I started working on a Science Fantasy TTRPG. It was originally a GURPS setting, but i wanted something more pulpy, less realistic, and it's spun off into its own thing.
Here's the latest draft, tell me what you think

coulding find a description of what "breaching" does, its a tag on shaped charges.
i assume its an anti armor thing seeing as
the damage itself is only about two gunshots for something that cuts through bulkheads

i realized that too. it's been updated.
thanks for the catch :)

although maybe since a shaped charge bypasses vehicle scale, 5d10 is a little much...

It is somewhat (maybe to a lesser degree) the same with CoC2, futa aside, Arona is cute and I keep returning to her. Classic muscular tough bitch who blushes the moment you treat her as a woman.

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.

1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).

2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session.

3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

>1. time pressure
Cool.
>including real life clocks
lol no don't do gimick shit like this. Its not hard to keep track of time in game in a clear and visually apparent way like a big D6 or anything to note the passing of time.
>contentious
What's contentious about it? If a player is taking too long tell them they're taking too long and need to make a decision with descriptive notes.
>2. The Gming engine
This is a bad gameplay style and makes the rest of your 'advice' make more sense. Don't prep railroads or plots. Prep situations and factions for story games. Prep the actual fucking dungeon if its a crawler. Go back and read how an actual session zero is suppose to run, like from the source that idea came from. If you don't know, again, that illuminates your well intentioned but bad advice.
>3. muh immersion
This is taken are of in any basic post game wrap and prep. Again, have factions and situations not plots.
>4. clocks and events
Seems fine although the chances of you fucking it up given the first three is strong. You have to have your clocks factions be in relation to player events and reactive rather than prescriptively following your set events. No clear indication you understand that.
>5. RPGs are an exercise in solopsism
fuck off and then fuck off again. They're an exercise in group gameplay and contextual exploration with emergent story. Its a group activity, not solipsism or any sort of quantum bullshit you're soft advocating for.

>9. OOC conversation
Again, this is totally fine to do and necessary. Trying to get everyone to thespian it up all in character and do the dialogues all in character is a waste of everyone's time. Do not do this. Players and the GM can summarize a dialogue their character is making you do not have to nor should it be word-for-word in character dialogue.
>I search my memory for blahblahbblah
yeah fuck that. We don't have time for that shit and your immersion can't be that fragile or using a dice or a pen or reading in english or anything will snap it. You almost have it with characters basic knowledge, but you can just tell them that shit. Ties in with 7.
>10. Fail forward meme
Say what bluntly?
>11. 3 sentence maximum
Good. Less is more. Make it terse but evocative.
>12. Reactive elaboration
Yes, good. Make use of well tailored tables and background world thinking to make this more seamless.
>13. Obstacles not solutions
Again yes. Good.
>14. Conflict
Varies, too vague advice on your part to do much with. Generally always erring on xyz makes you predictable in ways your players are too polite to tell you they've figured out. Again, random tables are utility tools.

I hear your disagreements. It's interesting to see different approaches to GMing. I like your three bonus tips. Do you have any additional GM advice? I'm open to new ways of making the game better for my table.
>>
>>97281895
Railroading is using GM fiat to force a certain outcome. It's always a bad thing. Using the term railroading the way op does up there dilutes the meaning. You can have linearity in a scenario design without it being a railroad. You can have a five room dungeon, where each room leads into the next room, and there is a boss and a treasure in the last room. It is linear, but it's not a railroad unless the GM is using fiat to force specific outcomes in each room, for example making it so no matter how well you stealth roll is you always have to fight, there is no room for interesting strategy, whatever the case may be.

I think that he was trying to say is a variation on what I believe for early in the campaign scenarios and one-shots, which is to start late. Don't start them in the tavern meeting the old man who gives them the map to the dungeon, start at the door to the dungeon saying "you're at the front door to the dungeon that the map you got from the old man in the tavern led to." Don't start in the briefing, start in the plane about to halo-drop into the hot zone. If possible, start in media res. This is a perfectly sensible way to start a campaign, and isn't "railroading."

