An entity, whether an independent person, group of people, or corporation, who both cares about game design and has experience making tabletop wargames.

1. Good lore
2. Balanced gameplay
3. Robust tournament support
4. Emphasis on activated abilities and single entity hero units/monsters
5. High accessibility. Preferably by favoring low model counts, small boards, and simplistic terrain/paint schemes.
6. WYSIWYG and IGOUGO. Alternating activations is a bad mechanic.
7. And this is the most important one, a genuine respect for diversity, inclusion and representation

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

Welp, good luck with convincing the management to let you keep it going, OP.
Still, maybe the other West March campaign is using another system, so it won't steal your participants, right?

OP here!

Played the test session today, only 3 players (Bob from >>97355904 was a no show)

My usual group is... something. They have about 0% focus, is very hard to explain anything to them, and I thought they were familiar with 5e but turns out only 1 player was (even then, there were several mix-ups/hold-ups with character creation)

With that being said, I think a future session with those players would be ~50% more productive

Nevertheless, the session turns out pretty well. Identified some minor flaws, but overall travel made sense, they discovered interesting things, they kind of easily completed a quest/rumor, then afterwards just exploring on their own:
>Decided to follow a quest to find the missing doctor around the coast
>Found him only 1 hex away
>Nevertheless, had to fight 4 murlocs (pic related) to get to him
>Actually, the chance the guy was there where the murlocs were was only 1/6
>After making that small-chance roll, I mentioned it to the players, and opened to the discussion the likelihood (in %) of the doctor even being alive
>We settled, being optimistic, at 25% of being alive

I'm glad you're having fun with your game but this is absolutely nothing like a West Marches, you might want to consider relabeling it especially if there's another WM game that's going to be ongoing in your FLGS.

>absolutely nothing like a West Marches
Well, considering that Google's definition (made up of whatever the internet consensus is) has 6 definitions:

>1. Exploration Focus: A sandbox world with uncharted areas that players map and discover as they venture out.
>2. Persistent, Shared World: Actions by one group affect the world for others, creating a dynamic, evolving environment.
>3. Hub & Spoke Model: Adventures start and end in a safe, central location (like a town or guild), with characters returning there between sessions.
>4. Episodic/Serialized: Sessions are often self-contained adventures (like one-shots) that build upon each other, making it great for new GMs.

All of these (4 out of 6) definitions are un-arguably part of what we are doing
>5. Player-Driven Scheduling: Players organize sessions among themselves and the GM based on availability, rather than a fixed weekly time.
>6. Large, Fluid Player Pool: Accommodates many players (even 50+) by having different groups play at different times, all part of the same world.
Out of these, item 5 is also valid because A) this core group as 3~5 players that maybe be present at a given day, and B) we often do guests that may play a session here and there. And 6 because I'm planning to keep this the same world as the one from the LGS, so actions wouldn't be contained just between those few players (I wouldn't call WM if it was just the core group, to be a proper WM experience it should have at least 10+ players overall)

But please do enlighten me how a definition that matches 6 out of 6 criteria is "nothing like it"

I don't disagree with this, Twitter and Youtube have just encouraged monetizing it. With 9gag and Reddit the worst you had to worry about was internet points and just flat out claiming your ideas were theirs.
And the fundamental problem is the kind of thread this sort of monetization encourages. Like the pattern on Twitter is
>4chan OP with a question
>the thread got a lot of replies, so it must get a lot of replies on twitter too
And again these accounts are monetized, so you have an endless churn of
>ELF GF WHAT DO
>WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF ELF GF
>ELF GF IS RACIST AGAINST HUMAN, OH NO WHAT FUNNY SITUATION
>>

Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

The main thing I remember about Shandalar was wandering from town to town searching for cards to improve my deck, avoiding powerful enemies and pouncing on weaker. The meat of the game was the process of building your collection and sorting the wheat from the chaff. Even with a more modern deckpool I don't see why you couldn't do that.

So my DND group was kind of disolving, 2 out of the 4 players left because of life issues (one got a job abroad and the other one is dealing with life), to keep playing we incorporated 2 new players with not so much experience but avid watchers of Critical Role.

One of these player conditions was that we incorporate x cards to the game, she says that it makes it much more comfortable for her to know she can avoid unpleasant story elements having this tool.

I started to read a bit about it online and is this something you guys have used? In my 20 years playing I've never used this.

Which is why you actually suss out whether the GM is a magical realmer before playing with him instead of opting into a performative social justice bludgeon that is intentionally designed to be as abusable as possible.

I would just look at them like picrel without saying a thing making a "shoo" hand gesture to entice them to get the fuck out. If you have even 2 players available you can make a game OP, you don't need more than 3 for filling the 4 side of a table anyways, anything more is just unnecessary.

That's the thing though, I have never seen this shit used in an "Actual Play" series. They expect you to use this shit, not them. Critical Role has some of the most absurdly crude crap in it at times too, things I'd tell a player to pump the brakes on.

It's actually the one reason why, despite having a lot of fantasy miniatures in general (both GW and others) I don't actually like using them in RPG's. Any markers or grid maps or the like, really. In my experience it flips players straight into 'wargame mode' and they move and fight accordingly. Ends up quite dull.

Overall, I liked how WoD handled the old Orcs. Particularly Gul'dan. For all the "it was just cowwuption!" bullshit Blizzard pulls on so many of their villains it was refreshing to see Gul'dan be unashamedly evil and just a smug asshole enjoying himself being evil.

>Tolkien didn't invent the word "orc"
No. He did. That the syllable existed and had been used before in other languages doesn't create an etymological connection between the prior uses and the modern use. There isn't one. The modern word is a construction of Tolkien.
>and wasn't the first to use it for some kinda monstrous being
He was. It previously meant "hell". Tolkien misunderstood a couple Old English references as meaning "demon".
>>
>>97370240
>>97374061
More to the point, even if the word had existed, it wouldn't mean there was some sort of mythological or folkloric basis around its existence. There isn't one. The surviving references come from a poem written as fiction at the time (and even there only as part of a compound word likely meant as a euphemism for draugr) and a glossary.

Orcs as entities do not come from folklore. They come from Tolkien. Or rather from D&D ripping off Tolkien, since Tolkien just meant for it to be a word for his goblins.
>>
>>97370240
>>97374061
>>97374112
And to further cement this distinction between orcneas and orc. Tolkien himself personally said orcneas as draugrs were the basis for his barrow-wights, ie not his goblins/orcs.
