What are your experiences with in-game moral and ethical dilemmas and players saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave"?

I feel as though a lot of GMs' attempts at in-game moral and ethical dilemmas are unwittingly sabotaged by adventure inertia and players' desire to avoid saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave."

The way I usually see it structured, a bunch of antagonists stir up trouble. The PCs agree to help the locals. The party investigates some dangerous place or situation. Then, at the very end of the adventure, the PCs see that the antagonists have some vaguely justifiable reason for causing trouble.

The above structure is perfectly fine (and indeed, I have used it many times myself as a GM), but where things get janky is when the antagonists sincerely plea for the PCs to just turn around and leave, and the GM earnestly expects this to be an option that should be seriously taken into consideration.

I have never, ever seen this happen, for understandable reasons. Very, very few players want to say, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave." It is much more common for the players and their PCs either work out a compromise with major concessions from the antagonists, beat up the antagonists, or both (i.e. beat up, restrain, work out compromise and major concessions from position of power).

My experience is any time I try to put the party in a scenario which might question their morals or have them ask “what is the right thing to do” in any way, they just completely walk away from the issue, even if the issue in question is the whole point of the session/campaign, which they agreed to ahead of time. This has led to multiple occasions where the party has effectively held the session hostage by refusing to make a choice and progress unless I provide them a third option which lets them resolve the scenario without having to make an uncomfortable decision. Sometimes I cave to keep things going, and sometimes I don’t and just have them suffer the consequences of indecision.

I recently ran a Christmas session of Star Wars SAGA. The basic premise is the party came to a village of people who were effectively Christmas elves. They were being threatened by bandits, and the party had to train up the militia to fight them off. I asked the players a week in advance which option they wanted to use to defend the village, and “train them to defend themselves” was the choice that everyone agreed on.

Come time for the actual session, two of the players decide they are now uncomfortable putting the villagers in danger. So, when it comes time for the ‘rallying speech’, one of the players whips out a blaster and domes an old woman with a stun shot when she objected to their plan, and then called everyone who is uncomfortable with this a coward who doesn’t have what it takes to fight. This was followed up by the second player putting the final nail in the coffin by telling all the villagers the plan was to use them as bait. Unsurprisingly, none of the villagers trusted the party enough to accept any training from them.

These two players then proceeded to give me grief afterwards when I said that, with none of the militia having been trained up, the bandits rolled into town, killed anyone who couldn’t run, and burned down half the buildings.

There's this idea that there's a barrier to popularity in complexity; and that the simpler a game is the more money it's going to make. Not only is this completely wrong, they're often stupidly tearing out most of the interesting systems and mechanics and leaving behind dull ones because they weren't complicated.

RED thankfully didn't make this mistake, not entirely. It's simpler, but there's plenty going on to keep people interested without also being in modifier hell (though I feel a lot of GMs I've played with are terrified of applying circumstantial modifiers, so it's whatever). There are other flaws in the system, but the bones are good and you can build it up where it needs bulk.

Well those are two roles that would be very unsatisfying if you made them much more granular. That said they're not quite as insubstantial as they seem.

Charismatic Impact is actually crunchier than it might immediately appear; I just find GMs don't tend to pay enough attention and can sometimes make it work like mind control. Broadly its a way to scattershot assistance wherever you go; unlike Backup or an Exec's Teamwork, you can run into fans anywhere and you don't have to drag them with you. Even at rank 4 there's more going on than it would appear: Being able to play at well known Clubs necessarily gets you into all the well known club, and you're one rank away from necessarily being able to play (and thus enter) any club that's not explicitly exclusive. Otherwise you're building effectively a contact list as you make fans and can shake them down weekly (figuratively) for favors, which has the rules breakdown of "I have an ever increasing pool of NPCs that I get a favorable social roll on to just have them do shit for me". Use that smartly, and you're going to have the rockstar treatment wherever you go in the most literal sense of the word.

Similarly, Credibility has some bite to it if the GM will just play it right. Passive rumors go automatically, so the GM should be keeping you connected and assuming he's not feeding you bullshit intentionally, something is going to be useful. Even if it's not, publishing can work a variety of ways to your advantage more than just having a magazine. You can 'publish' to individual people or organizations and what you publish doesn't even need to be true. It's definitely more fluffy than all the others and more nebulous than Charismatic Impact though.

Eisensturm is a flying Atlas with dual gauss rilfes.
Though I think FWL's Shiva is pretty good as well. It also has a dual gauss configuration but on top of that also has a pulse laser one that absolutely shreds units when making ground attacks (remember that ASFs attacking ground units always count as attacking from short range, so you always get the -2 from pulses). It does have far less armor than the Eisensturm, but you get 3 Shivas at the BV of 2 Eisensturms, and regardless of the armor tye Eisensturm still gets one-shotted by an unlucky lawdart roll.

Strider you are overlooking that it is frankly insanely cheap and a bit of a zombie in the grand scheme of things thanks to C.A.S.E. and a standard engine. If you treat it like an IFV meant to transport and support BA then it does have moments to shine.

I don't particularly like trying to 'correct' people, especially since i'm not really a drawfag, but, just in my own experience, for example, if it were me, I probably wouldn't draw women with the face folds and wrinkles. They make them look a lot older. I tried removing it, and lo and behold she looks like 30 years younger to me.

Of course, it's clear you've got a good 'skill base' so the potential is there.

That stopped to be as much of an issue for me when I started to think of leveling as figuring out new shit at a dramatic moment, and not a gradual and structured process of learning.

Something along the more "cinematic" line of just making your new feature up on the spot because you're pushed harder than before, and maybe if you trace this sigil instead of that one the fire explosion will be bigger let's try spinning that's a good trick HOLY SHIT IT ACTUALLY WORKED.

Like, when a PCs levels up into their 4th-tier in six months after 30 years of being level 1, they're not that much of a different person than they were before, it is just that their abilities were pushed far enough my circumstances that they figured how to put into practice new abilities they had always been capable of.

Perpetuals are the worst thing the HH books introduced and everything about them is shit. But that story was too obviously made up even in the context of 40k's silliness. So I don't agree that it was ever a powerful metaphor for anything more than, "people really will believe the weirdest shit".

It was never directly stated that the Primarch's were clones. Heck, they were just Chapter Masters and when they got firmed up just before 2nd Ed they were always stated to be genetically engineered, so they weren't clones. Logically bits of their DNA were always taken from others.

The Imperium were literally breeding with Eldar in the RT rulebook.

Salamanders were just black guys (actually it was never explicitly painted and probably just a coincidence from the guide from the paint set but lets roll with that) and the ashen skin guys was itself an incredibly dumb retcon.

The custodes were 100% nothing because there were only four lines of text about them until fucking 8th edition.

LE2 had a beaked helmet, but literally the second marine model ever, LE10, didn't.

The Emperor being dead was always fannon that had a few bits of in-world evidence but just as much that directly contradicted it.

The Emperor's motivations were always shady, given he was literally nicked from Dune and that comes with it.
