Without thinking about it, entirely subconsciously, you are trained by Pathfinder and D&D to safeguard your players. You are taught to coddle them! And when does this subconscious teaching happen? Not in ANY dungeon master resource. It happens before your first adventure, before your very first D20 roll.

It happens when you create characters.

In Pathfinder, character creation takes a ridiculous amount of time. I ran it for about six years, and I saw it take well over an hour, sometimes going up to two for new players. As a GM who understood the system inside and out, I could get it done in about a half hour.

Losing a character in a game with such a painstaking character creation process is absolutely devastating. As a GM, you wonder if that person will bother to make a new character, or if they will just leave, and if they do, who will go with them? Will you even have a game afterwards?

And enemy statblocks are the same way. You look at these massive text blocks that include three different saving throws, the type of hit dice, types and sub-types of creature, and perhaps most hilariously unnecessary, ALL SIX STATS. Who on earth looks at all that and dares think “I’ll make some monsters of my own!”

Please understand, I’m not saying nobody makes their own monsters. I’m saying that it is an undertaking to make a monster with a statblock like that. Figuring out saves, stats, and heaven forbid you want to get CR correct, good luck with testing out that garbage.

That is purely a pathfinder problem though and I don't understand why so many on this board feel like they have to run it because the world is holding a gun to their head and demanding it.
It's not even a very popular design philosophy. Most new systems/games that are being released are a lot less bloated in mechanics.
People not wanting their characters to die isn't really due to the char creation process but rather due to not wanting to lose all the hours spent on playing it in my opinion.

Closest I got was my party getting hired to clear out some forests my a merchant (djinn who was fucking with us) who didn’t mention they were infested with beastmen and orcs and it was gonna be a lot longer than a single “get in fuck shit up and loot” job and we were bound to this thing.

My Paladin led the charge into an orc camp and started going kill-crazy as his barely sentient/primal force moon maiden patron flooded him with zeal and wrath.

At the same time, one the chief’s concubines, who didn’t like being a meat sock for this dink made her move and the party catches up and sees buckethead popping off and being helped by an equally berserk she-orc and the two tore the chief apart.

They got along great after that, she became a recurring character and I retired that character with him and the orc leaving for the “little house on the prairie”

No coomer shit, just the DM taking the cliche and playing it straight (hyper-loyal orc wife where violence is foreplay) and his way of saying my guy was more orc-like than the orc in the party

The villainess, Regina, was low in the Cult's hierarchy, so she had yet to understand that she joined an organization that was way more than the Illuminati with the serial numbers filed off. As for the serpentfolk... well, they fucking hate humanity more than everything (because ancient humans drove them to the brink of extinction and replaced serpentfolk as the top dog of Earth before Atlantis was even a thing). The Cult had sent Regina and her henchmen to guard the lost underground serpentfolk city that was discovered relatively near her area of operation (Oregon) and catalogue any artifact inside. She didn't realize that half her staff had been killed and replaced by serpentfolk infiltrators in the span of three days, including her head scientist (the sorceror). So, the scaly bastards had everything set up to recover all their valuable artifacts, murder her, and disappear back into the shadows to plot mankind's downfall as they usually do, with said mankind remaining none the wiser. Obviously, they only managed to accomplish the second objective.

The dungeons in my setting are there mainly because of climatic upheavals. The frost giants brought about an ice age to force humans south and expand their own territory. That lasted for centuries before they were driven back and the artifact they used broken. Because of that, mankind is currently reclaiming lost cities and clearing out the strongholds of giants and their allies. The sea level also fell during the ice age, so many new ports had to be built which are now undersea dungeons.

i imagine you could proxy them pretty easy as pestilens, only problem is that the newer clanrats are monopose so there's only so much customization you can do. i do love the previous clanrats because of the customization and frankly i like how stout and goofy they are (also they're faster to paint because of the less detail)
the big question is if the rumors about eshin models getting updated are true because some of those models are reaching eldar levels of old

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

There's an 8th Edition?! I stopped following the sales driven Churn in the 90s, have done my own thing and am I'm still enjoying playing 3rd-4th edition even today. Lets hope GW doesnt keep shitting out even more editions every couple of years, right? What are your experiences with in-game moral and ethical dilemmas and players saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave"?

I feel as though a lot of GMs' attempts at in-game moral and ethical dilemmas are unwittingly sabotaged by adventure inertia and players' desire to avoid saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave."

The way I usually see it structured, a bunch of antagonists stir up trouble. The PCs agree to help the locals. The party investigates some dangerous place or situation. Then, at the very end of the adventure, the PCs see that the antagonists have some vaguely justifiable reason for causing trouble.

The above structure is perfectly fine (and indeed, I have used it many times myself as a GM), but where things get janky is when the antagonists sincerely plea for the PCs to just turn around and leave, and the GM earnestly expects this to be an option that should be seriously taken into consideration.

I have never, ever seen this happen, for understandable reasons. Very, very few players want to say, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave." It is much more common for the players and their PCs either work out a compromise with major concessions from the antagonists, beat up the antagonists, or both (i.e. beat up, restrain, work out compromise and major concessions from position of power).

Here is the problem. You're presenting with the options of:
1. Continue to play the game
2. End the game early with an unsatisfactory ending. Also arguably undo all their progress

Let's ignore that most people playing D&D don't really come here to deal with your philosophy and ethics 101 moral dilemmas.

What you want to do is give them two (or more) options that allow the story to still keep going. Or if it's the end of the story - to choose how it ends. But the key to both of those it that it needs to be satisfying.

And this is the problem with the "we turn around and leave" idea. Leaving is giving up. It's quitting. And your players didn't show up to quit. So think of a solution that's not "okay we quit" because that's never going to be the choice they make.
