Does anyone have experience with the DL1000 here? There's one in my area for about $7k for a 2017 DL1000 XT with about 6000 miles on it, and one for $8k for a 2018 DL1000 XT with 1100 miles.

I have an SV650 that I basically converted into a sport tourer with bags and a windscreen, I want to upgrade to a bigger engine for highway and get some light off road capability for motocamping. Any other ADV recs I should be looking at? Gonna buy used, stealerships are scams.

Riding off road for sure. You don't need to be hitting a motocross track, just standing up and keeping the bike under control on uneven terrain is a good workout. Also lugging the bike around if you get yourself into a tricky spot.

The high fender really changes the look but I prefer the wheel mounted fender more.
The only time I could see the high fender being functionally better than the stock one is if you are going through a lot of mud and where the stock fender can get clogged up.

I owned an MT07. Loved everything but the suspension, as anyone who has owned it will tell you. Aside from that, there was this irritating thing with the fuel gauge where it would show lower than it actually is, which was really annoying for touring. Dont know if thats the case with the new ones, but if they fixed it I think I'd get a new one again to daily.
>>
>>28040786
The fuel gauge is really conservative. "E" is almost 1 gallon of fuel left in the tank.
>>
>>28040468
Core exercises make the biggest difference for whether or not you feel in good riding shape. Do crunches, back extensions, and twists with a plate to keep your trunk strong. You need it to stay in riding position for a long time without fatigue.
>>
>>28040787
yeah eventually I just did it by mileage instead of the fuel gauge since i mostly just commuted with it. For a naked it got surprisingly good mpg, around mid 50s for just commuting. Worst I got was maybe low 40s on the twisties, but ngl I was always afraid of wheelies coming out of the corners

>>
>>28040804
I have never had my XSR700 wheelie out of corners but I weigh like 190, probably 200+ with gear. If you're a smaller/lighter rider *maybe* it could but the bike is really not a monster, especially with the stock gearing. Most I've ever had it do without trying is lightly lifting the front on an aggressive launch.
>>
>>28040556
He right tho
>>
>>28040622
The new one obviously. It'll be more reliable and predictable for you to learn on. Old bikes require maintenance and repair, and if you're not accustomed to riding and don't know what a bike should feel like, you'll have a hard time with that. You also will come to resent any bike that isn't in working order at particular moments when you want to ride. You should never have a bike older than 10 years as your only bike. 80s bikes are for second bikes.

Buy a 2015+ TU250 or CB300 or something and have that be your around town bike and learner bike. Then in a year get a 80s VFR to be the soulful sport tourer that rounds out your collection.

Sup I'm VFR anon, I have history with 250cc 2 stroke dirt bikes so 125s too small for me.
6' 195lb n fit

This would be a bike I plan to own for a while (fuck it im cheap okay?) I think I will NOT go for an 80s VFR solely due to part sourcing even if it might be a more attractive first bike visually and cc wise.

4-6th gen VFRs seem like great options, 6th gens may be a 800cc bike but the vtec keeps the low end fairly tame from what I've read. I'm a very respectful rider with no plans to stunt or hoon, I would like either a VFR or a crusier for what I want in a bike.

VFRs are super cheap by me so I can consistently find 90s-00's ones for less than 3k. Despite being 800cc id imagine it's a great bike to grow into and the weight keeps me planted with a more upright seating position on top.

>>28040894
Cruisers SUCK. You have no idea how much they suck. The posture is weird, the engines have lower redline than some trucks, they're turbo pigfat, and even the kickstands are weird. I test rode some Harleys and beemers and settled on my R1250RS. 6th gen VFR is an awesome bike. The engine is insanely fun at high revs and super smooth at low revs. None of these options are good starter bikes but once you're ready for a biggun the VFR is great.

Yes.. I have a 97 VFR (carbed) and I do do long distance tours on it. Last weekend I went to Shenandoah which was a 12 hour round trip that did include going up a mountain. When I got it I rebuilt the whole front end, the brakes, the carbs, the clutch, got a new shock too, and it's like a new bike for under $5500 all in. I trust it to go another 50k miles with absolutely no problem.

