That's a nicely painted one, but ngl the bonereaper aesthetic has to be one of the worst things GW has come up with. It feels like lazy cad drafting to make skeleton models less spindly & easier to cast, but on top of that it flies in the face of what made skellymans cool which was reusing the bones of what were clearly once monsters & humans- when they're morphed & warped into specific shapes that clearly were never a part of an actual skeletal structure they might as well be made of metal at that point.

Well its April 1st again. I return first of all to remember one of /tg/'s finest works: Dungeons the Dragoning 40,000 7th edition. Last year I gave the game a revision, stapling both books together so it could rival a phonebook.

I mean there are games that do lends themselves to theatrics because they somewhat enforce them through rules (for example in Hero you can "attack" with presence), i would assume you can use some optional rule (like some advanced fright check from some horror splat) even in d&d but as is there's nothing enforcing the pc to simply sitting there listening to the bbeg monologuing.

Do you prefer a ton of detail fleshing out an adventure module, or do you prefer only the most note worthy and explicit features required to run the adventure? there's two competing schools of thought on how one creates more work for the DM than the other. However they might be overlooking the effort that goes into summing and paraphrasing down a lot of fluff into actionable material to execute at the table, and how flexible the canvas is to do whatever it is you wish with the more straightforward template.

Gearhead thread but for /tg/

Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.

I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.

I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.

I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.

Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?

100% agree that everything digital is a huge distraction when playing.
Prep should be rules handouts, quick reference sheets, most common and important game processes, character sheets obviously, maybe a picture or two to establish the setting, maybe some maps if I'm feeling fancy.
Notes just need to be a few supporting words for each thing so I don't forget the most important details. Then a notebook and pen+eraser to take note during play.

I think it's really important to lower expectations on "production value" of games. Seems like people think GM:ing is setting up a one-man movie production for the players and thus will never even try doing it.

I steal a lot of ideas and plot points from TV shows and books. My players are normalfags that don't consume anything that isn't current and popular, so they don't know how much I steal. The few times they actually caught on, they were fine with it.
I'm just worried I am creating a bad habit. I have tons of original ideas as well, but I'm very demotivated, since a lot of adventures fell through for one reason or another and I had to come up with brand new concepts every time, so I have been stealing a lot more recently.

I like games that gloss over or ignore past events, because I like to get to the gameplay as soon as possible and play the game for the time agreed.
But, if the game itself sucks, I won't be interested no matter what. I need gameplay that engages me; plenty of character options to choose from, plenty of ways to synergize with my own character's kit and those of the other party members. Plenty of varied enemy types and behaviors to encourage different combat tactics.
If it's something like D&D or PbtA, where I need permission instead of being able to choose, I won't like it.

If you go to cons like GenCon, they'll teach you to play a new game and run you through a one-shot in a couple hours. Learning new systems is piss easy and even the complex ones can be grasped with a pregen character and a second sheet of paper that explains what your abilities do.

People who think every game needs hours of study and multiple read-throughs of 900 pages of material are fucking idiots who didn't even do that when they kinda learned D&D.

To be a little more clear on the hyperspecialization point, its not just that characters are specialized that's fine, its that investing into skills which you don't have high attribute in feels kinda shitty. If I want to have my mage be a little tougher by taking resilience, even assuming its a career skill IE in that characters "specialization" if I only have 2 brawn I have to put in 3 ranks before I really get a benefit out of it that feels impactful. Of course the triumphs from yellow dice are nice but I care about them and the slightly better odds from yellows way less than getting that extra green. and the amount of XP to get to 3 ranks is relatively a big investment. If you spend that XP on a skill you already have a high attribute in, the initial investment doesn't feel as shit because you're already rolling well and when you do start getting 3+ yellows you definitely notice how strong that is, So it really feels like for every character why wouldn't you just rush your most important skills to 5 before even considering other skills? The reason I think this is a problem though is because getting 4 to 5 yellow dice is really strong, its a powerlevel you should hit at some point but I think the game is served much better by having that come later and building a more well rounded character especially since 5 is supposed to represent total mastery of a subject, but the way the game works you're arguably encouraged to bump up your main skill or combat skill to 5 in the first few sessions or adventures.

Also on the topic of magic, I do like the system and its way better than the force power system but I think its a bit lacking or poorly thought out in some regards.
some of the big things for me are that I think the action economy doesn't really let you play with multiple sustained spells, so things like barrier or curse or augment which might be neat often get ignored if you're character is already doing something else that combat, especially since you could just spend your action blasting anyways. I'm not even sure what I'd do to fix that because the core book did have a fix with implements/talents that allowed effects to last the whole encounter, then the design team clearly realized that was too strong because those options didn't show up in terrinoth.
Speaking of implements, I think staff ends up being the one you use basically all the time and thats kinda boring. I wish there were both more implements with interesting effects and that implements and magic items in general were more common, which could be fixed by making stuff but lack of content is a general issue with the system sadly. I also do respect they were going for a certain theme with doing that for terrinoth but I do feel its not as fun.
some specific effects just weren't really thought out either, move on arcane attack is rather silly and I have no fucking clue why the additional summon modifier on summon applies to rivals at the same exact fucking rate as minions(which arguably need that modifier to even be effective it should probably just be default for them)

Lastly I wish there was more incentive to actually make specific spells, like picking a set of action+modifier and giving it a flavor. signature spell isnt nearly enough. I do think spontaneous casting is fun too but I think itd be nice to have more concrete spells for characters, and yes I've seen systems that make you pay xp for spells and I hate them. It was one of my big issues with the force trees in star wars. Sure you certainly were getting an equivalent result for XP spent to the rest of the party but it felt like if you focused them that you were ignoring your skills and talents which reasonably should still be advancing as well.

My party is about to take on the Redbrands in LMoP. They found the secret entrance to Tresendar Manor but might go in the front door anyway, and either way seems like it'd be fun. The nothic is looking to backstab Glasstaff and take his staff (which is cursed), so they might get to bypass a lot of the dungeon depending on how they play it. My fighter is itching to bash some skulls after a RP heavy session last time and there'll be plenty of time for that if the party chooses, though they might also end up playing cee lo with the Redbrands too.

We almost beat the 'Supposed to lose' boss in the tournament in our third session. The Leshy-piloted golems.

>Guardian gets his shield broken by a crit and they almost lose Round 1
>Champion/Commander handle round 2, it's a shield construct and two trip-mobs
>able to get through with minimal damage (After a battle medicine) and most resources intact
>Final battle is a 'Meant To Lose'
