any excuse to post sharp objects is a good one.
here's the finnish puukko. comes in many varieties, often with regional variations depending on very local craftsmen from small villages.
this example is probably from härmä desu.

radars are (at least for F-15EX and latest block F-16V) about equivalent but the F-16 (especially if it has have glass RAM) will see the F-15 first because the F-15 is much less stealthy.

not even close, F-15's radar is twice the size. the only question here is whether both planes' radars are more than capable enough in any combat scenario they'd find themselves in against each other since they're both non-stealthy 4th gens with state of the art electronics in them.

>>65049917
sure, they carry the same armanents and have their own advantages when maneuvering, with F-15 being better in BVR due to superior acceleration, top speed and climb rate while F-16 being a more nimble dogfighter, but not to a very large extent.

what F-15 is massively superior in is combat range, which is several times that of the F-16, especially carrying a substantial payload. this allows the planes to cover a greater area deeper into enemy territory for air superiority and strike missions.

Wrong. Israel was not that important in the Cold War, and was considered an uneasy counterbalance. Israel worship is a post-Cold War phenomeon.

What reason would there be for war in a world where energy is plentiful and cheap, and so too then is basically everything else? How are US actions inhibitive of control, when Israel is their staging grounds for any war they'd need to wage on middle eastern countries that challenge the US? You could also say their actions do change in correlation with domestic production, which is why after their capture of Venezuela and the largest reserves, while being one of the world's biggest refineries, they are now looking to get the fuck out of the middle east, which they can use the disastrous Iran war as an excuse for.

The reason is actually the waste slag created and the fact that economical extraction is extremely unfriendly to the environment as it is is a very low concentration, needs things like mercury, and often comes with lots of other nasty heavy metals you have to dump.
Also finding deposits is expensive.
The UK only exists so high only the list because they still have a WW2 mine in cornwall that periodically makes bank every time there is a shortage, but this requires long term infrastructure and investment for the future at the expense of short term environmental impact, something modern nimby democracies with 4 year cycles and short term goals just do not do.

My C308 has a Fren now. A PTR-91 A3SK. Got it in a trade from a dealer who had a new/old stock one from California so I promptly de-Californicated it. Currently has a Turkish collapsing stock and a Paki wide handguard.

Does anyone know if these take standard G3 flash hiders or are they threaded like US AR-10s? It has the solid metal Faux-hider meant for California and I have an HK-21 FH on the way. I suspect I might have fucked up ordering it because the thread pitch might be different. Also did they just spin them on for CA or is it rockset/locktite in place? I don't see any signs of pin/weld like the C308 brake is.

Also yes that's a 1980s Thermold magazine I got for $5 because it looks cool. I don't actually use it.

The only real problem with the BMP-1 is that the soviets struck gold once and refused to change their way of thinking around IFVs ever since even though the BMP including all its derivatives were obsolete in the 80s. Do you need special munitions to take out power plants in a similar way to runway cratering and taking out hardened bridges?

It seems like Russia and Ukraine just take the route of trying to hit critical components and grid connectors but we've seen that so long as you have access to components then you can quickly return to business after a strike.

Opinion discarded

Since the Iran war is so controversial, let's think about a war absolutely nobody would have a problem with.

This morning, the President of the United States has tasked you with preforming a great service to humanity: The invasion of India. What happens to them after the war is up to you, if you'd like to genocide them, balkanize them or maybe try to make them into a functioning country or whatever. The objectives from the POTUS are fairly straight forward.

>The destruction of the Indian military
>The destruction or control of their nuclear weapons (They do have a nuclear triad so, it's important that's nipped in the bud before any issues arise)
>The Pacification of the Indian civilian population. Through any means necessary.

ITT we talk about how we would go about destroying India and what we'd do after they've been defeated. You can go about it anyway you want, not just a military campaign - be it a direct intervention; inciting a civil war through espionage or economically. Extra points for describing the methods of depopulation.

