I mean flat black or olive plastidip just is peak shitbike, but on sportbikes it just looks cheap so maybe most people just don't want their bikes to look like absolute ass
>>
>>28022496
It looks really good. I've recently painted up my tank, but all the filling, sanding, washing and painting is a lot of dirty work and I don't think I'll be doing it again anytime soon.

That's a wonderful pos. I'd DD that.

How the helm do you avoid to lose the front end when turning on gravel? I keep replaying the slide in my head and don't know what I could have done. I guess if I didn't have a sport bike the front end would have had a lighter load? This really deters me from ever buying an expensive bike.

>>28022506
Yeah it sucked not riding for a week but the end result was worth it.
>>
>>28022519
>>28022523
Okay but then how do I make the turn if I can't brake or lean? I guess by being slower but I didn't know there was gravel ahead. I guess sometimes you just have to accept that it was outside of your control.
>>
>>28022535
You can accept the risk, ride like a champ, have everyone mirin your lack of tendies and silently pray you won't slide into a truck next time or you can ride slower to give yourself more of a margin of error. Your choice.

Also, slippin' and slidin' is way easier to control if you counterlean, but that's mostly for the rear wheel. If your front slips, that's it.
>>
>>28022532
>not riding for a week
That's what you get for putting actual effort into it, I think I was done basically the same day I started
>>
>>28022546
You can save the front but it only comes after a lot of practice riding dirt and washing the front out. I can't fully articulate WHAT you do with the bars, but it is very possible.
>>28022535
It's the street. Leave some skill in reserve.
>>
>>28022532
>>28022547
I've had my tank off for nearly two months now. First I was just trying to push out a dent, but then I just kept finding more work for myself.
>>
>>28022546
I was going 20-30 and lost the front. I go to track days when I want to ride a bit harder. That's what I find annoying about this slide, I think I would have preferred if it happened because I rode beyond my ability.
>>
Are there any archival websites that have high res images of original advertising posters and manuals? Struggling to find how my particular flavour of ancient shitbike should be looking
>>
>>28022551
>You can save the front but it only comes after a lot of practice riding dirt and washing the front out. I can't fully articulate WHAT you do with the bars, but it is very possible.
I'd like to see video of that if you ever happen to catch it on film. In my limited experience, mostly riding on snowy / icy roads, as soon as you lose the grip and you lose that straightening torque, it's like dropping the bike at a standstill. I don't really see myself coming out of something like that.

They absolutely are. They enable the uncoordinated with no balance required, are way tippier/bouncier off-road, require much more body English to properly control, and weigh much more and can really, really fuck you up even on something as simple as a hill climb.

Nah. The new euro5+ engine feels dead. The loudest part of the ride is the valve rattle. This was the factory akrapovic.
Learn to shift
The LOWDOWN TORQUE doesn't exist and it feels like a 4 with a rev limiter set too low so you never get in the power
>>
>>28022659
Nc750 is that and has DCT. Still, you have no business being on a >250cc bike if you can't shift.
>>
>>28022661
>learn to shift
I'd wish, but I think you don't understand how incompetent with manual transmissions I am.
>>
>>28022667
Motorcycles have the easiest possible transmissions to operate. They're sequentials and the clutch is operated by the most dexterous part of your body.
>>
>>28022667
Buy a convertible car then. I don't think bikes are for you.
>>
>>28022670
I can operate them fine, the problem is not stalling the engine at every stop, which has led to an accident already with my father's old Peugeot 307.

I was thinking WD-40 with a microfiber to help exfoliate the rubber but I’m wondering what that will do with the paint

IIRC the R and RS have different setups than the GS or RT
>>
>>28022682
Because it's German there's probably 1000 tiny imperceptible changes everywhere. The big difference is the final drive ratio, which doesn't change the excitement factor.

The alternator for some fucking reason stopped working completely as I went to the nearby bike shop to buy new riding goggles. Worked fine all the way there, entered the shop and as I got back, it just magically didn't work as I started the bike.
Thankfully it takes barely fuck and any voltage or amps to drive the contactless ignition, battery went from about 12.8 to 12.6V during my 100km return trip.

after a year of having my cb500 I was thinking it was slow, after 2 years I realise that now I'm now a lot faster than many riders on much bigger bikes
now I don't feel like I need to upgrade just yet, so I'm going to give it another year. I don't think I'd have realised this if I started on my dream bike

cars are dry clutch, (most) bikes are wet clutch. they're a lot more forgiving in every way.

belts imploded on the ‘07 monster S4rS late last night.

Pulley bearings are fine and belt was last replaced 16 months ago @ 6k miles. Without breaking it down mechanic said crank feels fine, but thinks the issue stemmed from something wonky internally. Feels intake/exhaust valves took a hit on both heads.

1)replace both heads ~2k, but underlying issue may not be discovered or resolved, and once labor goes into replacing heads more costly problems could arise leading to
2)replace motor at 2-3k. So long as sourced motor is gtg the underlying problem goes away.
3) Or sell bike as-is, or try to part it out

Thoughts?

Why didn't you replace the belt sooner?

That's rough. In my experience, if the mechanic thinks there's an underlying issue that may present itself again later, heed that warning. Did he elaborate on that more? Like a crankshaft imbalance or something?

