I don't know... I wouldn't try to emulate that -- it kinda sounds like shit, and I'm saying this as a person who loves skramz that sounds like it was recorded in a basement.
I think my issue with the sound is that it seems like layered drum kicks (perhaps programmed layered with a live recording) that are a tiny bit off with the timing that makes it sound like a mess/thick and dirty (but not in a pleasing way).

>TrapGold is the second mixtape by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, who released it as a free digital download on 11 October 2012. American DJ and music producer Diplo and 1st Down of FKi executive produced the project, along with Azalea and Stix serving as co-executive producers. It also features a guest appearance from Juicy J and samples interviews from Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle and Reiner Opoku.

i don't think the fundamental idea is bad but the little swoopy percussion and several parts are rhythmically not contributing to the overall groove.

I avoid this type of music but it technically sounds good! I could be off but the dynamics around 1 minute are jarring. (to me) it gets really muddy there, and then when the highs (mids?) come in it sounds really grating, and then it gets even more challenging (for my ears) with that slide note. It was just that one part of the song though. And I'm an idiot.
>>
>>123106944
voice vibrato/echo effect is too much, shaky like you're about to cry and artificial sounding, you need some delay if it's supposed to be an echo because it takes time for the sound to travel through the air and bounce
isn't this already a song so why don't you use that as the reference track

I think you’re right about maybe too many weird noises at the beginning. This track is dope nonetheless. I kind of like how it is a burst of energy at the beginning and winds down towards the end. The bass and kick coming in at :45 is sick. The hat might be “too harsh” but I like it that way. Good shit

i think you have too many competing ideas, like the horns and vocals dont really seem to go with one another. I think as too separate songs, maybe. Buts its just too much clashing for me. It may be that the vocals just need to be high passed more and scooped at 1k (at least that might help)

>>123110462
I think so, though im not a fan of the low buzzing synth and the last chord you ended on. Feels too "happily ever after" for the vibe you're going for in my opinion

youre absolutely right. it was the one chord i was unsure of because i really was going for melancholy, somber emotions. imma change it what i typed above in the progression in the song 8 bars,1 chord per bar. if anyone has a better suggestion im more than willing to try. the song is in e minor. im thinking the dmaj needs to be taken out

completely disagree with the other anon on this one, I think this track is great until the beat and bass kick in. They ruin the vibes of the track completely. That bass is fucking gross as well. I feel like it would be better if it was a little smoother and deeper with more sustained notes. Complete redo of the percussion would be good, even if you do keep that more abrasive feel, I think they sound out of place. The end is good as well.
>>
>>123111736
>https://vocaroo.com/1bCQbeOwENWS
i don't know what you are thinking with this one, anon. what kind of 'video game music' are you feeling this is, cause that is a very broad term and this is 26 seconds of some synths and a basic beat. Who knows if there's an idea there worth pushing through, it's 26 fucking seconds, try fleshing it out a bit and then come back for some proper feedback when you have something concrete. I think it sounds like a vague mess so far.

maybe it's not powerful for headphones with very high impedance. but even though it sounds 10 times better than your computer you can probably still get better sound from a high end DAC/amp so you get full dynamic range instead of the sound being compressed (peaks not being as loud as they should) and a low noise floor and minimal harmonic distortion

Sounds are crap especially the main synth noises, it's boring, it's aimless, everything sounds stock or dry and overall just sounds like 'my first noodling session'. That was my thoughts listening on speakers. Didn't really change much with headphones on except it kinda hurt my ears and I could make out more of the backing chords - that synth is too fucking harsh, man, and the two parts clash horrendously. I reckon you change the sounds and also give it some structure and proper melody.

9.2 was the version I stopped at. I had a cracked version of that on my old computer I learned on and put thousands of hours in, then when I built a nice new computer I tried one Live 10 crack but it failed to authorize so I managed to find another live 9.2 lol. Shit is just good.
Classic albums, high level shit was made on Live 9 and much older software. The only reason I upgraded is because basically none of the new plug-ins I get would show up in 9.2 :(

It's hard, but it's a learning curve for sure. You cannot just put some tape saturation on a vst and call it a day. Depends however the style of music you are going after.

I recommend watching airwindows guys videos, his console sims like this are golden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju6U2JjZmKI

Some of the stuff he releases is really subtle, but that's kinda the point in my opinion. Especially with older analog devices it was the whole build up of subtle saturation from different parts of the signal chain from the very beginning and even the end product: so the final product might have had quite a massive amount of added analog "imperfections". That's the approach one should approach inside DAW working inside the box: adding it subtly and emulating the whole signal chain: not just adding some tape saturation on top of some polished, compressed and final waveform, but adding it before the compressors, gates etc. with lots of parallel processing
>>
>>123139835
there have been huge improvements in live aside from stock plugins from 9 to 12. I would never want to go back.

