I really need an explanation as to why the ancient piece of shit Soyuz was the ONLY way for anyone to get to orbit until Crew Dragon while the largest space industry on the planet can’t make Starliner work? What the FUCK is going on? Why is fucking Soyuz working and Starliner isn’t? Ecxplain.

>>
>>16288659
Soyuz predates the moon landing so they've had time to work out any bugs.
Starliner was planned by Boeing to be cost plus, so they didn't really worry about it. It was just going to be another way for them to suck up NASA's billions. Unfortunately for them SpaceX not only succeeded but beat them by five years so they never got more than the original sum. Not only did they get $4bil from NASA, they had to spend another $1.5bil of their own money. All this while the best aerospace engineers are taking a pay cut to work at SpaceX. It was always doomed

Local news story on SpaceX relocation plans to Starbase.
>>
Also HOW is SLS cleaning Starship’s clock like this? I get that SLS is wildly expensive, but it FUCKING WORKS, Starship does NOT. Forget reusable tech, it can put exactly ZERO kg into orbit currently. ZERO. It literally doesn’t fucking work. SpaceX has the best design lab on the planet and enormous funding from large government contracts and has.been building and testing furiously — and yet SLS is reheating old tech and parts. We’re engineers of that era just THAT much more talented? Is it just screwing themselves trying to reach an unrealistically aggressive cost ratio? What is it?

The bait post above made me realize that both starship and sls are designed for reuse.

Starship for the flight hardware, sls for the ideas, contractors and pork.

Starship is still working on its reuse goals, but sls reused everything it was meant to before it ever took off.

Is it proper to say mars belongs to the earth? Because humans are here and we control basically everything?
Is it more proper to say “Mars belongs to the Sun” (or, mars belongs to the solar/sol system, I guess)
In my opinion: Mars belongs to Earth, but if I think about it too hard… the sun doesn’t belong to the earth! It’s the other way around, the Earth obviously belongs to the Sun; which dwarfs us with its superior gravity and its unfathomably energetic nuclear activity

A reminder that the new trunk turns Dragon into a deep space vehicle.

You don't need a heat shield capable of handling Lunar return velocities if you can propulsively decelerate.

This will remove the key niche that makes Orion (and thus SLS) indispensible for the Artemis program.
>>

>The largest robotic arm on the ISS, Canadarm2 weighs 1,800 kilograms and is used to hold crew members during EVAs, move station modules, spacecraft, orbital replacement units and Dextre on the US Orbital Segment. The ROS does not require spacecraft or modules to be manipulated, as all spacecraft and modules dock automatically, and may be repositioned or discarded the same way. Each Strela crane weighs 45 kg and can perform all necessary tasks, with substantial weight savings, less complexity and less maintenance than the Canadarm2 and the European Robotic Arm.

No not the ISS, the deorbit vehicle. Elon is saying it needs a low max thrust because of the panels. How hard would it really be to just cut/tie them down? I don't know anything but that seems cheaper than $800mil. I guess space is hard
>>
>>16289130
Did they say why the last one failed?
>>
>>16289435
I thought about this too back when he said it and my only thought is, where would you put the panels after some EVA welding or whatever to get them off?
The roll up soft panels might not be a problem (assuming they can be rolled back up) but the stiff panels are quite large and a lot of pieces of the station in general came up
in the shuttle bay door (so nothing today can really take it back down) and like half the hardware on the station is hard-bolted together; not designed to come apart
>>
>>16289421

this, or maybe get hit by something and do the same. don't want a cloud of junk in a high orbit like that. it'll take forever to deorbit by itself.

It would be great if we could even take one of the later modules off and bring it down, but we don't have the tech for it now.
I'm not sure that Shittle could even land with one of the modules in its cargo bay, it might be too heavy.
>>
>>16289449
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need to bend them. Just stack them up and tie them to the big flat part. You can even use a three million dollar aerospace grade rope if you really want to

>>16289452
Real Planetes hours. How long until in-orbit servicing becomes viable?

Before you say 'never', realize that this is what the ISS crew basically are already. They spend much more time doing repairs and maintenance than on "science," and what they call science is mostly just following step-by-step directions radioed to them from the ground. The reason astronauts have 6 PhDs each is because it's hypercompetitive, not because they actually need the skills.
>>
>>16289469
i know how to do it.
>>
>>16289471
The problem is probably more to do with breaking the panels like twigs if you had high thrust. You want to deorbit the entire station, not break everything apart and leave 50% of the station in LEO
>>
>>16289471
The low max thrust limit is because the panels are floppy. They're designed for an environment where basically no forces are acting on them
>>16289474
Yeah I bet 70s NASA would've handled this differently. When space is fuller and everyone up there is private, you'll probably see some cowboys again.

Yeah, no fucking shit. How can anyone do this if the core mechanism of the technology is kept under a gorillion locks and they guy with the keys is an 80 year old that takes 5 minutes to open each locks. Fission rockets will never EVER be self funded. The only way market funding returns to this sector is whenever fusion gets solved in the next 15-20 years and the focus is on miniaturization.

There is an interesting point in Hullo's video. He said that right before Bridenstein became a NASA admin, a Lunar rover was concelled and because he was really interesting in exploration of the Moon, he brought it back as VIPER. Now, under another admin, they're concelling the Lunar rover again.

Him and Jurczyk were really one of the best people at NASA in recent years.

I agree in principle, but I am unconvinced that there would necessarily be male and female aliens.

Earth itself provides counter examples even among macroscopic multicellular life, even among vertebrates, and even among mammals. Male seahorses incubate eggs, male birds are the beautiful ones, and there's enough to write about hyenas to fill whole books.

