>>64772752Sorry I can't contribute tonight, my own shop area is currently torn apart because I'm doing some structural work. It'll be a lot better in the end though, and I did a thorough cleaning first so I'll be ok for a few weeks.>fun meets>noooo what if there are feddds what if someone is weird you can't actually meet people who enjoy the hobby and have fun irl noooGod damn, I still don't understand quite how that swept meet threads so hard so fast. It was a real tone change on the board, along with the slow death of a lot of other old board culture and simple stuff like groups threads or whatever, even silly old stuff like /k/aturday that were nonetheless kinda nice.
>>64772830>Gun roomHell yeah, post a thread when its done. Share your floor plan for now, eh?My shed is cramped with all the hobbies... My bench is multipurpose, i can reconfig as i need to between funs, ammo, kars, /out/, plamo n such

Hello /k/, I am writing a story and would like some feedback please if my idea is feasible for a firearm. In the story a small number of people have to start out from scratch, they have their modern theorethical knowledge but nothing else. The goal is to make a firearm that is reliable and can take down big game. They are a couple years in, currently they can manufacture iron and low quantities high grade steel.Current constraints are the inability to manufacture mercury fulminate or lead azide nor can they draw thin-walled brass cartridges. My idea was they come up with an anachronistic rifle: single-shot, lever-actuated falling block action with a flintlock. .60 caliber, the barrel would be rifled, 32-inch long, for now wrought iron. Steel is used only for the mainspring and frizzen spring. For munition a paper cartridge. As far as I understand they would need to add a gas seal on the face of the block to mitigate leaks from the breech.Could you tell me how retarded is this for a first gun for a budding civilisation that needs force multipliers against megafauna? Feel free to suggest upgrades to be implemented at the start/down the line.
Other options? Mega fauna don't recognise traps even a little, so would just run straight into palisades, spikes mounted in the ground. The petard is enormously powerful, the issue is timing. One strategy would be to funnel fauna through a ravine, then set the petard off like a shaped charge, through the gap, hitting and panicking all the fauna trying to fry through at once. You might use bait to lure raptors into a gully then wound a number of them that way. Another option might be to use petard to defend a caveIt takes a very long time, a very long time to mine and work iron, that's why for a very long time copper, bronze was still preferred, with iron used only in tooling, to help shape the copper which is abundant as malachite ore close to the surface. Tin is also fairly abundant. How much iron can be mined in two years? With only stone tools? Not much. Crushing the ore is incredibly hard without industrial machinery and smelting it requires a ton of wood, or coal.Another interesting option is volcanic iron, witch is often found in balls or irregular shapes. But it's iron and you can just pick it up. Though unworkable, it would be great cannon shot. Dump that onto your bronze cannon, very effective. Making gunpowder, the best way is to farm and refine bird or bat shit, sulphur is common in many ores. Active charcoal is just made in a clay kiln. Potassium is found in potassium nitrate, which can be made through the reaction of concentrated niters (nitration)
>>64765784Do your people have a lathe? If so, you can turn brass cartridges. If not, how are you machining your barrels?
>>64770005>>64770049I plan on including primitive grenades before guns, hollow clay then bronze balls to be thrown, filled with jagged things. Thanks for your effortposts. The iron used in its base form as shot is clever.>>64770194Lathe is being worked on, I wanted to explore how could they make a functioning gun in what is basically a medieval smithy, they did it by hammer welding then finished the barrel with hand reamers. It is slow and wasteful but gave them invaluable epxerience working with iron, a psychological anchor and motivation to build a water mill powered lathe. The timeline is still quite fluid, I have only vague notions how the story would go. After the lathe is done the main block for proper cartridges would still be the chemical components required for primers, for a while.
>>64766072The idea of a breech loader predates metallic cartridge casings by centuries anon. The reason why it never took off in small arms prior to metallic cartridge casings is that there's really no other good way to do it. When humanity historically reached the point of technological development that you're talking about, they settled on the muzzle loading flintlock because that was the best way to do it under those constraints. This is unfortunately your best answer for this scenario.>>64770194Of what use would metallic cartridge cases be if primers aren't available?
So its just Doctor Stone. But with dinosaurs.

