>Tbf, I wonder if Jaguar should have moved more upmarket 50 / 60 years ago, in the BL days
Wasn't that the idea of Daimler, though? Truth be told, I don't really see much difference between Jaguar and Daimler models, despite my dad owning a '65 Daimler 2.5 V8, but I know that they were, in theory, supposed to be a more "bespoke" Jaguar. They probably would have been better off shelving the Daimler name, and doing as you said; move upmarket into a kind of sportier rival to Bentley and Rolls Royce.

>The brand has lost much of its shine instead going downmarket to compete with the big German marques.
Pretty much every British brand lost it's shine during this era. Virtually all the brands were under one umbrella, so the need to innovate and compete suddenly went from being being a public concern relating to how good a car actually performed, to a private concern relating to brand identity and validity. It's almost comical to see Stellantis following in their footsteps.

>>28096215
I actually really like what the new owner has done with The Beast. He's brought back that "factory prototype"-esque look that the first iteration had. The second iteration looked a little too much like a kit car for my liking.

>Wasn't that the idea of Daimler, though? Truth be told, I don't really see much difference between Jaguar and Daimler models,
Honestly, I wish Daimler also never went downmarket, nor became rebadged Jags as much I do love the 250 saloon. Daimler should have always been the Rolls Royce or Mercedes 600 Grosser competitor, whereas Jag should have took the fight to Ferrari and Lamborghini. Alvis should have pushed against Bentley lol and continued to build luxury grand tourers (if only BL ever had the funds to invest in their brands sufficiently).

Very much. Tbf, an effective Sloan ladder might have been feasible if BL's management weren't fighting one another for influence within the company; each owing allegiance either to LMC, BMC or Jaguar as opposed to the greater conglomerate. In short, BL still competed against itself like it was a group of small companies, as opposed to economising and supporting one another.

You can thank William Lyons for much of that. He did everything in his power to obstruct Rover products he thought were threatening to Jaguar. Lyons was on BL's board, and Rover had no equivalent man that high up in BL to defend them. Lyons helped kill the P9 (P6BS) sports car and the P8 saloon (intended to be a replacement to the P5), and used his influence to push Rover downmarket. I also believe he had a hand in killing the Alvis TCS grand tourer.
>>
Call me a heretic, but I prefer rubber bumper MGBs. Snub-nosed ones just look unfinished, the little bit of extra wedge completes the shape.

I think its impact in the early 60s has become somewhat since diluted by the fact that many cars since, including from Ferrari, Datsun and Toyota, took some inspiration.

Incidentally, what're peoples opinions on the new ones? From what I understand, unlike the corpse of MG, Lotus cars are still being design and built in Blighty. They're owned now by Geely, who also own LEVC, Polestar and Volvo. The extent to which Lotus are relying on Chinese electric technology though I'm not sure.

It's more the fact that some people are just fucking lazy. Never had a problem at our local tip taking anything we had (apart from asbestos, obviously), all you have to do is make sure it goes in the correct bin, which again isn't rocket science, and it's completely free, UNLESS you're commercial, which is why the pikeys always fly tip. After they've finished bodging a driveway, they'll often just drive down a country lane and tip the waste wherever they please, simply because they can. Think if anything ever happened where I'd want to top myself, I'd go to a pikey campsite and try to off as many of them as possible before committing sudoku. Pikeys are the absolute scum of the earth.

Think the new Griffith was supposed to be around 90-odd grand, which IS expensive, but not exactly out of character. In 1996, a Griffith 500 was £36,705, which works out to nearly £71,585 when adjusted for inflation today. Quite the chunk of change for a car with a 40 year old engine and no power steering.
>>
>>28105096
I know that one shot can cost 10 of these cars )) and sometimes 100 - Great Britain financed it but the results were not very good - and giving money to the abyss is not profitable - and the fact that TVR is from Great Britain does not give them the right to become subsidized. In fact, it is more profitable to finance military projects than cars, which have practically 0 demand ) I have never seen a film where TVR was used, only Lambos and Ferraris

These beautiful machines were called the Dutton Reef.

Fiesta running gear (as if the lights weren't a giveaway), rear engined, amphibious.

I think Mr Dutton sold the tooling etc. to a polish comapny earlier in the year. Whether this means he's making a new amphibian based on different running gear, or it means he's given up I don't know.

To be honest, I don't think there can be much of a way around Lotus going electric. The UK and EU are banning the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2035. If Lotus don't start making the transition now, then they cannot continue to exist as a car maker at all. And at present, electric power is heavy.

I'm also not sure whether many prospective Lotus buyers will tolerate a lack of (heavy) tech in a car when its sold at Porsche prices.

I do sympathise with your concern for the preservation of Lotus' identity though. :/
>>
>>28109186
The more I see, the more I like. Unbelievably based, and while it sounds expensive at 20-odd grand used, I don't think that's too bad for something that's a functioning modern Amphicar. Also being based on a fiesta, I imagine spare parts for the running gear is quite cheap.

Jaguar didn't have a works racing outfit until the mid 80s, before then racing Jags were all privateer-built. The biggest and most successful of these was Group 44 out of the US, who had built up a successful racing team in the 70s running MGs, Triumphs, and Jaguars in Trans Am and IMSA. They also developed the first five XJR Group C cars.

Back then Vauxhall and Opel were entirely separate marques with no cross badging. Vauxhalls were sold in the UK, Holland, Scandinavia, British Oceania, and (in limited numbers) Canada.
In Australia, they were positioned below Chevrolet/Pontiac (who were locally assembled and sold in Australia until the late 60s) and above Holden. They sold like shite because they were weak and unreliable and woefully underequipped for the rough hot Australian environment.
