I have never wargamed before, but have recently gotten into 30k. I have 50 tac marines, 5 command sprues, the heavy weapon upgrade, disintegreator upgrade, a rhino, and ranged leviathan dreadnought. I also have 10 crimson paladins and some equipment for vets running combimeltas. I don't want to buy anymore plastic gold for a few months, and was wondering what setup would be best for this in the meantime?

Brother I just got here the fuck are you talking about. Also it's not my fault that Infernals are the best splat and puts all other splats to shame especially Solars.

My opinion on the Realm is that fucking around on the Blessed Islands is probably a bad idea unless you have a solid game plan and are higher essence but it also just depends on what you're doing. Reaction time is measured in days instead of weeks or months for those places really far from the Blessed Islands. A solaroid who thinks they can't lose is just setting themselves up for disaster. Depending on where on the Blessed Islands the reaction time could be measured in under an hour if not immediate, like if you fuck around in the cities.

It's the place for spy games or the end game, although you can do plenty more with it. I personally think a Suicide Squad or Tournament arc would be interesting but that's me.
>>
>>97270732
>days
Faster, if they're on the ball and an instant message went out. In 1e/2e, airships are something the Blessed Isle's chapterhouses might still have access to and the Realm's more common models can go up to 200mph with a Dragonblooded sailor piloting them. With the spacing between the two chapterhouses they could get anywhere on the Isle in hours. In the case where astrology is in play, response time could actually be negative - and astrology is much more likely to pin you down on the Blessed Isle, because the Convention on the Center employs every Chosen of Secrets it can get it's hands on (and Chejop can get his hands on a lot), and because it's much easier to arrange thaumaturgic astrology when you have control over the locals.

In 3e the Wyld Hunt isn't an overarching organisation, just the name for 'when Dragonblood group up and hunt Anathema', so reaction speed on the Isle is anywhere from nothing (if nobody cares) to negative (if a Sidereal cares).
>>
>>97270789
Now THIS is worthy of being called wank. It's like the Navy seals copypasta, and absolutely something that shouldn't be working in a crumbling realm.
>>
>>97270846
I don't know, it doesn't come across as that wank to me. Even if they can get there fast it's A: The Blessed Islands B: Sidereal territory so people who can see the future come into play and C: I want my end game areas to take over. C isn't really possible if a Solar can just solo or do what they want on the Blessed Islands.

Now a circle of five who are playing it smart or a circle of high essence solars who want to wreck shit with the resources they have at their disposal? That's something different. Also, as far as I remember at least, the first thing they do is information gathering. If they detect a circle of five solars all going bonfire I imagine they'll assume that that place is already fucked and just divert a ton of resources to spying and watching them and all that good stuff.

Not really sure what to say honestly. I know it's a crumbling realm but the Blessed Islands always came across as they're home base. I don't remember reading anything that made it seem like it'd be easy to take over. Unless, well, you can sneak into that Realm Defense Grid.
>>
>>97270846
The point of the Realm's current state isn't that the Dragon-Blooded never ever matter, it's just that they can matter to whatever extent fits the campaign. Solars can plausibly get up to all kinds of shenanigans without any response from the Realm, but there can also be one hell of a response if those shenanigans are a big enough problem for someone who matters. The Realm heading towards a civil war doesn't remove DBs as a credible threat to any given Circle of Solars, it just means that they aren't an immediate and inevitable threat to each and every Circle of Solars.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Just use the OSE srd
>>
For all its shortcomings in the censorship department, I think Dolmenwood mostly does well to add to the B/X base with clarifications, some from AD&D. For someone like me who is too autistic to organically fill in the blanks left in the rules, it's great material. The SRD is a bit messy, but at least it is easy to navigate (and thus it is easy to cherrypick the additions). It specifies the weight of misc. adventuring gear as well as things adventurers are capable of (thus preventing mudcore slowdown of play). However it still does not complete the wilderness game or add a complete domain game.
>>
>>97266427
Go with OSE. The best gateway into OS D&D. This general will try to convince you otherwise as it is popular and therefore bad

Christmas edition

▶What is Kingdom Death?
Kingdom Death is a tabletop miniature brand stared by Adam Poots and operated by himself and his Team that later spun off into a miniature based bored game funded by two very successful Kickstarter campaigns.

