How would you humanize enemy mooks even if the players have to put them down at the end of day? How do you make it so that players leaving piles of corpses in their wake is not a trivial matter?
>>97386598Humanizing something doesn't mean you have to feel bad or that it is wrong to kill it, it just means that they have a story. Not bothering robs the situation of its gravitas, and makes the setting more shallow for literally no reason.
>>97385570You just have to manage the collateral damage. How much disease can you excise until you cut out too much healthy tissue in the process for the whole system to heal?

I've always wanted to see a Lord of the Rings story that takes place after the War of the Ring has concluded. A band of a half-dozen Orcs and two Goblin Warg-Riders from Mordor fleeing in the wake of Gondor and Rohirrim entering it, because they don't want to be wiped out (whether or not the Men actually intend to do this isn't clarified). These Orcs are still evil, to be clear. But we'd basically follow a sort of reverse-Fellowship as they travel from Mordor north, to Dol Guldur, because they're chasing rumors that Dol Guldur hasn't fallen, is holding out in the wake of Sauron's defeat. And the point would be to show that while they're evil, it's because they were shaped to it, not born to it. And it doesn't consume their every waking moment. We get moments of camaraderie, of humor, genuine friendship between the Goblins and their Wargs (who, remember, can speak) and of course the entire journey is one of desperate hope. Of course this being a tragedy, as they near Dol Guldur they'd come across an Orc fleeing from it - it's fallen to the Dwarves. Dwarves to the north, Men following from the south, this band of Orcs trapped in the middle. So the story concludes with them deciding to make a last stand against the Dwarves and Men, preferably at some historically significant ruin. And the final chapter is the battle in which they fall, one by one, while we also see them working together, defending each other, being aggrieved when one of them falls because they knew them...essentially everything that would go into a last stand if the characters were Men or Elves or Dwarves, it's just that instead we're following Orcs and Goblins and Wargs. They probably take up a song during the whole thing, something Orcish, something about battle that's nevertheless also somehow about the pointlessness of it all. Something tired. The last surviving Orc, run through by a sword, manages to finish the song."It's done."Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

>>97385194Witch Hunt 1983 StatCom Simulations Inc. is the game (in pdf form) that has eluded my collection for decades. I don't believe it's ever been scanned. And it had one supplement, which I might soon drop the $200.00 for. I don't even think "GodAnon" can procure a pdf copy of the Witch Hunt corebook.
For some time now, I've been developing my free game, an RPG/strategy interactive fiction simulator about a Dark Lord/Lady trying to conquer/destroy a fantasy world using intrigue, corruption, dark magic, and brutal military force.I have already sought and received your help several times, for which I am grateful.I am planning another major update, focusing primarily on the endgame. Players focused on direct conquest will have new ways to find loot—portals to crazy, Lovecraftian worlds, discovering new lands, and a magical slumber to wait for the rebirth of old enemies/the emergence of new ones (and seeing how the world changes in their absence). For players more interested in the less brutal side of world domination, the options for managing the territories of our empire will be expanded. Will you allow orcs to overrun Dark Elf cities? Will schools focus on training engineers for the army and economy, or on brainwashing them into blind obedience? Furthermore, I'm expanding the Dark Lord's interactions with other characters, including available romances. Of course, new content requires testing, and since, as usual, it's highly non-linear and dependent on player decisions (plus random generation), I can't test every combination myself. That's why I'm seeking the help of testers. Here is test version - no need for download, it is playable online in the browser, no need to register or download: https://adeptus7.itch.io/playtesting

>>97385740Hi, no, not Dungeon Keeper+. Of course SG ia one of the inspirations, but probably not main (e.g. Crusader Kings was more important). Its focus is not on on building and defending your lair (however there are elements of it), but influencing outside world, establishing cults and spy network, corrupting and cursing nations, leaders and other characters to change them into desired direction, institage wars or waging them yourself when the enemy is weakened etc. Why /tg/? Because I know that local anons helped with their ideas in creating many games (like Chapter Master) - and because I already make such threads few times, on the occasion of the previous updates and usually I got good and useful feedback.

