yeah that's only slightly better than finding a group that plays only ttr and dominion. find a different group. and if there isn't a better one making a meetup yourself is cheaper than buying a board game. be the change you want to see.

>Roll for the Galaxy. You're still building an engine but there's so much going on that the illusion holds up better
Roll and Race both end too early and unexpectedly. They are some of my favorite games but they have the "never really get to run your engine" problem where just as it comes on line the end condition is also present. That said the reason Roll is better/good is that there are a handful of ways you can chase an engine and the starting conditions really give you a base. Explore done properly is designed to let you tailor your empire whether it be yellow planets or military, it's all viable and makes each game feel different and interesting. And not that the end condition isn't necessary, usually another turn would be a huge VP swing we just always feel kind of blue balled when it's over.

Splendor is just oh you got 15 because you drafted the brown gem, wow.

The people who hate splendor completely ignore hate drafting and the very essence of duels/battle royales

I didn't like RDR (too long, not really COIN like imo) but I played Shadow Moon a couple times and enjoyed it a lot. There's a lot of tough choices around putting out disks, where, and taking them back plus all of the gumming up the works with card manipulation. The art is really nice too. Worth a buy if you have a group of 3 that aren't pussies.

If they would have made RDR with this art style, included a short and medium scenario, and made CORP and RECLAIMER less combat focused (ie like Syndicate in CL) it could have been the best COIN ever made.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.

Wars of Ozz reimagines Oz as a post-apocalyptic napoleonic war setting. The eponymous wizard taught the munchkins to use muskets and form up into ranks and the witches followed suit after getting their asses kicked by organized regimental midgets. It has rules for wizards and witches and units like skeletons or the flying monkeys, in addition to more normal napoleonic stuff like artillery and cavalry. It's very boomer coded though, if that matters.

“The strength of a wizard isn’t in how much magic they can muster, but how effective their magic is in effect”

What’s more powerful? The wizard who can blow up planets or the wizard who can control one (1) mind without any defence against it?

It's about how much mana the wizard can control.

Anyone can be taught how to cast a specific spell (given enough time), but the amount of energy you can manipulate as a conduit without exploding is set in stone (without the use of external factors such as artifacts or self-adjusting rituals).

Yes, your mind wizard can just take control of the planet explosion wizard, but if the later has a higher mana capacity, then eventually he could be taught how to control the minds of a thousand wizards.

Unless that one mind you control has absolute control of planets and their people, I'd go with planet destroying power. You can at least threaten people into submission. Imagine trying to defeat an army by just controlling a single mind. Unless we get to some bullshit anime strategy of controlling billions of minds, one after another for a fraction of a second at a time to at least hinder their ability to stand against you.

Serious question: What value do slaves actually have to your average PC? Like, I've never seen any PC / group actively engage in slavery because there never seems to be any substantial reward worth the effort.
It's like crafting or running a business, there's just no *point* in engaging with the mechanics because the rewards are puny.
How could you make it actually appealing to players? It's not like they can load up a ship and sail off to the ivory coast.

Recently I found some Humanity Fuck Yeah YouTube videos that use AI voice narration on my feed. After using them as background noise while cleaning my apartment I found that that most of them are more or less the same. Humans are the only ones who know how to fight/love sex/survive/etc. How can we save the genre or reinvent it so it isn't so stale?

>the Colonel is deliberately not working with the scientists to try start a conquest and deliberately ignoring their intel to do so.
I didn't have the patience for the third movie, is that something they establish there?
because Avatar 1 Quaritch was actually a reasonable guy, if clearly touched by war
we wasn't kill crazy, he was given a mission to protect the outpost against a wildly hostile environment, and he did his hardest to do that
he was also given orders to make mining operations happen, and he carries out those orders
but even then he only escalated when he felt he had to
you could see even he was a bit emotional when they burned the tree, but a job is a job

I rooted for humans in Avatar 1 because they had cool tech, they weren't fellated by the narrative like the navi, and because Quaritch was a legit badass
>>
>>97829580

Some of the best HFY is the stuff that you wouldn't really brag about. For example, I've read HFY stories where humanity was by far the smallest species in the galaxy, basically inchlings compared to most other aliens. This allowed us to do very unique roles, but being super short compared to everyone else isn't exactly something you're going to feel badass or brag about, so it's much less cringey.
>>
>>97829566
Yep, stay furious.
>>
>>97829734
speaking of things you wouldn't necessarily brag about
humans sweating making them uniquely suited long labor in hot environments would also not necessarily being something to brag about, hell you could even have allies be kinda disgusted with it especially if it turns out most aliens have far better sense of smell than us, but it would still makes humans pretty valuable when you need a bunch of engineers who can keep your poorly cooled engine going 'round the clock

I dunno, I think the line up is fair enough. The only one that I'd say is kinda egregious is Senka.
Yuna was pretty much an Akina cheerleader in Deluxe and also Hikari's friend so I imagine Akina does feel some good will towards her.
Kyohma is essentially Erika's caretaker, so surely Akina likes/respects him to some extent.

They at least had the good sense of not including like Suzune, Ruka, Mirei and Raika just because they were in the Deluxe together, and god forbid fucking Yuyu.

Setting is the only thing that makes sense for GW to do. They can't really do a narrative, because a narrative might require killing off characters every so often, and that would mean people won't buy the model of that character if they get discontinued or the rules become unavailable in future editions.

There's plenty of room for narratives within 40k, but it shouldn't itself be a larger narrative. If there has to be a larger narrative, the best way to do so is to frame everything as conflicting rumors and reports in order to maintain some of the mystery.

Popular Choices for Games:

Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.
