Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

The authors seem to recommend running factions kind of like their own NPCs, where the faction itself has its own stated goals, personality, and agency. Each of the individual members of the faction fall into line with those qualities (unless the story demands otherwise). They also mentioned that they cribbed the "clock" mechanic from Blades in the Dark and apply that to all their games now, where the faction's goals are visualized as a subdivided circle (4, 6, 8, etc. subdivisions based on difficulty of achieving the goal). The faction fills in or loses a filled in part of the circle based on actions the party takes, and a full circle means the faction achieves its goal. For example, a rebel group that is trying to prop up the true heir of the recently deceased local noble would get part of its circle filled in if the party displays evidence in the court that the usurper came to his position by illicit means, or if they go and kill the usurper, but they would lose part of their circle if the usurper sends the party to attack their base of operations or if the party skips town without challenging the status quo.

I'm a newbie DM putting together a run of Lost Mines for four (mostly) new players of varying levels of engagement. Maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse asking if it's worth trying to get a player engaged when they don't even know their class abilities at level 1 beyond "hit the guy with my sword". Maybe asking them to examine their character motivations more will make them more engaged.

players are never as invested as the dm, so we are basically always one level of sophistication ahead

when your newbie players are just at rolling dice and hitting things with a sword, you're already starting to think of thematic links between encounters, playing to strengths and weaknesses, clues and red herrings

once they finally start thinking of their character motivations and what they want to accomplish, you should already be at the stage of narrative arcs, ebb and flow, managing tone and pacing, etc

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

>Maharaha LP
I think so

>Regular Troops wouldn't benefit
Then it applies to Ascetics, Pirates, Priestesses, Flag-Elephants, and Spies, which is definitely enough on its own.

>Sharpshooter
The lost men still use prophecies, and even the Arch-Heretic British can use them too. For the Sharpshooter I would suggest letting it use a variation of the predestination prophecy where only it can attack once the condition is met, but it can do so without LoS and with a damage buff. Sevenfold Sharpshooter or something like that.

>Elephants
It is a bit of a kludge, but you could combine the profiles and add an addendum saying that two elephants constitute one elite for the purposes of the elite counter. I have done that repeatedly for units.

>Gas Masks as traits

Something like this?

>Seventhfold Sharpshooter
Secretly note down an Enemy or Hostile model, a hex and publicly note an upcoming turn. If at any point in the noted turn the noted model enters the noted Hex, interrupt its activation, and the “Lemurian Sharpshooter” resolves as many ranged shots as it has available (if it has 4 shots, do 4 attacks; if it has 2 shots, do 2 attacks; if it has to reload, nothing happens). The “lemurian sharpshooter” still needs to be within its range to do so.

Have a holiday Revenant. This one is a test unit to see how assembly and painting works for something like this. I drilled a hole in the mouth to make a rictus howl and melted the face down with acetone, once it sets it should hopefully look mask-like. After that I'll need to firm up the crest and maybe add something on the back if I feel like it.

Previously: https://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/96936967/

When last we met, we made G.E.T.S. (Generally Entertaining Team-built System). Thus far, it seems to be a fairly minimalist system.

Now, we shall make our first setting for this system.

If your proposed idea gets doubles, it is canonized. Any canon characters, worldbuilding, themes, et cetera can be modified (but not outright contradicted or discarded) by triples, quadruples, et cetera.

Let us continue.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Dwarves, elves, and brets were the three biggest punching bags in all the fluff, dishonorable fourth mention for beastmen who probably would've been shit on just as much had they ever even been slightly more relevant. There's nothing sad about any of their stories, you know they're gonna job hard af because that's what the turdburglars in charge of the lore demanded.

>Anyone who leads a group with a building is unlikely to leave that post. So that rules out abbots, superiors, priests and bishops in most cases. The pope is literally a senior administrative position and mostly concerned with management and both internal and external politics. Same for the bishop. Priests are stuck to their congregation and specialize in preaching more than practice. Monks are stuck to their monastery and serve by living an ascetic life and nuns are women and thus lack agency.

Depends on the noble rank of other members of the party. A Bishop wouldn't be that strange a holy man amongst a group (such as Charlemagne's Peers) supporting a King or Emperor. Abbots fit amongst upper nobility such as lesser Kings, Dukes, and Marquess. It would not be unexpected to have a Count or Baron receive council from the brother or sister superior from a convent or monastery in their lands. Knights would likely interact with the parish priesthood. Outside their monasteries frairs, monks and nuns would likely be the clergy interacting with the more common people.
>>
>>97226577
>A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

They crossed that rubicon when edgerunners came out and revealed Arasaka's new mech suit had a gravity gun that could crush an entire platoon like a pancake.

A starting level character having a 1 in 3 chance to get a major favor from an NPC seems like pretty good odds to me, dude, and as >>97239432 said, you can use luck to make it a sure thing.
>>
>>97240830
Always found it funny that Adam Smasher is a boogeyman because he targets basic level street punks when Arasaka has tech like this. And the body is supposed to go to Smasher, so Smasher will go back to unga bunga bullying babies again because he is a sore loser that cant get rid of his grudge of losing to a old coot with a stick.
>>
>>97242019
In my games I made Smasher the true boogeyman, all the stories of him jobbing are just fake copes and his stats are so bloated (beyond what the basic rules would allow) that he's basically "YOU FUCKING LOSE" statblock, unless the party's goal is to escape.
>>
>>97242019
Well, Arasaka loads Smasher into mission-specific bodies; that's the great thing about an FBC. Part of the only reason Smasher actually gets merked in 2077 is that he's in a general purpose body... well, what passes for a general purpose body when you're Adam Smasher. He wouldn't need the cyberskeleton unless (or more like 'until') there's a new Corpo war on, so he's comfortable 'just' being a 9 foot tall stack of violence.

Honestly he's pretty stacked statistically; "defeating" him is more consistently a matter of fending him off and not being enough of a priority to warrant additional effort. He doesn't really seem to hunt street-punks for sport as much as it being such an effortless expenditure that he can do it between being Saburo's #1 errand boy; like a kid knocking the heads off of flowers on his way back from the grocery story with his mom's cigarettes.

If you have a crew that can take on Smasher with fair odds, if he's gunning for them you should probably stick him in his Dai Oni. He doesn't care about a fair fight and neither does Arasaka.

the whole film is about how jack nicholson's character's life improves immensely once he stops being an asshole. Particularly to women, but also just in general.

Mixed bag. My wife is a good roleplayer and tends to help keep the group focused, and is great at working through puzzles and such. She refuses to read the rulebooks for any system though, so usually I end up having to help her with more crunchy mechanics and interactions. An overall improvement to the group for sure.
On the other hand, my buddy's wife fits the "wife brought along to RPG night" stereotype to a T. She's friendly and all but doesn't so much as make her own character and loses interest in favor of her phone very quickly and semi-regularly derails the group. Definitely the kind of person who is only there because she wants to spend time with her husband rather than because she has any real interest in RPG's.

I have never had an overall positive experience with a female player.
Which regrettably is not for lack of trying.

I'm glad that others have had better experiences, but I won't be giving it another shot.