▶What is Kingdom Death: Monster?
Monster is a Nightmare Horror cooperative boss battler/miniature hobby game for 1-4 players about hope in a strange world of bizarre monstrosities and perpetually darkness. Players take on the role of survivors that band together to form a settlement, fighting monsters, crafting weapons and gear, and developing their civilization to ensure survival from generation to generation.

Prologue Narration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNLc8dHv0Ac

The Game is broken up into 3 phases:
1. During your Hunt Phase your band of survivors traverse the world of KD in pursuit of their quarry.
2. After successfully tracking your quarry you will begin the Showdown Phase, where you must fell these horrific creatures in order to acquire precious resources.
3. After the battle, your survivors wander home with loot in hand to begin the Settlement Phase. Arm yourself by developing new weapons and bizarre structures to prepare for next year's hunt.

Nope. And honestly, I think another reason the expansions are delayed so much and content comes at a snail's pace is because Poots doesn't want KDM to end. It's his baby and without it, he (and KDM) will drift into obscurity and irrelevance.
>>
>>97269759
Well, pinups are not for Monster even tho some have promo cards. But yeah, it's his life now. Pretty good imo. Other than that, I can see licensed 3rd party studios making vidya, ttrpgs, etcetc.
>>
Every time I hunt spidicules I regret it. My best survivor has two broken legs now from the pit, all because he stole my survivor with tumble who WOULD HAVE been the event revealer right before I rolled the pit, and now since i only had 3 survivors I had to push everyone to get through the forest wants what it wants and the broken leg guy's starting the showdown with 3 bleeding tokens. FUCK SPIDICULES
>>
>>97270083
Well, aftermath the bleeding tokens didn't really matter but I'm still pseudo retiring the survivor as murder bait and breeding bitch. A shame, since he was pretty promising with all 3 people of the stars abilities and +1 accuracy. I probably could work around 3 movement (ESPECIALLY IF I COULD EVER FUCKING FIND CHOREIA), i have other promising children.
>>
>>97270211
The only thing I houserule on this game is Intimacy
I use Intimacy 1000x times more than say Courage, and I don't have an Intimacy leveling up
Fuck that nigger
This bitch I had it's on her EIGHT offspring
If you are going to literally gamble your life every single time you intimacy, you sure as hell deserve some bonus for surviving over and over and over on that task
At this point in the game my survivors have more chance of dying from Intimacy than showdown

I saw a YouTube series once where two guys would use DM pack emulators to simulate a sealed pool of the first expansion and play a few games with each other. Then instead of creating an entirely new pool, they would instead get a pool from the second expansion, add the two pools together and play with decks created like that. So on for the third expansion, the fourth etc.
Do you think it would be fun to do something like this with another acg? And instead of two random dudes, it's a weekly tournament. Basically going through the history of a game.
Does this post make sense? I might be too tired

>>
>>97270291
That sounds so fun. I played ScoreZ from the first set to the last, and it would be wild to go through that journey again using cards that were good at the time but were powercrept into irrelevance down the road.
A real headache, though, would be implementing the errata/ban/restricted along the way since the final CRD has been etched into my mind for over 20 years now.

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>You really want Janissary Training on your Captain so they can take Heavy weapons. As is all it's got is an accurate semi-auto rifle/polearm.
Good for later.
>Shotgun/Shield Azebs are an option, but their main strength is the cheap Jezzail/Alch Ammo loadout.
The skirmishers role is to support the captain closeup as he moves around the field. They are a mobile firebase/magnet so my shooters can shoot reliably.
>You also want to squeeze a muscial instrument Azeb in there somewhere as Dashes can win games.
Planned for that later.
>Jannies are fine, although they can take a Heavy melee weapon as they're Strong.
Another later plan.
>And with how much you need to spend on a Bull, you really want to have it from the start and get it promoted ASAP.
I simply can not justify cutting out both azebs and a jannisary for one big fire magnet. At early campaign, 3 activations is simply too good to surrender for one larger blow.

