TTRPGs are a social game first and foremost. That means there's unspoken rules that vary from group-to-group, but a common one is "acceptable breaks from sensibility" in the name of game experience or table cohesion. It's the kind of thing that keeps the bitter rivalry between the Elf and the Dwarf largely to amusing banter and not outright PvP. It's an innate instinct: nobody likes to spoil the atmosphere, because that's a large part of the appeal of a good game (alongside the freedom).

That being said, there are also times when the group's course of action is patently retarded and you can't meaningfully push back on it without feeling like you'd cause a big fight over nothing (and then feel obligated to keep comrades away from the consequences), or something a character cannot abide has to be "sanded over" somewhat, or you as the GM don't want to cultivate the feeling that you're antagonizing your players by hitting them over the head with "you murdered someone because it was convenient and didn't even take measures to cover your tracks" or whatever unhinged misadventure occurred because something about the player position of the table cause human beings to lose IQ.

Have you ever had that feeling? I think I see enough greentexts to think it's common.

Is it finally over for scalpers?

I work at a Walmart in the midwest, and there are only automated limits put in place, per transaction. Usually 4 per same item. However, there is nothing stopping a cashier from just doing multiple transactions of the same cards. Might flag something in the system eventually, but I have yet to see it.

My manager doesn't really care about scalpers and re-salers, so there's always this group of arabs that come in and buy the whole set of laptops that just went on clearance, just so they can sell them online for 2x/3x the clearance price. Wish we could tell them to kick rocks, but Walmart only cares about "number go up!" and other self-destructive behavior.
>>
They'll just scalp something else. I saw a guy buy over 200 pounds of ground beef at a supermarket and excitedly tell me about how he was going to flip it on a local buying/selling app. I wonder if he still has a freezer full of it.

I grew up in the hood, the sticks, the holler, and juvenile penitentiaries my whole upbringing. Customers don't rile me up at all. Been through much worse. The Walmart structure and upper management are the fucking bane of my existence, though. That said, customers have gotten worse. Doesn't help that the Walmart I work at is within the accessible "let's flee from Chicago and make ourselves a problem there instead" distance. Thankfully I live in Indiana, so we actually have more gun rights than Texas does. Plan on moving to the southern part of the state; the north has been overrun with illegals and criminals from Chicago and liberal potheads from Michigan. Columbus, IN seems nice.

Writing General: 'festive' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

That seems really reductive.
>>
>>97242177
Well, sure, via sufficiently advanced genetic engineering modifying humans into all kinds of exotic "aliens" would be pretty trivial but would they really be aliens at that point? You could of course do the whole ancient precursors or even past human empire that has collapsed etc type of justification being the reason why galaxy is filled with what are essentially modified humans, but that begs the question of "are these even aliens?" again.
>>
>>97242473

Think of it this way: if you need a GSB, almost surely you could justify it via genetic engeneering (even with advanced furfaggotry and such) plus ancient aliens doing their usual bullshit as needed. Maybe some wetware implants.

I mean, it's cheap, but so are GSBs. If you want something more or less interesting, I suppose you could go full autistic and ask yourself why there is a whole ethnicity (if that's the right word) of humans with funny noses or whatever.

While true, they also do it because it's a cheap way of conveying an idea or a specific kind of character trait to communicate the idea of the story.

Star Trek is specifically guilty of this although it can be said that at least the Ferengi got a massive glow up from being slinking monkey dudes with bulbous foreheads and dragon dildo laser whips to a respectable race who represent old world capitalism in a post scarcity "we don't use money" world.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

I'm looking at giving F&B a try. I recieved some High Seas boosters as a Christmas gift and my LGS has a Super Slam event kit thing next week; I assume this is draft as entry is $25 NZD and the retail price of a Super Slam prerelease kit seems to be around $55-60. Is this a bad way to try the game? I have no experience playing outside of the interactive tutorial and how to play video. I really don't want to fall into a pattern of netdecking and following a meta etc.

