Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97710434>actively try to kill your playersEvery 5e game where I've seen DMs say they're gonna do this, it ends up being a comedy where the players curbstomp the big bad. 5e is a terrible system for anything but its intended purpose, and I wish more people would just fucking admit it.
>>97710434>Otherwise, actively try to kill your playersThat's plebbit-tier levels of retardation, showing that you don't understand anything about the OSR nor about DMing.I won't explain the OSR part because you're clearly too retarded and should just fuck off back to wherever you came from, you have nothing to contribute here except to make this place more stupid.About killing the PCs, to do that the DM need only say>a meteor strikes you, you're all dead, or if you want extra steps>you meet a hundred flying Tarrasques surrounded by an anti-magic field that negates all spells and magic items, roll initiative. It's not hard to do, and it has nothing to do with the OSR.Off you fuck.
>>97710430I have a metricised retroclone (or so) of Chainmail called "Scalemail" that I posted here a couple years back --which evolved eventually into the thing called Battle aXe. (another wargame for B/X) But I didnt know any other clones, otherwise I would have chosen another name. It's bound to be broken at some places as the scope is much larger compared to Battle aXe, anon. I released it after realising that I wont be single-handedly able to playtest all probabilities. But it should be okay, in general. I hope it will be of use to someone someway.
>>97710264>>97710430>>97710490In case anybody is interested, I've uploaded the afore-mentioned "metricised clone of Chainmail" called Scalemail from 2015ish here:https://www.sendspace.com/file/oe8in1This one is really faithful to the base/mass combat rules of Chainmail, but it doesn't have the man-to-man, fantasy combat rules, or fantasy units. Since those didn't need to be metricised, I guess the guy who did this didn't feel it was necessary to include them. Not sure who the author is, or where I got it from originally.
>>97710522That's the thing I made, anon. I'm the same guy It eventually evolved into this:https://hexhunt.itch.io/battleaxeIt was my initial attempt to extract the "essence" out of Chainmail to make it more beginner friendly, an an effort to understand the system better.
So basically I want to start running different kinds of settings/scenarios with friends.None of us have ever been too into board games, it is primarily me that kind of brings them up and has the most experience but still nothing substantial. Now the thing is, I want us to start running some more specific settings for example stuff like The Dark Tower books by Stephen King as a setting and the likes. My question is, because D&D requires a lot of homebrewing, is something like GURPS the best more universal ruleset for wanting to try out a lot of differently themed campaign settings or is there something better than GURPS? And if so what edition?
Maid RPG.
>>97699417That and FATAL are good universal systems for the whole family.
>>97682754GURPS is good. I think their combat is overly granular, admittedly. But unless you're buying a "Powered by GURPS" game, it's more of an "RPG Building Kit" than a prebuilt RPG.
>>97707942>it's more of an "RPG Building Kit"I see this leveled at GURPS a lot but I still don't think it's true, it works on certain assumptions and definitely has its own flair. Just because it doesn't have much of a bestiary (unless you count the umpteen splatbooks) doesn't make it not an RPG
>>97710532The best way I can describe GURPS for tourists is GURPS is the "UNREAL engine." The system has add-ons for different systems and styles of play. However the engine is the same.

The compendium scam, removal of list-building, FOMO-driven business model, fucking shapes, ridiculously stupid and convoluted LoS-related rules - it was so bad it sill poisons the current edition in its core. I still play KT basically to stay in touch with the local Warhams players but for game to be enjoyable it has to be scrapped altogether and rebuild from scratch. >Inb4 m-muh plasma spam in KT18Yeah people were using broken shit in hyper-competitive games - nothing to be surprised with. Pretty sure the administration isn't taking part in a psyop to boost his Dragon Ball Z character because they want young kids to aspire to be some Japanese guy. End of the day I'm just pointing out to him that he has made this the Gohan general of /tg/, and it's probably not even about Jumpchain at this point since he is doing this to try and make some sort of change happen irl. Legitimate question: Do the few male Howling Banshees there are get a flat chest armour plate or do they just get the standard breasted plate and wear it though it's hollow? I think the latter would be cool to keep the outward image of a bunch of vicious female super soldiers killing people. Because if a dude joins them to begin with it's because he exhibits the finesse and precision they want, so the guy would already be acting kinda feminine, no?I don't know where I could look into to get an official answer to this inquiry

