I am a musician. I had a band and played shows and released an album years ago. I've struggled to even find someone to jam with since then.

Are there any literary works worth reading from this region?
I only know of Ibsen's plays and Andersen's tales.

Do you genuinely enjoy reading or are you just pretending to be well read? Be honest

I can't even tell which are the books on the top row other than the alchemist, otherwise of the listed ones I've only ever read Ulysses and Odyssey, if that is what's the rightmost book on the bottom.
Of the other books, I do not pretend to have read them, in fact, I tend to exude obnoxious smug superiority if they ever get brought up in a conversation and I get the chance to express my disinterest in them.

Anyways, while I enjoy reading, I'm pretty inconsistent and bad at it, so I naturally also act as a pseud pretending to have read a lot more than I have.
>>
>>24747970
At first I was pretending to impress my parents/teachers then I was pretending to impress myself then I was pretending to impress a girl. Now that i actually have a mind of my own I've come to enjoy reading and stopped forcing myself to finish uninteresting books.
>>
>>24747970
>Do you genuinely enjoy reading
Why else would I do it. Having other interest would be more convenient so why pretend.

Is political philosophy/theory dead? What’s the status of the field, and who are the most relevant authors/scholars today? Surely there’s more out there than Deneen and Fukuyama, right? Thiel seems to be ripping his toes into it again with his talks on the Antichrist and world government.

Obviously IR theory is alive and well with vigorous debate, but I meant actual political philosophy, with Strauss as an archetypal leader in the post-war generation.

retard, kys. its like you dont understand language or basic concepts. maybe thats why Nietzsche's love of untruth is so appealing to retards like you. This is a speculation, with relevant basis unlike your psychologizing
>>
>>24747825
In this day and age where you can download all of Nietzsche's books as PDFs in 20 minutes and search them for every instance of the word "Kant" there's really no excuse for making such idiotic posts like this one.
>>
>>24750473
lol. notice nietzsche followers never provide basis for anything, just call you some self aggrandizing name like nietzsche does other philosophers, dont even do the bare minimum of offering an olive branch of referencing something that could easily be cross referenced with a google search, vs downloading and scouring for somebody else's burden of proof
>>
>>24750162
>its like you dont understand language or basic concepts
From the start I told you you're illiterate and every post just demonstrates that.
Worse still you don't even try to understand anything, you spend all your efforts on sperging out incoherently.
>you feel
In this context this is a reference to whatever subjective "faculty" in you makes you value logic. If you try to formally state what that is you'll end up appealing to the power that valuing logic gives you, like the predictive power of formal models.
>>
>>24750491
I have already read his books which is why I know a 30 minute talk on his views regarding Kant is modest. Searching "thing-in-itself" and "subject" will also bring you in proximity with those views.

Are we more prudish in some ways now? When I read old books, people including men say stuff like "he is as serenely beautiful as Endymion" or "she has such pretty feet" but nowadays you'd seem weird if you did so, even in a piece of fiction - at the very least you wouldn't be able to say them innocently and without irony

>probably it began as a welcome reaction against the ridiculous, insincere hyper-expressiveness of the preceding centuries
I don't see it this way at all
I view the modern culture as one that specifically circumscribes and punishes sincerity
this has come about because people have been increasingly raised/conditioned (and infantilized) to find depth/complexity/sincerity disturbing and indigestible, and by this very incapacity have been made the prison guards of expression
I consider the increase in discomfiture among young people regarding sexual display/content in films to be a related phenomenon

Remember, no matter how niche or unpopular your intellectual interest is, there will always be some Hollywood faggot to turn it into a garbage franchise.

It gets worse, the lady knight's love interest gets force femmed by another man while she watches and laughs.

Or why fantasy books are overwhelmingly romance erotica slop.

I don't know about the specifics of the publishing industry but it doesn't seem absurd all things considered. From the names alone, it seems like he made his career in shitty independent publishers where salaries and job stability aren't really good. And I assume it isn't easy for some O'Brien nonce looking Oklahoma corn farmer whose connections consist of the local pig breeder and his meth addicted cousin to break into HarperCollins in New York.
>>
>>24747738
All modern moids do is whine and seethe instead of giving patronage to the things they enjoy. It's no wonder romantasy is so popular. And you can still buy mid fantasy with Gary Stus, but you can't even be assed to search for them, can you?

This! So much this! The publishing industry is skewed towards dumb women who read Harry Potter and dumb romance novels. It should cater towards men, who have better taste and read things like sci-fi and Elon Musk's latest authorised biography.

>we don't need to pretend that people have never focused on quantity over quality
you're a fucking retard who can't understand differences in magnitude and relative prevalence
the rest of your comment is basically projection
as a bonus I'll go ahead and quote myself from February
>let's take a look at pic related
>where would one even go to find an equivalent list like this today, covering books of the last 20 years? do you suppose the reviewing/taste-making/filtering apparatuses of today would have the balls to include something like Mein Kampf, if only to deride it, or even Freeman's biography of Robert E. Lee?
>oh yes, and who are today's Eliot, Hemingway, Mann, Saint-Exupery, Cather, Fitzgerald, Lewis, Steinbeck, Huxley, etc.?
>then there's the matter of quality itself, and concordance with future value/importance: from our much-later vantage point we could surely make some changes and fix some omissions, but as a whole it was a worthy effort with solid predictive power, and one does not get the sense that it is merely crass advertising or a dishonest circle-jerk
as you've now been assfucked into oblivion, I recommend you take your own advice
>>
>>24750359
Take the L. The current state of affairs, both in the publishing world, and politically, are all the fault of dumb feminists ruining everything.

You're in charge of the publishers, you're in charge of education, you're in charge of the economy, you're in charge of Hollywood, you're in charge of the decline in marriage and birth rates, you're in charge of the surge of OnlyFans, flooding every website from Instagram to Linked In with your ass pics, you're in charge of BookTok, you're responsible for Twilight, 50 Shades, and Horny Eragon Fanfic, and keeping Harry Potter relevant 20 years after the final movie came out. Take a bow. Pat yourself on the back. Adopt another stray cat. This mess is all you. You kicked men out and have no one else to blame now. Enjoy it.
