Are master grades meant to be "easier" builds despite their size? I was watching videos for the big old mg Dom and it looked quite simple. I do like the larger kits but most of the available ones are ones with transformations or clear plastic parts which I just hate dealing with. What are the more simple to build mg models?
>>22900286Not really, they are more intricate but difficulty is a vague concept with gunpla kits since it's all still just following a usually well designed manual.
>>22900286Master Grades are more complex and have more parts, but the only difficulty is following the manual and paying attention to what you're cutting.Do you mean you want simpler looking ones? Suits with less fancy designs?
Reposting from last thread for help:Hi /gpg/. I’m starting a new model painting project on an HG Ball for an easy test and using some new paints, can I get some help? It’ll be my first time shading.Primer: Badger Stynylrez grey (already on the model and test spoons)Preshading: Tamiya acrylic XF flat black that will be thinned with Mr Color leveling thinner. First time pre-shading, how much PSI do I want for a .3mm needle? And how thin do I make the paint/ratio?Base coat on top: Mr. Color lacquer, light gull grey specifically, again thinned with leveling thinner. What would the thinning ratio be since it’s going over top of preshading lines and what PSI should I spray/how many layers? I tried 1:2 paint to thinner (read online) and idk if that was too thin, but it didn’t go on well at 15 psi on the spoons with a first layer and I’m hesitant to waste it before my new bottles come in. May have been too thin and not hit the surface right.Flat coat: Tamiya Flat Clear if that works over Mr color lacquers, already had some bottles sitting around.
>>22900286No, not by a long shot. They're meant to look good out of the box, requiring minimal work and almost no color correcting, but on a pure snapbuild basis they're much more complex than a HG. Of course, HG kits require loads of stickers and paint if you want them to look anything like their animated counterparts.
>>22899894>What's the cutoff year for good HGs?2005
>>22900307You might as well just use lacquers all the way. Why bother wasting Leveling Thinner on shitcrylics when you are already using Mr Color? PSI varies for how thin and the type of paint you're using as well as the needle size. With Gaianotes and Mr Color you can think 1:3 and 1:2 respectively while blasting at 15 PSI.
>>22900303I do prefer the simpler designs. Gimmicks just don't do much for me. If I wanted a transformer I'd buy a transformer. I'd probably be far more into getting Zeta variants if they weren't compromised by needing to be able to turn into their waverider form.
>>22900334HGUC gogg is from 2000
>>22900286clear plastic is usually just meme variants of existing kits, if there's a clear version you can get a non-clear version.unless you mean the clear psychoframe bits on the unicorns and narrative ver.ka, although narrative also comes with a solid grey "deactivated" version of those
>>22900407Yeah, I was mainly meaning unicorn with the plastic bits. I can see the appeal but they're little bitches to avoid getting sprays or pen on or even cleaning up. Give me the base unicorn in all white and I'll be happy but of course you've gotta have your psycoframes.

>>22900477>>22900478Good to hear!>>22900481I followed this guy approach for that particular camo:https://youtube.com/watch?v=QdVONZpKloMOnly difference is that I applied wash after painting base colors to blend camo lines a bit and did drybrushing only at very end.
>>22900489What wash was it? Always have trouble with mine, and yours look like it went on really well.
>>22900493GW Nuln Oil mixed with their Lahmian Medium (probably "just" thinner but I guess it also contains some flow improving stuff in it) 50-50. But to be honest, I could use Vallejo washes (the ones in larger bottles) and it would work just fine too. Thing with washes is that they often ends up pooling and uneven on flat surfaces so you either use pinwash in such cases or, as I did in this case, spread them evenly while they are still flowing and look up if it is not pooling at any location - in such case, use brush as sponge to take away excess and distribute elsewhere. If wash is thinned and still flowing, there is a good chance that it will level itself at that place without much problem. Drybrushing of base color afterward also helps getting rid of tide marks and other fuck-ups.Also, only recently started to get good results with wash over larger surfaces, previously I would get ugly marks all over frequently. So don't worry too much, it's about practice.
chingkod kino just arrived bros$11 shipped from aliexpress
>>22900499That's actually kinda reassuring to hear, in a way. I use these same washes and always just get ugly pooling, so I always thought I had to find enamel washes or whatnot for gunpla's flat surfaces. Thanks a lot for the detail, I'll have to find something to practice spreading them properly.

