>It seemed like it could have been an interesting discussion
I think I got this.

Both Hal and Singer exist primarily to fulfill roles for the people around them and beyond that role, they don't really exist. This starts out as enough for them, they have something which makes the isolation bearable. but they lose those things and realize that it was never what they thought it was, it was a surrogate, a cope. The secondary characters are used to elaborate and explore it in more depth, they are complicit but also victims of the same thing. Hal even ends up unable to speak but he never really spoke in the first place, he just said what was expected, the few time he actually attempts to communicate, no one understands him even if they can understand the words he is speaking.

I think there may actually be a great deal in common between them but it has been awhile since I have read either, the biggest difference being that Carson was more interested in the effect, DFW the cause. Think I might reread them in the near future.

>The whole point of the Inferno is that Dante the Pilgrim is deeply flawed and that the view of God and the cosmos we get it that of the damned.
Why does all Abrahamic faith seem to boil down to this single claim of
>Bro I know earthly logic and reason is finding holes in my scripture and lore tome but it's about FAITH bro, you need to BLINDLY submit and just trust it will be OK, it's just beyond mortal comprehension nigga you simply cannot know but it's real I swear
Like at that point would you even want to experience the sort of Maximum Paradise that is, apparently, unknowable and undiscoverable to humans without help from this spurious entity that bears no apparent resemblance to mankind? "God created man in his image" is the claim, yet the ultimate end goal of mankind, the Heaven of heavens they all yearn to reach and will allegedly reach if they live in a very particularly pious way, is completely out of our reach except through this single entity that we're told is above human comprehension. How can it be both things at once? At that point it seems akin to putting a lobster in front of a Bloomberg terminal filled with a trillion dollars, it can't possibly comprehend the wealth nor power at its disposal and it never can, even with help. Oh but we're told that using our natural-born brains to try and make any sense of this is actually the path to HELL and you will suffer for infinity years if you don't fall into line and believe stories about a giant boat with every animal on it. Every time figures like Aristole or Plato come up, every Christian sweats and wrings their hands and has to make up new shit about how these unenlightened backwards barbaric pagans produced a more coherent line of thought than they did, ever.

>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>have mental stats that go up with level ups
>refuse to put numbers on anything, just explicitly say when a character does something Intelligent or Willpower or Charisma and tie to their current level in that stat
>literally no complaints
It's that easy. Keep things vague, hack it together, ignore anyone who tries to predict the story based on numbers. """I""" am the author! If I want to write some bigass threat coming in, I will, regardless of MC's stats! They don't mean shit!
Of course I also do have character arcs and I have characters reface earlier threats or stumbling blocks and show them clearing them with ease so that may or may not help.

I looked around and immediately realized that I was a Chinese webnovel protagonist. Finally, everything became clear to me, all at once. I was now aware of my destiny.

I then cast a spell that killed every person with the blood of that one guy who outbid me on that herb I really needed at that time, and this act wiped out a whole ethnicity from the face of the planet. I snorted coldly then murdered, in succession, my parents, siblings, close friends, friends, acquiantances , lovers, and finally my ex-lovers because, again. i was the protagonist of a Chinese WN.

Welcome to /pg/, where we read, write, and discuss pulp fiction.
No, not the Tarantino film, but the classic genre stories from early 20th-century magazines printed on cheap wood *pulp* paper. These tales offered thrills for the common man and let imaginations soar.
Though the magazines are gone, the spirit lives on, and here at /pg/, we explore the worlds, characters, and stories they inspired. So come on in and join the discussion!

>Who knows more about horses, a biologist who studies horses and the literature on them or someone who lives with and has trained horses their entire life?
Even when given total freedom to craft an analogy that perfectly supports your point, you fall well short of the goal.
There's not so much as "knowing about horses". Do you mean horse medicine? Horse husbandry? Are you working for a farm, or a vet, or a horse trainer?
A person who has worked with horses all their life would make a good trainer or breeder, but they'd be a lousy and dangerous vet, and their skills may not easily transfer to a role that's outside the region they learned in, eg. American horse management vs. European, or even Montana vs. New England.
That's why schools exist. You take your passions and (relatively) limited lived experiences and learn how to generalize them, or alternative to specialize them. You fill in the gaps, and learn how to better respond to new information and ideas once you're outside of school.
It isn't some machine taking your passion for horses and killing it, and it's not some imagined person who loves horses but only academically (??). It's a tool, one of many, that you use to pursue your passions, even if your passion is simply "make money in the least miserable way possible"

There are subjects that cannot be taught through literature alone, either because the knowledge is so esoteric or because there are few people teaching it. College is good for that.
The competency crisis across many white collar jobs is turning them into trades, though. They are less about credentials, more about getting your foot in the door for internships. Criminal law is quickly becoming one of these.

China grew into suffocating overpopulation while already under militant, enforced atheism.

Shit follows standards of living, and doesn't care one bit about religion. Wealthier have lower birth levels and higher suicide levels, impoverished shitholes have high birth levels and low suicide levels. Those two correlate with religion only as far as increased standards of living and education adamantly cause drops in religiosity.

no, that's leftist ideology/philosophy, as their central theme always comes down to prevention of suffering which naturally leads to a rejection of life. Ironically that is downstream from christian thought.

I compared it to ancient Greek literature and I just see the Hebrew Bible as totally devoid of empathy except in Genesis. The Greeks acknowledged and depicted the brutality of war but there is always a sense of the suffering that the losers have to go through, even when they’re the enemies of the Greeks. In the Hebrew Bible it’s just so psychopathic toward people the Jews are fighting and unrelentingly vindictive like, “blessed is he who smashes thy little ones’ heads against the stones.”

