Finished the fork seals and bushings on the cursed 250. Oil was absolutely disgusting when it came out. It feels a lot better, actually has some suspension action up front now, but I'll be honest, still doesn't feel great. Still really soft. I added thicker washers between the preload spacer and the spring, and I can get back in there to do it again without pulling the forks out.
Is that worth it? Or are these smol bikes just not made for 200lb men?

My dad died. Just inherited his 1966 Bonneville out of my grandma's garage. They want me to restore this thing but dear God, it is in rough shape. It hasn't ran since 1990. I hope the inside is not full of rust because if it is I think it will probably never run again.

I always miss the new thread anyone have any good recommendations for a good long ride in the San Diego area?
Gonna try the glove drying method and usually I just pick a direction and get lost but that hasn't yielded anything good lately, my friend suggested Banner Grade but I wanna hear about some other good rides in the area

Is this the reason there’s so much fucking traffic in the middle of bumfuck nowhere? Some fat faggot semi driver decides to pass another truck he’s going half a mile an hour faster than so it takes him 5 minutes to pass which causes the woman on her phone to slam the brakes and create a domino that causes a 5mph crawl for half an hour??

I was hit by a car on a bicycle once though, not the same thing IMO.

you don't tour on a bike since it's inherently not relaxing. also you have to be a braindead zombie to be able to sit without simulation for long periods of time.

if we exclude few obvious fails during course training, the only time I crashed was webm related, almost December, no lights outside of the city, bridge "bump" onto ice and off I go.

Other than that never crashed but dropped my bike while it was parked once and I once came to my bike laying in the parking spot. To this day I wonder if it was gypsies or strong winds we had in the area at the time, which makes more sense.

Cruising is inherently more fun on a bike than in a car, in the car you’re disconnected from winds and smell, you’re not even outside. The only tradeoff is that you’re gonna want to get up every now and then to let your ass breathe, and to get gas

Put down a budget, find a model you like, look for someone selling second hand, buy one eventually.

The idea of “beginner bikes” is stupid. As long as you’re not some fool that jumps on a liter super sport with 0 experience and throttle to the ground you’ll be fine on any bike, even heavy bikes are easy and nimble as soon as they’re in motion. And even the ones with 100+ HP are safe as long as you have throttle control.
>>

Sport bikes are for "speed demon" larpers. It's nothing but comical to see a man in full riding suit getting cucked by a traffic and speed limits on hot summer day. Try to figure out insurance costs before hand, that's an easy way to go over budget.

Might make more sense to have a vinyl shop cut out a stencil and then you can use that to spray paint the markings on, would probably hold up better than decals stuck onto the leather. You can get paint meant for shoes (Meltonian is the common brand here in the US but idk about other markets) that would work really well for the purpose.

But anon... I'm a nobike looking to learn...
>>
>>27758081
thanks. I did a cursory internet search and some boomers on a german vespa forum recommended cutting a stencil and using spray-on foil (basically rubber paint that you use to coat rims and body parts in)

Bmw just makes good motorcycles. I'd like to try a v4 but this bike is great, certainly capable of more than I am :^)

Yeah I put some PB blaster in the cylinders yesterday and just tried the kick starter slowly, and it spins smoothly to my surprise. Not seized at all. I think with new spark plugs and the rust cleaned out of the gas and oil tanks, it will actually run

Getting my first bike this week, looking at a couple different 80s Honda CB400. I live in PA, so summers aren't that hot. Any helmet recs, I would like a sharp one if I could get it for under 300 and is a mesh jacket okay or should I look at getting a leather jacket?
>>

Don't get a bike from the 80s as your first bike. You want a reliable and trustworthy modern bike to learn on. I am someone who made this mistake AFTER having read this exact advice. I said to myself "that doesn't apply to me because I'm a genius, and I can fix anything, so I can get an old bike." So then I bought a not running 1985 Kawasaki Eliminator for my first bike. And here's the thing, I did get it running just as I predicted. So this advice isn't assuming that you can't handle the mechanical hurdles whatsoever. But what I didn't predict was how long that would take and how annoying it would be. You really don't want a bike from the 80s to be your only bike even if you're not a beginner just because of how often it will be disassembled for repairs, and meanwhile you will want to ride but can't. That is a very frustrating feeling. Please get a used recent year SV650, ninja 400, R3, MT03, or CB500 for your first bike, and get a bike from the 80s as your second bike.

issue is I don't have much more than $1500 overall for everything, and I i'd rather not spend extra money on the bike and skip the protective gear. i have a couple friends who are mechanics so i'm not too worried about getting it up and running but is it that bad?
>>
>>27759098
Well, getting a shitty bike to run well enough to learn on costs money too. Even if your friends will do the mechanic work for free, I assume they won't buy you parts. And with a bike from the 80s you could easily spend 500-1000 bucks on parts just to get it in safe running condition. All new cables, new gaskets, brake pads, a new clutch lever because the one on there is bent, new chain, new tires and tubes, maybe a wheel bearing, maybe a steering head bearing, probably some suspension parts, definitely new fork oil, new needles for the carbs, a new battery and a charger/tender, bottles of degreaser and rust dissolver, random tools you don't already have, etc. And you'll be doing all those hours of work instead of riding on warm Sunday mornings when all you want to do is ride. And when you finally ride you probably won't trust the work because you don't have any context for how a bike should work. Honestly, if you make more than minimum wage, just work a few more hours at your job until you have $3000 to spend on the bike and then you can get something good faster than you'd be able to fix up the 80s bike to a similar condition. At the bare minimum get a bike with EFI and ABS.
>>
>>27759118
yeah i mean fair enough. i prefer the looks of 80's bikes but I get the efi and abs ideas so i'll save up and look at a couple others. any advice on jackets / helmets? I ideally want a sharp but don't really know the reliability of that test vs cost