>>22900536why does bandai sell smaller water slide panels, separately, and for 6 bucks
>>22900542Yeah, the box art just shows the model with a few blue parts but the actual contents have more dupe than non-dupe runnersI wonder what the extra bits would be useful for, maybe some kitbashing.
>>22900509Still insane that they made this PBandai. Completely fucked themselves when they would have easily been flying off the shelves.
>>22900555There hasnt been a retail kit of an MSV in ages, and I think the last time was the HG GM intercept and GM Guard custom. The retail Intercept was missing it's iconic boosters which was made seperate as a pbandai add on. These two probably only made it as retail cause their molds ended up getting reused for more GTO GMs where as the GM Spartan is entirely limited to one design with no variants. It obviously would be a hot item to sell retail based on the cool factor of its design but whoever is in charge of bandai's plamo decisions clearly is some out of touch Jap boomer.

it's unfortunate that 1/144 and 1/100 aren't common scales for model trains to do a combined dioramatrue giga autists could use PGs with 1/64 trains though
>>22900740Honestly 1/144 is the worst. It's really *only* for robots because trains, cars and military vehicles are just way too small at that scale unless you want something that is absurdly tiny, and at that scale those things are way too hard to paint.

>>22900664>>22900667I appreciate how he shows the review kits in multiple different poses. No one else really does that, at least not as well as him. And his voice can be a little hard to listen to sometimes, but it’s not nearly as bad as mecha gaikotsu’s. He’s pretty inoffensive overall though.
>>22900574you want cheap and you didn't specify scale, so why not get a EG RX-78-2? the engineering is actually really good, it's cheap as hell, and it should be available widely as it's pretty recent from 2020? 2021?

Building the RG QANT, unless this thing is gonna turn into shit once it's done I might be an RG convert now. So nice to build and it looks so damn good already.
>>22900348Well, thanks for trying to help, genuinely. I know 1:2 is a fine ratio now at least for the Mr. Color at 15 PSI. I'm using the Stynylrez because it's been easy to apply as a primer so far up to now in my modeling learning and I still have a lot of it, unless for whatever reason the paints above eat into it which is why spoons are being tested. Next project I'll try the Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 I bought but since the model already has the Stynylrez primer there I don't want to strip down. In terms of Tamiya I have used regular non-leveling Mr Color thinner on it before and it performed well but you're right that it's expensive. I'll grab some cheaper Tamiya acrylic thinner for using it as preshading and I can give it the levelling if I ever want to use the other Tamiya colors I have as base paint. Have some still full Tamiya paints and there's no reason to waste them. Will still slowly shift to Mr. Color fully as they finish if Mr. Color gives me results, I only have 2 Mr. Color paints so far.
Are any of the RG expansion kits worth it? They seem ridiculously overpriced for what you get, even on JP stores
>>22900863>expansion setnigga that's a whole ass horse
>>22900863>>22900868Everyone prefers the more articulate horse from Effectwings. An old HG horse that feels more like a brick compared to the ones seen in the SD lines do nothing to people.
>>22900817>I might be an RG convert nowI genuinely don't get why some people are so opposed to RGs. They've consistently been fantastic since 2017. The 00 kits are some of the weaker RGs too.>>22900863Most expansion sets are overpriced for what you get.
>>22900727
>>22900892The only thing i dislike about RG is the roster
>>22900863The ones that are just repackages of old HGs? Probably not.The ones that are actually purpose-designed to expand existing RG kits? Maybe, it really depends on what it is. This thing, for example, cost seventeen bucks on P-Bandai so more than half of that went into the Action Base that you could just buy at any Hobby Lobby (except in a solid color).
>>22900863The only "expansion set" I've considered getting is Goldymarg.
>>22900892>I genuinely don't get why some people are so opposed to RGs.The only thing I don't like about them stylistically is the mismatched colors for panels that were the same color originally. If you're painting then it's obviously not an issue, but I just don't like the look of them unpainted. Also the fucking articulated hands for kits that have those, but that's a given.
>>22900536Keep us posted on the build experience. I've had my finger on the trigger for a while now.>>22900570Thanks for reminding me that we are never getting a reprint of the intercept custom. Also, seeing as they are quite willing to put literal recolors of random buildshit on retail shelves, I don't see why they couldn't have just done what the chinks did and put out naval and arctic warfare variants of the spartan.
>>22900892They're too tiny for me. I also don't like that RGs tend to have way more details than MGs.
>>22900900Actually it's pretty difficult to just buy that particular base, because it's an ancient piece of shit that isn't used.

