I've been enjoying my rx100, some anons told me not to get the vii because it's got a slower lens to make up for the 200mm focal length. Instead telling me to get the earlier 24-70mm models

As is a large sensor and a fast lens, giving you better low light performance (along with better IS) and a (real) shallower depth of field. It just depends what you need, I don't often find myself in unexpected situations where I'll need more than 70mm, it's usually planned so I'll take my other camera out with a 70-200mm or 150-500mm.

I doubt it, they used to be yearly releases and now it's been 5 years since the last one. They're just been slapping the same old sensor into vlogging bodies instead. You've now got four lenses to choose from (24-200mm, 24-70mm, 22mm, and 18-50mm) but they're not interested in putting an EVF in the ZV bodies. Other than a different focal length I don't think there would be much to add to an RX100 VIII, unless they come out with a new sensor.

I always end up taking pictures of them more than I take pictures with them. I just have no use case for them. I would rather carry a huge DSLR because the size and weight doesn't matter to me. I'm not trying to be sneaky so I gain nothing. Usually if I want the "digital lomography" look I use an old camera phone.

I wanted a camera to take portraits of people in non-extreme condition (no ultra low light, no shit weather) and thought I should go with an old Nikon or Finepix with an 85mm 1.8

Then I realized that with this set up this bad boy can get great shots and be also extra discreet and portable.

I do love the sensor though. I love it so much that I bought a K5 today, so I could have the same sensor in a weather sealed body and a viewfinder

I've got a FF for bokeh, low light events and portraits, desu it's rare I'm out and I see something interesting where I need to isolate a subject with depth of field. It's a crutch for most people anyway and is usually solved with good framing.

I've used a friend's a6400 with a tamron zoom in the past and the bokeh was very underwhelming, I imagine the little 1 inch sensor on the rx100 would be the same even at F1.

The RX100s have the same size and res viewfinder as the A7C (0.6x, compared to 0.7x of the II), so it can be done in a tiny camera. It is definitely usable and it's a nice option to have on sunny days where the rear screen can be pretty much unusable unless you shade it with your hand.

TBF Sony jpg colors are actually really good if you're not poor. These days they're up there with canon and fuji, definitely ahead of nikon's "ken rockwell's take on an iphone" colors WAY better than panasonic.

They have the same problems in jpeg as every camera: sharpening and noise/moire reduction are crap and there is no such thing as good auto white balance, so your friends will use (you) as the example for cameras not being much better than phones, because the automatic shit they put on cameras so they can say they shoot jpeg is actual fucking trash. yes, even with fuji. good colors, but fine detail is ass and no amount of cope about standing 4 feet from an 8x10 or how zooming in is evil will actually stop normal people from zooming in or looking at prints closely, and asking "is this supposed to be better than my so called AI phone smears?". You whine about "pixel peeping", they say "i can look at a picture however i want, sorry your camera sucks". Imagine not being a failed painter so blurry pics could be intentional instead of gear cope.
HDR modes on cameras are also total shit.
Toggling jpeg settings on screen is a time waster.

Just open raws in capture one, set up nice nr/sharpening defaults and -5 saturation as standard, fix AWB overcorrecting for max whiteness all the time so light can have actual color to it (copy and paste fix), do your highlight protection and DR things, and export, and only then do cameras beat phones, regardless of brand.

The standard in photography, including for using fuji, is shooting raw. jpeg engines, like auto and scene modes, are half baked crap from 2010 (just like phone integration is literal shit). And knowing how many luddites are in japan, they're probably there for the domestic market that's still stuck in 2010. The sooner you realize the better.

These cameras run up to $1699, $2000, $4500, with $500-8000 lenses, and they still can't produce better IQ and dynamic range in jpeg than a hobbyist can with a canon rebel t7 and a copy of capture one, and are actually so bad that a fucking iphone 16 has better fine detail, more accurate colors, less ugly noise, and more dynamic range than any jpeg out of any camera with under 45mp.

i have a sony zv1 (same colors as a6400/a7c/a6700) and i like the colors on it more than my nikon z50, enough that i'm more often satisfied with the .jpegs coming off the camera than the nikon

personally re: zv1, its not a bad camera re: iq (aviation general in /n/ has a bunch of pics i posted recently from it) but i do find two complaints with it

-lack of dynamic range from low light + small sensor has me occasionally missing the shot
-fragile/delicate, feels like it'll break easily as a edc cam

im looking for a sub-$300 a5100 to replace it, its a 1/2 inch thicker but its probably the smallest apsc cam that's not a $1000+ ricoh gr3/fuji x100 (theres the canon m100/m200 but i like snoy more)

I actually agree with this, but I disagree with every camera having the same autofocus and ergos. Nikon Mirrorless AF fucking sucks pre-2023 and it's unironically on the level of a early Sony Alpha like a a5100 or a6000.

The whole colors thing is way overrated too. I got memed into believing Sony colors were awful until I bought a Sony camera....and the colors and exposure control on this camera are good enough I just use the jpegs straight off the camera after a quick crop or leveling and hitting the auto button in Lightroom for Android. I don't even bother shooting raw anymore. I like posting on /p/ to share my photos.