Looking to play further beyond this, it seems like I lack opportunities to play which is ironic given that I live in the city where the game was created. Most Armory days are on weeknights and I live too far away to practically attend any, and the only remaining weekend ones seem to be an hour+ drive away.

I currently play Magic and have experience with the WoW TCG if it's relevant. I see the pastebin in the OP but note that it hasn't been updated for 3 years.
>>
>>97242684

>>
>>97242684
If you have no experience and attend any event that isnt explicitly being advertised as beginner oriented , as in people there willing to demo and teach, you are going to have a very very bad time. If you do not compose your deck with what is common in mind you will also have a very bad time. The game is absolutely not casual investment friendly , it demands a lot of energy and prep not only to get a single win, but to not play like a trainwreck and be ostracized

You do you anon, but honestly it doesn't really look all that appealing to me. That's honestly the most indicting thing about ai art I can say, since I know next to none of the people obsessed with it give a shit about the sheer environmental waste involved so far (cause progress or whatever) or how most of it is ugly (cause it'll look better we totally swear), most of it mainly looks unmemorable and passe.

Feel free to participate with questions or additions to any element of my system, or answers to questions that I ask. If you have your own design questions for TTRPGs, I'd be happy to give my 2 cents as well.

First topic presented for review will be my take on general actions and action economy which I think is moderately unique

DAMAGE TYPES AND RESISTANCE
damage is split into 2 types - physical and energy

>physical damage reduction is based on armor quality(DR1, 2, 3 and sometimes 4)
>automatic weapons (usually)deal d4 and d6 damage and can deal 21d4 in a single attack
>single fire guns and melee weapons tend to deal 1 or 2 d8/10/12 damage
>armor subtracts 1/2/3/4 from EVERY dice thrown
>automatic weapons have much higher damage potential on completely unarmored targets(“standard” armor is 2), but gets fucked dramatically more against heavy armor

>energy shields can be any frequency(die size) you want, and have a battery life of X amount of dice
>energy shields affect ALL energy based attacks
>energy shields halve damage of all energy-based damage dice as long as the battery holds
>energy shields that have a matching frequency to the attack(d8 for example) instead negates the damage

FRAMES AND CORES

Cores specifically are the main part of your mech. In universe, the core is both the ‘skeleton’ and operating system. The core determines HP, damage avoidance, weight limit, energy limit. The frame is a lot less important statistically, but it is what covers your mech so by name it’s important

Mechs are named after their core+frame and each of the three planets have their own naming conventions

Earth cores are named after liquors and frames are named after times

MOMENTUM AND FLIGHT
this is more of me thinking out loud rather than presenting any finalized.

ALTITUDE LEVELS
>major height and elevation differences are measured in abstract levels
>1 level of difference is out of range of melee weapons and is treated as the same distance for ranged weapons
>as in shooting someone 5 spaces away is functionally the same whether they’re on the same level or a level higher
>shooting someone 2 levels higher is treated as a degree of long range
>weapons capable of 2 degrees of long range would only be able to fire at someone within 1 degree of long range and 2 levels of height difference
>being higher than your target should probably give you 1 extra level before you start getting accuracy/distance penalties versus being 1 level lower just for the tactics of it

>being in air is slippery
>im thinking that if you travel X amount of spaces from your starting point during your turn, you also have that amount of spaces in momentum speed
>momentum speed means that at the end of your turn, place a second marker on the board and that’s where you’ll start on your next turn
>along with traveling larger distances, the benefit of momentum speed is that your damage avoidability increases by 1 for each space of momentum speed you’ll be traveling on your next turn

What kind of stories is this thing for? Give us five media touchstones
>>
>>97242623
It’s just a humble ttrpg with a sci-fi mecha base. I’m not trying to be too unique, just creating a system with the best balance of “satisfying mecha fantasy” and “not too crunchy” I can do. For specific stories, the mechanics don’t restrict anything as far as tones go. The 3 main planets have their own atmospheres though