They are the perfect bike, undeniably. I'm still keep my 6r for track and twisties because for me personally it's better. The bike overall is a little bigger and I can leverage my body against the tank better. Plus, it's more forgiving if you throttle it too much mid corner. The 750 is an amazing bike though. I'm in love with it. I could set it up for track easily, too.

Oh interesting, I thought belts were done every desmo service. My local Ducati dealer told me belts are also due every 2 years (lol, lmao). Didn't look that up, but FUCK Ducati on that. If I'm riding my 999, every now and then I inspect the belts to see how they're doing just because timing belts terrify me on principle.

I would definitely heed his advice and not try to fix that motor, he's trying to save you money and headache it sounds like.
You're in a tough spot, it sucks. You probably won't get much for it, unless you part it out. Really it comes down to, do you love this bike and want to keep it or would you be happier with a different bike? You're going to be out a lot of money either, but you want to be happy after that pain is over. Don't take one path or the other because you feel like you have to, they're both expensive options.

speedo cable rotates, spins a magnet that induces a current that pushes needle against a spring

Im guessing the larger of the gears in pic rel (the one that rotates when the wheel spins) has worn out

Im still trying to fix my original front hub that is suffering from the same issues ( i cannot figure out any way to remove the smaller worm gear with out mass destruction) I have scene videos of pajeets hammering it out with a screwdriver and some patience so it must be workable somehow

Also if anyone can point me in the right direction for a FRONT brake hub for a NXR125 i would be so happy
Its a XR125 poor fag edition so they done away with the front disc and electric start, this apparently makes it "more rugged" for the Brazilian streets but it also means i cannot find any fucking parts for it here in the UK

Pic rel, the worm gear that doesnt want to come out

nice, get the doughnuts, get her (his) number, get her (him) shagged

Yes, a LOT of play in it and it will not spin freely in any direction, you really have to force it to spin at all , which is what i think killed the last speedo cable

hmm interesting. Maybe blast the wrom gear with lubricant? On my Transalp the drive housing for the speedometer is not integrated into the hub and can be removed (and replaced) by itself. Can't offer any more advise then.

Thanks anon it would be nice to just replace the speedo gear entirely but its integrated into the brake hub

This has been my current janky set up for the past few months, its a CG125 hub which fits fine although as you can see its not secured to the forks (it will spin the entire hub if you hold the brake and reverse), every single hub i can find is set up the same as the CG hub (lever facing down and pulling towards the bike) where my brake lever faces up and pulls up the way (sorry if this doesnt make any sense)

If the hub is an original Honda part then you need to have a manufacturing number/frame code/exact type code of your baiku and contact your local Honda supplier to get a new part.

If I go for swapping the motor with an exact year model match this is something I should be capable of figuring out, right?

There are one two types of motorcyclists. Ones who have been in a crash and ones who will be in a crash; and they all deserve it.

The way to treat visually complex systems is remember you do one task at a time and choose not to hurry. I advise doing what seems difficult because once mastered it becomes easy and you become a better mechanic in general. Time marches on and one day you just know you're good.

Many years later when your mentors are dead, you inherit their spot enlightening others. Just do it (and be glad you're not wrenching modern automobiles).

You can determine bent valves by failure to seat by rotating each cylinder to TDC and doing a leakdown test (or just cram a rubber-tipped blow gun into the plug hole and listen for leaks at intake, exhaust, and crankcase (pulling oil plug etc). I prefer the leakdown test as guages are cheap and they'll run off a small compressor.

I would not commit to replacing heads until I removed them for inspection. Since you currently have a broken engine there is no harm in using the factory service manual (you may find one for download with some looking) to dissect it. I quite like cheap Harbor Freight car engine stands and mod them (crude is totally fine) to hold any bike engine I work on. Even if you buy the sheet steel bench stands those are easy to mount to the cheapo engine stand head and the convenience is fucking wonderful.

Valves/seals/guides and a valve job should be much cheaper than a head swap. You can do a spreadsheet at no cost. Include a complete gasket and seal kit of course.

You can use pistons with minor dings from valve strikes (piston engines are pleasantly crude) and bore inspection with heads off is easy. Your spark plugs will tell much but with such low miles the pistons and rings are likely fine. If in doubt lift the jugs and inspect the con rods and bottom end. Even if you install another engine you'll have useful experience and another to build into a go-fasty if desired.

Underlying issues are generally easy to determine. The belt failed either due to being a belt (I despise timing belts but like them for final drive) or because something locked up briefly and shock loaded it like valves playing tag. Most of the internals on other engines are on the outside (timing parts) and with the engine out you can inspect everything else directly without splitting the cases. I would drain any residual oil into a clean white etc pan and inspect the oil filter for chips.

Too bad I'm not nearby as I'm retired and while I hate the general public I've trained many bros for fun. Get on some Duck fora and get specific parts recommendations as that can save money and avoid suffering. Except for the engine stand (always worth owning and you can copy the drilled holes on the sheet metal stand on some scrap if want rather than overpaying for a pretty one) you won't be out much if you opt to replace, and if you part it out you're ahead on that.

It might be that the partout of your hurt engine makes a decent dent in replacement cost. I would also look at used engines with cosmetic damage like scuffed or cracked covers. Motorcycle salvages which are any good can check with other salvages just like the car guys do.

Consider a front end swap to get a disc then use a GPS bicycle speedometer if that too has speedo drive problems.

What do Honda mechanics say on Honda groups/fora? Does the service manual show anything useful? You can likely find an exploded parts view online to help suss out the removal.