Nailed it. I've processed RAWs from all the major brands except Panasonic. It's not all the time. But there are times when Sony and Nikon leave you with a stubborn green or blue cast that's hard to get rid of. No idea why, and a simple color temp adjustment or color balance change either doesn't completely eliminate it, or screws up colors in another way. It's worse in video because even 10-bit log isn't as flexible as 14-bit stills RAW.

I can't say it's so horrible or consistent that one should just avoid either. But it was definitely a reason for me to stick with Canon all the way back when I was tempted by the A7Rs. And the reason why a friend with a boatload of pro Nikon cameras and lenses (shit like the D850, Z7ii, 500mm f/4) ends up shooting his Fuji cameras a lot of the time.

Useless because you're not testing for the problem. When there's not a problem RAWs from any brand are in your hands. You can decide the look and color that you want. Preferring one over the other is retarded because you can produce any final product that you want. Sony has fallen behind here. The 24mp sensors out perform the A7IV and in fact are neck-in-neck with the 12mp A7s bodies now. And the 45mp sensors out perform the 61mp A7R's. Sony sacrificed high ISO performance across their latest generation, even for sports in the A9iii. Not enough to knock them out of consideration, but they're not the low light kings any longer.

I have never had color issues on any camera except for an ancient olympus with an adapted film lens that had a green cast near grass and foliage, 99% from lens fungus and old coatings. Modern lenses are always neutral. Skin tones are great on this. There are never any inherent color casts from this camera that you dont have to add yourself. It has never died in the rain. It works fine.

I have also used a pentax k3, nikon z5 and a canon r6. All for travel snapshits and family group portraits where you cant dial in an edit for just one skin type. They all do the exact same thing. They all take good looking pictures.

The people trying to convince you that sony has bad color, that canon will end your social life, that nikon has bad colors, etc are either mentally ill or paid social media shills. You are hanging out with absolute rejects. The only /p/ meme that might be true is panasonics breaking.

Always set WB off a grey card when shooting video under artificial light. And all cameras add tints in scenes with lots of one of the white balance axis colors, so badly nikon had to split auto white into a bunch of different settings, so shoot raw and remember daylight = 5600k. Anyone who has been a >photographer for at least two cameras should have figured this out already. If you have color problems after figuring out how white balance works and are not using vintage, low end, or special purpose glass, you have competence problems, not camera problems.

R6 is absolutely fine under those conditions as long as you choose AWB-W. I can't think of a lighting setup that has given my Canon bodies problems dating back to the 7D, assuming the light was sufficient for the sensor's max usable ISO. Go all the way back to the 10D/1Ds days and you would very rarely run into quirky RAWs, kind of like Sony and Nikon now, just not as often.

I use a Sony A7 mark 1 and it’s become my BnW adapted film lens camera the colours are just as bad as everyone says but it has great dynamic range and is perfect for black and white.

Picked up an X100VI last weekend since I managed to catch one on sale at MRSP.

I only heard about it a few weeks ago and I've been bored of shooting on my old A6000 for the last 6 years, and barely using it the last 2.

Hopefully I'll have some fun with this when I go to Japan in a few months time.

I love how with almost every post you reveal just how much of a nophoto you really are. Beach volleyball tournaments are typically on...wait for it...public beaches. Nobody is policing photographers because they couldn't if they wanted to. A team might have their own hired photographer there, but as long as you're not going on the "court" or interfering with the games, nobody gives a fuck. Same for surfing which is shot from a public beach. I shot from all around those games, you need permission to be in the water but not on the beach or pier. The reason that one is cropped (2.1x and still solid at 16x20 btw) is because I was out of position at that moment.

Independent, verified sources show that Canon is #1 in MILC sales. Sony issued a press release with no data and a bunch of asterisks, i.e. they purposely exclude categories to try and appear to be #1. They better be careful with that shit, it could run afoul of SEC rules.

In this market entry level apsc buyers are very likely to upgrade in the near future, and very likely to stay with their mount. It's not like the old days where most entry level SLR/DSLR sales went to people who just weren't happy with their P&S. The ILC market has shrunk to cover people who are serious about photography where the old P&S/low end SLR segment typically never upgraded or even bought another lens.

Sony had a very narrow window of opportunity to become #1 between the time the A9 came out and the time the R5/R6 were released. That window is closed. But they lacked the glass (literally, people were buying EF adapters for their Sony bodies) and just couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. People like me were tempted, but held fast because of glass and Sony's various problems (weather sealing, durability, professional support, and yes, color science).

Each camera model can use its own filter specs which means 5 different cameras with the same lens will get 5 different color renditions with the same processing. If you use a different lens, different colors. Then theres all the bit depth, whole image SNR, per pixel SNR shit.

The raw file format isnt an untouched data dump either. Its processed and each camera has some snowflake shit to itself.

But the way the raws data is interpreted is the biggest "if", and it varies wildly from proteam to program and by settings/profiles, and its here that shit gets fucked up. Adobe doesnt even render noise and sharpening the same as c1.
