>>97281684you have to engage in combat which means a Charge, but these units will likely be coming on from the enemy backline so you're never really going to make a huge amount; Vanguard (3) becomes Doomed Heroics (6), but you still wouldn't get 3VP from Doomed Heroics more than once with that unit, because there wouldn't be any Units coming on close enough; in practice you would be making it easier to score 3VP once or perhaps twice with a former Vanguard (3) unit (which ordinarily would score nothing for removing Expendable (3) as casualties), not farming VP all game - plus with the very big Levy Troops even a WS5 T5 2+ save unit is going be 1/206 for an unsaved melee Wound or 1/108 from shooting from Levy, which is not that remote of a chance (and the full unit can put out 100 shots in a single phase); it's a humiliation waiting to occasionally happen>>97281689I've seen enough Terminator Captains go down to massed Gretchin blunderbusses over the years to know this is a dumb idea (you get nothing if you don't die in combat, including if you get shot down by Overwatch or Volley Fire, and Militia are more than capable of shooting down lone warriors)
Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session. 3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.
>>97282194>>97282249I hear your disagreements. It's interesting to see different approaches to GMing. I like your three bonus tips. Do you have any additional GM advice? I'm open to new ways of making the game better for my table.
>>97281895Railroading is using GM fiat to force a certain outcome. It's always a bad thing. Using the term railroading the way op does up there dilutes the meaning. You can have linearity in a scenario design without it being a railroad. You can have a five room dungeon, where each room leads into the next room, and there is a boss and a treasure in the last room. It is linear, but it's not a railroad unless the GM is using fiat to force specific outcomes in each room, for example making it so no matter how well you stealth roll is you always have to fight, there is no room for interesting strategy, whatever the case may be.I think that he was trying to say is a variation on what I believe for early in the campaign scenarios and one-shots, which is to start late. Don't start them in the tavern meeting the old man who gives them the map to the dungeon, start at the door to the dungeon saying "you're at the front door to the dungeon that the map you got from the old man in the tavern led to." Don't start in the briefing, start in the plane about to halo-drop into the hot zone. If possible, start in media res. This is a perfectly sensible way to start a campaign, and isn't "railroading."
I don't think there's anything wrong with your world having the internal consistency of a video game i.e. you only draw what the players need to see and make up shit from whole cloth when the unexpected happens (or you run out of prepped material). When I started out I thought statting up all the Shit That Nobody Cares About behind the scenes was important for consistency, but nobody cares about 90's style encounter tables where you roll a d100 and 80% of results are some boring mundane thing that bores people to tears. Players want to be entertained so break out the SUDDENLY if they start looking bored
OP has some good GM adviceI'm pretty sure it's a pasta or condensed into text GM advice video by some actually competent TTRPGtuber like Sethmaybe a compilation of several different videos>>97282194this post is bad GM advice
Solid advice.> 1.- Clocking actions during combatI use a 1 min hourglass, works like a charm.> 2.- DM engineYes, after the first dungeon/adventure your players know where they want to go, if not, "suddenly a dragon", or ninjas or whatever the hell makes them move.> 4 CalendarYes, I have an artificer and a wizard that make sure have enough time to craft scrolls, potions and ammo before a BIG event, they love when a scroll or well placed arrow turns a possible TPK in a steamroll; they even use hirelings for minor errands to not distract their characters> 13 Solving obstaclesYes, you should reward creativity, even when they find a way to just talk their way out of a combat encounter or tunnel around your trap infested corridor.
I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies. These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence. This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.(Continued.)
What do I need to replicate EGO from project moon?
>>97277915>>97280346It is ultimately the same d10-based dice pool game as Chronicles of Darkness in general, for good or for ill.Resource-management-wise, Deviants have no "Mana" pool. Instead, they work off 1/scene, 1/chapter, and in some cases, 1/story abilities. (Almost like D&D 4e.) However, each Clade has a method of instantly recharging abilities.Black Vans' earlier chapters introduce ways to adjust dice rolling, such as by allowing automatic success under certain conditions.>>97281142The Player's Guide to the Contagion Chronicle actually has a small section on crossing over Deviant and Hunter specifically, though this was not written by Eric Zawadzki.Eric Zawadzki did, however, write Black Vans, which has a much larger and comprehensive section on crossing over Deviant and Hunter.Comment too long. >>97276424>Secret World of Alex MackFuck, dude. I completely forgot about that show. Now that I think about it, the Demon: the Descent campaign I ran a while ago accidentally had a bunch of Pete & Pete shit in it, from taking place in a small town full of weirdos that was weirdly isolated from the rest of the world and strangely without place to seemingly everything in town being owned or manufactured by a monolithic corporation with robotic, unsettling employees. How much has my lens for perceiving World of Darkness been informed by Nickelodeon shows from the 90's?
>>97282060what is magic like? spellslots or can you just do it however you like? What level of space opera are we talking about? Only psykers like star wars and starcraft or space magic?
>>97283540As explained here >>97217944, the game cares about five "Clades," Cephalists, Chimerics, Coactives, Invasives, and Mutants. Beyond this, the game does not bother distinguishing magic and super-science from one another; they are essentially two sides of the same coin. Even in-setting, the lines between magic and super-science are very blurry. Here are some examples of various flavorings for powers: >>97242552Even then, two characters within the same Clade might have wildly different flavor. A Coactive could manipulate quantum mechanics, or they may be an outright wizard. An Invasive might be a cyborg, but they could just as easily be the bearer of a cursed blade instead.>What level of space opera are we talking about? Only psykers like star wars and starcraft or space magic?Given the sheer diversity of Clades, it is closer to a kitchen sink space fantasy setting than anything. You can play a Chimeric space druid or a Coactive space wizard just as easily as an Invasive space cyborg or a Mutant bioweapon.

