For the anon who asked about making a video of my valve adjustment, I'm doing a livestream series on it. I just don't have the time to film and edit the videos down into a neat tutorial. All GSs are ez mode to work on. Biggest concern would be how the previous owner modded the bike. If they were like me, for example, you'd be like, "it runs fine but what the fuck man"

Also vacuum diaphragm carbs do not play nice with pods. I'm not going to tell you to track down a stock air box because those are leaky and complicated butttt I would recommend getting something with mechanical slide carbs if you want pod filters. In the case of vintage Suzukis this means VM carbs. Generally 77 to 79. Or you can get whatever you want as long as you leave the intake stock.

A sleeve is as simple of a component as you can get.
If it fits, it ships.
Hell, when hot rodders started building strokers in the 50's they just looked at piston diameters and wrist pin heights and started mixing & matching chevy pistons and ford rods and just slapped shit together.
Engines aren't rocket science.

If you need a porting window, buy a dremel.
Harley Davidson used dental drills to modify existing shell bearings for oil passages for use in their engines over 100 years ago.
And yes, you can get any style custom piston you want.
https://www.jepistons.com/custom-pistons/custom-pistons-order-form

>>28197483
This gets complicated and depends on the engine.
Sometimes you just bore as much as possible, slip in the sleeve and run a stock piston.
Sometimes you have to run a slightly smaller piston.
Sometimes you can over bore and actually pierce the water jacket, seal the sleeve and you can run a stock or larger piston.

That's a steel sleeve in an aluminum cylinder as it is.
That's how basically all bikes are nowadays but modern manufacturing makes it more complicated to remove the sleeve because many cylinders are formed around it, not just a sleeve slipped into it.
But yours is old school.
I haven't looked it up but I'm 99% sure the proper restoration technique is to just replace the sleeve.
But that's later.
That thing has an ass load of meat left on it. You can bore and rebuild it half a dozen times.

I'm not sure if they still make cylinder kits for old airheads, aside for wildly overpriced big bore tuning kits.
You could try contacting a company in Poland called Almot, they specialize in piston and cylinder manufacturing, they make stock size cylinder kits for Ural bikes, might make some for airhead BMWs too.

That aside, those are dry liners and I've heard of Ural dudes milling out the old liner completely and smashing in a new one, I've also read on forums about some milling out the old one, but leaving a shoulder of the old one at the bottom end, where the new dry liner that they slip in will rest on, the other end being held in place by the head.
Do note that this is advanced soviet bike fuckery, but the basic idea on both airheads and Urals is the same.
I've been keeping my eyes open specifically for an old airhead engine to drop in my OHV bike.
>>
>>28197573
BMW airheads are easy to work on and easy to install larger cylinders from larger displacement BMW.

Take thyself to BMW forums as they are great resources.
I would be hunting ways to get more cc since the 900cc engines bolt to the R60 transmissions (my first airhead was a R60/5 with an R90 engine).

Great machines that easily last a lifetime. You can also have cylinder bores coated to resize them back to stock or whatever size you desire.

https://www.usnicom.com/

I'm ancient but still find it odd many of my fellow bikemechs don't know these things.

Actually if you're desperate enough, you could try looking if the 650cc OHC Ural cylinders would fit the airhead block.
From a quick glance, the airhead has the pushrod tubes on the underside, whereas Urals have them over the cylinder.
You could technically run the Ural cylinder upside down and drill an oil hole on the topside for the head.
>>
>>28197587
I mean specifically stuff kinda like this. IDK part of me is worried about the bike becoming unstable from it potentially.

Yeah, but if memory serves the older very early 70s engines are slightly different from the mid 70s ones and parts don't really interchange from the box, but I could also be talking out of my ass here as I don't know that much about BMWs
>>
>>28197624
I'd ignore that thing and get a full width stand instead for much greater stability.

If you have garage or similar access where you can hang a cargo strap from a rafter etc then connect that to bike with a soft sling strap that's total stability because the bike cannot fall. I suspend bikes that way often and it works superbly giving me complete access. I've also used car engine hoists with a strap hung from the boom by while safe it's kind of awkward because of the stand legs.

There are variations which is why I go to BMW specialist venues. It's easy to help suppliers know what you have by sending clear photos and the engine serial number.

Research is king.

Just get them yourself. You have a basement which is the hard part. People should attack their mechanical problems because it pays off quickly and the most useful thing a gearhead can own is their own small shop.

Besides my own I help my bros:
https://forum.chopcult.com/forum/nbsp/how-to-tech/47469-another-easy-safe-bridgeport-milling-machine-move

If you ever need to move a lathe or mill there are many safe, easy methods that avoid paying a rigger. The earlier in life you go for it the longer you'll benefit.
BTW shipping containers (do not buy junk WWT grade) make excellent bike and machine shops. I have four 40ft High Cubes so far.

Contact LA Sleeve too as they've been sleeving cylinders for decades and are rightly famous.

Even if ya don't use them this time all this is worth remembering.

Always wanted to own a shipping container myself, but they get cold so easily during the winter
>just install heating
Nah not paying for that. Then again that could make for a nice sauna and I have some spare wood stoves.

A zoomer mate of mine has a 250cc Sherco, it's apparently taken to abuse extremely well despite being a 2 smoke that lived its life as a proper racing dirt bike before goin g to a kid who hoons the shit out of it as one should.
Biggest issues thus far have been electrical gremlins

Those do work on many bikes and aren't bad as expedient car transmission/transaxle jacks.