Since we are talking about games, PCs in Conan 2d20 are surprisingly competent combatants but fear(threaten) attacks, that horrors do very well, sometimes without even using an action throught the Fear X trait, can absolutely shred them in one round.
>>
Lovecraft's protagonists are usually intellectuals. They're highly educated individuals with a lot of knowledge regarding the inner workings of the universe and the nature of society. They lose their minds not because the monsters project a supernatural insanity field that makes people go crazy, but because they realise that a great deal of their knowledge is built on falsehoods and that the universe is far larger and far stranger they ever thought. Their entire identity as educated men disintegrates and the world as they know it is destroyed. So, they lose their minds.

Take someone less cerebral who doesn't give a fuck about how things work, who isn't curious or informed about the universe, who just accepts the current state of affairs and adapts to it, whatever it might be. This caveman survivalist would take on deep ones without giving a fuck about how they are supplanting humanity and violating our entire species. He would see Cthulhu as another terrible monster like an orca or a polar bear, some great beast to be feared but not as a sign that his entire reality has been built on a lie, so he wouldn't go insane. He would take one look at non-euclidean horrors and assume that they just look funny and behave in strange and unusual ways, rather than lose his mind over this flagrant disregard for the rules of physics as he understands it.

The more intelligent you are and the more you value your intelligence, the more vulnerable you are to Lovecraft's horrors. Conan has the perfect incurious, action-over-intellectualism psychology to face everything that Lovecraft ever devised without blinking.

Does anyone happen to have a scan of the new BB edition book? Have a game with a friend tomorrow and wanted to get across the new rules, unless people recommend not bothering. Even then, it would be good to have in case my group goes that way anyway.

That wasn't bad, it's a perfect split for the new Imperial house vs aranthian aligned in the new book. Or you can split them into law-abiding and outlaw. Or just play normally. If your group doesn't fizzle out and goes for a 2nd run people are more likely to pick a different gang.

It is good and I like it better. The newer one is still very weeaboo but the older one comes from a more innocent time where no one cared, at least not publicly. It's totally unabashed about being some western fantasy of what Japan was like whereas the remake tones that stuff down. I don't think the new adaption captures the spirit of the novel well, it tries too hard to be less weeaboo which removes a lot of the charm, especially that of the thoroughly implausible love story that tracks through the novel and 80s show. The 80s also didn't try to force me to learn Japanese to understand what they were saying in Japanese, unlike the newer one when they left bits unsubtitled so that the viewer could be just as confused as the European characters at times. While I can see some good for leaving off subtitles in some productions, I don't think that helped the story telling in this story.

Compare the 1960 sand and sandals epic Spartacus with its wonderful saturated colours, over the top spectacle, square jawed never sets a foot wrong hero to a grimmer film like 2000's Gladiator with its slightly less square jawed and slightly flawed hero who lets his desire for revenge overcloud his judgement, throws in a little brooding, some moral quandaries, some emotional angst over the death of his family. Both very good films and both enjoyable. Same for both Shogun miniseries.

While they wasted him and this was not up there with his best work, this was the first thing I saw Toshiro Mifune in before I knew who Toshiro Mifune was.

Didn't hurt that it had Yoko Shimada as Mariko either.

If you created an Amazon setting, what would it be like? By Amazon setting, I don't mean a single society among many where women are primarily the fighters, I mean a setting where every society is this way. Some question to start someone off:
>What genre would you make your setting be?
>Do women tend to be musclegirls, men tend to be twinks, both, or does comparative height and build not change?
>Is the magic that men and women are capable of different?
>For pursuits that don't involve combat (such as hunting), are ones that are considered masculine and feminine swapped? Which ones?
>While women would dominate military matters, what about other goverment matters? Do those end up women dominated?
>How does courtship change?
>Did you Amazon setting start off as such in-universe or was it some new development that lead to it being that way?

Sorry I forgot to state the premise that: assume 1/3rd die in war. But you get the idea. Not letting women fight produces reproductive success that outcompetes your enemies. That's why human socieities were roughly egalitarian until the advent of war.
>>
In your amazon setting, do you make it that all male warriors are traps?
>>
>>97279861
>>97279875
The way you make it make sense is women are way more common than men. If 9 out of 10 births are female, suddenly sending your men off to war is a really bad idea.