>>123130302
I got a 404. I learned the bare minimum to the point if I had samples on there, I could make something. I just fucking suck at picking out parts of songs I like that can be used for sampling. Plus I only really chop up breaks for drums. Using one shots on ableton is easy but my rhythm is ass so I can't do them on the 404. I tried to return it and the store told me that my only options are exchanging it for another 404 or a store gift card. The guy who sold me the insurance said I'd "get my money back on my card." But now that isn't the case.

could i make unauthorized covers/remixes on a dedicated youtube channel so it won't matter too much if the youtube account gets banned, using presets to speed up the work flow, it seems that copyright isn't very aggressively enforced for example there are full albums being made in super mario 64 soundfonts, hardstyle bootlegs etc, it seems that at most they would typically just claim the monetization and not ban your account
>>
>>123152232
I think both are pretty good. Good job
>>
i would save any innovative sound designs for my own original songs, for example ed sheeran's sounds are so tied to those particular songs that it seems wrong to do a straight copy of them, so i would keep the nice sounds to myself, but for knockoffs of other people's songs as just a quick cash grab i could reuse a lot of sounds like for example dubstep tracks could use the same bass growl or hardstyle tracks could use the same supersaw lead synth, like how people use the super mario 64 soundfont over and over

The songs I have been listening to for years sound so clear with flac. It's crazy to me people don't hear the difference. All the noise rock shit I like is way easier to understand

wav

use wav for anything important. mp3 is ok if youre just sending it out for a quick listen
>>
How the hell do i make a track i am proud of putting out there?
>>
>>123161209
you already know the answer
>>
>>123161232
Never eh
>>
>>123161234
you are asking about making a track that (you) are proud of, so it's a personal thing, and if you think that you'll never do it then never it is
>>
>>123161209
most people fail, you need to be a genius like me and set up audiophile/studio grade monitoring before you even have a chance to learn and discern the sound quality between different synths etc
>>
>>123161209
Make a lot of songs eventually you'll make something. I have not put anything out yet
>>
>>123155130
Yeah I agree, I'm not sure if it's because I don't use headphones enough or if I'm just not educated enough on the process or if my ears suck. Every song I worked on yesterday has a similar issue.

>>123152232
>>123150673
thanks that feels too kind

Three more, but similar bass issues I think / or just mixing in general.

The last one is my favorite but I don't like it until the middle of the song. Seems like whatever EQ I have on the lead is getting the harsh stuff eaten in the parts I like, but when it's solo it's just overbearing and loud. I guess I just filter it separately and render it?

the modern equivalent of this is to maximize quality in all aspects like use a modern computer so that you're not restricted in what software synths, project sample rate etc you can use

>>123161119
>>123160977

don't tell me you are using factory made analog electronics on instruments you didn't make yourself anon? Surely you wouldn't take shortcuts like that?
>>
>>123162321
>project breaks
>backups fail
well, I thought this was obvious to anyone producing for at least 1 year since plugins and DAW versions break compatibility so easily, sometimes with simple updates too
I guess only if you work with stock or hardware for you to maintain compatibility for a really long time, and even then sometimes it's not guaranteed

https://voca.ro/1a5PN59G1Jf5 you think this needs vocals? The only vocals i imagine with this is some random background conversation. What did i even make here? Does it fit into any type of genre?

i feel like the kick doesnt match this track at all, everything has this sort of laid back vibe and then the kick is very synthetic and in your face

yeah kinda, i have an electric drum set so it’s not acoustic but i am playing live with sticks and the sound quality is so shit because i put my phone right up against my amplifier

no i have never posted a tutorial here
most tutorials i see are trying to sell preset/sample packs
i have only posted 4 vocaroos since i bought an FL license last year
i wish i had never bought any hardware synths... they were fun to play with but too annoying to record and very wasteful to buy

how do top 40 pop producers get that shiny sleek polished reverb sound on their vocals?

>>123167478
i probably just didn't listen to them. a lot of them sound like ass but >>123110846 was somehow good though i wonder if he actually made it and didn't just paste the stupid jazz part over someone else's track

I have no idea what i'm doing. shit sounds like i'm singing through an old radio.
>>
>>123169591
pro-r preset plus a shit load of room in the arrangement probably

the "shiny sleek" sound you're talking about is probably just them being amazing at mixing, not some secret reverb technique
>>
Hey frens, I posted this a couple of threads ago, worked on the mix since, sounding good?

https://vocaroo.com/18YT1hxQwQqb
>>
>>123169602
I already know what I posted was actually good actually so I just assumed people didn't listen because I would have gotten replies telling me how good it is.

