I play games with/run games for my friends. Why on earth would I intentionally make my friends play the most miserable, pointless, boring dungeon ever penned by one of the worst ttrpg designers ever to live?

To weed out the self-righteous hipsters who hate adventure and just want a vapid therapy session from every game

How would you humanize enemy mooks even if the players have to put them down at the end of day? How do you make it so that players leaving piles of corpses in their wake is not a trivial matter?

>>97384224
Everytime an enemy dies, you stop the combat to read a short obituary about the fallen, what was their childhood, what they did before becoming an armed mook, what aspirations were cut short, whom they left grieving.
Do this enough times and players will think of non-lethal solutions really fast.
>>
Consequences.
Warrant for the arrest of the adventurers murdering law enforcement.
Memorial placards of lost military.
Increased recruitment drives taking any able bodied people regardless of interest.
Suddenly that village they saved has lost all men 13 and older.
That kid they saved? Killed in action.

>>
>>97384682
That's the player's choice of course. It's simply a tool that makes the mook seem more real and alive.

It fucking sucks.
Long live V20.

I'm mostly confused about the way the combat round is ordered and what characters can and can't do. It seems like each character in combat is supposed to make different contest rolls at different stages, but the rules don't specify how many rolls a character can/should make per round. It also gets fucky when you have to deal with multiple opponents. Assume you're in a melee combat with multiple opponents and are being shot at by ranged attackers:
>characters already in melee go first.
You roll your relevant melee dice pool and split your successes among your opponents. Right off the bat is the issue of ordering. You'd like to know how many successes each opponent got so you can allocate your dice accordingly, but since combat is supposed to be simultaneous it doesn't make sense for the opponents to have already rolled before you. Is the Storyteller supposed to roll the enemy attacks first, or is the player supposed to guess how they should divide their successes?
>Next, ranged attacks go off
Now, you've already rolled your melee pool. Can you now also make a Dodge roll to contest any ranged attackers, or was that something you were supposed to decide at the beginning of the round? The rules don't explicitly define what all a character can do in a given round, so there's no answer to this question.
>Lastly, characters entering melee this round act
So let's say another enemy enters and attacks you with a melee weapon. Do you then make another Melee or Dodge roll to contest them, or are you supposed to use the remaining successes from your first Melee/Dodge roll (assuming you still remember the result)?
The game has literally nothing to clearly define how much characters can do on their turn. No movement rules. The combat in this game barely works, with the authors leaving a lot up to Storyteller fiat which ironically makes the game much more complicated and confusing than if they just wrote a solid ruleset.
>>
>>97384510
Can always steal shit from other games about initiative order and what actuals players can do and can't. There's a combat supplement iirc that gives you a better defined combat ruleset.

I'd argue Werewolf is more beginner friendly particularly for the GM because it's the game where combat is expected fairly regularly and it feels good popping off Gifts. The system still has solid roleplaying mechanics too even with the focus on ripping and tearing.

Vampire at its best is much more social and the combat is basically always clunky unless you're mowing down mooks at a higher level. Also it's much closer to what people will think of when it comes to "you're playing a Vampire". Werewolf is a game where you're kind of an eco-terrorist and a ton of the lore and abilities even at a basic level will leave newbies to WoD asking "What does this have to do with being a Werewolf?"

I love both games. WoD is wonderful and gonzo in a way that you can't really recapture anymore (I'm blanking on any nu-lore that doesn't suck). Avoid the newest editions, go with the 20th Anniversary.
>>
>>97384625
You sort of have to know a lot of lore to even make a Werewolf PC don't you?
>>
>>97384754
I guess. Breed is if you want to be a human-born, wolf-born, or the literally twisted sterile spawn of two werewolves Metis. Only the latter requires a bit more information on what the hell is going on.
Tribe: although breaking or subverting the stereotypes of the tribes can go in a million directions, you really can sum them up in a couple sentences each to go from there. Tribe is as much a class as it is your race since so many Gifts are tied to them.
Auspice: the only lore you'd need on character creation here would be that it's the phase of the moon you're most attuned to and first shapeshifted under, and it determines your overall role as a Garou (the other term for Werewolf that players should get use to). Basically your class.

it's very clunky in some places, but it has something very positive for what you want.
The "metaphysics" of the game is that things work how people think they work. That is, the majority belief holds true and this can vary from region to region (someone who has learned a magical practise in one region can carry it to another and use it there, but the reigning metaphysics will change). That means you can have characters from one region turn up in another and go "wow this place is strange, even the magic is weird, why are there so few djinni here? why are their mages so strange?" and have mechanical backing to that. Since world travel is difficult and slow, it's not a setting and era where people can easily compare notes and do that "unified theory of magic" thing that happens in some modern D&D games.

well honestly I did have my complaints but I held back on saying it solely because we had so many complaints about stuff before, but it was said anyways by others about how it's hard to distinguish characters with pretty much only the tech tree since we stripped out the other half of the CYOA.