>>22900937>This makes no sense though. It's a bit hard to explain. As someone who prefers MGs, I don't like having to make the tradeoff between more detail and bigger kit. Of course, you could argue that this is a problem with Master Grades being "less detailed" rather than RGs being "too detailed". Maybe if the RGs came in 1/100 I'd like them more.
>>22900941but if RGs came in 1/100 then they'd just be MGs

>>22900961Haven't built any myself because they're cringe but I hear mixed things about the Astray RGs. Regardless, if you like how it looks then get it anyway. They're very cheap these days and it's not like any of these kits have huge flaws that can't be fixed.

I've never bought a single action base. This is a problem because now I need like 10+ action bases, and I don't wanna spend that money so I just buy more kits which means I need more action bases. >>22900987>I've never bought a single action base. I've come to understand that most of the time when I see negative reviews its usually the result of some kind of fucking moron. Except the RG RX-78 that one does deserve all the shit talking, the build is completely fine but posing it is fucking hell.
there are no bad models (except SEED), only bad modelers
>>22901026and the people who created the models i don't like are bad modelers who made bad models.
>>229010071. There are plenty of bootleg action bases2. You can 3D print them, but it's a horrendous waste of plastic/resin and it might not be as strong as actual molded plastic
>>229010073D printing is not very useful for mass production, it's more for rapid prototyping or custom parts. You want molds for actual large scale production.>Am I meant to believe these things are so complex and powerful you can't just 3D print them?Have you never actually checked? Go nuts and print whatever you can find. The limitation has more to do with how good your 3D printer is, if you want an an action base with a poseable arm, you'll want to have a well-tuned 3D printer so it doesn't come out with poor tolerances resulting in bad joints and wobbly bits. If you just need a static stand then just about nearly any 3D printer will work.Pic related, I printed one a couple months back as a favor for someone.https://www.printables.com/model/321881-xf-action-base
>>22901031Horrendous waste of plastic? That makes no sense. Printing a base with an FDM would be cheap as fuck, and it wouldn't be wasteful unless you mess the print up or end up not using it.
>>22901007The markup on action bases is crazy. They're like 500-800 yen but every store near me or online tries to sell them at £7-10 each before shipping. Next time I'm in Tokyo I'm going to load up on as many that will fit in my suitcase.

>>22900989The parts are too different so they can't recycle anything but the inner frame.
>>22901226I tried the MG a year later because I learned from those mistakes. I can now handle these under gates. And if you want me to use plastic cement on some of them, I will try.
>>22901257RG Amatsus have a lot of very small pieces that go onto places that are very loose and can get knocked off and lost in the void. On top of that, its armor is glossy black. If you're willing to be patient and slow at handling undergated nubs and non-undergated (yep, Bandai for you) parts, and are willing to glue small pieces together so they don't get knocked off just looking at it, then it'll be a decent experience. Be sure to use an action base, the "wings" are way heavier than they appear due to how much area they cover, and it'll cause balance issues. Thicken the appropriate spots of the "spikes" for the shield where they otherwise slide into, so they won't slip out nilly willy. Be prepared to use putty if you fuck up with the armor peg sanding because those marks will glow like a CIA agent in the dead of night compared to the glossy black; luckily it's pretty easy to paint over the putty and regloss it.

>>22900761>also I looked further and apparently UK train autists have a 1:148 scale which they call N scale, the same thing Americans call 1:160This is because America and the UK use different track gauges, with America having a wider track spacing. American trains are comparatively larger in width when put side by side with UK trains (Pic related shows Flying Scotsman with its wheels regauged so it can go on American standard gauge during its US tour), so to accurately depict this using N scale/gauge track that has the rails 9mm apart they scale up the trains for UK N Gauge. Japan has a similar scenario where a lot of their trains are either in 1:160 for the Shinkansens built using Standard Gauge or 1:150 for their Steam/Diesel/Electrics that run on the older track network that uses a narrower gauge.

