skimpy armor thread?
>>
>>97361131
If I wanted sexy I'd rather just include sexy rogue types who wear no armor at all but instead rely on their dexterity or some kind of magical protection so they can go around running half naked and it still makes enough sense to not break immersion too bad. Or go with the barbarian aesthetic who dont wear because... they just dont.

Having chicks in bikini heavy armor and the game treating them as having actual heavy armor breaks immersion and verisimilitude etc. too bad for me.

Holy shit. How often are you people describing the minutia of what a person's armor looks like. "She's wearing brigandine and has red hair and a gaunt, angular face." Boom done. That is all the character description you need to give.

The attack and defense modes are clunky, and the powers are just carbon copies of spells. The auto-scaling nature of augments doesn't exist yet, just some formally acknowledged "power chains" that aren't actually directly spelled out in the book (only the webpages). Honestly, even the XPH didn't really figure augments in fully, and it leads to some legacy issues because of it (Greater Teleport should really just be a Teleport augment and not a distinct power, for example). Because of the lazy rebranding of psionics at this point, it's just wizard but annoying and shitty, with bizarre rules that nobody likes such as each discipline having a different casting stat. Some people like to discuss the persistent power feat, but I see very little other reference to it, not counting the webpage content (sardior et al).

I feel like I remember fighting this list like... a year ago. I was playing FEC and wanted to perish. (Did win) Once the Morbhegs snuck through, though Ushoran was hiding behind a fucking wall the whole time until he eventually had to advance to try and take an objective. Pulled ahead by just a few points, it was like pulling fucking teeth I swear.

3 clan rats should be fine, Stormfiends I think are solid and will be able to just take any points from people easily, the rattling gunners are going to be disgusting and basically will keep your board safe. Only catch being if there's lots of terrain for cover or anything that can teleport into your backline to eat you alive.

I'm seriously asking you to read the rules for Magic the Gathering Pokemon and YuGiOh and you would find 99% of the effects possible in a card game. Seriously.
>>
>>97371180
It's rude to request something so demanding from people. I regularly play only 4 games and it'd take multiple hours to gather a list like that with just that limited knowledge. Also, with the context of the broader ruleset of each game taken into consideration those effects can mean very much different things in each game.
In retrospect I take back my comment about a bot doing it for you. It'd do a very poor job at it. It won't get the intricacies of the rulebook of each game.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Should an elven wizard be more powerful on average than a human one? Explain your answer.

>>
>>97369507
My players enjoy the racial restrictions and intriciaties I introduced (I don't take full credit either, I played back when this concept was hard-coded into the game and thought it made sense). My players have crafted amazing stories around playing not only to their strengths but also their weaknesses. Take one adventure I had where, a player character as a Human Wizard, was the apprenctine of an older High Elven player at the table. The two spent their time adventuring, gaining knowledge, tools, items, and so forth. He capped at Level 3, which is significant for a Human to achieve when he reached his 42nd birthday (again, a remarkable achievement in my universe but he had earned this). He retired into academia and started a magical assembly for his home kindgom he home brewed, and passed away at the age of 74. The High Elven player, being only 393 at the time, attended his funeral and it was a great moment of continuity and role play (because the Human player character played as the son of his original character).
>Why are you writing so much about this?
Because I think one of the biggest elements that people have lost, and I really blame the cultural fascination around superhoes and the gradual radicalization of society where individuals can never be wrong in anything (look at any modern debate, people refuse to concede points when they are objectively proven wrong and so forth ... I don't want to go off on a tangent here) - I think what people have truly lost is a sense of adventure. and I see that in TTRPGs. People think the only way to ennjoy a roleplaying game is by constantly succeeding, constantly winning, playing only to strengths, and having 0 constraints. This is what makes TTRPGs... flavorless, boring. Imagine any adventure story you can think of that had no hardships, no limitations, no points of no return, and so forth. It simply would not be a story.

I highly encourage you to experiment with this concept at your next session!

