It runs when you rev it, but it has a habit of stalling with the clutch pulled all the way in, in first gear. Doesn't happen every time, but happens enough to be a problem. Startup seems much rougher after this happens, too.

Definitely learn your clutch positions. do slow speed turns and very light flicks of the bike to do low-speed wobbles
as someone else suggested: practice also starting from a stop in different gears. My bike can start from a stop all the way up to third gear without stalling. Make sure you can do the same because you may not always be in first gear.

my Yamaha 250 runs bad after being out in the rain or after i wash it w/ garden hose. it will run on one cylinder, hard starting, need to change oil. This is even after i spray the coils & spark plug wires w/ silicon spray.

had to open oil cap to air it out & let fuel fumes escape, only then will engine fire up, but my pants leg got sprayed w/ oil. may need to change the oil again.
>>
>>28073309
What about the air box, what does it look like after you spray it?
From experience with my XT250, spraying the bike with water and then having it run like shit is an airbox problem because the water will restrict air through the spongey filter. Of course, 'Yamaha 250' doesn't narrow things down for us very much, so I'm just guessing it's a YZ250 or an XT250.

its gotta be a real sketchy ad on craigslist. bike is in the back of a shitty garage full of other harleys. if it aint leaking oil, tranny, and primary fluid, pass it up. means its empty. the gas smell is a good thing. if the vaccum petcock has rotted and it drips gas on the primary, dont worry it will just boil off when the bike heats up. remember, if it starts easy, buddy probably hasnt rode it in a while. if it chokes on start, he's been riding it and its good 2 go. pay way more than its worth and load it on the uhaul motorccle trailer behind a 20 year old ford explorer. if its been sitting one day you goltta turn the fuel on and twist the trottle 3 times and then give it a half twist as you crank it over. fire right up. if its been 2-5 days, 4 twists and 1/4 throttle as you crank it. Over 5 days setting you jsut gotta keep turning it over and twisting the throttle open and closed until she catches. expect a black smoke cloud. remember you have to top the oil up each ride. she blows oil out the breather. keep the oil at the lowest position on the disptcik otherwise its gonna blow oil out the breather even worse. expect to spend at least the amount you paid for the bike on repairs the first year. after that, budget about $200 a month for repairs. not including oils and tires. gooluck and gobbless

NTA but I wanna take advantage of your Hog autism to ask, what is the best Harley for me if I want a bike that is (relatively) not too heavy or fat but will still allow me to cruise interstates?
>>
>>28073639
Why would a water cooled bike be less reliable than an air cooled bike? I feel like the exact opposite would be true because you're less likely to have hot spots and uneven wear.

But either way, are any of us actually riding enough that reliability even matters? All it really affects is availability (i.e. how many days per year you can ride) and lifecycle costs.
>>
>>28073639
The Road King Special is just ridiculously huge though. The last thing I sat in that was that big and wasn't a car had a mast and sails. I think it's almost twice as big as the R1250RS I ended up going with.
(yes I cross shopped a Harley and a sport tourer, I expected much more Harley like handling from a Boxer bike)
>>
>>28073646
Yeah reliabilty matters a fucking LOT once you start touring 2+ days at a time. If you're never more than half a day from home on two wheels then it's not a real issue.
>>

>>28073646
>are any of us actually ridimg enough that reliability even matters
Sometimea reliabiltynis calculates by how many times you drop your bike and it still turns over
Also
You talk like you dont know what youre talking about and presume to know as much
Aircool reliabilitybis as simple as fewer things to go wrong, less parts etc
If you need to be schooled, there are plenty of examples of both air and liquid overheats
One involvea youre fucjed because lol radiator
The other involves patience and lwtting it cool

If you want the best bang for you buck, I would get a twin cam softail heritage, either carb’s or fuel injected, doesn’t matter. I would strip it down and take off all the boomer shit until it looked like a softail standard, and I would ride that around locally. When i wanted to go state to state, I would put the bags and windshield back on. Of course I would plan on customizing it to fit me as soon as I got it. New bars, seat, whatever. That would be a baller way to get into a big twin Harley for less than $4500.

Nu Harley’s are made in China and assembled in America. You’re better off getting a bike that’s 10+ years old lol

Keys can be hammer bumped open
Combi can be cracked if the theif is patient

Also, if you’ve got it directly below your window you can put one of those disc locks on it that has an alarm. It’ll definitely go off if someone fucks with it, and sometimes it’ll go off on its own lol

I would get some lag bolts and bolt a heavy duty hook into the pavement, then chain my bike up to that, plus the alarm disc lock, and AirPod so I could murder them if they did get away with it

So, picked up a bike that needs some pretty heavy work. Tank was...epoxied? together, and is in the process of coming apart. Gonna take it apart and check for rust at some point, just to make sure welding some new steel onto it is worth the trouble, but in the meantime, what is the best epoxy to reseal the tank? Just temporarily, unfortunately I don't have a way to drag the bike places so it has to get around on its own.

The best guard against theft is insurance. That, and having a really shitty bike that isn't worth stealing.
I had a GPX250 stolen from out front of my house that had a chain, steering lock, and disc lock all on it because it was at 3am and I was asleep. I was absolutely gutted, but insurance paid me out 2x what I paid for it kekekekekek.

I find it amusing that a 1650g full face is considered light but then my modular Caberg Levo X is 100g lighter. I don't have much to compare it with in terms of noise but it's a lot quieter than the Caberg Duke I had before it, but then that could have just been a really noisy helmet. That one earplugs were necessary above about 40mph, the Levo I'm good cruising at 60-70mph without them.