>>97378890Hi, I tired this a few months ago when you first(?) posted it. The intial run through was fun, got the weird metaphysical end. The second run through as a fighter type was much less interesting in general. Cute idea though, thanks for making it. Is there a /v/ for flash games, vine types, cyoas etc? This is more or less a cyoa, might try talking to that general if you haven't.

>>97384115While I agree that there's not really anything wrong with a competitive game, I more or less agree. Warhammer doesn't make for a good competitive game and the attempt to make it one is destructive at best.Take your chess example: chess doesn't really stack up because you can't have a "Chess" campaign with spots on a map, a story, characters, pieces that distinguish themselves, etc.I found the campaign section in the 4th edition rulebook to be inspiring. My first experience with wargaming was LoTR where a guy printed out a map of Middle Earth on a big board with flags to represent factions, cities, and armies, and then had players pick them up and make characters for them while trying to take over Middle Earth all wrapped up in a story, it was fantastic. People spend months on D&D campaigns and they spend months on other things of the sort. Likewise, I don't believe that gutting out the game's characterful rules including an attempt at simulating the battlefield where models can interact with the table and vice-versa could be an alternative for a traditional wargame. I don't think this makes 10e the right edition for the whole 'have your buddy over to play a good game together'.

Tabletop RPGs tend to split up crafting into a high number of crafting subskills for every individual area of expertise. There's no question that crafting is still extremely powerful despite forcing you to go through this hassle, but what are your thoughts on which particular crafting subskills tend to be the most useful in the context of a TTRPG campaign, be it a medieval or modern or sci-fi setting?Pic related is from Legend of the Five Rings, where I'll be playing a crafter soon, and I intend to invest heavily into crafting. But feel free to talk about any game you've had experience with.
>>97386543I doubt that.
>>97386550What's the issue? Instead of Acrobatics, you take a skill in crafting a certain item. Then you double your prof if you have proficiency in appropriate tools as well. If you have neither, you're not able to make a functional item, they will have at least two flaws. You can use Arcane for enchanting, but if you have proficiency on a homebrew "Evocation" skill, you can make a flaming sword with much lower risk of failure.

Should an elven wizard be more powerful on average than a human one? Explain your answer.
>>97356786I agree
>>973567283.5e handled this by giving elves a bonus to Intelligence, which is truly WotC's official only trait that makes them stronger. At the heart of your post, yes. Yet this is all we got and now even the stat bonus for species has been removed. Why do elves deserve to be better wizards? Because they are documented as getting their powers from years of study and hard work. A being that can live 5 times longer than a human has much more time to study and develop. If we were being real, there would be no comparison, although with a game interested in balance, they won't make a dichotomy that severe.
>>97386643Yeah elves sort of having to be balanced for game mechanics takes some of the lore away.
>>97386798Quite a bit in fact. I mean, not to get onto this topic, but look at people on Earth. We vary in size more than the race guidelines for character creation in the Player's Handbook does. Same with innate strength and intelligence. A species that lives an extra few centuries, be them elves or dwarves, would be incredibly different and diverse. It truly is balancing these factors that greatly takes away from what race differences could be.
>>97386945That's why level adjustment existed to balance some nonhuman PC's long ago, now gnomes run the same speed as goliaths.

why are many creators so afraid of making a setting with napoleonic wars era technology?
>>97285005Because there's no reason to. The Napoleonic Wars are already interesting. Adding dragons doesn't do anything and would bring into question a lot of what people like about Napoleonic warfare (the infantry tactics and formations that are unlike any other period). If you're interested in the period, by a copy of The Campaigns of Napoleon (David G. Chandler) and The Peninsular War (Charles Esdaile), read them, then buy a copy of either Age of Eagles or Field of Glory Napoleonics and enough Perry or Victrix figures to make a brigade with a few battalions of infantry, a unit or two of cavalry, and some guns.
This thread made me wonder how a napoleonic version of Dishonored would look like. Thats a type of setting that i can see working, with less focus on open warfare and more focussed about urban stuff, the occult and the supernatural. Just not with a victorian steampunk coat, but a napoleonic one.