Carburetors are not as finicky or unreliable as people think. They get gummed up if you let them sit with gas in them for too long, but other than that they are really bulletproof. You need to go really high up to get them to start running poorly from altitude.

I wouldn't recommend doing what I did, you'll easily more than double your initial investment in a bike that will physically punish you for any mistake.

It's so much fun when it works, but I've pretty much destroyed the OEM forks at this point.

I'm working with an Italian company to get a set of triples made for it so I can mount some A-kit 49mm SHOWA spring forks I have waiting in the corner...

>FCR39 is more picky

Fuck FCRs - everybody in the DRZ community jerks off over them because 'oh the kickstart and E models have it oem' and turn a blind eye to any other better options.

They're an over priced, over hyped, over engineered, overly complicated finnicky cunt of a carburetor.

They're so prolific because there was nothing better at the time.

They're a bitch to tune when they're new, let alone when they're worn or dirty.

SO many wear parts and failure points that can cause similar or overlapping issues, slides, bodies, vacuum plates, leak jets - they've got a fucking vacuum operated pinewood derby car for a slide.

If you ever come across an FCR, be it a Slant or an MX - replace it with a Mikuni TM40, take the FCR and sell it to an idiot on a DRZ group for ~$600+

Does everything an FCR does without the complication, expense or wear parts.

My dad and I liked mikunis when we used them on karts, I will write this down and consider the switch if/when it gives me more problems.

Fellow new xt250 owner here.
i think you need to investigate the wheel balancing. Mine is new with about 150 miles on it, and I do not have instability at 65-72 mph, and I was riding today. It was actually very stable with me wearing draggy Motocross gear + moto helmet.

I was thinking of making it an adventure build and going on long cruises because it was so stable in the 65 mph range with only half throttle in fifth

Remove the bolts holding the caliper mount which should permit removing the caliper and mount as an asssembly.

Then since such parts can be awkward to hold I'd run a couple bolts through the mount holes to clamp in my bench vise or bolt the mount to a hunk of scrap (I drill holes in hunks of angle for that sort of thing) you can clamp or bolt.

Then I would use a cheap transfer punch set or grind a point on your broken bolt to use it as a center punch and use the caliper to keep the punch stable. I would drill out the broken nub then try a screw extractor but if you don't have a drill press you can take the assembly to your local machine shop to have the broken piece removed . If that damages any threads a barrel style threaded insert (Time-sert etc) can be installed by the machine shop vs you buying the kit. (Me being me I buy the kit but I've far more vehicles to wrench etc.)

Adding onto this because I'm looking at my bike: My tires are complete stock from the factory. The bridgestone tw-301/302 45P/62P Dual Sport tires. Now, I curse them when I go through powder sand since they are no where near knobby enough to do it competently, but I'm certain that's the reason I'm able to stay stable at 70 mph on the road. If you put knobbier tires on, it could be creating your problems.

You could do what I've seen others do in the short time I've been Riding and carry two different tires, learn to change them yourself, and swap them out when you get to where you need the knobs.

If you haven't already - aim the AP nozzle squirt so it directly hits one of the intake valves - the throttle response is indescribable.

It's a bitch to do on any bike and usually it entails removing the subframe and airbox so you can get your eyeball right in line with the intake tract - but it's worth it.

I can put power down to loft the front, plant the rear or do both instantly on my DRZ.

Also, ignore anybody who says try and hit the needle with the stream - they're retards parroting harley fuddlore from a bygone era.

Also - if you're gonna get a tm40 check MikuniOz first - they have kits put together for a bunch of make/models that include the correct jets, nozzles, needle, cables and throttle. I wish I'd known about them and the kit they had for the DRZ400 sooner - I bought all my TM40 stuff for piece meal from niche cycle supply and was guessing at jets and needles until I got it right by trial and error when I could've just bought their kit and been done with it.