I can’t wait until Alberta separates from this dumpster fire of a country. Bertagen when? I vote our national rifle be a ATRS MS
>>64772869AT should just make a new rifle, that is compatible with real AR uppers/lowers, if that happens.
>>64772856I said a grandfathering thing would be bullshit, the possibility of an extended amnesty would be fucking hilarious, imagine how humiliating something like that would be for the libs.>>64772860The point is to not turn in shit until pretty much the absolute deadline, because the libs might panic if pretty much nothing happens and extend amnesty. Obviously Runkle is a lawyer and can't outright tell people to just break the law, so this is pretty much the "legally safe advice"
What are some good flashlight recommendations? Something for edc. Preferably not made in China junk.
I feel like I have restless .22lr syndrome more than I have restless AR syndrome. I haven't really change my AR in years
>>64768494there is no better suppressor host .22lr pistol than a MKIV. The only drawback is the low capacity, but that doesn't matter when you're just plinking/target shooting.
Any reviews of the updated ruger 10/22 (like the 30000 model)? I was going to do a Kidd build but I think I might get one of these new ruger models instead.
>>64768094A ruger single six is a bit expensive but it will last your lifetime and be something you'll pass on to your heirs (if you have any). A lever gun in .22 is just plain fun. I have a Henry, but I can't recommend new Henry guns as their QC and build quality have tanked in the last years.A single shot bolt action .22 is more fun than it has a right to be. Also, it will teach you patience in shooting, to make each shot count, because you have to with a single shot. Usually these are sold as baby's first gun because they fit that role very well for a lot of reasons. But do not discount their fun factor or their ability to be a teaching tool for yourself. Also, many of them are far more accurate than a rifle at their price point has any right to be.I don't know about modern pump actions, but I own a couple of old Savage Model 29s. Pump action .22s are also a load of fun, especially when plinking. For bolt action .22s you have the Ruger American Rimfire on the low end of the price range. It uses 10/22 mags and is probably the best bang for the buck in its price range. Very accurate for what it is. Plenty of after market if you want to change sights, mount a scope, etc. Higher in the price range are the CZ's. I absolutely love my CZ457 Jaguar. I don't believe you can beat it for accuracy at its price point. Spending more money than what you would on a CZ gets into (in my opinion) quickly diminishing returns territory. And it's really only worth it if you're shooting competitively or you really love 22lr and you've got the money to just blow on something like a Vudoo or a competition Anshutz. If you want something that is stupid accurate, keep your eyes out for a Birmingham small arms Martini Henry action .22 at auction. They usually go for less than 1k. They're old school, single shot competition guns.Old Military trainers shouldn't be over looked. I have an old French MAS 45 that is almost as accurate as my Jaguar.
>>64772460cont.You'll get all the fun of a box fed bolt action 22lr AND some history in one package. Just be sure to give it a good once over to check the condition. If you can handle the gun, bring a straight edge with you and check for any subtle barrel bulges. Why? Because conscripts are stupid, that's why. I had to return 2 guns to an auction house that didn't catch that particular condition issue themselves.
>>64771740Thank you for posting a gun. I've been thinking about getting the 16" threaded barrel too now that tax stamps are $0.

>>64772733Well, maybe some day you'll come to terms with your problems.

>>64772817What if I just dryfire? It's cheaper and doesn't involve driving an hour both ways
>>64772636Surefire way is to look for a shiny thread between the single action lever and the plastic sear housing. There's also a hole on the front of the sear housing at that location, inside the magazine well, but I believe there is a divot molded in now so that may not be an indicator that the set screw has been installed, plus Walther has been melting over the screw so it's not accessible from the front so it may just look like a divot when actually there's a screw hidden
>>64772817every day has been like 25 degrees with 15mph wind and 35mph gusts. im not shooting in that.
>>64772607I'm typically not an extra mag guy, but I will keep them in mind should i reconsider
>>64772636>>64772859I should say, you can pivot the single action lever to the rear with your finger to get a better view. If there's anything sticking out of the flat black plastic in front of the single action lever, it's the screw

I bet the Euros that bought F-35s feel really silly now that they're about to go to war against a country that can just remotely disable them with the push of a button.

Best weapon to kill a swarm of insects going after you?
>>64765461>Burning locusts fly everywere, setting ablaze everythingI don't think it's a good idea.
We once drove through a mosquito swarm for several minutes (or was a half hour, dunno). We had to stop at middle to clean the windshield since the there were so many bugs that the windshield wipers couldn't work properly. After leaving that swarm, we had to stop in a nearby town to clean the car's radiator.I do wonder how far bullets would reach if you'd start shooting at such dense swarm. Would be fucking neat to shoot dragon breath at the swarm tho

>>64769046obligatory reply
>>64771317Those are organizational issues of how many people need to be in the tank for it to function.Chieftain gave a great example of this.Imagine the Army adopted the Navy's Blue/Gold crew system for tanks. Each tank is operated by 2 but platoons still have 16 soldiers (2 sets of 2 for each tank). This gives you the bodies for all the auxiliary tasks while actually allowing you to keep the tank operating 24/7.
>>64768846Turbines are great and you shouldn't listen to the diesel shills, but direct mechanical link is a bad way to use a turbine engine for a ground vehicle. They have narrow powerbands and poor transient response, the best way to use a turbine is spinning a generator for a turbine-electric or hybrid drivetrain.
>>64765097It's not that you can't run a tank with 3, it's that at the time the benefits of a fourth crewmember outweighed the benefits of the then-available autoloader technology. It appears they now believe the benefits of an autoloader outweight the benefits of a fourth crewman, so they'll make adjustments elsewhere to accomodate three man crews.Saying you prefer one option is different from saying you think it is infinitely always superior and will never be surpassed.
