caught these two guys fighting.

I was just walking into a parking lot and stumbled on them didn't have much of a chance to change my settings just sprayed and prayed and they flew away.
It got me thinking tho, what would have been the right course of action if I had more time, would a flash have helped in such a low light situation? I know my apature was set to 8 which was a left over, but I had to keep my shutter speed low since they were fighting in the shade.

Unless your camera is defective and captures UV you need to go over that bird with a moire correction tool. Did they weaken or remove the AA filter from the Z6-3?

Most birds feathers when still attached to the bird and are taken care of by the bird have crazy colors to them in certain light.

They have a little sheen, but are not made of bismuth and crosshatch patterns that perfectly correspond to the 3 primary colors. See how the wing goes from a swept feather pattern to a colored crosshatch midway through?

This actually happens to all cameras with CFAs. Not just even, but especially fujis. The "low quality" photo that's not an extreme closeup shows something closer to what it really looks like but as soon as the details randomly align with individual pixels, the algorithm turning the CFA into a full color image shits its pants and draws rainbow squiggles everywhere. You got moire dude. It also shows up in eyebrows, especially if they're catching the light which confuses the CFA even more.

When you have moire with lightroom's aggressive small radius sharpening, you get worms. Capture one has a tool for fixing it, no idea about LRC. Maybe try another program that demosaics differently or keep an eye out for weird shimmering patterns in the EVF

It does look better as-is I think. But yes, that's just weird moiré effect, which is unavoidable with digital cameras.

I just got a D7500, and am looking at that exact lens, I'm just using my old 70-300mm that I had for my old camera. Not the best but it does the trick for now. I didn't think that lens could take such sharp shots like that!
I might get lucky tho I've seen people selling the Nikkor 400mm primes for like 1500 now.

No, it's not good considering anything. It has nothing to do with the lens being vintage or manual focus. You used the wrong lens and wrong camera settings for the shot. Cropping so heavily that the noise is that prominent and trying to AI it away is not "pretty good" it's doing it wrong. This isn't the photo, it's a tiny part of it. Posting this on a photography board is going to result in this response and rightfully so.

Not by you, but the AI did it. The whole image is full of AI artifacts. The upscaling and heavy unsharp mask that makes the bird look muddy and smudgy, and your "low resolution" recovery settings make the plants look like water paintings. This isn't a photograph, it's digital (sh)art that was generated for you by mashing some sliders.

This is a photography board. Defend yourself all you want but remember this: If you ever decide to go down the right path and actually advance, you will look back at these shots and cringe. You'll want to thank everyone who ever told you to stop doing this.

What camera and settings are you using? The exif is missing ISO/SS/Aperture settings.
Getting manual focus on birds in flight is going to be a losing battle regardless if I'm honest and they will always look pretty bad unless you're very skilled with a manual lens. Manual lenses are really only good for static subjects and astrophotography, or poorfags to cope about 'muh soul' and 'muh tactile feeling'. Depending on the body, it's really worth investing into a decent telephoto lens that works for your bodies AF otherwise you'll continue to get really blurry and out of focus shots. This is excluding the other stuff with the photo, but you can't really fix a out of focus shot regardless.
Most of them appear to have slightly below the right SS to keep them frozen, depending on bird you really should be aiming for a minimum of 1/1600 to 1/2000, some may require even higher values. Hell most songbirds even static on a branch move a LOT and usually need a minimum of 1/1000.

It's because birders don't care about photography, just birds. Most of the posts in these threads are basically just ID shots, which is a birder staple. They have always been all over the internet.

As for amateur photographers who want to shoot birds, most initially fall into the maximum reach trap... the longest lenses and smallest sensors they can find. When this doesn't work, desperation may lead to cropping and other editing, at least for a short while. In reality, just being as close as you can is the best bet but it takes time and you miss a ton of shots albeit mediocre ones. Once someone gets a shot they love though, even by chance, they'll likely no longer care about losing lesser ones. Pretty much everyone starts like this, it's normal. The outlier now is AI though because it's going to keep a lot of people from progressing for even longer, especially as it advances. It's all down to the individual and their level of integrity. Most simply won't care but that's how it is for everything and it doesn't matter. If you let it matter it will consume you.

There are a lot of things at play here: overlapping communities, different skill levels, different priorities, and (in my opinion) slipping standards for society as a whole, not just photography. There isn't much you can do apart from print your photos and hang them on your walls and just not really care about much else. There are others like you out there though, don't worry about it. Stop stressing. I implore you to try film even if it's inefficient and expensive as it will keep you busy and is several steps away from the current thing. Traditions and cultures won't die if you don't let them. They'll just become more cherished if anything.