This sounds like the most retarded setup in existence. Carry a small compressor that can plug into a trickle charger style plug on your bike. Air up for pavement, air down for off-road, K.I.S.S.
>>
>>28041109
The bike needs it, if craves the violence
and if it's up to operating temp then it also doesn't mind, the limiter is there to limit your actions before damage occurs. Of course if you bounce it off the limiter for minutes on end then maybe, but just a few times won't hurt it.
>>
>>28041111
Here's the thing, I'm 5'6" and the bike fits me perfectly. The Serow is the perfect manlet/Japanese average sized man Bike.

I think if I were a bit taller I'd like a more powerful DRZ400 or a water-cooled 300L. Or maybe a sixth gear KLX230/250. I even had a little buyers remorse for not heavily considering my alternatives when I bought the xt250, but I've gotten over it because it would be tough for someone of my height to learn on a DRZ400 when I can't flat-foot it without practically dismounting the bike.

Other than that if you're fine with the cramped lower-seat profile bike, yeah I recommend the XT all the way. Fantastic bike for me so far.

Subframe has to come off anyway to do anything meaningful to the carb, 5v era YZ450 and I put a thumb-twist mixture screw on it so no easy poking around in the float bowl without losing the little washer and spring. Just by eyeball I think the AP nozzle has already been aimed/it doesn't matter because 3 intake valves. Squirts approximately right towards them. Thanks again for info.
>>
>>28041116
Yeah the person who was doing it was riding a WR450 Enduro and those stock tires are not made for pavement. So he bought some I think traditional road tires for the times he had to commute to the park (The bike isn't road legal but he doesn't give a shit and neither do any of the cops around here aparently) and the stock knobs for it. He just threw an air compressor in in backpack.
>>
>>28040638

That's not a big deal at all - take the caliper off the bracket, then take the brake off the forks.

Looks like it broke without being cross threaded and the threads are clean.

There's a high chance the broken piece has no tension on it and will simply spin out by hand with a pick.

If you're not comfortable doing that - take the bracket and broken bolt head to a local shop, show them both and ask if they can extract it for you.

Protip - if you're ever going to do sprockets - loosen the NUT on the back side, don't ever try turning the recessed socket cap screw - simply hold them in place with an allen key while you tighten/loosen the nut.

After the Freeway and the Fusion, Honda released a third scooter with a name beginning with "F" : the Foresight. Honda concluded that an even more powerful machine was needed to beat rival Yamaha's Majesty. That bike was the fourth "F" : the Forza.

Honda took the Foresight frame, stretched it out, added a 13-inch rim to the front, and installed twin shocks in the rear. Power was boosted with only minimal tweaks to the engine, but a major drivetrain change was the Hyper Belt Conversion system, for more linear response.

As typified by the twin round tail lights, the Forza's exterior design resembles an updated version of the NSR250, whose sporty image made it hugely popular in the heydays of the "racer replica" in Japan. This sportiness is also evident in the instrument panel with its round, overlapping gauges—a first for a scooter in Japan. The combined braking system ensures more reliable braking.

Added to the lineup in 2002 was the high-tech Forza S, the first scooter in its class equipped with antilock brakes and an idle-stop system, which improves fuel efficiency and rider comfort by automatically turning off the engine when stopping at a red light. When the light turns green and the rider opens the throttle, the engine automatically restarts to get the bike on its way without delay.

as with all bikes that are out of production fairings are all going to come from parts bikes
I can still find OEM odds and ends for my VF, but plastics are basically “get lucky”

Don't bother - you'll spend an arm and a dick in time and money only to end up destroying them anyway.

Buy it, strip it, run it as a rat bike until you're done with it and put the plastics back on when you go to sell it.

still collecting parts for my 1977 GL1000 Goldwing, i have a radiator coming but im not sure where to get a thermostat, since mines all seized up and the cheapest one ive found is $75 which i think is unreasonable.