But supposing there were male and female aliens, why should we expect them to be more sexually attractive to us than any other non-human animals? Many mammals are easily classified as male or female in a way that's analogous to humans, but very few people find dogs or apes or badgers sexy.

There are many perfectly fertile human females who due to one defect or another, or even simply age or plainness, are below the standards of the type of men who would genocide alien races in their quest for alien pussy. If not they could simply stay on earth fucking fatties, grannies or double baggers. Is it reasonable to expect alien females to be more attractive to human males than actual human females?

tl;dr aliens are likely to be ugly and not hot and not resemble the female sexual ideal ingrained in human males by millions of years of evolution, and on that basis I expect they will make bad sex slaves

I think there's a small chance that alien females could be sexy

Consider that alien life may not even look that strange and could be surprisingly earth like. If the environment isn't that different, and they are carbon based, life could develop in a similar way to earth, like a broad application of convergent evolution. Even aliens in fiction aren't that alien, we just use earth's ocean life as an inspiration for land dwelling aliens, because ocean creatures are the strangest point of reference we have. In reality, something mammal-like could be common as far as alien life is concerned.

Then consider that primates and hominids are especially prone to develop intelligence because they are physically capable of tool use.

The final piece of the puzzle is beauty. I think our intellect gave us an enhanced perception of beauty, which is more universal than we think. We then used that perception of beauty in the process of sexual selection, which is why humans are by far the best looking primates. An intelligent species of sexually reproducing aliens may produce offspring that are palatable to us for this reason. Imagine an alien race capable of painting themselves or carving marble statues of themselves equal to earth's masters. It's actually hard to imagine they could be that ugly.

Chinese scientists propose information superhighway between Earth and the moon
>The full network of 30 satellites and three lunar ground stations would provide real-time communication, navigation and monitoring services to global users
>it would be able to monitor and track moving targets as small as one metre (3.28 feet) in the region between the Earth and the moon, known as cislunar space

Could be a cloud or something?
>>

If the hint of yellow I am seeing is Polaris, then just barely visible enough to try and line up on the chart. The light pollution here must have gotten even worse since they began mass adoption of LED street lamps. It's humid but there are no clouds to speak of right now. Sirius is not visible here at this time of the year, its below my feet.

I need to go back to the Carpathian mountains or to West Pomerania for another comparison.

It's generally understood that NASA is a pork funnel, but it is rarely, if ever, publicly discussed how it happens. The NASA OIG has constantly advocated for funding to be evaluated for performance, but time after time it is remarked that NASAs definition of performance differs significantly from business and legal contexts. The Mobile Launcher 2 contract has been a massive and ongoing shitshow but the OIG found it was NASA's inability to set requirements that causes most of its problems. They start programs without a goal and figure they can just amend their way to the final result.
>>
>>16291016
Space colonization is that ultimate survival plan. We need to move from one planet to another. This isn't an option. Its not a backburner plan. Its the #1 priority for survival of our species today. Anyone that tries to slow down needs to be put down like the rabid dogs they are

We know how fond Elon is of Putin these days; he's even repeating Putin's final solution plans for Crimea and Ukraine on Twitter without being asked, probably believing Putin revealed them to him because Putin considers him an important world leader. This thing is about egos and ideology. Musk actually likes Putin and Medvedev because he thinks they're "based" and "tough" and he considers them allies in his fight against liberal "wokists", who in Musk's view destroy everything. And Putin knows this, and he's spurring it on. Putin is Ex-KGB, he knows how to work gullible fools. Injecting distrust and division into western societies is Putin's number one goal, and manipulable narcissists like Musk are a perfect vehicle for that. That's what's happening here. Elon is an empiricist
Of course he would act based on observations
>>
Elon has forgotten that it was the Obama-Biden administration that bailed out Tesla in 2009 during the financial crisis.
>>
>>16291135
those are the direct result of democrat policies
>>
>>16291159
so what? Biden has been nothing but hostile
>>
>>16291159
They were bailing out everyone back then, they had bailout fever.

Tourist trap derives from the information asymmetry between tourists and the market.

It's an unwritten rule in every democratic nation that you don't run against the current president if he is from your party. Dunno why but probably to stop discord that could make voters lose confidence.

>president is literally senile and has been senile even before he became president
>noo muh democracy!
why are americans (both Ds and Rs) so mentally ill? and why are you even talking about this shit in a thread dedicated to space flight?

go back to >>>/pol/ you fuckers.
>>
>>16291180
space is inherently connected to politics since a government agency (NASA) is the principle driving force behind the most important space project at the moment (Artemis) which hinges on exec branch support
>>
>>16291180
non-Americans have no place in spaceflight
you are off topic

is mark kelly old space or new space?

Also why does he get 3 space sybians?
>>
>>16291188
If they had anything of value to contribute to spaceflight they would have already moved to America.
>>
>>16291156
what are you talking about? Anyway if you listen to sam you'll want to listen to sam less.
>>
>>16291190
kelly is sane and smart and knows how to play the politics game. He was the pilot on shittle Return To Flight.
He was an independent before being a D for Arizona.
Would be a fine component POTUS, and would hopefully break us out of this blizzaro politics environment and get the Rs back to running normal people like McCains

>>16291180
sorry we don't know what its like to live in a country where you don't get a cool space program no matter who you pick

I already listen to him and he's pretty based. He even stands on the right side of the race and IQ controversy.

Imagine a President whose primary interest for his four (or eight) years in office was enhancing America's presence in space and doing everything possible to expand human settlement off-world.

he was a pencil pusher loser who hardly ever did anything important when he was in kgb lol, nobody cares, he's revealed himself just to be a gambler who got lucky for a while rather than some genius strategist.