Hello /gpg/. I would like to announce that I like RGs. I like the DETAILS. I like details so much that I actually scribe even more panel lines because the detail included in the kit is simply not enough for me. I also fucking love weathering. Every time I look at an RG, I can't help but think about destroying bits and pieces of it and drowning it in Earthshade, because weathering is fucking cool. Simply the thought of a clean, undefiled RG makes me froth at the mouth. I mean, where's the realism in that? A space robot just came home from a long and brutal space battle, and you're telling me it doesn't have a spec of rust? You can't have a machine without rust. And paint chipping! The kit ought to have paint chipping everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I even chip my beam sabers because it's realistic and cool. If I could ask for one thing, it's that Bandai include battle damage as part of the kit, it's only realistic. After all, the R in RG stands for REAL.
I'm building a RG I will not weather or scribe.
>>22901873I misread the initial question!>>22901804Both RG Nu and RG Hi-Nu are cool. Go with the design you like best. Nu may give you problems with its funnel wing but you always have the option to display them deployed with an action base.

Sorry. It's me. I'm the reprint guy. I decide the kits you consume. The thing is, people just won't stop buying Unicorns and 78-2s and Zaku IIs. Like really. Just so many. MGs have also got more expensive as they've went up in detail. Before you sperg out at me, blame Bandai for fucking up the other MG lines like RE100 which were supposed to be what older MGs were.

>>22902147100 USD
>>22902152all my kits are on loan from the manufacturer and i only pay them once i've completed it
How feasible is hand painting kits over fucking around with tape and paint guns?
>>22902184it's possible if you're very good or going for a stylised or weathered look, but if you want the smooth clean finish that most people in gunpla are looking for and aren't a skilled painter then it's not going to look good. groupbuilddude has been brush painting for like a decade and it still looks like shit
>>22902169oh I meant in yen
i would pirate gunplaalso paint and all that shit
how do i download paint
>>22902184You'll have to go sponge painting route if you're not willing to spend years mastering art of the brush to the point where brushstrokes cannot be noticed in any lighting
>>22902184Its different approach and usually takes more time and lead to noticably different (not better or worse, just different) final effect but yes, its perfectly doable. I paint all my kits with brush, only spraying (from a can) primer and I think they look good. In the end, its all about how YOU personally think of your work.
>>22902134I can just buy the Titanium Finish one, but I don't want that.
>>22902128NTA, but aside from the CGI box art, the sample Bandai used for the manual book and the other sides of the box, they stated it to be unpainted. Beside /m/, Pinoy infested shit hole, majority of common consumer don't care if a snapfit model is painted or not.
>>22902198Bullshit. Varnish applied at the end (and you need it since with brush you mostly use acrylics and they are not durable enough to endure movable parts) gets rid of any strokes visible against the light.
>>22902184Very, but it's easy to fuck up. Just get a bunch of bootleg or EG kits and start from there.
>>22902184Honestly, the primer is already did all the heavy lifting for you. The rest you need is a small hobby brush and a paint thinner.
>>22902184Very feasible, you just need skill and technique. It's just far easier to use an airbrush and lacquer paint than it is how to learn properly how to use paintbrushes properly to create smooth surfaces with no overpainting or shit texturing.
>>22902206I think shit texturing is guaranteed when you do handbrush. Handbrush is for SOUL/
>>22902210No, I've seen plenty of people do it right and it ends up being nearly indistinguishable to airbrushing, it just takes a shitload of skill to do so when anyone can pick up an airbrush and get the same result instead.
>>22902217>it ends up being nearly indistinguishable to airbrushingI'm not saying hand painting can't be good, there's plenty of looks which you can only get from hand painting, but the nature of how the paint is applied when airbrushing means it's going to be very obvious when a model has been hand painted or airbrushed. For small details yeah it'll be very hard to notice, but for the main body it's completely obvious.
>>22902165I didn't care that much until I actually built mine. The garrison comes with everything chuchu's has minus a quarter of her rifle and a different clear visor part, but also gives the line pretty much any weapon option you could ask for that isn't already covered by the option parts set. It's criminal they didn't at least release another retail option parts set with the bazooka, rifle, and rocket pods (never mind the new shoulder and knee options), but I guess that's hardly the worst decision they've made regarding wfm HGs (Tikabalang, Gundnode, rival upgrade option parts...).
>>22902235I always find Tikbaland to be an easy inclusion to regular Zowort box. The mech is already as barebones as it is, shoving in a thin looking ship won't affect much.
>Do you know what time it is?
>>22902240I think it would make the most sense if it was combined with the Zowort (Heavy) in a PBandai listing (of course, ideally we wouldn't be shoving any significantly new molds there, but that's not the world we live in). I don't think the base jabber equivalent really needed to be prioritized that highly in the hot new AU. I don't mind how barebones the base Zowort is, but it is kinda sad how little the Heavy adds to it.
>>22902267Such a disappointing era of Bandai we are living in. The runners got so optimized, there is no spare head of original Zowort at all.
>>22902266Atleast there is a way to salvage the face if you want to follow Yamane's lineart.
Finished my RG QANT and I think it looks great. Might actually make this my first kit to paint since I'm such a fan, which is funny since I never really liked the QANt before this.Anybody else ever build a kit that changed your entire opinion on a suit?
>>22902198spongebros do you use acrylics or lacquers?
>>22902286Not gunpla but it is probably Revernova from 30MM. I didn't like it at first because it looked like a gritty version of Dom, which is not my most favourited MS to begin with. But after building it for the first time, i got hooked.