Also i need just the gaskets for the timing covers and the bolt hardware to attach them but i cant find them either. Im located in Australia if that helps

Thermostat isn't needed - cut the center out of the thermostat so all you're left with is effectively just a baffle with a gasket around it and send it.
>>
>>28041214
thats what im leaning towards to be honest for affordability's sake, and i atleast have the old thermostat to cut the centre out to use it as essentially a restrictor. I believe a working thermostat is required for a motor to properly regulate its temperature but im not sure, maybe the new radiator will compensate for a gutted thermostat.

Also i bought a tail light lens assembly from Wemoto as an OEM replacement for my smashed original but when it arrived it was like scaled 25 percent smaller than the original and i had to drill new holes in it to make it fit and add my own ground strap to the bulb. I wanted to buy new indicators from Wemoto too but after this i dont want to anymore. Its almost like they sold me a CB125 tail light when i wanted a big goofy original brake light, as in, its the same style but scaled down and i dont trust that when they advertise OEM replacement indicator lights for a GL1000 that they actually are for my bike

It's there to restrict flow through the radiator to bring the coolant up to temp faster - not having a thermostat isn't an issue unless the bike is operating constantly in cold climates

Looking to get a vstrom 650 as my second bike after a 250 cruiser (fell for the starting small meme). I liked the vtwin experience though. and from what I read the sv/vstrom engine can last a long time. On the used market I see a few within a couple hours from me -
'04 with givi back and side cases, heated grips and corbin seat. New rear tire. 40k miles / $2200
'14 crash bars, bash plate, rear case only, heated grips. 15k miles / $4000.

Which one bros? Is the extra decade worth the 2k?

>Dirt-track racing became popular in North America in the 1960's and even produced such world-class grand prix riders as Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson. In 1986, Honda released in Japan a 250-cc-class bike that faithfully recreated the dirt racers of that era, the FTR250.

In 2001 Honda built an updated FTR in response to the renewed popularity in Japan of dirt-track motorsports. This FTR combined the XR200's semi-double-cradle frame with the SL230's engine. The 19-inch front wheel size was reduced to 18 inches, matching the rear wheel, but other than that, the new FTR was identical in appearance to its 1986 predecessor in nearly every way, including the fuel tank and side covers that resembled number plates. Flashy with its white, red, and blue tricolour paint job, this bike could tear up a dirt track and turn heads on the street.

>The air-cooled, four-stroke, overhead-cam 223-cc single-cylinder engine was designed for flexible power properties for dirt-track and street driving. Dirt racing-proven Dunlop K180 tyres were mounted in the front and rear. The front rim was aluminium for its light weight, while the rear rim was made of steel for better lateral stability. The ultra-wide 32-inch handlebars topped off the bike's authentic feel. To allow buyers greater room for personalisation, Honda offered the FTR in seventy different colour combinations. For the 2003 model year, the tricolour model was joined by variations with more of an urban look in the handlebars, instruments, headlights, mirrors, and side covers.

The FTR has to be ridden to appreciate its true uniqueness—the low, slim seat, tenacious power that's evident even when the bike is idling, and speed combined with exceptional handling. The FTR is a unique bike with both performance for the dirt track and ease of handling and pure fun on the street.

I don’t like the way hard saddlebags look, they affect my ability to lane split, and the oem ones are megabucks. Soft saddlebags aren’t lockable so I would have to empty them whenever I stopped anywhere

Honestly I got this thing because I can treat it like the trunk of a car, it makes the bike so much more usable and therefore gets me to use the bike more. I don’t think it looks too bad

Keep in mind that side case *mounts* add zero width to the bike, and all the good sideboxes for sport tourers are quick detach, so only put them on when you need to. VFR lanesplitting/filtering is in fact very fun.

It's a V4 sport tourer. Those are extinct in the wild due to emissions bullshit (unless you count a Tuono V4 with bags and a taller windscreen, which is reeeeally stretching it) but they're super fun, and so people will keep buying VFRs.