You made good points and then ruined it with this one simple statement.
The only people falling into the GAS trap are because they're chasing something they cannot solve with money(focus, lighting generally being the two), outside of reach, usually due to social pressures or bad critiques. This board is a major pusher of that, and buying a bunch of cheap garbage(i.e. a bunch of shitty film, P&S cameras, or 'muh boken chink lens') which in turn costs more than a solid body and lens that'd carry someone a lot further and give them room to grow.
Post some bird shots from film, as you're pushing the film route. We rarely have those, so would like to see 'em genuinely.

Generally it's better to go higher without a tripod in general, lower the shutter speed, the more stable you and your hold needs to be, and the more static your subject will need to be.
Dunno much about nikon's ecosystem, but I'd get a proper telephoto in the 100-400 range, or an equivalent that works with your AF system.

It definitely is if you can't afford the lens you actually want or just don't want to carry it. A lot of people crop with a 70-300 because it is less than 1/3 the price of a 100-400 but a decently high resolution body (ie: 5ds r) is not much more expensive than a normal one. A lot more people just buy pre-cropped cameras because they're going out for something else first and photography second or are just pussies.

True, but that's why I just risk losing a shot and waiting. Last week I spent over an hour in the rain about 20 feet up on a fallen tree waiting for an owl to hunt lower, with light disappearing fast. I took a snapshit with my pocket potato, you can see it near the top left of the frame on that skinny birch. It was making rounds but staying over 50 feet up. I could have gotten something with a longer (and slower) lens but like I said, just different priorities. I don't like to point up or down, shoot backlit subjects, or sacrifice precious light or quality for extreme focal lengths. If I miss stuff, I miss it. I also don't use flashes. I did get what I was after though and filled the frame which was great. Made my year pretty much.

Forgot to add, really only if you're interested in pursuing wildlife photography in general.
If you're just exploring it with a manual lens for fun, but it's not your focus, then spend the money elsewhere for what you want to shoot.

In some aspect, he does have a point as heavily cropping just makes things bad even on a 24mp FF sensor, however that can be solved by a longer focal length lens instead of a body upgrade at least for farther subjects you cannot get close to.

When you want to do an extreme crop from a shitty "i didnt get it right in camera" snapshit like this, don't just shrink the 3:2 area to crop sensor sizes, because you'll never get the feather detail gawking you wanted anyways and you're zooming in on an AA filter. You can increase the apparent impact of the bird with a less extreme 4:5 or 1:2 crop without lowering quality as much.

99% of people start looking at a picture from the top right, so you could have a better photo with a milder 4:5 crop putting the bird around the top right end of the center.

Okay, so the focus is infront of the bird and on the reeds(look to the right of the birb the tall reed crossing the frame at a left angle is the one most in focus), do you have focus peaking enabled?
That may help you in getting the right focus, that should be an option on nikon, not sure if it works for a fully manual lens as I haven't tried.
In your camera is there any saturation or clarity sliders set? Outside of the focus issue, not sure if it's the lens, but the image looks odd from a color perspective.
I made this mistake for months before learning otherwise, but when editing the images, set tint to 0 till you learn more about what it should look like, it'll keep a more natural and neutral look.
Water and leaves look okay, but the red/magenta on the reeds looks 'pumped' which might be tint having an affect as any positive value will pump magentas.
Really, a good in focus image would be best to go off of, if you have a figure, stuffed animal for a dog/cat/etc, or lawn ornament. Practice on that, it'll help as it's a strictly static subject with eyes to focus on.
Once you get that, then work on editing it to be natural, or very and I mean VERY slightly enhanced. Less is more on every slider, avoid sharpening like that plague as it usually causes more problems and color issues.

Not everyone is made out of money.
Sure, you can get full frame camera with insanely big resolution sensor and just crop the shit out of the image in post or even in the camera. But that's like $7000 dollar. Some people have car cheaper than this. I dont even have a car.
If you get old DSLR with idk, 300 mm eq. lens, all your birds will turn into blurbs. But I think you'd have much better experience with a shitty bridge camera with like 24-1200 mm eq lens and tiniest sensor imaginable.
And if you realize that photography isnt something you like, you can use that bridge cam to spy on people.

Saying it's all relative isn't being picky. You can get shots of a deer with 100mm if you really want to, with patience. It's great for wider shots but you'll only get a couple for close-ups before it's spooked. You'll definitely get a hell of a lot more than 35mm. Reach is reach and you can have too much or too little.

I certainly wouldn't recommend 100mm for a main lens but it's absolutely capable of getting you the shot you need if you go in with a plan. If you're always battling with heat shimmer or low light for a certain shot, closer + shorter is always going to help. I have used my 105 f/2.8 for foxes and deer before, with a blind. I replaced it with a 70-200 f/2.8 though because having less and more focal length than 105 while still maintaining constant aperture is an obvious win.