Yes I am being 100% unironic and not joking.
>>
>>123169591
apply the reverb effect

cracking out the sauvignon blanc lads, couple beers in the fridge, smoking some Marlboro reds. no weed at moment don't smoke it too often anyway. what's /prod/ imbibing tonight if at all? :D
>>
>>123169591
3 reverbs with different predelays that blend into each other achieving more closeness while also having a large "stage" like presence and hall.
other tricks aswell.
>>123169611
yes drums kinda muted though. too silent. everything around 1:10+ is clashing heavily, turn down something there. with faders.
>>
>>123169602
haha thanks mate glad u liked it, I did actually produce all the track. I mixed it a bit better too if u wanna hear. drop towards end sounding heavyy

forget what i said the drums are kinda ok, but a little dynamic eq on the highs gives it a nice feel.
>>
>>123170565
Thanks for the feedback. is it good songwriting-wise? I'm gonna add another verse and shorten the chorus and rerecord the vocals and generally make it sound clearer. potential for a label to like it?
>>
What do you do when you're trying to learn something new in music production? (A new sound/genre/technique you're trying to make), but you don't know what the name of that sound/technique is, so you don't know how to research it and you're just stuck. What do you do? Even when you search the artist name or the genre associated with that sound/technique, you get nothing. What do you do? Like I can't get specific, since it's so many sounds and techniques I'm trying to learn (like naming the song and time where it appears) because I want to be taught how to catch a fish.
>>
>>123170678
ask chat gpt 4o
>>
>>123170678
you need help from people that know their shit. maybe you can ask the artists themselves if they aren't big, or get into communities that make the stuff you want to make, those are usually helpful since there are intermediates that still have the time to help noobs
>>
>>123170678
already know this is jpeg homie

You have to build a foundation to understand things to a certain level so you're actually able to inquire and experiment for yourself.
Learn all the basic tools inside and out first.
It *seems* useless because you have no frame of reference to know how the knowledge will later inform itself and how the skills you build feed off one another.

If you *actually* want to learn the real shit there's no way around just getting dirty and experimenting yourself.

Already know this is the peggy dude
>>
>>123170778
I'm aware of the basics of sound design, sampling, structure, rhythm (drums), mixing and stuff like that. I feel like I've actually learned the absolute basics and I can't improve upon them. It's like I don't know whether to remake the tracks (but they have no synths in them to sound design and only samples and noises so what do I do?) or just try to implement the techniques I hear but I can't find anything that gets close to the original sound. So I get stuck over and over.
>>
>>123170624
no idea
>>
>>123170932
How often are you actually trying and failing to get close to what you hear though?
I have been down in the nether trying to recreate shit that only a handful of people can touch and *I get* what it's like being in the dark with that stuff

There's probably a lot you don't have an ear for yet even if you've truly mastered the basics, but either way you need to be breaking things down into components.
I there's something that's truly un-re-creatable for whatever reason you need to be looking past the timbre and recreate what you can in the other dimensions of the sound: rhythm, pitch, whatever effects you can hear and so on.
If it's the sample that's missing then you're still learning the thought process behind the chopping, if you don't know the synthesis method you're still getting the melody/chords so on and so on.

When people (me) harp on about fundamentals it's not always "do you know what X does?" it's *how good* are you at that and how can you apply it actually? Can you recognize it in a very particular circumstance?

...
then there's just the experience
when I listen to like, death grips for example or any of the EDM i'm into i'm consciously picking up "oh they did that thing with grain delay where" or saturator or whatever the fuck.
It's not that i have a magic ear or whatever, it's the fact that i've used those effects in literally thousands of ways in different permutations over the years and i've literally just heard it before enough times that I know it when i hear it.
same shit applies to hearing everything else.
-people not mean *this* when they just regurgitate the advice at you but that is the actual reasoning behind j"ust make music and experiment." It's the only way you get to that point.

the fucking... stupid probably fake ben franklin quote like "i didn't fail a thousand times before inventing the lightbulb, it was an invention with a thousand steps" etc
>>
Does /prod have discord?
>>
>>123171333
I get what you mean, but I've been producing for 9 years and I just haven't improved and that's with trying new things over and over. It's like my brain can't comprehend shit or think for itself. Idk what happened, but I just can't learn any skill past a basic level, my brain just can't compute how to move past beginner level even with practice and learning. I want to end it everytime I get on the DAW, knowing whatever I do ends up being a failure. It's like I was cursed. I don't want to turn this into a pity party, but I'm trying to be as real as possible.

My brain just can't process certain shit

that's amazing how well you've integrated the jazzy part into the track. i'm not sure if the mastering is 100% loud and clear though, try this for a reference track although music.youtube.com plays louder so the difference won't be as much on other streaming services

really good. the only thing that comes to my mind is that his sound is always very eager, brave and quick. yours is very nice, but you could delve a little bit more in the twistedness. like playing with darkness and light a little bit more. just 5% more though.
i get the impression he wants to tell more of a story and you focus more on sounding good. i hope this can help you in someway.
>>
>>123172175
thanks so much, I needed that confidence boost lol sometimes I think I'm a terrible producer haha! yeah I just put it through bandlab mastering to get an idea. I'm sending it off to a proper mastering engineer soon. And nice song choice, Eli Brown is sick!

this was very helpful anon so thank you!!! you're right in that i tend to lean into sounds rather than storytelling but i didn't really pick up on him doing the opposite til you said something. gives me something new to work towards