>>
>>28074430
I'm gonna go ahead and say it will look like shit. The white already looks out of place and if it was just the front fender and tail it's going to look like those parts got damaged and you replaced them and couldn't be bothered to get them painted. I'd add more white like that black piece under the seat and the blue piece just to the left of the logo on the white panel with the sticker with a load of text on it. You want it to flow more from front to rear.

I think you're right, anon. That was my other option I was considering, replacing the cowl fairing between the front windscreen fairing and the side fairing with white. I couldn't decide which would look better, but the way described it with the colors flowing is spot on.

Suzuki got really schizophrenic with their color schemes in the mid 00s to mid teens. Something always looked off with that section to me, but I think going white with those intake cowl fairings should fix it.

I don't think that bit needs to be white, it flows into the darker blue of the frame. This is what I mean. Maybe a bit of white on the smooth sections of the black textured parts too.

The thing that really looks bad is the two shades of blue. I get what they were going for but it only looks okay from some angles (high and from the front) but from the side and the back it again just looks like the tank got damaged and you couldn't get a replacement in the right colour. If anything I would make that part you were thinking of painting white the lighter shade of blue instead, that way you have a nice line going across the bottom of the tank and the top of the white panel.
>>
>>28074682
>>
>>28074711
I wouldn't put any 250 on the freeway for an extended period of time.
>>
>>28074714
Oh I see what you mean. You've got a good eye. The grey highlight, I can paint that piece. However the white highlight you did next to it is the frame. What if I painted the the fake carbon piece right next to those two spots instead?

That rear section I think is the subframe, not plastic unfortunately. I'll have to check it when I get home.

Something like this. I good way to figure out the distribution of different colours is to squint your eyes. Now instead of a random splodge of white at the front and another splodge at the back you'll instead see a fairly cohesive triangle of white, capped off with a large section of light blue and below it a darker blue and blacks.

Also instead of painting stuff I was thinking of just putting some white vinyl on there. Although the upper fairing around the headlight would be fairly easy to paint and you'd get a closer colour match.
>>
>>28074711
People have done it on less, but they're also built different. I'd take a 100 mile or so trip to a nearby town or city and plan to stay the night to see how it feels. 1,000 miles is brutal, and the plywood seats on these bikes will probably give you thrombosis and hemorrhoids after 1k one way. Not to mention, you still have to drive back as well.

The engine will probably be fine, though if it's like mine it'll burn dino oil with that much freeway riding for that long, so I'd bring a quart and throw it in a plastic bag so you can top up if you fall below the line. Fresh-ish tires, fluids, and filters won't hurt either, especially on a trip like this. You're really pushing the bike, but not as much as your body. I did like 600 miles a day to Florida from Nevada on my shadow 750 and it was hell, you'd never catch me doing it on the xt 250, but if you can more power to you. I'd personally only ever try it on a true cruiser or sport touring bike.
>>
>>28074249

You don't even need a box trailer. You can build a lookalike with plyboard and leave it in your yard/on the street

4th gen VFR or 5th gen VFR
3k for the 4th gen 50k miles
2.6k for the 5th gen 40k miles

The specfic 4th gen is cleaner than the 5th along with some mods but the 5ths only flaw is fairings from a couple drops and a speedometer that sometimes stops working (ez fix)

This will be my first bike and something I hold onto for the next few years. I'm leaning into the 5th gen but I'm open to hearing you anons out.

Anyone know their part brands for Jap bikes?
I have a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan EN500C (basic Vulcan 500). It needs a chain, and might need sprockets too. What is the best brand of chain/sprocket+chain kit that I can buy for her? Parts time! Here's what I found:

>OEM chain kit from KawasakiPartshouse
$700 , sorry Jack I just don't have that, and my bike would still be worth $1,000. Does anyone know if this chain kit is worth being literally 15 times more expensive than its competitors?
https://www.kawasakipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/kaw/500b2672f8700223e4790545/chain-kit

>CALTRIC from Amazon or Ebay
I see Caltric chains for sale by themselves for less than $20 on Amazon, and Caltric rebuild kits with sprockets for like $45
https://www.amazon.com/Caltric-Compatible-Kawasaki-En-500-1996-2009/dp/B00JNBIWRA/ref=sr_1_4?sr=8-4
https://www.amazon.com/CALTRIC-Sprocket-KAWASAKI-Vulcan-1996-2005/dp/B01MXYZHQ2/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

>NiCHE chain
The chains themselves are about $30-$40, which is more than a CALTRIC chain. Are they stronger?
https://nicheindustries.com/products/niche-519-cdc2405h

>DiD chain
This one's at WalMart for like $55, I wonder if it's stronger than the other ones?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/DID-520-Chain-520x110-for-Kawasaki-Vulcan-LTD-EN500LTD-1997-2009/641113087?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=19049

Any other brands I should check out? Obviously I want the strongest chain possible
>>
>>28075054
I always go for OEM if I can, or aftermarket options that some trims got from the factory (i.e. Nissin calipers).
>>
>>28075057
OEM costs $700 and you can only get the whole kit, whereas other kits are under $50. I can't afford the OEM. That's why I was asking about the other brands.

Do it yourself or pay out the ass.
It really isn't difficult if you have a complete non-fucked seat.
Literally just memory foam (optional), staple gun and a trip to joann"s fabrics.
Get fabric that is thick but stretches side.to side and top to bottom (some only stretches along one axis).
If you want to do real gator skin it's a little bit trickier.