Currently working on a Krark the thumbless Jund strategy inspired by Catch-22.Basically "what is good for me is good for the syndicate and everyone owns a share".So right now I am looking for cards that look like they benefit the group, but primarily benefit me, cards like wheel of fortune, cards that let the players buy into my ponzi scheme and big spells that kill anyone with kindness or just generally go well with the high stakes high variance nature of the deck. Any recommendations for cards in Jund that lets me exploit my friends for maximum profit?
> I wish we had more 4 color commanders-Andrew Swordbro, 2025
Commander would be more fun if everyone ante'd a booster pack
I think the game's entire color identity is archaic as fuck and that locking essential game mechanics behind colors was extremely retarded design that would've resulted in the instant death of any other tcg made after mtg. Green is the best color because it has reasonable access to the two most important game mechanics, ramp and draw, albeit it handles draw the way it should've been for every color from the start by making it conditional based on what the color generally tries to do (big creatures). The mechanics of the Magic are solid but the design of the color pie and colors themselves is mega shit and if it weren't for the fact it was the first tcg and has a playerbase of sunk cost pay pigs who have turned this game into their intended retirement plans Magic would've folded years ago due to how badly designed its actual color pie and mana system is. I hope someone can finally figure out to just copy Magic's rules but make a better color pie and mana system so mtg finally dies and we can all move onto playing something better.

Only reluctantly played 3e, even then our DMing and playing was old style in tone even with all those silly feats. Not sure why my friends adopted 3e rules, maybe cult of the new.I was here when people made the first osr generals. Outside of some trollish 4channers, and apparently outside of your blogger's head as he's wrongly conflating things, osr still means what it meant.Your opinionated little blogger hero doesn't get to redefine "osr" to suit his means. He's engaging in revisionism and I reject his attempt. Even if 2e was not, as in his opinion it isn't, "old school" it was and is part of osr and has been for 21 years or more. While it's nice to read him admit Cook wrote frames for modules, though unfortunately mistakenly trying to equate this with railroading, and that>such a thing isn't really different from several treasured modules released earlierhe has the rather poor and wrong opinion that>module tells you to place an encounter at a certain point in timeis bad. There's no real difference between a dm deciding to reschedule, omit or add an encounter all on his own, whether for a module or own adventure, and a dm deciding to do that based on advice from a module. It's called being clever, wise, adaptable. In a footnote he adds>I'm not arguing that the old-school method is the one true way to play D&D, though it's the one I prefer.but the trouble is he's talking about "the old school" when there wasn't a universal and monolithic "the old school" and old school isn't synonymous with old school renaissance.>>97281268Mine wasn't the first reply so you're being a bit choosy.Comment too long. Why do "modern" and modern people go insane when they see some eldritch blorblo, but Conan could just kill it without going "aaaaaahhh save me niggerman!!!!!"
>>97283247What if i don't care and just take the thread as an excuse for talking about conan because i think he's cool, huh?
>>97283317Well he did rock bangs like no other man ever could. Neither Schwarzenegger nor Mamoa even tried. Sorbo did though(Kull isn't Conan but you get it).>>97281870Since we are talking about games, PCs in Conan 2d20 are surprisingly competent combatants but fear(threaten) attacks, that horrors do very well, sometimes without even using an action throught the Fear X trait, can absolutely shred them in one round.
Lovecraft's protagonists are usually intellectuals. They're highly educated individuals with a lot of knowledge regarding the inner workings of the universe and the nature of society. They lose their minds not because the monsters project a supernatural insanity field that makes people go crazy, but because they realise that a great deal of their knowledge is built on falsehoods and that the universe is far larger and far stranger they ever thought. Their entire identity as educated men disintegrates and the world as they know it is destroyed. So, they lose their minds.Take someone less cerebral who doesn't give a fuck about how things work, who isn't curious or informed about the universe, who just accepts the current state of affairs and adapts to it, whatever it might be. This caveman survivalist would take on deep ones without giving a fuck about how they are supplanting humanity and violating our entire species. He would see Cthulhu as another terrible monster like an orca or a polar bear, some great beast to be feared but not as a sign that his entire reality has been built on a lie, so he wouldn't go insane. He would take one look at non-euclidean horrors and assume that they just look funny and behave in strange and unusual ways, rather than lose his mind over this flagrant disregard for the rules of physics as he understands it.The more intelligent you are and the more you value your intelligence, the more vulnerable you are to Lovecraft's horrors. Conan has the perfect incurious, action-over-intellectualism psychology to face everything that Lovecraft ever devised without blinking.
Imagine thinking that insanity in cosmic horror is that you actually go crazy and not just that the truth you've learned means everyone else thinks and treats you as crazy
>>97281870In actual Lovecraft and not the pastiches, people tend not to go entirely mad witnessing eldritch horrors. They instead demonstrate symptoms of what we would today call PTSD, which makes sense, because Lovecraft was writing in a recently post-WW1 world and evinced clear interest in the trauma then known as 'shell shock.' Lovecraft himself had a lifelong fear of heritable insanity due to his parents, and this also shows in some of his work.Conan, for his part, does show bad fear and trauma when he encounters the ineffable more than once. Hell, just seeing a dead dude revived as a zombie by a friendly evil wizard upsets him. REH intended Conan as an ideal/aspirational character, and in-fiction you could argue his Cimmerian upbringing and mercenary life selected for a protagonist more resilient to trauma.Oh, and traditional games? Faggot.
