Welcome to /2eg/, a thread dedicated to all things 2nd Edition D&D related - including settings, lore, modules, and derived systems (Alternity, Buck Rogers XXVc, For Gold and Glory, Hackmaster, Myth and Magic, and more).

Since 2e draws heavily from earlier editions, older modules are welcome too. Other media derived from AD&D (such as Infinity Engine video games) also has a home here.

It's what you play, not how you play it. RAW or homebrew, as long as your table is having fun, there's no wrong way to play.

There's a surprisingly complete 2e fan wiki for rules stuff, it's excellent for quick reference:
https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Advanced_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_2nd_Edition_Wiki

>And what prevents you from using the 1e mechanics that are missing?
You'll notice that it's not only a matter of missing mechanics, but also of mechanics that, for my personal play style, I consider broken, although it's a personal preference and I do understand that those rules work fine for other Anons. I'm not judging anybody.

This minor clarification aside, of course nothing prevents me from doing that.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.

stars make shitty vampires not just because of the masquarade but because you take someone on the near top of the food chain and tell them that now they are at the buttom of it

the ventrue talk about it a bit more in one of their books because imagine you embrace Theodore Roosevelt or Napoleon and tell them to shup and listen to Hardestadt's (who they never heard about) grand grand childe (who they also never heard about) because he is older and has more prestige!

we can see that in bloodlines where a movie star has to move into becoming a night club owner after being embraced into clan toreador and a model get's turned into a nosferatu and they are both -miserable-

But I remember I used massager (actual massager) with same intention and it didn't really work.
>>
>>97822782
Regular brush using glazes. It helps that the 3 colors are using the same base (the shadows are the same paint as the cloth with purple and dark blue mixed in). I mix a midtone between the two colors and then glaz it over the transition towards the shadow.

This is the first time I've had a good blend, but I think that using similar colors and doing a glaze with the mixed color works well, but there are probably better ways of doing it.

EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

Use history/politics stuff and mix in Conan, dying earth, lovecraft, Arthurian lore, and lotr.
>>
>>97822308
Well not using the same names and giving a fresh coat of paint already prevents most trouble occurring from people recognizing what the source is. The next step is, don't have a single source, use more than one and combine them.
What helps you with that is being exposed to multiple sources of media. Books, movies, tv series, animation and pieces of art like paintings, or even music sometimes, depends on what makes your creative wheels spin.

What are you struggling with?
>>
>>97822521
>What are you struggling with?
I think it's mostly me wanting to improvise a lot of stuff since when I do prepare most of the stuff I write before hand ends up being really irrelevant.
>>
>>97822550
Ah, you're not alone in that, many people here and outside struggle with that. You may find good value in changing your approach to prep.
Like you said, if you try to zoom in and prepare something specific you risk not using it or having to quantum ogre it. YMMV as different groups deal with hooks and agency in different ways, of course.
What I find to be really effective in situations where you have to be ready to come up with stuff on the fly is having a more vague prep done, and work on the details when the time comes.
You want to have them explore an area, write down just the main players, their agenda and personality. Add creatures, split them into factions. Give a basic framework of how they interact with each other, and maybe a few notable happenings that can come up if someone asks or does something.
The PCs enter a valley, there's orcs there. You know that the orcs raid caravans, so that's a possible random encounter. The PCs want to look into it, you know that elves have been trying to trade, but their leader is ill tempered, so there's also a patrol of angry elves around, and maybe they blame the PCs if they loot the wrong thing or act in some aggressive way. Stuff like that.
You can come up with stuff because you know what the premise is and how the world would react, but you didn't write down anything specific.
>>
>>97822308
I usually just start with a single dumb idea and then expand on it. Like for my current game, I wanted to do a fairy tale storybook adventure. So right away, I decided all the sentient beings are talking cartoon animal people. Then I was like, what if all terrain, plants, and animals were made of candy / desserts? The rest of it pretty much wrote itself from there

Simple rule to improve and balance wizards in OSR games: they can only memorize one casting of a given spell per day. You have 3 third level slots? You can cast one Fireball, not 2 or 3. Don't know any other 3rd level spells? Better go find some spellbooks. Hope you make your % chance to learn spell rolls (I won't bother addressing faggots who let wizards automatically learn new spells). God forbid you have to get more creative with your casting.

It's necromunda but with vehicle rule (forced too, game had to start with orks on vehicles), and modeling for advantage: Orks are on thin, oval bases like the one on green army men. So you can stack as many of them on a truck, but it they fell off they took damage.

They overproduced, there're lots of vehicles and accessories, even new boyz. Turn out ork didn't sell.

If you guys are playing relatively RAW, it is pointless. The transitions in the succession campaign are very poorly balanced (what a shock!) and moving from Cinderak to Temenos you guys should all just reset gangs, or at the very least do something like rehiring gang members ar 1250+400c. Despite your outlier scenario Cinderak isn't deadly enough to warrant the 2000c starting lists, and any new gangs joining in Temenos start with 1000+400. The gang rating and even crew differences will be in the 1000s for just standard gangs, not even considering new joinees or your situation, or the characters randomly joining up. The move from Temenos to Jardlan is much smoother as those are both 1000+400, but even then if you play RAW any continuing gang will just be radically higher rating compared to a starting gang.
Why a continuing gang also gets 250c on top of everything else when joining into the next campaign is beyond comprehension.

I think the primary reason why is because IGOUGO is primarily part of GW's Warhammer's game's identity like how paint pots are part of Citadel paint's brand identity.

I don't believe alternate activation will magically fix the wargame, but it is a small improvement.