Picrel is a map of all the major sites and military installations

A handful of anglos with muskets and a few cannon took all of this single-handed. Three or four bars and I'd have enough to occupy the sub continent for a generation.

>Step 1: Naval blockade
As the economic effects of that play out things will get much easier for step 2
>Step 2: incite internal tension
Pull on the ethnic, religious, and caste divisions within Indian society, push as many of them to turn violent as possible, laying the groundwork for your eventual occupation
>Step 3: If step 2 doesn't work let Pakistan believe that you'll let them keep all the land they can take from India
You won't, of course, but there's a decent chance that this leads to at least a limited nuclear exchange, which should cause enough damage to make the eventual occupation a lot easier
>Step 4: After occupation encourage as many Indians as you can to relocate to China
Just for the giggles

If mid-Cold War had sea skimming missiles but no reliable CIWS / SHORAD, how were ships expected to not die?
51 replies and 4 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>65046221
For the NATO? ECM, which those early active radar missiles were susceptible to, and combat air patrols. For Soviets? Die.
>>
>>65049396
In that case my knowledge has been expanded.
>>
>>65049156
>When cold war-era missile seekers go active they don't know which target to prioritize, they simply lock onto the strongest return
Not all of them. Some had a tiny bit of logic built in that was able to randomly select one of the strong returns.

The idea was that this would cause a missile salvo to naturally spread out instead of overkillling the first or largest return, and it might help against chaff clouds.
Soome missiles also had IR seekers, and some could be set to home-on-jam.

It mamy loook primitive from today's perspective, but they were really pushing whaht their electronics could do.
>>
>>65049705
Yeah but that's implying the formation is very close together. And while Cold War era formations were tighter than today, it was still feasible to station a ship far enough forward on the threat vector to eat the salvo.
>>
>>65046317
Falklands was the war where every nation realised how vulnerable their ships were to ASMs and adapted.
The UK didn't have adequate defences during that war, but you are correct in that they did have some attempt at a defemsive system.

Modern warfare is just the next generation of adaption that's been happening over 20 years at this point.

It's just unobtanium. They were fairly competent as far as 1970s bullpups go, and the lever delayed blowback system is novel but it isn't any better than a basic AR-15 or AUG.

Still, it would have been nice to get them as parts kits. A tiny number of semi auto versions were imported in the 1980s which is basically the only way for an American to ever hold or shoot one. God help you if you lose or break the magazine as well, which was intended to be disposable and is virtually impossible to replace now. They did make an AR pattern compatible G2 but that never made it to market here.
>>65049022
Politics. The military usually has their hands tied and is required to destroy surplus inventory because politicians don't want egg on their faces when some idiot makes the news shooting up a school with a gun or piece of surplus gear they sold. Germany had a huge "oh shit" moment when all the cheap flecktarn kevlar vests they dumped ended up being used by Azov in Ukraine. That's why those vests went from being $34 a pop to unobtanium overnight. They destroyed their remaining inventory in 2015/16ish.

Now it's a nightmare for any military in Europe to sign off surplusing anything. It happens, but usually by a 3rd party country. For instance they send old helmets/uniforms/rifles to a small backwater in their sphere of influence and those guys sell it commercially once they have finished thrashing it. It's not impossible to get some FAMAS kits that way from some smaller French speaking country many years from now. I suspect that's where we recently got some French marked Sig 540 kits from.

This.
It wouldn't have met parity, but given everything they (didn't) have to work with, it's an impressive achievement.

>Country can't manufacture a metal wheel.
>Tank, sans guns, can be built in backyard of average farmer with local materials and local skill level.
>Impregnable to small arms fire. Requires AT to take it out.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot wrong with it. It's taller than a Maus, slower than one too. It can't turn while moving. It gets penetrated by any AT grade munitions. It never got a proper cannon.
But it's a genuinely cool bit of history, and for what Semple himself was working with, it's a damn impressive achievement.
