Orcs & Goblins were always a joke army until this edition. In large part because of Animosity. If you ever won it was by accident. I'm not a fan of how they play now because there's not enough orcy or gobliny flavor and impetuous is easily dealt with but I'll take being able to play and win with orcs over not.
>>
>>97249037
Also I will add that if you want to kind of know how playing with Animosity felt like, you can try playing with Trolls and see how bad it is to roll for Stupidity. This is why you will never see Trolls on the table. They are simply not fun to play because you fail your roll and then just aren't able to do anything with the unit the entire turn. It just isn't fun or interesting.

People never truly found satisfying the animosity rules, it either slowed down the game or it did nothing, and the theoretical counterbalancing discount was never felt because it wasn't some kind of tradeoff you could choose during listbuilding.

In order for animosity to work the rules would need to be WAY more dynamic, but that's not the type of game this is.

Honestly my autism is hurting as I am picking up Orcs, but knowing they got such a major buff makes me feel like im hopping on to them just cause.

Previously: https://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/96936967/

When last we met, we made G.E.T.S. (Generally Entertaining Team-built System). Thus far, it seems to be a fairly minimalist system.

Now, we shall make our first setting for this system.

If your proposed idea gets doubles, it is canonized. Any canon characters, worldbuilding, themes, et cetera can be modified (but not outright contradicted or discarded) by triples, quadruples, et cetera.

Let us continue.

I hate his strong female NPCs, his attempts at a Scottish accent, and the high frequency of NPCs who are described as non-binary or gender-fluid before they've even been introduced, as if that's something you can tell by looking at them. Infrequent to say the least.

I never followed anything he did.
I think I watched the first episode of "Critical Roll", and found it boring and a little sad.
Somebody joined our 5e group because he watched it.
I painted him a miniature for his character, but then the 'rona palaver happened and I never saw him in person again.

That’s nerd shit. If I’m halfway through a movie and it sucks I’m turning it off. I’m not getting paid by the movie studios, I’m supposed to be giving a review and if I think it sucks I’m going to be honest about it rather than a cuck who thinks being a “critic” is a serious endeavor

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

Check out One More Quest. I haven't played it but it seems to have a similar silly tone and play style to the board game Dungeon Fighter (there's a bullseye board, you throw the dice and the results are better the closer it gets to the center. You also have various limitations on your throw depending on the skill you're using).
I also played Dread once and it's fun for horror one shots.

I know that I am shouting into the wind at this point however I continue.

Here is what I did come up with after some play testing.

Game is played with 2 cup and 1 ball (small aluminum one) however it be better to bring 5 or more of these balls.

Every enemy has a power rating and so does the PC.

For example lets say a expert warrior has a power level of 7 while a ogre is 9 so

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

I made a one-page "dungeon" for DCC
It's more of a side quest, but feel free to tell me what you think.
It was originally written as a solo thief adventure, but it should work fine with 2 or 3 people as well.

What are examples of kaiju-like monsters in first decade D&D? I'm thinking something less powerful than the tarrasque but more powerful than a Tyrannosaurus rex. Ought to be fun to use them in domain play, if one gives them concrete abilities to damage structures and "mass kill" civilians and standard troops.

Nothing strictly first decade comes to my mind, but if you are willing to make an exception for Gygax (pbuh), you have "gargantuan apes" in WG6 Isle of the Ape, basically King Kong, and "gargantuas" in Oriental Adventures, which are essentially humanoid, insectoid, or reptilian kaiju. The Companion set also has a monster called gargantua, but it's just an algorithm to increasing a monster's size, HD to 8×. If I remember correctly, ACKS has better rules for scaling creatures up and down. Th Island of the Ape Gargantuan Apes have specific rules for their attacks acting like battering rams

Would love to share some YTers I like to use for inspiration. Looking for anyone you find helpful. Preferably smaller creators and not restricted to 5e. I’ll submit three that I really enjoy while I’m doing prep

First I’ll submit is Desk and Dorks. The channel is made by a medieval historian and combines his knowledge of subjects to enhance games.

I particularly like his take on Bronze Age fantasy and building better town guards

I like his general leanings, the "punctual and fast" analysis style and the fact he goes on his way to review obscure ttrpgs, however i would like for him to go with analysis on more established and even older rule systems instead of itch.io tier shovelware or meme games nobody will remember anything about 5 seconds about discovering them.

I would recommend game geeks rpg, but it looks like he quit making videos entirely. Also, his wife got involved and ended up pushing reviews of stuff outside of the norm he did.

Not entirely /tg/, but william srd used to be good for reviews of old systems and games based on them, but he just started sperging out over gygax being problematic and people who dislike 5th edition one day. Quite a few of his videos just sperg out about politics now.

Assuming you can only make surface level opinions without experience is itself a surface level opinion. Also, assuming that it's silly to discuss TTRPG mechanics is also shallow. You're a shallow guy.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

Everyone obviously has their own personal opinions, but as a general rule 1, 3, 5, Generations, and Insurrection are considered bad by the general populace, while 2, 4, 6, and First Contact are considered good.

Galaxy Quest is obviously good; Nemesis is obviously bad, so inserting Galaxy Quest preserves a trend that had already been observed for decades by that point.

Once you get to the Kelvinverse I think broadly speaking people will agree that the 2009 movie is a lackluster Trek film but a serviceable sci-fi action movie that did its job of getting people interested in Star Trek again.

Into Darkness is 9/11 Trutherism: the Movie on top of the problems surrounding it trying to recapture the Khan magic with precisely the wrong actor cast as Khan. Benedict Cumberbatch isn't even *bad* as Khan, he just absolutely should not have been him.

Star Trek Beyond is good, with the new actors all firmly settled into their roles, everyone getting a chance to shine, and on a personal note watching it literally made me a better person due to my overall relationship with Trekkies up until that point.

Note that even though some of these movies are "bad", though, they can still be fun to watch. Search for Spock is great; I love Kruge as a villain. And I will die on the hill that Trek V has three good scenes, and while it's bad it is never *boring*, which is more than can be said for Trek 1 or Insurrection.

Trek 1 is best described as a movie that wants very, very badly to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, without actually understanding what makes that movie a good one.
>>

>>
>>97242723
Ferengi are like the only interesting alien in star trek.
Maybe klingons when the writers remember that you need something else beside warriors to make a civilization.
>>
Writers who primarily write fantasy fiction should simply not be creating alien races. They're too concerned with things like "how will the reader feel" "how well do they work in interactive scenes" and stupid bullshit that has nothing to do with sci-fi. Aliens should be designed from a sci-fi fantastical point of view. Their physiology and behavior should stem primarily from the thought "what would intelligent life look like on another world" and not "what should intelligent life look like to casual players?". This is just another example of fantasy writers being unintelligent hacks who are incapable of true imagination. Everything has to be carefully crammed into a little box that they decided has to be based on a specific theme and genre created in the 20th century.
