>>97230596>rules and rolls for the same exact situation change every 5 minutes>at no moment you know what you can and cannot do>also quantum ogres everywhereI always give 3 sessions chance to everybody be GMs or players be friends or someone I just met. I think is fair, but once beyond that threshold just bail out, no game is better than no fun
>>97230596>>97230753Not reading the rules is only a problem if you make it one. I ran a three year campaign of Dark Heresy and mostly just checked the armory and the occasional talent/trait for equipping NPCs, but mostly just vibed in whatever gear I could think of. I didn't worry about balancing encounters since I knew come tight spot the players would quickly flick through the book to find some rule that let them get out a spot, or just outmanouver me by actually knowing what their talents did.I got to focus in designing the adventurers and players got to pull cool moves on unexpecting baddies.A year later I finally read through the rules and realized that kino stuff like 1d5 weapons doing more crits, scattered grenades needing line of sight (or bouncing off walls), random mooks doing crits just like PCs, vehicles not having HP (just module damages until useless) or most of the psychic disciplines being actually from RT, BC or splatbooks was a real surprise to me.
>>97230596This holds to most games by <30 year olds these days, doubly so for D&D as they played some vidya and saw critical role and decided they play the ttrpg without bothering to learn the actual rules. When you point out how the actual rules say they go "uhh acshually the DM decides how the rules go". It's irredeemable shit all over.

Guys, I want to talk about HELLPIERCERS. I bought this game a bit ago because I thought it looked cool, and I've read it, and I don't know enough people weird enough to play it with me, and I can't stop thinking about it, and I just have to talk about it with someone.>First up: what the fuck is Hellpiercers? And why do you spell it in all-caps? Do you have autism?HELLPIERCERS is a tactical tabletop RPG developed by SandyPug Games alongside a few people who did some dev work on some of the Lancer supplements. It casts the PCs as gnostic demigod heroes and veterans of the War in Heaven, who aided the forces of humanity in regaining their stolen gnosis and slaying the Demiurge, his Archons, and angelic generals. Having conquered Heaven and liberated the mortal plane from the tyranny of false divinity, they now cast their eyes downward, into Hell, where countless human souls remain enslaved by the demon lords below. Hellpiercers, armed with their god-slaying weapons, clad in armor forged from the corpses of angels, lead a war of liberation against the forces of Hell, to free the enslaved souls of every human who has ever lived.I spell it in all-caps because it's title is rendered in all-caps. I'm pretty sure I'm not autistic, but I've never been tested, so who even fucking knows?
Is it fun solo?
>>97235113>NOOOOOOOOOO! YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT RPGS ON /TG/
>>97235138If it were, I'd be playing it right now. As it stands, it's hard to wrangle four other people into the same time slot to play an obscure game with a tense tactical ruleset that asks players to think about the long-game right from the beginning.
>>97235095>It casts the PCs as gnostic demigodStopped reading right here. Into the trash it goes.Granted, I should have stopped here> people who did some dev work on some of the Lancer supplements. But I was feeling generous today.

Before I read this, a big question.Do you have non-mech rules? Tanks and infantry?
>>97234361No specific rules for them, but the type of system where they can be easily implemented. Tanks might be able to fire weapons equivalent to and just as dangerous as mechs, but they wouldn't have any of the colorful options like the ability to make reactions. Mostly just to keep mechs the focus of the setting. And yea there's an additional rules-extremely-lite system for non-mech activity for when groups aren't fighting in their mechs. I'm not very interested in infantry units on the battlefield with mechs, but just logically, that would be possible if the infantry unit had 1 space of movement and the largest caliber weapons they could fire did the bare minimum damage of 1d4
>>97235146Gotcha. I ask cause combined armed is my favorite part of battletech.
>>97235149Don't have experience with combined arms but it's got me thinking about non-mech units in combat. I personally think that mechs should be the focus of the system, but a section for non-mech units might be a good addition, even if it's just to show how much stronger mechs are in comparison.

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle. If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

>>97233835I'm a different anon, but here's what I can think of:1) The last enemy left, the last attack left him with only one HP, and the judge, for speed, declared the monster dead, thereby retroactively fudging his HD roll for that monster.2) The random encounter roll revealed the lair of a red ancient dragon in a location where such a lair would be extremely illogical, and the judje fudged dice, causing either no encounter at all, or the ancient dragon is still there, but flying past somewhere very high in the sky.3) The Judge messed up/forgot something, and the enemy attacked weaker than they could have, and in the next few rounds, judje fudges dices a little, to make monser become stronger compensate for the mistake, and vice versa, someone who was stronger than they already are becomes weaker than they already are for a few rounds to compensate for the mistake.
>>97235163Why not have the enemy in 1 surrender or attempt to flee rather than die for no reason? Creates a more interesting scenarioIf a lair of a red ancient dragon would be illogical to roll, why have it on the roll table? It isn't a fudge to say the dragon isn't in its lair at all, but the lair is a dungeon of its ownThat's an understandable reason

>>97222678why are you on the board for discussing games if you don't want to discuss games?
>>97222512All fauna and terrain is made of some kind of food. All water features (rivers, lakes, etc.) are filled with milk instead of water, and milk has the inherent magical property of being permanently self-chilling, and it is always clean and safe to drink. All sapient animals are "normal" (except that they talk and wear clothes). All non-sapient animals are made of food.Pretty much nothing smaller than a mouse exists, so no insects, parasites, or other such creepy jeebies, unless they can be made whimsical. Bumblebees specifically get an exception, and are actually flying jolly ranchers. Giant versions of insects can exist as monsters. When a monster is defeated, it vanishes in a puff of magic (colored appropriately for the monster's theme) and a burst of rainbow sprinkles, and leaves behind some gumdrops (the universal currency of the realm). Our heroes begin their adventure in the quaint hamlet of Coldstone. It is under the protection of the Local Lady, Miss Wendy Wingspan the heron, the friendly, nervous, and somewhat absent-minded administrator who says "great goosefeathers!" a lot, and wears huge circular spectacles. She is rarely seen without her aide at her side, the good Mister Edgar Etchingcroft, the stern and dour yet compassionate bearded vulture with impressive eyebrows, an adorable vest, and a monocle.

>>97234730It is on my shelf, I do very much enjoy it for what it is.In saying that the answer to your question is complicated. Moeller was an mtg artist as a career for a long time and is still afaik a newer designer. His approach so far has been riffing ideas from minis wargaming rules and adapting them. Burning Banners was different but that's because it was riffing directly on Divine Right. It is overly simple to the point the base game would be unplayably boring if not for the artwork and scale. But take the rules system and put it on a normal map with normal art and no one would bother, it's wargamevault slop tier rulesNow add in the advanced rules and it becomes more interesting but also more clumsy, more chaotic and unpredictable, and much more slow. The game is unplayable at 4p because its just so dull and so slowCompare it to beginner wargames like Simonitich's Salerno, and you have something still very easy, still very rewarding if you practice and try, and has enough nuance to the rules that it isn't just checkers to other games' chessIf the price isn't right I don't feel its worth it. And honestly at the price I paid for the physical, I wish it was just paper maps and 1/4 of the price because it was like 150cad which was dumb as fuck considering the gameplay is 6/10 at bestDo I still like it and think its worth playing ,sure. And ill probably buy the exp. But if a competitor came along and made a version with an experienced designer who had a creative approach to getting a bit more out of the game, it would absolutely push BBs shit deeply in
