Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

Wow, impressive stuff. It's a fascinating exploration of form and movement, encapsulated within a wonderfully minimalist framework. I love your choice of stark, unembellished lines, giving it a raw, almost primitive depiction that echoes the early states of artistic expression. The exaggerated proportions and angular lines convey a real sense of dynamic tension, almost suggestion a narrative of struggle in a moment of stasis.

I really like the simplicity of the construction; it allows for a broad interpretative scope which almost begs the viewer to project their own meaning onto the figure. It almost feels like there's some cubist influence in the abstracted shapes and fragmented forms, which deconstruct the pony into its most basic elements. Ironically, this reduction of detail really amplifies the emotional resonance of the piece, and I feel myself compelled to engage with the fundamental essence of the depicted pony.

This work stands as a testament to the power of minimalism in art, demonstrating how even basic forms can be manipulated to evoke complex emotional and intellectual response.

Just wing it, personally I find clothing from a video game or artwork and try to map it to the pony. front hooves are the sleeves and legs the pants. all pretty simple but you can take creative liberties like giving the front hooves details from the pants since.. 4 legs. I don't have any guides but I really suggest just trying to replicate some outfit to learn

Biggest thing is just make the tip of the muzzle less pointy. At that angle it should be a much softer curve and would not normally angle upward at all, nevermind that sharply. Other than that I would say look at lots of references, especially ones that have a lot of shading and really define the overall shape of the muzzle thoroughly, and try to picture the underlying basic shapes. Imagine the muzzle as a cube or rectangle or sometimes even a cylinder. You can even sketch some construction lines over top of some existing pics to get a feel for it. Pic related. Try to make the base of the shape (the part that's attached to the skull) centered on the vertical line through the head, then make the tip of the shape (the front of the muzzle) a parallel square (note the top right example is actually a bit off from parallel and therefore the muzzle looks a little weird). Then you connect them and start softening/curving edges to make the actual muzzle itself.

I do that to an extent, though usually I break away from whatever lines I make because I realize after the fact that it makes no sense given anatomy or perspective. Very cute! Proportions are a little off, but it's really hard to get that right with more realistically shaped pony legs like this, so even being a "little" off, you did a good job. One big thing I would say is you should pay attention to where you place the hooves that are actually touching the ground. Pic related. Your left foreleg and right hindleg are both perfectly in-line with each other, but the camera is placed a short ways above the ground, so we should be able to see her hindleg is placed a bit further right of her foreleg.

NTA but that's why you practice it, and practice a bunch. Pull up an animation of ponies (official or fanmade, whatever you prefer) and just pause at random times, then sketch out the basic position of that that pony's position: head, torso, limbs, maybe basic facial features if you want. Repeat a few times, then stop and do something else that isn't boring. Do it again in a day or two. Repeat every couple of days, just a few poses each day. In a month you'll be way better at anatomy, poses, and perspective, I guarantee it.

None of this is specifically pony focused, rather it's general technical art stuff, the sort of stuff you'd learn in a formal art school.

Note: Learning this way is hard. Very hard. Just set your expectations on that right away. It will be very time consuming and difficult and tedious and even frustrating at times. You'll think it's beyond you, you'll think you can't possibly do it, you'll want to give up, and you'll think/want these things a lot. But if you fight those feelings and actually stick with it until you actually learn this sort of stuff, you can draw ANYTHING.

That's called the lineart. Some artists (like me) put a lot of effort into very precise clean lineart after they finish sketching. Some artists prefer the messy look of coloring the sketch lines instead. They can both look amazing, depending on skill and style.
Something else for you to consider trying: use a clipping mask to color the lineart / sketch lines. Nothing too bright or obvious, just dark colors that match the "inner" colors they surround. Dark grey for Rarity's coat, dark violet for her mane, etc... usually keep the eyelashes black though. Pic related.

Literally just take a picture with your phone, man. Unless your phone is absolutely ANCIENT then its camera will be plenty good enough. What matters is that you have good lighting and have the camera directly perpendicular to the paper and not too close. Place the art on a neutral background like a mid-white colored blanket or something, and take the photo in direct sunlight when it's mid-morning or mid-afternoon. That way the sun isn't at it's full intensity (which is usually too overpowering and washes stuff out) AND it'll be shining down at an angle, meaning you can position the camera directly above the art without your shadow getting in the way.