This is completely retarded revisionist babble. Christianity does not preclude violence and violence was instrumental in creating and establishing Christian nations.

Christianity was spread by the sword, modern Christian nations are just cowards who have been divorced from violence for a century and choose half their holy book to pay attention to if even that.

A very apt summary.

>The illiad shows the enemy Trojans in a sympathetic light.
Even more than that, the Trojans are substantially more human than the Achaeans. All relationships in the Achaean camp are political (even Achilles in his grief). And yes, the political is necessary to human life. However, no one exchange approaches the humanity, the personal relationships, expressed among the Trojans: a) Helen and Paris in Book 3, b) Hector and Andromache in Book 6 (which breaks my heart every time I read it), c) Priam's visit to Achilles in Book 24, and d) the laments of the women for Hector, also 24. The one exception to the Achaeans would be the lament of Briseis for Patroclus in 19, but it must be remembered that Briseis is ethnically Anatolian.

I would also note The Persians by Aeschylus, in which he likewise humanizes the hated enemy by detailing their home life, an enemy he himself face on the battlefield. Empathy with the enemy is a very rare human trait, and it should be numbered among our dearest possessions. Even Christianity's Golden Rule is entirely self serving. 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' Or just be a good person for the sake of honor and justice. 'Store up treasures in heaven.' Or do good deeds without expectation of benefit, you spiritual shekel grabber.

Sorcery, Wizardry, Witchcraft, Psionics, and General Magic and Powers Edition

FAQ:
>What is worldbuilding?
Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fictional worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Worldbuilding asks questions about the setting of a world, and then answers them, often in great detail. Most people use it as a means of creating a setting or the scenery for a story.
>"Isn't there a Worldbuilding general in >>>/tg/ already?"
Yes, there is. However, that general is focused on the creation of fictional worlds for the intended purpose of playing TTRPG campaigns. Here you can discuss worldbuilding projects that are not meant to be used for a roleplaying setting, but for novels, videogames, or any other kind of creative project.
>"Can I discuss the setting of my campaign here, though?"
If you want to, but it would probably be better to discuss it on >>>/tg/ . We don't allow the discussion of TTRPG mechanics, however. If you want to discuss stats or which D&D edition is best, this is not the place.
>"Can I talk about an existing fictional setting that is not mine?"
Yes, of course you can!
>"Does worldbuilding need to be about fantasy and elves?"
Worldbuilding, as already stated above, and contrary to what many believe, does not inherently imply blatantly copying Tolkien. In fact, there are many science-fiction setting out there, and even entire alternative history settings which do not possess supernatural elements at all. Any kind of science fiction book has an implied setting at least, which involves a certain degree of worldbuilding put into it.

>>
>>24743889
>How does someone become immortal?
By linking themselves to,containing within themselves, or otherwise becoming a mana/arcane energy nexus. Because of this there is a small point/gate/disk/whatever within them linked to a inexhaustible magical energy source that they can draw from at all times.
Exactly how this done is kept the highest of secrets by the very very few that know and understand how such things work. Some of the immortals themselves have no clue how and would never figure it out in a million years.

Pretty sure I wrote of them before in these threads.

>the exorcist had already been through before me.
Did the parents only call the spirit-exterminator on Sarah’s ghost?
Or on all the truck stop’s incubi and succubi?
If it was just their daughter, you missed out on the novel comedy of asking an exorcist to yeet “Just the one.”
>I had to climb escarpment rather than drive up to the motor inn, well, because the direct approach seemed inappropriate somehow. I knew this didn’t make any sense.
Overwhelmingly disappointed with this.
You can’t just handwave away the imagery the story was written on!
Like, no, have the MC try their best to make it make sense.
Shame? Dissociation? Self-flagellation?
I can do the work for you and realize that this moment parallels the only meaningful way the MC and Sarah interacted—her breasts “brushing up” sideways on him—but I’d so much rather know for certain that that’s what you meant for me to see.
>Accidentally, I shined my light into a trucker’s cab, waking him. He rolled down his window, made a piercing finger-in-mouth whistle at me, and blew a raspberry.
Terrible ‘Ambrose Chappell.’
At least have this red herring be related in some way to the subject matter or themes of the story.

I also love how a physical truck is essentially “a phallic-looking thing that tugs its load,” so there’s an entendre that the MC is just truck driving when their orgasm “came.”

Your piece would be much stronger if this was your second paragraph, cutting out the two that came before.
>her eyes would light of with the fear I chased.
“light up”
>I guess I took out my frustration on her
Your third “I guess”—the conversational tone should be freeing, not hamstringing.
>As I drove past the TruckOasis the tonight on my return trip
Remove the second “the.”
>I saw a man with a flashlight looking through the brush
Woefully weak verb, “looking,” for this action.
There’s “combing;” “picking;” “plodding;” “scanning;” “sidling…”
>my rotten pecker was engorged as I came to realize that I may soon become a wanted man.
Wayta destroy any pretense of this actually being a serious attempt at creative writing.

He was right about literally everything and you people laugh at him.

“In his dreadful lassitude and objectless rage, Cobain seemed to have give wearied voice to the despondency of the generation that had come after history, whose every move was anticipated, tracked, bought and sold before it had even happened. Cobain knew he was just another piece of spectacle, that nothing runs better on MTV than a protest against MTV; knew that his every move was a cliché scripted in advance, knew that even realising it is a cliché. The impasse that paralysed Cobain in precisely the one that Fredric Jameson described: like postmodern culture in general, Cobain found himself in ‘a world in which stylistic innovation is no longer possible, where all that is left is to imitate dead styles in the imaginary museum’.”

This. He should have gotten into gaming, maybe he would have seen advancement and auteurship somewhere instead of killing himself like a faggot.