Venus
>ruled by a single corporatocracy
>businesses and entities still frequently sabotage each other
>lends itself very well to the ‘band of mercs’ origin
>”there’s an AI mech we programmed as law enforcement but now it’s enforcing law on the politicians and CEOs that don’t like it, so go stop it”
>”some rival CEO kidnapped my daughter over the crabby party secret formula, go get her back”
>”I want to leave this soul crushing society but need money to do it”

Mars
>overpopulated and grimy
>main factors of life is urban warfare between street gangs in the city and actual warfare between official city armies
>”youre part of a platoon and need to survive X amount of days/waves of enemies with dwindling resources

Guys, I want to talk about HELLPIERCERS. I bought this game a bit ago because I thought it looked cool, and I've read it, and I don't know enough people weird enough to play it with me, and I can't stop thinking about it, and I just have to talk about it with someone.

>First up: what the fuck is Hellpiercers? And why do you spell it in all-caps? Do you have autism?
HELLPIERCERS is a tactical tabletop RPG developed by SandyPug Games alongside a few people who did some dev work on some of the Lancer supplements. It casts the PCs as gnostic demigod heroes and veterans of the War in Heaven, who aided the forces of humanity in regaining their stolen gnosis and slaying the Demiurge, his Archons, and angelic generals. Having conquered Heaven and liberated the mortal plane from the tyranny of false divinity, they now cast their eyes downward, into Hell, where countless human souls remain enslaved by the demon lords below. Hellpiercers, armed with their god-slaying weapons, clad in armor forged from the corpses of angels, lead a war of liberation against the forces of Hell, to free the enslaved souls of every human who has ever lived.

I spell it in all-caps because it's title is rendered in all-caps. I'm pretty sure I'm not autistic, but I've never been tested, so who even fucking knows?

For as much yip-yap that /tg/ players have about hating trannies and basedboys the games that actually get play is mostly just OSR games and that is just a mildly more edgy version of 5e.
Not that your game looks very good either, not much of a Lancer fan.

Mm. I think I have determined why the game gets such a poor reception on this site...

So the tactical combat phase reminds me a lot of ICON and Gubat Banwa, less so Lancer and 4e, but I think I get how this is meant to work. And then the strategic phase seems to include the players (collectively?) spending strategic resources, unlocking the tech tree, and maybe doing stuff like you'd find in Armour Astir's "Conflict Turn" to advance the course of the war, is that right?
Would that make the recon phase analogous to Lancer's "Downtime Actions," a mix of RP scenes and building up some benefits to use in the next fight?

It is certainly a wordy game. I will be the first to admit that it frontloads a lot with a lot of in-universe jargon and buries the lede in terms of what the actual structure of play on the campaign level looks like.

ICON and Gubat Banwa are better points of comparison, yes. Yeah, STRATCOM is spent with the players and the GM taking a couple of turns (as many as is necessary between tactical combat sorties based on strategic map movement and other factors) moving about the map, encountering shit on the overworld, spending resources, constructing buildings, performing rituals and other actions that affect the pace and the standing of the ongoing conflict. And RECON is, in fact, the unstructured, "narrative layer" play, mostly for exploring Dis, pursuing personal objectives, and finding cool shit in the Chambers, Vaults and Caverns under the city. It's kept deliberately loose, and most of the points of interaction relate to the tags you assign to characters and gear during chargen. Like, with Lancer's pilot-scale gameplay, it's probably going to be the most controversial part of gameplay for players who don't jive with something like Blades in the Dark.

Also, notable is that you never roll to attack during TACCOM. The forces of Hell are overwhelming. Everything around you wants to kill you. The air you breathe? The microbes in it want to perforate your lungs. The ground beneath your feet? Would love to open up and swallow you whole. You can't swing a stick without hitting something that wants you dead, so why bother? Damage is still randomized, and enemies don't roll to attack either, so careful positioning and risk management matter even more than in Lancer and ICON.

Why the hell is Gnosticism so popular?

Because it's meaningless. It's a word to prove that you're not like the other girls (male).
