Current table. Nothing too fancy. Just a few yards of plain green cloth from walmart, with just a touch of spray paint for variation. Hindering terrain boundaries are green felt cutouts, also touched up with spray paint. Water is just cutouts from blue transparency sheets. Tree scatter is just model railroad trees that I touched up with even more spray paint, and based. bridges are popsicle stick builds

I have a metricised retroclone (or so) of Chainmail called "Scalemail" that I posted here a couple years back --which evolved eventually into the thing called Battle aXe. (another wargame for B/X) But I didnt know any other clones, otherwise I would have chosen another name.

This one is really faithful to the base/mass combat rules of Chainmail, but it doesn't have the man-to-man, fantasy combat rules, or fantasy units. Since those didn't need to be metricised, I guess the guy who did this didn't feel it was necessary to include them.

So basically I want to start running different kinds of settings/scenarios with friends.

None of us have ever been too into board games, it is primarily me that kind of brings them up and has the most experience but still nothing substantial.
Now the thing is, I want us to start running some more specific settings for example stuff like The Dark Tower books by Stephen King as a setting and the likes.

My question is, because D&D requires a lot of homebrewing, is something like GURPS the best more universal ruleset for wanting to try out a lot of differently themed campaign settings or is there something better than GURPS? And if so what edition?

KT18 was great, much better than what followed. Unfortunately I have no one to play it with. My local GW scene is addicted to consuming only the latest product (I refuse to call it "playing a game") and my /awg/ friends won't touch anything GW-related - Broheim and CRP BloodBowl being the only GW games that are getting a pass.
The transition from KT18 to KT21 was awful, simply terrible on every level. The compendium scam, removal of list-building, FOMO-driven business model, fucking shapes, ridiculously stupid and convoluted LoS-related rules - it was so bad it sill poisons the current edition in its core.
I still play KT basically to stay in touch with the local Warhams players but for game to be enjoyable it has to be scrapped altogether and rebuild from scratch.

Yeah people were using broken shit in hyper-competitive games - nothing to be surprised with. At least there was a possibility to play the game on casual level and go crazy with listbuilding and have fun with whacky and thematic lists. Now every team is being played in the same way whenever you play against them. It's so fucking boring and tiresome.

I did say specifically his anime as in whatever his headcanon of dragon ball is. What are you guys favorite perks to create magical/spiritual environments and resources (preferably passivly)? I want to be able to cultivate and make mystical exliars, in settings without mystical resources.

But I don't want to manually lug around territory, mines, farms and zoo's.

So far the only perk I know of that helps in this regard are.

Legitimate question: Do the few male Howling Banshees there are get a flat chest armour plate or do they just get the standard breasted plate and wear it though it's hollow? I think the latter would be cool to keep the outward image of a bunch of vicious female super soldiers killing people. Because if a dude joins them to begin with it's because he exhibits the finesse and precision they want, so the guy would already be acting kinda feminine, no?

Wanted to get a thread going about calendar megadungeons. Some blogger made a thing about it a couple years ago but it's existed for much longer.

The premise is simple: You write a dungeon room every day. Each month of rooms make up a floor of your dungeon. Never skip a day, but you can go back and edit as much as you want.

Why? Writing everyday is good for you. Helps you stay creative and exercise your brain. Also, this is deceptively challenging. If you've written a lot of dungeons or mega-dungeons before, you may find that this forces you to stretch some creative muscles you'd forgotten about.If you've never written a mega-dungeon before because you found it too daunting, this breaks it up into little bite sized chunks.

Some variations that people seem to like:

Each week's rooms are a cluster and directly tie into each other. Layout can be whatever you want.

Draw your rooms directly on a calendar so that the rooms vaguely fill the space (see pic).

Write a room 6 days a week and then use the 7th to design a unique monster, faction, or artifact that ties into the cluster or one of the rooms you wrote that week.

A skyscraper megadungeon can work, especially if you take into account that multiple different firms utilize different floors and parts of floors, and the scumminess of a cyberpunk world can mean that stairwells and elevators are limited in where they go, noise isolation between floors (to prevent bugging and corporate espionage) keeps fighting noise from being noticed, and security services are per-firm, contracted with very limited scopes. There's all your contrivances for why some dickheads shooting up floor 3 doesn't put the whole building on lockdown - the building is more of a necessary evil of space savings with different "commerce tribes" using it for their operations, not some kind of unified hive.

Or you could do things like having giant, mostly-horizontal (+/- 5 floors up and down from ground at most) sprawling "abandoned" complex that was originally some sort of megamall or manufactory and has been repurposed by different gangs, squatters, hermits, and other social misfits. Think like, urbex youtube channels in derelict high tech buildings but "shored up" instead of being full of black mold. There's a little more room for parlay in that sort of thing too since not everyone will be necessarily hostile, or hates their neighbors more than outsiders.

I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while.

So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI.

Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). these grogs ultimately don't like D&D, they want to autistically consume it to satisfy their hyperfixations and need for structure, and get furious when they see that as under attack.
Any reasonable person (or even autistic people that don't have that form of it) can look at D&D and realize there's no true "right" way to play, only wrong ways for particular tables. Trying to force your vision upon a game as open and fluid as D&D will always fail because you have utterly 0 influence over someone elses table. You cannot compell them to run the game a certain way, and neither can they do so to you.

So this drama is ultimately a utter shame.

I enjoyed BECMI enormously over the years (Played sicne 1982). Comparatively few options when played "as is". Race-as-class simplified a lot, although it did make halflings (sort of like a Thief but max level 8 without much compensation) and dwarves (Fighter maxing out at Lvl 12 instead of 36. Make what you will of that) ruleswise superflous.

AD&D suffered badly from poor structure of the books, but was, mainly and mostly, similar to BECMi but with lots more spells. A proper editor instead of booze and cocaine would have saved Gygax a lot of trouble.

AD&D2e was a nicely cleaned up version of AD&D with far more options, and even more spells.
Not bad at all if you want something with wider range in terms of classes and races and on-weapon proficiencies.

That being said, I have had fun anyway, with all of the above.

I like race-as-class because I find races as stat boosts to really annoy me. I am a little displeased to hear BECMI makes dwarves and halflings feel less useful/relevant.

Would you say the addition of more spells make AD&D deeper or more interesting, or does it just increase Magic User/Cleric paperwork?

I lean heavily towards making it more paperwork-heavy.
A lot of the spells did more-or-less the same things but with different names. Damage, mobilty enhancing/impeding, healing, scrying and so on.
Sure, types of damage (cold, fire et.c.) did play some role but neither me nor my players actually really found it made much difference. Why was Ice Storm a lvl 4 spell but Fireball Lvl 3 despite doing, essentially the same thing, that is to say cause damage over an area?

hmm, that makes me think, maybe I will just use the library 3d printer instead? It is one of those ones that is ass for models since everything not at right angels is made up of jaggedy lines, but that doesn't seem like as much of a problem for larger terrain pieces.

What is a good system for platoon level ancients/medieval?

Like around 30 models per side, larger than squad actions of like 5-15, but smaller than army actions of like 50+? Basically the largest amount of men a single officer could command in detail. The smallest scale where you command groups of models instead of single models.

The Germans fought against the poles here in September 1939 and against the Soviets in January 1945. Very likely Prussians and Austrians fought around here in the 1700s. Maybe mongols even passed through on their way to Legnica?
