Especially with older analog devices it was the whole build up of subtle saturation from different parts of the signal chain from the very beginning and even the end product: so the final product might have had quite a massive amount of added analog "imperfections". That's the approach one should approach inside DAW working inside the box: adding it subtly and emulating the whole signal chain: not just adding some tape saturation on top of some polished, compressed and final waveform, but adding it before the compressors, gates etc. with lots of parallel processing

i would save any innovative sound designs for my own original songs, for example ed sheeran's sounds are so tied to those particular songs that it seems wrong to do a straight copy of them, so i would keep the nice sounds to myself, but for knockoffs of other people's songs as just a quick cash grab i could reuse a lot of sounds like for example dubstep tracks could use the same bass growl or hardstyle tracks could use the same supersaw lead synth, like how people use the super mario 64 soundfont over and over

(A new sound/genre/technique you're trying to make), but you don't know what the name of that sound/technique is, so you don't know how to research it and you're just stuck. What do you do? Even when you search the artist name or the genre associated with that sound/technique, you get nothing. What do you do? Like I can't get specific, since it's so many sounds and techniques I'm trying to learn (like naming the song and time where it appears) because I want to be taught how to catch a fish.
