>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,

I honestly find it more important than the minis themselves. I reached the point of buying two FDM printers so I can go with whatever terrain I wish.

Best budget rivers ive seen is taking a bit of blue fabric
>add layer of PVA
>add layer of plastic sheet (like plastic bags)
>add layer of PVA
>add layer of plastic
>etc
You can slightly twist and pinch the plastic for ripples and flow effects.
Pic slightly related but you can do a single sheet with fabric banks and then put coloured fabric underneath to change the water as needed.

So my DND group was kind of disolving, 2 out of the 4 players left because of life issues (one got a job abroad and the other one is dealing with life), to keep playing we incorporated 2 new players with not so much experience but avid watchers of Critical Role.

One of these player conditions was that we incorporate x cards to the game, she says that it makes it much more comfortable for her to know she can avoid unpleasant story elements having this tool.

I started to read a bit about it online and is this something you guys have used? In my 20 years playing I've never used this.

The mistake was not vetting people who get to sit at your table, the only people at mine are those i know and get along with and know others at my table get along with. I never had to use X cards because of that.
>>97363508
It's just used by bad faith actors who want to co-opt other people's table where everyone else is having fun. If the only person who isn't getting along and having fun is you well the problem might be you not the other people.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

If you think he's bad now, you should have seen some time ago, when for one or two years for some unknown reason all of his trolling comments would be left up, while every comment talking negatively about AD&D 2e and even most infographics about O/A/B/X/D&D would be deleted on sight. At some point, even the newbie guides were being deleted, after being left up untouched for over a year. Looking back at that period of time, it's kinda glorious that we made it through.

I think it's fine without cacti, the ground looks like some places near where I am in Australia (so no cacti).
I think you should define a path or creek running through the middle of the larger base, that little channel in the middle looks perfect for something like that. It would help break up the solid orange colour and provide some visual interest.

Is it even worth trying something like Roll20 online (with mic), or is online play kind of cumbersome? I'm a recluse and struggle socially, so I can only fathom comfortably roleplaying online. I've never played in-person, but it's just not in my comfort zone.
>>
>>97391784
>Ice Slick
>Snowshoes
I really like that combination.
It's weaker than grease since it doesn't have a DC that scales like a normal spell, instead it uses the rules for slippery surfaces and uneven footing (Balance check vs Reflex save), IIRC, which can be better or worse depending on what you are fighting, but it's still pretty damn good.
I think it also enables stuff like HIbernal Healing, which is pretty great, specially for a Druid.
>>
>>97393752
I play online using Roll 20 for the map, Gsheet for the character sheet, and Discord for rolling, using custom commands (made a Crusader macro), voice chat, and recording information on different channels.
I only know one guy from this group IRL too.
Some of the players have their character sheets inside roll 20, so they just click a spell and the attack rolls and damage rolls are all made automatically.
I dislike that because it takes away some of the flexibility from hand rolling my own sharacter sheet in gsheet but it works pretty well otherwise, a lot of stuff is pre calculated as you fill it out.
So yeah, it can get a little slot at the begining but after the first session it's not cumbersome at all in my opinion.

Love Peter Jackson portrayal, although I think he goes a little to heavy on the armor at times. Dragon's Dogma had a nice interpretation of them, clearly visually inspired by LotR films.

>>97372937
WoD's portrayal of the old Orcs was fun, but also demonstrates one of the problems with changing Orcs from a classic monster race to one that's capable of making moral choices. Cause if you do that an then try to keep all the fun barbarian raider orc tropes, you end up with something far far more problematic than just sticking to the classic always evil monsters. So yeah, kind of fun, but Orcs have been a mess since, I dunno, TBC.

In Muh Setting I have a race that are kind of the reverse of fantasy elves in some ways. They are biologically perpetual (not the only ones who are) while also being aggressive and risk-tolerant. While they're not meant to be orc-esque or savage in how they conduct themselves with these traits, it does mean that they tend to get killed by circumstance before they benefit from that lifespan. That being said, the ones that do choose the path of a violent life and make it over a century or more in age are some of the most fearsome opponents on the planet, but at the same time the average lifespan for even the normal ones is about 150.

Absolutely nothing, nothing at all. The entire thing is just a random failed artist with a thing for gore and religious aesthetics, trying to justify his indulgence and get paid for it.
None of it makes sense and none of it has to, because tasteless retards keep throwing money at a one trick hack with a hobby.
The setting is to justify the game, which is to justify the models, which is to justify the art, which is to justify the artist's creative masturbation.

This card has 2 effects, as seen on this table: >>97362543

Effect 1:
"Increase the Equilibrium of your Manifest Structures by the number of Manifest Structures."
Column (fibonacci index) 5, "stat or" (G8), with a converted fibonacci value of 13.

This is purely an Earth element effect (only operating on Structures (Earth)). This effect could appear on any of the 3 colors composed of the Earth element (Blue, Red, Yellow).

This is a passive/static effect, so its fibonacci index is incremented by 1. 5+1=6, with a total converted value of 21.

>TQ:
>What game did you expect to hate, but ended up really liking it?
TfM - played it late, thought it would be like Ark nova. The map part is pretty boring but I love the massive amount of cards and just building the engine up. It's sort of a calming game for me, where I just build my engine in peace
For sale - old, boring filler game. Besides it's betting which I'm not a fan of. Turns out it's great, all time goat. Love it.
Dominant species - people said it's long and mean. Hard to get things done and others ruin your plans etc.. One of my favorites. It's not that mean imo, st least it doesn't feel that way to me, maybe because of the theme. The domination calculation is simple math, no problems. It's longer since it's also best with more players but it doesn't feel long.

>What game did you expect to love, but endet up hating it?
Ark nova - animals, lot's of cards, heavy, everyone in the group loved it. It's not that interesting, slow cycling through the cards. Even more solo than TfM but with no engine building fun.
Spirit island - everyone loved it, heavy coop with asymetry. Maybe because it's coop but it's very boring. Like pandemic, enemy spreads and you play a couple of cards to contain them. The cards are also not that exciting.

I don't mind it all that much, but it depends on what kind of downtime.
This all opens a very interesting topic relevant to disagreements in game evaluation, "How do you approach [game]?". Like in the example, if you play Agricola Gaia Project just from your gut, you'll have a bad time. Similarly, if you overanalyze and try to strategize Diamant or Resistance, you'll have a tedious and frustrating game. That is not exclusive to weight, I'd argue Ra gets worse when you math out probabilities and Chinatown sucks if you go deeper than only roughly crunching the numbers before taking a deal.
And it's hard to approach a game you've tried and found shit once again from a different angle. Time is too precious for most of us.

Very interesting topic

>Perfect Draw
Either gets his father's "might makes right" worldview drilled into him so he can take over his father's business someday, or visits his sickly younger sister in the hospital.

>Digimon Digital Adventures 1.4, game a
We haven't had any real downtime, but if we did the human would spend his time playing MMOs and the digimon would spend her time practicing how to stab people better.

>Digimon Digital Adventures 2e
Again, no real downtime in this game cause of the setup, but the human plays basketball (he's 6 feet tall in japan since he's a half-breed) and the digimon would probably get bored and start eating anything that resembled food.

>Digimon Digital Adventures 1.4, game b
Again, no real downtime, but the human would probably watch whatever your average 15 year old girl in 1999 was watching and the digimon would probably try to keep the more rambunctious members of the party out of trouble.