Here's an addition that could be added, or used standalone, or perhaps made an important part of a system.
>The male followers of adventurer groups or larger combatant forces are called terms like "Camp Follower", "Lackey", "Logistics Workers" and lastly, "Heal Sluts" by the vulgar
>Thes men support women warriors, providing them with healing, equipment (mainly armor) repair and other non-combatant services
>The better ones will supplement the mundane parts of these services with magical abilities
>Sometimes, a warrior woman might have dabbling in the abilities that these men provide. This is most commonly as a nurse assisting healers
>The "Heal Slut" term comes because sometimes, these men have provided sexual relief. This can be coercive, mutual, or even men who seaked to be tools of sexual relief

It's been 2 weeks since I started playing sorcery with 2 booster boxes. Here are my thoughts
> 1 booster box will give you 2 good decks and 1-2 mediocre at best
> 2 booster boxes still only gave us 2 even better decks and 1 ok deck with high value cards
> art is amazing. I'm feeling the same vibes when I played L5R ccg
> multiplayer format will probably replace commander for us but the map I printed is 3mm thick and unfit for transport, on top of being huge
> game has 2 flaws from being perfect
> needs sleeves as picking the cards up and tokens is tricky
>suffers from mid to late game card sandwich syndrome. Since all the cards need to be in a single space to bunker down yet they are in specific positions, they create an unwieldly card stack e.g.
Tapped submerged unit with a ward token
Untapped suberged unit with a stealth token
Site
Tapped avatar
Untapped frog token
untapped minion with a token
and so it goes. But any AoE spell in this stack results in game over so maybe its just our internal inexperienced meta that favours this late game tower of babel.

I like Warhammer fantasy's system the different levels of drunkeness give you a pretty good targeting system for roleplaying.
>>
>>97281860
I would love to play a character who loves to drink, but one of the players used to be an alcoholic so I feel it would be too awkward.
Not like our parties never drink though, you gotta order something at a tavern if your character is normal and DMs throw in the occasional opportunity for party wide drunken revelry.

Seems about what I heard. Just points you to existing races and statblocks like how Planeshift books often did.
Certainly annoying for them to mentioned things like characters changing between Lorwyn or Shadowmoor, or those regions of petrifying mist, but not actually put any mechanics on what it means.

Also unsurprising is the locations. The kithkin are in small hamlets. The boggarts are in a warren. The elves are in their palace.
Very little actual mention of the elf culture and laws though, which is extremely important to a Lorwyn campaign. Basically on par with not mentioning the Sorcerer-Kings from Dark Sun own slaves.

Bestiary is similarly unsurprising. Half-dozen entries, nothing particularly special. The suggestion to use the core Scarecrow statblock for Shadowmoor scarecrows is a little insulting though. Shadowmoor scarecrows are usually way weirder. Telling people to just use any Construct statblock would have been more accurate.
What stands out the most is the premade adventures though. They seriously made a single map for a kithkin community center, and then just put both modules in it. I'd be at least mildly more impressed if they'd bothered to make a Lorwyn and Shadowmoor version of the same building, but no. It's just two Lorwyn adventures in a book all about duality.
The adventures themselves aren't anything special.
First is sabotage at a contest, except there's no mystery to who's behind it, just beating up constructs until the culprit reveals themselves.
Second is bodyguarding during a banquet. Pretty sure this one is nigh impossible if you run it straight, because the 11 HP target the players are guarding gets 'accosted' by a CR 6 Invisible Stalker. That is for the best, because it spares everyone the retardation of the final encounter.

Overall I'd put it behind Theros, but still ahead of Strixhaven. There's much less here, but it doesn't entirely neglect the plane's history and bothered to include some notes on locations.

What is this a Greek expansion for D&D?

You're going to read all Theros content from MtG that you can get your hands on and it probably still won't be enough, the setting book in question is very light on details it should've included. Having some knowledge on ancient Greece so that you can fill in these gaps with historically relevant information wouldn't be a bad idea.
