East Germany is a football black hole, the 2014 squad also only had one player born in East Germany (Kroos, and he moved to the west as a teenager). The Olympic medals are trickier in many ways. There is no official guideline, so there is no official way to count it. It does not play a role, really. Especially since we have other splits (Saarland was independent for a while, Germany changed from Empire to Weimar Republic to Nazi, etc). At first, we also had a unified German team that competed back when both were separated. So there are many ways to count the medals if you want
Technically, these medals were all won by Germans. But no one really gives a shit and tries to brag with them. Maybe on 4chan for fun. There's no right way to do it

So how are they supposed to count? If you want to keep out East Germany, you must also be nitpicky and control every medal won by the Unified Team, but that would go against the idea and flag the team competed under back then
In most German media pieces, all these medals are counted together - but with a separate count for East German medals as well, usually only 1968-1988. The argument is that Germans won these medals. But none of this is official IOC stuff. Nobody cares about it all in all, it's not a serious business and there is no official IOC table with or without it

A lot of teams are hopefully taking steps forward to avoid total CGR domination. I want Castroneves to get a fifth 500 (he finished 10th last year), Sato, and RHR also ran great races, and are going to be a problem for the field. At the same time we are due for a first time winner lo (indy magic). Armstrong and Simpson are my sleepers to grab wins next year.