Plus if price is an issue, you can get extremely fast lenses on the shorter end. They are great for songbirds in bushes. Would solve a lot of the missed focus, motion blur, and noise issues some people are having too. Light transmission is king with wildlife.

Sony/Sigma? My RF100-400mm has 0 issues with AF tracking at F9(I stop down for sharpness) at 400mm, don't see why that'd be an issue if I'm honest.
1: Disable full frame tracking autofocus(I have it to be toggled by a button near the lens on my r6mkii)
2: Specify animal tracking
3: I usually swap between autofocus modes depending on if there's a lot of brush/grass/branches in the way, generally in the medium capture group square, if darker/low light point, then dot if it's really struggling on a lot of brush
4: A big thing that's helped for me, is taking away AF on half shutter press, leave it for metering, have one back button dedicating to Eye AF tracking, and another for general AF tracking. This gives you a ton of control as to what the AF is doing and when, and if it gets 'stuck' on something, can either shift the lens and back to reset, or hit the AF tracking then back to Eye AF tracking
5: If your body has different target type AF settings, Set tracking sensitivity to -1, helps sticking to a singular target. For me on canon I have it set to Servo AF and Case 2, which helps it ignore brush/grass and shit when it obscures the target, even sticks to the back of the head when they're facing away
My buddy recently got the Sony G 150-600mm for his A7 III, he hasn't taken it out yet(he said it was too hot today, i.e. he's a bitch kek), but when he does I'll ask if he's had any issues and let you know if the thread is still up by then or post the update in the thread if you catch it.

Yea blinds are definitely an above than average thing to use, and make a huge difference. That's something I'm going to work towards once I get all my gear in order. Unfortunately I'm stuck with some shitty lenses, except one that a friend sold me for cheap cheap. A 70 - 200 f2.8.

I don't really have time tho to settup a blind in a location, and sit there for hours on end. So I'm looking into getting a sort of all purpose bazooka lens to go on hiked and if the opportunity comes I can stop for a bit or change up lenses if need be but I'd have that one lens to fall back on.

If you want to avoid rucking around a blind, get a 3d camo poncho, but make sure it's not a fabric that'll make a ton of noise. They'll run you around 80 bucks for a decent one, around 120 bucks for a great one and work well, and they pack down small. Some companies make a 3d camo netting/wrap for guns that could be repurposed for a telephoto.
I've used them for bowhunting before, so if they work on deer should be fine for most things.

Just giving tips that have helped me and from what I've gathered from Simon d'Entromont and Duade Paton.
Always find what works best for you and test various settings in different situations to see how it handles, for the lens definitely do your research on that before pulling the trigger, in general don't just blindly listen to some retard on the internet.

Yah some are pretty harsh even with highlights/white turned down, just bad lighting and over compensating trying to keep the subject exposed properly with exposure comp.
Need to get better at not going heavy handed on exposure comp as even if it's not peaking, still overexposed.

Sadly not right now, those were from around 8/9am if I'm not mistaken. Hoping to get out early tomorrow and again around sunset if weather permits.
Most of my shots in general are from an hour or two walk/hike I do after work, or mid day 5ish mile hikes on the weekend. Just need to get out earlier and stop slacking.

You missed my point entirely, I'm not saying to get a bigger sensor or to crop, (which I don't do apart from utilizing zooms) I'm saying to ditch the toxic "reach above all else" mantra and focus more on getting physically closer with a faster setup, whatever it may be. You should be totally fine with not getting shots 99% of the time, that's just how it is. It isn't a contest.

My DSLR is 11 years old and my film camera is 27, you won't see me telling people to needlessly spend money. I literally just told someone to not buy a lens here: >>4333734 and have done it many other times. I've told myself not to buy a new camera every year for 7 or 8 years now because I don't need it and like what I have. I'm only ever honest here, take it or leave it. I just do what works for me so naturally suggest the same for others. My opinion is that a 300 f/2.8 + literally any 35mm film camera = perfection.

And yeah I have to agree. Its not reach. Its not aperture. Its not sensor size. Its not lens size. It's all of those things. But I'd argue focal length has slightly higher priority when you're trying to shoot a feathered fuck that would fuck off moment you get any closer. Question is how much is too much.

Well, I can say with certainty that the best shots I've missed out on were from having too much focal length (not being able to get closer) and the worst were from not having enough. I fill the frame with the subject a few times per year with 300mm, often in poor lighting when getting closer with a faster lens would have been better. But no single lens can do it all and it's just not feasible carrying enough gear to cover all scenarios, so the middle ground is where I feel the safest.