>Humans don't live long enough to master the arcane arts.
That's a poor reason compared to straight up saying humans are just not good at using magic as elves, just as humans are not as strong as a gorilla.
I could live 300 years and I doubt I'd be as smart as geniuses like Einstein and Oppenheimer. Magical geniuses could learn magic much faster than an average human, making their lifespan angle moot.
>>
>>97369592
>That's a poor reason compared to straight up saying humans are just not good at using magic as elves, just as humans are not as strong as a gorilla.
A fair critiscism but I do make an objection, again, based on my setting that I developed along with my friends. Elves possess a natural tendency towards magic, and have a stronger racial connection to magic, however, humans possess the one thing that all other races lack, which is spirited ambition. This concept in our games is why humans push themselves to achievement. On a long enough path, humans can indeed master magic at a level similar to Elves but this comes at enormous cost to themselves. As I wrote, the greatest human wizards in my setting are, ironically, Liches. You are correct, even if humans had their lives magically extended to the same as elves, they would not reach the same level of power as, say, a 600 year old High Elven Wizard that maintained all his mental faculties (an impossibility, but we are playing hypothetical). The Human Lich, however, can tap into magic that High Elves forbid themselves to use, which can give them certain advantages in a magical duel. This is what makes the Lich an existential threat in my universe, because they break the "laws" of magic that Elves observe. Again, I have only had one player in the history of my setting ever go the path of a Lich and his character was later used as the foundation for a world-ending boss that another party killed 5 years ago. But that's getting off topic.
>>
>>97369592
>>97369635
Personally I figure not only do different people advance levels at greatly varying rates, but that everyone has a natural "cap" where their natural abilities do not allow them to level up any further

So a typical NPC might take a few months, or a few decades to advance to level 1-3, but never advance beyond that

But a PC character can potentially go from level 1 to 20 over the course of a weeks long mega dungeon crawl because of their raw potential

Very mary sueish obviously, but that is what a lot of people who play these games are looking for

>>97356728
Depends on the setting, but for standard DND I would say yes, elven wizards are on average more powerful than humans, and while maybe 1 in 1000 humans has the raw potential to become even a mid-level wizard, for elves it is more like 1-10
>>
>>97370305
>while maybe 1 in 1000 humans has the raw potential to become even a mid-level wizard, for elves it is more like 1-10

>>97371453
He might be completely serious but misremembering the time period. I believe at some point in the early modern period the go-to French flag was largely white.

Also, its hard not to observe how often the french loose despite thier largter size and them just continuing on due to the innertia of thier size. things like the italian wars, spanish succession, 100 years war. Sometimes size can be a curse. Hard to think of a major time the french state (not the french culture which was indeed a juggernaut) dominated outside of napoleon and maybe the sun king. The big medieval win Ican think of was the battle of Bouvine.

Currently toying with the idea of a low fantasy RPG set in the Wild West. The main premise would be a Luck mechanic; Every character has somewhere between 10-20 HP and about up to 50 Luck, most shots from a revolver up close can one shot a character's HP but the damage first goes to Luck. Luck can also be used to add or subtract from rolls, it is a finite resources that can only be replaced during down time (Don't have a clear idea about how yet, I have been toying with having to win a hand of poker or just get drunk).
Thoughts?

Any examples of tabletop wargames with good character vs character combat?

Im adapting a setting where its very much pulp heroes being badass and doing a tabletop version of it. I want hero vs hero or hero vs squad to matter. Just looking for inspo. Thank you everyone.
>>
>>97368672
I think having something as "evanescent" (or whatever you want to call it) as Luck be turned into basically armor is a bit of a waste thematically. Maybe some sort of karma system where when you use luck points, any cricitcal fail hits even harder ?
Something with a "push your luck" aspect, the more you push back negative effect using luck, the harder it bites you in the ass later at the worst possible time.
I like the idea of integrating poker hands or getting drunk to regain Luck, that's fun !
Also, maybe think of doing something with the fact that there are 6 bullets in a revolver and 6 sides on a D6 ? A russian roulette mechanic ?

>>97370854
I have created a game that is only 1v1 combat using handmade zines as your battle moves, where each opponent action is revealed simultaneously. Maybe it could be adapted in a tabletop format with fig and such.

Clerics having wizard-like magic powers (in the vein of D&D and dertivates) is too over the top. How can I make their abilities more subtle?

A cleric dedicated to a fire god still shouldn't be able to throw fireballs around.

that's literally the opposite of what a cleric should do

mages are from magic, which is the persian word for priests

magical powers are the powers of priests

magic is a divine power

I think paladins usually have a good balance of small but important divine powers that are used to supplement their physical abilities

This isn't really based on anything, but I always thought divine powers shouldn't be "at-will" for anyone but actual divine entities such as angels. Instead, it should require prayer or just plain getting worked up with zealous fervor, and such power scales the more manic the user's current mental state is.

Wizards can cast straight out of a book with their reagents. It's mystical, but has an element of academia/scientific methodology to it.

Divine users have to genuinely channel the divinity of their patron gods by aligning their mind and spirit with them, and that's incredibly difficult to do at all hours of the day. Rather, it comes in bursts during important moments like feeling deep compassion for the sick and injured, or righteous indignation against a wicked enemy.

Those sorts of thematic differences are important because they're character informing, rather than necessarily because the mechanics of it play out dramatically different.