The wider the lift the more stable. Unfortunately the cheap offshore makers don't make theirs wide enough for my liking but if you can score a Bulldog or J&S used (which is fine as there is little to wear) they're worth grabbing. Bulldog is more common and ~150 is fair for a used one. (Ugly is better, I scored my second for only 50 bux at a bike swap meet because it was filthy.)

They're easy to heat. I just use an electric radiant heater. No install required. My bro lined his with thin bubble insulation and his mini-split gets so cold in Carolina summers he has to turn it down.

Don't make a container sauna. Wood is best for extremely high humidity.

I don't do wood shop stoves (or wood shops, wood is for camp fires) because they're great for burning down shops and contents.

I dislike fire so no flammables of any size live in mine and two (so far) have industrial CO2 fire extinguishers using standard dip tube cylinders. (I bought them for the cylinder carts then got them home and realized they are full. That lets me completely inert those containers if needed and leaves no residue.

I constantly hunt industrial and medical surplus including patient aka "Hoyer" lifts which are perfect for bike engines, milling machine vises etc. They have non-marking casters and fit through a standard door so they work for apartment dwellers too. They've no problem raising one end of a Harley FXR.

You heat the cylinder on a hotplate then press the old sleeve (it's made of cast iron which is why the bore looks different than the rest of the cylinder) and then press in the new sleeve. After that, the cylinder is bored for the piston and you reassemble your engine.
No welding at all. It's just pressed in/out with a shop press. Your machinist can do it easily.

Good riddance to the 2010s uggo triangle and pentagon shaped headlights. I didn't know anyone even liked them until now I had just assumed that a lot of people merely tolerated it.
Frankly the single round halogen headlamp remains design perfection and fits almost any bike. Every other design (especially Yamaha who can't make an MT wear the same headlight for 2 production years) feels totally over designed like they contracted a design studio to make a 'bold' , 'polarising' or 'fresh' take on a naked which was approved by an employee who doesn't even ride.
Just look at the z900 Vs it's better selling z900rs sibling. I don't want to ride a praying mantis or a transformer

Bro, as I said, I don't like modern bikes very much but you have to admit that CB1000R slaps hard.
Looks simple (compared to today), compact headlight that looks like serious business, not all edgy and stuff but it looks like it's not playing around.
Plus the single sided swingarm... yeah man it looks good. I wish it was a 400.
I guess these were the last days before everything turned into more shit like this abomination >>28197721

>>
>>28197772
If he gets mad at you for that then he's not a friend. Would you get mad if he didn't let you ride his bike? I wouldn't, I wouldn't expect anyone to let me, and even though I'm a fairly decent rider I just wouldn't want to risk someone else's bike. I'd gladly test ride a dealer's bike because if something happens to it then who cares, insurance sorts it and they'd got replacements. But a friend's pride and joy? I'd hate myself if I so much as scratched it.

Should I take a harley dealer sales job? I'm old and tired or working in a call center telling retarded mechanics how to fix trucks.

First bike owner, father passed and now I own his 2004 Honda vt1100 Sabre. It seems like it’s in running condition other than a new battery and tires. But there’s quite some rust and blemishes on and in the exhaust and a bit on the tank, the tank I could maybe wrap or something to atleast hide the rust but I have no clue on how to get this chrome looking good again. Any tips?

What you installing bro?
>>
>>28197881
I am still new to bikes and wrenching but I would be a lot more worried about your rotors than cosmetic rust.
There are loads of resources online in forums and such for removing rust and detailing, but imo baikfus would rather run and look like shit than sit in a showroom
>>
>>28197881
Mothers mag or really any chrome polishing compound. You aren't removing enough material wiping that stuff on to actually matter pluss it cleans off oxidation. I use it on chrome gun parts as well.
>>
>>28197897
NTA but I'm sure that rotor rust will come right off with some braking

Already got new ones on the way yeah I know they’re bad. I’ve wrenched a bit on cars for a while but I can tell those rotors are bad. Just not used to cosmetic stuff cause I don’t usually bother

I’ll look into that, thanks

Finally not sick. Hopefully this weekend I can ride after finishing adding the parts I ordered. I have some fairings to go above the engine, a windshield, passenger pegs, and an exhaust slider to add. I was losing strength trying to get the bolts off with an allen wrench last week. What the fuck do they do to these rebel bolts to get them on so tight...
>>28198081
I think it is the only polishing compound have gotten that could clean up 60 year old plus hand gun scratches without making my hands and arms sore from polishing so much. I also have some methods for plastic care but that is more for cost savings to not use name brand.

What can we expect from.the upcoming honda V3? I think it's gonna be a beast

>The water-cooled 75-degree V3 engine is being newly developed for larger displacement motorcycles, and has been designed to be extremely slim and compact. It features the world’s first electrical compressor for motorcycles, which is able to control compression of the intake air irrespective of engine rpm, meaning that high-response torque can be delivered even from lower rpm. In addition, the electrical compressor allows a high degree of freedom of layout of all components in the limited space available on a motorcycle and efficient centralization of mass. It also does not require any form of intercooler

Not sure where you live but Cycle Gear sell a bunch of stuff that looks generic in their stores. Don't know how safe any of it is though. You need to go to the UK and Euro brands to find CE rated fashion gear.