Wanted to get a thread going about calendar megadungeons. Some blogger made a thing about it a couple years ago but it's existed for much longer. The premise is simple: You write a dungeon room every day. Each month of rooms make up a floor of your dungeon. Never skip a day, but you can go back and edit as much as you want. Why? Writing everyday is good for you. Helps you stay creative and exercise your brain. Also, this is deceptively challenging. If you've written a lot of dungeons or mega-dungeons before, you may find that this forces you to stretch some creative muscles you'd forgotten about. If you've never written a mega-dungeon before because you found it too daunting, this breaks it up into little bite sized chunks. Some variations that people seem to like:Each week's rooms are a cluster and directly tie into each other. Layout can be whatever you want.Draw your rooms directly on a calendar so that the rooms vaguely fill the space (see pic). Write a room 6 days a week and then use the 7th to design a unique monster, faction, or artifact that ties into the cluster or one of the rooms you wrote that week.
Had a couple people ask me what the "themes" of my dungeon are and I'm not sure what they want to hear. Is it like an English lit question? Themes like the cycle of hubris, regret, and self-deception or the folly of pride? Or do they want to hear about the ice labyrinth?
>>97707347Not entirely sure but probably both the concepts as story elements or compelling background and physical characteristic. >Ice labyrinth themes>isolation, puzzles, stasis, thaw>opaque walls, stalactites and stalagmites with frozen captives in them, ice flow river I tend to use it as a cluster of ideas to keep in mind when brainstorming or keying rooms. Doesn't have to be complex or high concept, last one I had was >ziggurats, swamp decay, raid >underwater caverns, surface temples, cult wars
>>97660336>>97660364>>97677870A skyscraper megadungeon can work, especially if you take into account that multiple different firms utilize different floors and parts of floors, and the scumminess of a cyberpunk world can mean that stairwells and elevators are limited in where they go, noise isolation between floors (to prevent bugging and corporate espionage) keeps fighting noise from being noticed, and security services are per-firm, contracted with very limited scopes. There's all your contrivances for why some dickheads shooting up floor 3 doesn't put the whole building on lockdown - the building is more of a necessary evil of space savings with different "commerce tribes" using it for their operations, not some kind of unified hive.Or you could do things like having giant, mostly-horizontal (+/- 5 floors up and down from ground at most) sprawling "abandoned" complex that was originally some sort of megamall or manufactory and has been repurposed by different gangs, squatters, hermits, and other social misfits. Think like, urbex youtube channels in derelict high tech buildings but "shored up" instead of being full of black mold. There's a little more room for parlay in that sort of thing too since not everyone will be necessarily hostile, or hates their neighbors more than outsiders.
>>97707347>what are themesfucking retardsAre you too stupid to understand basic analysis or did you write a brain dead series of rooms?>Is "Ice Labyrinth" a theme?jesus christ
>>97709385I don't know man, if I asked somebody to tell me about their mega dungeon, I think "one level is an ice labyrinth" is more useful/descriptive than "it's about the cycle of hubris, regret, and self-deception". But this hobby has a fucking mountain of fart-huggers so who knows

Yes I'm sure sometimes a heretic does something actually good and a faithful person does something bad (though we have no lore on a heretic doing a good thing) the exception proves the rule. As I saw someone say a while a go: "Some of the faithful do bad stuff and it's usually out of desperation. The faithless/fallen all do bad stuff and they're the belligerents"
Various AD&D/OSR threads are full on cancer with autism shitfights and gay nonsense.I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while. So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI. Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). I don't need any modules and minimizing splats is ideal, so if you feel like any of these "cannot be enjoyed" without X extra book(s) please include that information as well.
>>97710422these grogs ultimately don't like D&D, they want to autistically consume it to satisfy their hyperfixations and need for structure, and get furious when they see that as under attack.Any reasonable person (or even autistic people that don't have that form of it) can look at D&D and realize there's no true "right" way to play, only wrong ways for particular tables. Trying to force your vision upon a game as open and fluid as D&D will always fail because you have utterly 0 influence over someone elses table. You cannot compell them to run the game a certain way, and neither can they do so to you.So this drama is ultimately a utter shame.
>>97710336If the system isn't the primary focus, why did you pick these 4 to choose from? The OP mentions retroclones, are you looking to improve some section of your experience or gain cred by running "cooler" old systems?
>>97710186I enjoyed BECMI enormously over the years (Played sicne 1982). Comparatively few options when played "as is". Race-as-class simplified a lot, although it did make halflings (sort of like a Thief but max level 8 without much compensation) and dwarves (Fighter maxing out at Lvl 12 instead of 36. Make what you will of that) ruleswise superflous. AD&D suffered badly from poor structure of the books, but was, mainly and mostly, similar to BECMi but with lots more spells. A proper editor instead of booze and cocaine would have saved Gygax a lot of trouble.AD&D2e was a nicely cleaned up version of AD&D with far more options, and even more spells. Not bad at all if you want something with wider range in terms of classes and races and on-weapon proficiencies. That being said, I have had fun anyway, with all of the above.
>>97710509I like race-as-class because I find races as stat boosts to really annoy me. I am a little displeased to hear BECMI makes dwarves and halflings feel less useful/relevant.Would you say the addition of more spells make AD&D deeper or more interesting, or does it just increase Magic User/Cleric paperwork?
>>97710524I lean heavily towards making it more paperwork-heavy.A lot of the spells did more-or-less the same things but with different names. Damage, mobilty enhancing/impeding, healing, scrying and so on.Sure, types of damage (cold, fire et.c.) did play some role but neither me nor my players actually really found it made much difference. Why was Ice Storm a lvl 4 spell but Fireball Lvl 3 despite doing, essentially the same thing, that is to say cause damage over an area?

What's the verdict? Is it a cool alternative to dnd?
An important question to ask when determining if DLE games are for you is'Do you enjoy campaigns that won't finish before you retire, and combats that run over several sessions (while your character is unconscious)?'If so, stick with PF/DnD.Otoh, if you like fast, dirty, deadly fights and campaigns that will be done by summer, then Demon Lord might work for you.A campaign runs from level 0 to level 10.There is no XP to track - the campaign structure is designed so that PCs level up after each adventure. If you want to stretch it out you could vary this at your table, do two adventures per level, etc.But I don't know why you would want to do that, there are so many character options, just do a new campaign with new PCs (or play something else). Most of the modules are standalone, but there are some published campaign frames.Of note, there is a official Freeport campaign, so if you have played Freeport before, you could play it again to get a before/after feel for how the Demon Lord engine affects play.