I still think it's serviceable even if it ain't the top 50% of CYOA's we've used in the past.

>how it's hard to distinguish characters with pretty much only the tech tree
Which is why we have flavour and personality. Also friend bonuses, those are fun.
>>
>>97384417
I mean it's a lot of leveraging for what little we have. The builds we have are fine but there is only so far you can go on all the tech branches. I think the only ones really not touched on yet are vehicles and colossal robots, or I guess you can also say the different power sources can technically make more combinations/distinctions between builds.

I feel like there should be Hyperborean technology remnants, they need somewhere to get the Memory guns and such, but because most of it is psychically radioactive they keep most of it in deep storage with Top Men. Frenopolis is a gamified tetragrammaton clothed in the memetic zeitgeist.

This thread is for discussion and development logging.

It's easiest to learn with YGO/MTG experience.

It's not for sale, but you can request a free physical 2-player 90 card set by following the instructions in the description of this video:
https://youtu.be/oPoBUoagO_k
(No payment or identifying info required)

Playmats have arrived and will be sent out with the playtesting kits. Anyone who already received a set with the shipping label name "Current Resident" should be receiving one by 1/10/26. If your shipping label was not sent to "Current Resident", email or DM me on telegram so I can send you one.

the basic types will still exist:
Entities, Memes, Structures (like mtg creatures, sorceries, artifacts etc)

The typing done in both pokemon and magic is very loosely defined, for example a card being blue (mtg) or green (pokemon) is only a very loose indication of what its interaction scope might be in-game, mtg especially is filled with exceptions, and pokemon doesn't even try (their typing is arbitrary, like YGO).

In frenopolis, the color-typing is defined in terms of the board itself. so if you know a card's color, you will know exactly its interaction scope.

the only change here is I don't want to limit myself to "technology" themed or loosely related images for the blue color (for example). The blue color will be any image/meme that looks like it has an effect that operates in/between the Earth and Air elements, which correspond to zones (Archive, Void), and types (Structures, Memes, Narrative).

see this image:
>>97282597

for example, all i'm experimenting with is removing the term "alchemy" from orange. Now it will just be "Orange". everything else stays the same.

I like mark 4 heads, primaris basically have mark 4 heads. Subtly different but basically. I even used a primaris librarian head and the back piece of a grey knights torso once to make a helmeted mark 4 librarian.

I like mark 7 heads too. And 6, and so on.

So nah don't care, what I dislike about primaris armour is the low neck and high midriff, the kneepads, the crappy backpack with a big circle on it... And of course the slightly too human proportions - the new regular marine proportions seen on chaos marines and Deathwatch veterans are kino. Half a head shorter than primaris, hitting a sweet spot where they look good but I can imagine them inhumanly broad under their armour.

Tons of them, but what do you want?

If you want some random recs, then Daniel King (for high level game review), Andras Toth (for bombastic coaching kind of advice but less conceited), Daniel Naroditsky (RIP) for educational stomping on lower rated players but in a nice way, and the Aman Hambleton half of Chessbrah for same at a much lower level (Building Habits series especially if you're new.)

Chess Dojo is good for like "chess talk radio" stuff as long as they aren't interviewing people (I think they suck as interviewers, but if it's just the three of them chatting it's fun to listen to) and the absolute best if you want computer-free real time slow analysis of stuff like the candidates tournament, especially as a lot of the "official" coverages has gotten worse, these guy have become my favorite thing to watch to understand wtf just happened in the big tournaments when they actually cover them (just Candidates and World Championship usually).

Those are some personal favorites, but there are a lot of people out there, and I'd put GothamChess as like my 3rd? least favorite. Maybe not that bad, because like I said there's a lot, but I don't remember all the crap.

Also, be aware that Pegasus Chess is a cheater/scam artist who is just making stuff up for clickbait and doesn't actually know what he's talking about, so stay away from those.

Thanks for the recs.

I think Danya's videos/streams are exactly what I'm looking for, but he's no longer with us sadly. I'm a newer player, hovering around 500, so that kind of "this is what beginners usually play, this is what you should be playing, this is how you punish these mistakes" are very valuable to me. But for the future I think I'll check out Andras Toth and Chess Dojo.

For now, I'd recommend two other things:

John Bartholomew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao9iOeK_jvU

John might be a bit too chill for some people, but I can't imagine anyone calling him conceited, and he's very educational.

Chess Brah's building habits: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8N8j2e7RpPnpqbISqi1SJ9_wrnNU3rEm
