According to Hesiod, the purpose of literature is to give men relief from their pain
>>

Reading philosophy and the Greeks just gives me mental pain.I beat myself up trying to understand political philosophy and metaphysics. I wish I was stupid and always stoned sitting by the side of a lake watching the sunset every night instead.
>>
>>24798988
does that only mean escapism? art is a conversation with the artist. fiction teaches you about the author - his own weaknesses and follies - and, since you must know that no failings are unique, you may be helped to acquire tolerance for them in others. if the novel comes off at all, the reader will accompany the writer in some parallel process of self-discovery.

I only read Thank You For Smoking and I can confirm that had a femdommy in it. I can’t speak for any of the other books though.

I’m reading the dads books and those have sex in them too so I don’t think the dad would be too disappointed.

To be fair that is true. Women have no business making decisions for themselves or anyone else. Women subconsciously recognize this and blame all of their poor decisions on men, even as they insist that they are capable of having responsibilities. The cognitive dissonance of being a woman would be torture, if they had the same intellect and awareness as a man.
>>
>>24798340
Women never fantasize about being powerful themselves, only having power over something that already is, and therefor, are able to control and wield and possess it. Women don't want to be fucking ripped and swinging axes on the battlefield, they want that man reverse subservient to their wishes. Thus they are always fucking billionaires and monsters and pirates.

No. The truth is more stupid than that. Finance bros are just like /lit/ bros. They love showing off shit they haven't actually read. Bro just googled good finance books and ordered them off of Amazon. Probably skimmed a couple and then a took a pic of his cool knowledge stack.
>>
>>24798620
Well it’s funny that half the finance books must shit on those MBAs then. Taleb certainly does. That said the financebro label is far bigger than actual MBA holders otherwise this book market wouldn’t even exist.

i think the problem is society has left men behind but the right always assumes the solution is a return to tradition/pre-modernity and lefties are just condescending snowflakes who shit on men for just wanting to work hard and have a family.
both things can be true
>>
>>24798789
If you're not willing to care enough about others to at least try to make yourself attractive to them, then expecting praise from those same people comes across as narcissistic. Don't expect people to respect your opinions when you show up in unwashed hair and crocs. It's not all about you.
>>
>>24798914
Yeah but one of those opinions helps my in-group succeed and the other doesn't. I'd be an idiot not to take advantage of the other side's stupidity while downplaying the stupidity of my own. If I end up feeling hypocritical, I just remind myself that the other side is full of easy-to-dehumanize monster demons that will destroy society through their stupid malice. So it's okay to be cruel to them and operate on different layers of logic, actually. Anyone saying otherwise is trying to use clever wordplay to make my side lose.
Why is it that the bad guys in political cartoons almost always look like nazi depictions of "degenerates"?
>>
>>24798914
> the right always assumes the solution is a return to tradition/pre-modernity
Everytime I see that """solution""" incessantly parroted in right-wing spaces I heartily laugh because I'm forever reminded of Yukio Mishima: a man who was the literal embodiment of traditionalist ideals and fervant rejection of modernity, and a deeply closeted homosexual that died an extremely violent, agonizing death.
Yukio was the absolute apex of the conservative "reject modernity" ideal, and look where that lead him.

Tomorrow morning 10:00am BST the Character and Theme requirements of will be released.

Your writing must reflect the Character and Theme requirements – the character requirement doesn’t have to be your main character and the theme can be creatively interpreted, but those who just ignore it will not be voted for.

You will have until Monday 23:59 BST to write and submit.

You will have until Friday Midday BTS to read, vote and most importantly CRITIQUE.

Submit via rentry.co – you can change the url of your submission to your story name to be identified easily.

No word count, but anything over three thousand is most likely going to drag and no one wants to read your novel.

To submit, reply in the thread with your rentry.co url using a tripcode (Namefield: Name + “#” + Password).
ANONS feel free to submit! We will just use the no.# on the reply to identify your story.

Hey guys I have an idea for next month's comp. It's about a boy from an ethnic minority (it doesn't matter which one) who touches a young girl's poontang. Some people got raped and have cancer also.

If you don't like that idea, I have other ideas. How about my latest memoirs from a coffee shop in the last city I visited? I talk about a girl I kinda had a thing for. She was the barista. Riveting stuff!

Btw I am the thread organiser so you better vote for me :) just saying

>They’re like blotches of ink on black paper,
Great metaphor which matches the theme—since you can’t see these blotches, do they mean anything?
>The sound of his shoes on the floorboards is swallowed before it can echo.
Failed stealth check.
>Harry Edward Vickers (3 September 1888 – 9 December 1942) was a cat-burglar who was active in the 1920s and 1930s. He wore flannel over his shoes to muffle his footsteps, which earned him the nickname Flannelfoot.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Edward_Vickers
Attachment is an unrelated excerpt from The New York Times in 1908:
https://www.nytimes.com/1908/11/01/archives/masked-burglars-rob-lawyer-shay-two-hold-family-at-bay-with.html
Imperceptible footfalls not only professionalize your thief/burglar, they also channel the ‘leaving-no-trace’ idea.
>He notices its cord is neatly coiled; must be trying to save on the electric bill, he thinks to himself.
>Then passing by the couch he sees the cushions are untouched; must be a neat freak.
Instead of “must be A…” use “must be ANOTHER…”—indirectly convey the years’ of experience that this thief has under his belt.

>But don’t nobody from here go down there.
Ain’t nothing like a double negative to let us know we’re in Medieval Times:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_negative#Two_or_more_negatives_resolving_to_a_negative
>He was drenched from shoulder to his waist,
Awkward/asymmetric possessive pronoun.
>Holy men had since descended for free samples
I am very impressed by your brilliant period-evocative phrasings, but you wiffed on this one.
“Free samples” is way too corporate an idea for this setting.
Follow the example of “Piers Plowman” and use ‘free tastes’ instead:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_sample#History
>“Really good. I should skive more often.”
You wrote it so that Adrian was “down[ing] tools for lunch” when Ronny offered him the drink, so technically he’s not skiving?

i've only read the first three, but i believe their plots all relate to infinity/the good and the transcendent/the sublime and its absence, but in different ways.

in satantango the villagers are all waiting for some prophet or redeemer, and hope to get off the sinking ship that's their village. they're instead met with a conman. the infinite exists and is desired, but otherwise inaccessible to the general populace. only irimiás manages to grasp it when he sees estike floating through the trees

in the melancholy of resistance, valuska and mr. eszter are fools who try to ascribe some sort of order, or imagine an orderly world (the perfect piano tuning), in contrast to their violent and chaotic reality which illustrates how it is impossible to do so. valuska still perceives beauty in the whale and the solar system, but he is alone and deemed a fool; people no longer believe that the infinite is real

in the manuscript of war & war, the four strangers are constantly fleeing from the decay and violence symbolized by mustermann, which proclaims war and decay as the natural state of human spirit. in this case it is humanity itself which has chosen to destroy and debase the sublime. this is also evidenced in Isaiah has come, the essay at the end of the book

i have not yet read baron wenckheim and don't know enough of the plot to relate it to these themes.

it sounds a bit pretentious, but i think this interpretation tracks well with krasznahorkai's view of beauty:
"Art is humanity’s extraordinary response to the sense of lostness that is our fate. Beauty exists. It lies beyond a boundary where we must constantly halt; we cannot go further to grasp or touch beauty – we can only gaze at it from this boundary and acknowledge that, yes, there is truly something out there in the distance. Beauty is a construction, a complex creation of hope and higher order."