This is quite literally what happened here anon.
What I meant is that 1) you don't get to blame anyone for "making political statements" if you brought politics where they don't fucking belong in the first place and 2) if said politics consist mostly of posting racist jokes and memes about being muh based and tradpilled, it's barely even a coherent political philosophy

Also please don't get me wrong, more recent decisions of the devs concerning their business practices are a separate case altogether and are indeed questionable. But that's not why plenty of people got a hateboner for TC in the first place (and this is not political either)

thanks a bunch!

Couple more things, does the game... "flow" well? Is there always different things to do, or is it the usual "activate my strongest unit and shoot the enemy's unactivated strongest unit"?

And can you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or if some random bad stuff happens early on, you are just in for 90 minutes of losing right from the start?

And how does the game feel on the table, I mean... most games I have played are on the skirmish level and have that feeling of "this guy is behind this barrel so he gets a cover bonus, meanwhile this guy is aiming for an extra to hit bonus", from the couple of games I have seen SWL is a more "high level" with entire units doing things - which could be fine, but I am worried about the "granularity" of the game... like... like the units being sort of abstracted with the "only move the squad leader" and "everyone does the same thing" and the other models in a unit basically being tokens, window dressing, if that makes sense?

This is one of my pet peeves with 40k, it is a game where the models "don't matter", it feels like in 40k you could draw a couple of blobs/rectangles on paper and just precisely position/measure them in a way to maximize your shots without really having to put models on the table. Especially with competitive table setups it boils down to geometry and math...

>does the game flow well
In my experience, as long as the result of the game isn't a foregone conclusion, absolutely. Playing Legion is almost constant tension, action, rolling, planning and reacting. Every activation can change the state of the game, requiring you to adjust your plans. The only down time in Legion is when your opponent is thinking and when you're moving filler units.
>And can you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or if some random bad stuff happens early on, you are just in for 90 minutes of losing right from the start?
You can, definitely. I recently had a game where my opponent killed most of my army, but I managed to win by knocking one of his b1 squads off an objective in the last activation. Or, winning with exactly 1 b1 on the board because I scored more on turns 2-4.
>other models in a unit basically being tokens, window dressing
Nope, where you put your non-leader minis does matter. For one, only minis that can draw line of sight to an enemy can shoot them. Two, you can bodyblock enemy squads and vehicles by spreading out your squads. Furthermore, enemy can only kill as many minis as they can see in their shooting attacks, so hiding your boys can limit enemy killing power.

This is always meaningless and reductive. You can easily say humans are just uppity self important shaved apes and not much else in reality. You can then go on and on about how special humans are, but deep down it's just monkey shit dialed up. In the end, it is nothing but goalpost moving and posturing.

Every sapient species is going to inevitably share common traits. Or do you throw a fit too somehow, that most animals have sex? Most living beings have eyes and limbs? If something not human dies when it is injured enough is that also ripping off humans then?

There are animals that do all of those things IRL

Humans in the constellation of species how tolkien used them are the newest one.
But other authors and even tolkien himself failed to use that dynamic.
Humanity overall should behave like toddlers, compared to something like elves. Unhinged little things, with a lack of higher reasoning.
Yet toddlers are curious and have a lot of potential so humanities strength should be maturing into the ultimate beings. But they have yet to get there and no clue that they even could.

Magic should be rare, mysterious, superstitious. It should take time to use and be exhausting to cast

When did fantasy magic and wizards turn in Avatar the Last Airbender shooting fire and lightning out their assholes?

>Magic should be rare, mysterious, superstitious. It should take time to use and be exhausting to cast
Medieval age people cast tiny spells in their daily lives all the time. Women used their own vaginas as their magical talismans when warding their cattle from envious neighbours, wolves or forest spirits.

>You can also go the opposite direction with "nobody's a wizard, everyone can use magic" where there is no class with innate capability to use spells and they're purely a thing of relic and ritual that anyone with the knowledge and access can use.
The true wizards by this point would be the geniuses who make the most out of what is available. Innovators, visionaries, masters, etc.