Anyone have books/ in depth resources on the process of digital painting? I feel like there is a lot of depth to the subject that I'm not getting from YouTube videos. Painting books would also be fine since I imagine quite a lot of things hold across mediums

>>41164924
Good golly. Really like the way you colored her mane on this
>>
>>41166008
Understand that you are asking a complex question that has multiple answers. Let me attempt to deconstruct.

>resources on the process of digital painting
There is no such thing as "studying digital painting". Digital tools are almost irrelevant for painting, except in the most specialized workflows. This aspect can be studied in "professional" places like entertainment artist communities, i.e. https://www.ctrlpaint.com/ - many more resources in the /ic/ wiki https://sites.google.com/site/ourwici/

>Painting books would also be fine since I imagine quite a lot of things hold across mediums
Learning to paint is learning to paint digitally. A standard painting course will get you, as a hobbyist, extremely far. Some can be pirated at this link, second section https://pastebin.pl/view/456562dd. Another great book is How to Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments From Your Imagination, 2013 Design Studio Press.
However, personally, I don't like theoretical books as much as practice. You can learn much in a short time by just repeating the exercises on this channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPz8Xyt3z-w and also tons of exercises here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxKKAzwXnGM

>rhorse
rhorse makes great paintings but barely uses any digital tools - it's all solid basic painting ability and basic figure/emotion drawing. I would strongly recommend copying many of the drawings of rhorse's /mlp/con horse presentation (https://pony.tube/w/5vCh68Ygng7CGuZYFaWoWb) and possibly even studying their artwork (studying technique = copy the piece with slight modification, i.e. from a different view, with different lighting, etc ...)

>>
>>41173818
I think you went a bit too hard with the sheets and all the fabric and stuff, they seem a bit too detailed/textured and contrast with the mare too much imo
also, what color are you shading with? it looks like you used black or a multiply layer, but I think you'd do better to pick a certain color or tone for your shadows and work with that
it's a little hard to tell where the light is coming from in general, in fact, the direction of the shadows kind of contradict eachother
very pretty mare!

based horny retard. https://files.catbox.moe/2xuans.png
our lighting is generally pretty solid and all points in a unified direction from where the light source seems to be there is only one place where it looks a little wonk I circled it in green and red lined it, assuming my estimate is correct about where the light source is, a shadow being cast directly to the side like that would imply a light source directly parallel to her body more than perpendicular. for wings aim for an egg shape with the portion facing the front of her body being round then slowly tapering in towards her rump either terminating in a round, slightly square, or pointed tip or what ever shape you desire. the pussy is a little big for my tastes but that's not a you problem the fandom has a general tendency of supersizing the genitals of ponies. I like the way you color your eyes btw.

You seem to be shading without thinking about a primary light source. Additionally you need to add a drop shadow under the mare on the bed and you could stand to bring the values of your shadows darker because the picture lacks any real source of contrast.

You have no light rules so it looks flat, you need to learn about planes before you can light things. If you dont use rules like direction of light then you will get a confusing highlight in shadow that wont show up if you were rendering it right.
This scene has light from the window but also some bright lighting somewhere inside. So decide what is the dominant light inside or outside before you do anything else. Then break it down shading one light source at a time on different layers

The filly looks pretty good, you got the proportions more or less correct and remembered to give her a third eyelight.
However your skulls are too tall and sorta boxy in shape. Round = pony = cute. Squares are not (usually) cute.
Start with three circles: head, shoulders, hips. And I mean circles, not ovals. Then you connect stuff, then you add details.

Since you are drawing traditionally instead of digitally and therefore can't use separate layers, you need to practice this rigorously with simple sketches until you can do it with only the faintest of guidelines that won't be visible in the final product. Alternatively you can buy one of those specialty artist pencils that use blue lead which erases much more easily than normal pencils, or use actual pens to do your final lineart so you can erase the penciled sketch lines without fear.

with the way her face is angled her snoot was a little to towards the viewer relative to the position of her head and face, you can move. Id also recommend mirroring your eyelashes with anime inspired eyes eyes it looks better typically and more symmetrical. the jawline is merely a suggestion of what i think would look a little better , just a hint of cheek and a little chin to make the face pop and add some variation to the image.