>>22902328Ebikawa designed it a few years before he did Demi Trainer. Also, the dome head mech design can be traced back to Starwars.
>>22902327It can be combined with Gardonova. Also, the peg holes are good for customizations, especially if you want to give it more greebles for a gritty military looks. It is a good kit.
What are good suits to use as practice for painting? I've got a half built Gogg sat here that I was initially hoping to use as paint practice but I'm getting second thoughts since it has such strong base colours. I've also got a Demi Trainer, Zaku and rg 78-2 that I could use instead. I have no painting or coating experience at all.
>>22902372All kits. Gunpla is fucking freedom.
>>22902372The 78-2 because the default scheme is incredible boring and deserves to be mixed up.
>>22902372Generally, cheap plentiful HG kits are good for practice. You can practice all sorts of things on them and not worry about "ruining" a kit. Different base coats, color correction, all that sort of thing. And when you're done, you can just disassemble and strip the thing and start all over again.
>>22902372They're all fine. I'd say to play along, take the Zaku and paint it like it's your mobile suit, without worrying about practicality or lore. Are you doing handbrush or airbrush?
>>22902372New First Grade, like papa Gundam or Strike Gundam are both cheap and detailed, good for first practices. However, based on my own experiences with miniatures, you should rather paint what you like instead of picking models "for practice" - you risk burning off, working on something you don't even find interesting.
Does the Acguy reprint is already out or its releasing this month?
>>22902378The Linkin Park Gundam is not a good kit to use as practice for painting.

>>22902278It should be easy to modify the head with some putty. I can see that the armor block on the V-Fin should have been thicker. Honestly it isn't so bad now that I've seen the series, it looks good with some metallic colours.
>>22901806Show me a tank as big as a gundam. Bet it would be smooth. You know it would.
>>22902525Alot of planes have length exceeds what Gundam normally have at height ( 15-24 meters ) and they don't have bunch of inner shits poking out. And yes they are smooth. if you design something that works in hostile enviornment and it is not properly armored, you are wishing for death.
>Actual Real Grade put into deployment>Got 4 billionaires killed
>>22902536Planes are smooth for aerodynamic purposes, but they're still made of individual panels. It's not one giant fiberglass body shell.> they don't have bunch of inner shits poking out.Because they're basically just giant tubes with wings at the sides, and even then the wings and the landing gear have tons of internal wiring/tubing/etc to them.

>>22902448>>22902553Cool. What paints/primers are you using for the kit? Gelgoogs don't get enough love, especially an older variant like the J. It really is odd that the most recent variant in HG was the Char's Gelgoog/Cannon mold from 2006. I hope they make a new one soon.
>>22902720the fact that the Origin line didn't do a normal Gouf was fine, because the Revive had just happened, but not doing a normal Dom and Gelgoog just hurts. instead the line is just 70% (admittedly cool) Zaku II variants, 5% pre-Zaku II Zeon suits and 25% RX-78s and GMsAnd also the only HG versions of the Marine Gundam and Full Armor Gundam, but those are P-Bandai only because why the fuck wouldn't they be
>>22902728The HG Full Armor Gundam needing to be P-Bandai pisses me off zo much, it's mty favorite Gundam. If this were 2010 and not 2020s it would have bee retail, and the audacity to think that it and Marine Gundam wouldn't sell like crazy is absurd.
