>
>>7362742
I mean trying to draw almost everyday. It's hard to do it
>>
>>7362743
Meh, just draw as much as you can. I didn't draw yesterday though so it's over for me.

Any good guides for a more cartoony artstyle?

I've mostly practiced based off real life stuff so when I try to draw a bit more cartoony I end up making some stuff look more realistic and it looks a little uncanny.
>>
>>
>>7362747
Cartoonish here is that exaggerated muscle mass/proportions +the small head, the simple coloring and shading. Other than that probs any anime/cartoon style you like, copy works from that.
>>
>>7362750
Very nice. You are learning to become profficient with drawing realistic humans right? Otherwise, that won't help you draw anime girls any better
>>
>>7362731
try michael hampton's book and memorize the part about the torso and pelvis being distinct masses and your simplest figures will improve 3x
>>
>>7362747
it's just proportion differences with the same construction. buff people irl dont have massive ribcages and hands but this cartoon lizard thing does. it's also like 10 heads tall, incredibly tiny cranium like 1/3 the size of the guy on the left proportionately, huge jaw. etc
>>
>>7362746
Ok it said the drawing I made was done sep 17 so I think it's been like two months or more since I drew.
>>
>>7362750
All nice, just wanted to say the thumbnail and first few seconds of opening it made me think it's some gunboat mecha drifting to the left
>>7362755
Ackshually detailed bodies with anime girl heads are quite in demand among pervs
>>
>>7362755
>Otherwise, that
Nevermind, I may've misunderstood what you meant
>>
>>7362760
Holyy, well now your gonna draw at least 5 days a week right?
>>
>>7362757
Ok thanks pal

Uh... I mean that would be a smart thing to do. Have to push myself to do it

>How do you guys draw front facing anime girls?
I dont xd.
Now talking seriously, you have to find out which stylizations work for you, since it's awkward to draw symmetrical things and on top of that you are representing that stuff in a stylized way. How do you draw the nose for example? A dot? A shadow? More realistic?
What asymmetrical features will you use to make it less awkward? Hair? Mouth? Eyes? Incline the head a bit? Making the face turned at a slight angle?
>(Also color the lineart)
Do the lineart first, then use a layer mask and color it after it's done

Nice pose.

>>7362417
I think if you wanna share your drawings online, the scan looks way better.

>>7362430
She looks a bit stiff. Also I don't thinkl the cartoony face matches the rest of the study

>>7362521
I think you should scratch less. Use thicker lines if you must. I actually love sketching with thick lines since the concept is the same as scratching (you don't know where the correct line goes but know it's "inside" the thicker line)

>>7362750
Nice study!

Guess it's time to imitate Ben 10
>>
>>7362690
if you want a nose tip, i learned from legend of the galactic heroes, it has many styles of "european" noses
>>7362691
>don't do this just once, do it dozens and dozens of times - hundreds even.
if that's how it has to be
>>
should painting and drawings have depth of field like photos do?
>>
>>7362813
they don't have to have anything necessarily, it all depends on what your goal(s) is/are. if you want them to have depth of field, then try to realize that within them; otherwise don't pay it any mind.

Day 5ish here and have the opposite problem

I seem to be drawing much better than I should for how much experience I have, and it is making me nervous because once reality comes back on I will be devastated

That being said, 9 days is not a lot for progress I think, but you should be proud you have been at it for almost 2 weeks now! My couple of attempts have always failed after a day or two, I'm on my longest streak as well I think

Keep going!
>>
>>7362772
peak thank you about the lineart thing.
Sounds fucking obvious now but well, guess i am a bit of a moron.

anywho, guess i will just do a fucking dot to save time. I already waste lots of time worrying about stuff like that + backgrounds.
>>
>>7361648
Edgy kino. All it needs is a night sky background with a giant moon.