I had to compress the living shit out of it though to get it to 4chan file sizes though, https://derpibooru.org/images/3369626?q=artist%3AScandiAnon+. I can catbox the og image at its actual file size, 18-20mb, if you so wish when I get home to verify that I'm not lying. I mainly use 4kdpi cause I have a fetish for super crisp clean lines and I find it helps with that without having to rely solely on large canvases.

It is not recommended to leave your butterhorse outdoors for longer than 30 minutes.

dpi (dots per inch) is mainly used for printing. 72ppi (pixels per inch) was used back then because Macintosh screens were designed to work with their printers which had a print resolution of 144dpi.
A monitor's resolution, or ppi, determines how big something will look on that monitor. My monitor has a ppi of 109, which means a square that is 109*109px is exactly 1*1 in. If my monitor were 72ppi, then that same square would be 0.5 inches bigger.
TL;DR dpi doesn't matter unless you're printing, if you want a higher quality picture raise the width and height.

I remember in a previous thread someone posted some online lesson or something about drawing circles, maybe I should look for that. I have been following some of the guides from OP, so after the ATG is over, I should do some practice. I also really need to get a proper sketchbook since I'm having fun drawing, though I don't think I'm confident enough to use a pen yet.
I did take some pictures of the sketch for Lyra this time to show just in case I'm buggering a part of that up. I did tweak the legs a little in the end.

I think it looks absolutely precious. You should totally be confident in your drawings. I see nothing wrong with tracing your drawings with pencil on proper paper as they are.

Hello, /bale/. I finally finished pic related, though it took longer than it honestly should've because I kept getting sidetracked. It's a redraw of something I drew in here a few years ago. I usually never do backgrounds at all so this was nice to finish.

Looks fine just remember you're going for a 2D style and not a rendered form. Here are a few head traces from various artists. You can tell not all of them are going for actual form, which is fine.

Have you missed a single one of these bro? I'm really impressed by your consistency. You should definitely get a sketchbook. Obviously itll be nice not to have the lines, but the texture of sketchbook paper is much different than notebook paper and i think it'll really help with your coloring. Something you can try that ive done before is if you sketch lightly you can draw over it with pen then erase afterwards, it leaves just the pen behind. Just gotta let it dry first so you dont get smears. Also love that look Lyra has got, turned out good bro.

in what way specifically? it does have its own specific challenges but not anything particularly egregious compared to normal canvas sizes, like guesstimating what size brush you want to use to mimic the brushes you usually use at smaller canvas sizes which just takes some fucking around and finding out to fix. most of the challenges will typically come from the program and its limitations or the limits of your hard wear itself. It could also take some getting used to if you have plunger syndrome and typically draw thumbnail sized canvases.

I've surprised myself with keeping up with this, the prompts are 100% helping, without them I honestly wouldn't know what to draw besides a simple mare.
Is there a specific pen I should use or is any old pen fine? might try doing one in pen tomorrow.

The main issue I have is I trend to have an easier time drawing in smaller resolutions just by the nature of those resolutions make it a fair bit easier to connect lines in an easier/cleaner manner than in higher resolutions,
>>
Absolutely based /v/ slavemaster >>>/v/681045349

>>41189622
I see, yeah it is easier to make line work on smaller canvases. you could always make a fuck huge canvas and draw smaller images on it then crop for higher quality while still maintaining the comfort of a small canvas. you can mess around with zooming in just enough to find what size drawing you work best at while maintaining high image quality as well if you do decide to try it. it will also leave you room to work on multiple drawings and or give you enough room for using perspective techniques as well. its up to you ultimately. I am a mouse user so I don't have any real tips or tricks specifically for tablet in terms of improving line work on large canvases. fucking around and drawing doodles on large canvas's can help, just something simple and low effort for getting used to how you need to move the pen is another option though.

Personally I like felt tip but as long as you get one that isn't terrible quality you should be OK. The real cheap ones struggle to have consistent lines in my experience and are just frustrating to use.
