What are the funniest wargame mechanics you've ever encountered?

Less than unintended, the white scars player had several options at the time.
Khan would have let him outflank on a side edge, ruining the conga line plan.
Any tank could have tank shocked the kroot when they entered, forcing them to move and making the unit contract to maintain coherency and opening a way for the rest of the force. A rhino could have saved the game.
He did neither of these things. The moral is Dawn if War deployment and null deployment are bad.

maps and mapmaking. more specifically, there's something that's been bothering me for a while now. There are endless skirmish-scale settlement-scale and topographic-scale square grid mapmaking tools online, and that's great.
There's plenty of topography-scale hexgrid mapmakers too, presumably because of D&D's ancient use of hexgrids for overland travel. and that's great too.
There arent many hexmakers ive found for settlement scale maps, but i've had some luck torturing them out of the battletech mapmaker in the megamek software, or other videogames that generously offer to print the output
but
for the life of me i cannot find a decent skirmish-scale hexgrid mapmaker. i must have tried a dozen programs by now, but the ones that offer hexgrids are either borderline unuseable or just put a hexagonal overlay over a square grid. it's ridiculous that after decades of computer tools for TTRPGS the best i've found is GIMP where i have to draw the damn things by hand. Not to mention the endless enshitification of google makes it harder and harder to find niche programs to match what i need.

what are you anons using to create your maps?
do you know of any decent skirmish-scale hexmappers (that are free, or at least worth the price)?
what do you think of maps in general, do you even use them?

i'll share any spare maps i have within the size limit to get the ball rolling

Here's one of mine, made in DungeonPainter (a primitive free version of something available on steam). The structure is the inside of a pyramid with dead-ends placed strategically to lure would-be thieves into traps, packs of skeletons or both. my personal favourite was the flammable oil room.

it's okay as a program, but the hexgrid is virtually unworkable.

That makes sense on both parts. I just wish they'd put more thought into SOME kind of coherent theming for instead of Lore instead of just going "oh well, sufficiently smart people are indistinguishable from wizards and miracle workers anyway" and given Occultists something to do other than bother spirits. Like bother Behemoths. Or I don't know, infuse magical powers into animals, do something with demesnes/geomancy, make thaumaturgy relevant.

Infernal, Sidereal and to a lesser extent Occult won bigly because the writers weren't afraid to think outside the box for them. Even if Infernal Occult's case it was 80% copying from old Yozi Charms and then turning around and going "they're not Yozi Charms anymore ;^)" . I'm not saying you have to go out of your way to be esoteric for every Exalt ability necessarily, but that Occult in particular needs to be a lot more versatile and Lore a little more focused for everyone else.

I guess most people having relatively unimaginative War charmlines is the cherry on top. Again, W for Infernals/Sidereals.

do you use character portraits in your game?

Anon, I pointed out that ai art looking boring and unmemorable is imo far worse than any of it looking ugly, since I get that ugly is in the eye of the beholder anyways.
>>
>>97230620
>do you use character portraits in your game?
I find visual aids help my players and myself visualize things better. Also we use Roll20 so I like to represent people with tokens when I can.
>how do you get them? do you use any websites\generators?
I get like 90% of my character art from here, though the character art threads have been poor quality - if high quantity - this year.
>do you use AI? how do you prompt it?
I try to avoid using AI images if possible, partially on principle and partly because they mostly look like shit.
>>
>>97242058
Muh climate change is absolutely right though, AI's wasting immense amounts of natural resources to achieve exactly fuck all. That said I still slop from time to time, most things I either crudely draw myself or just describe but there are e.g. certain playable humanoid types I make slop of to demonstrate

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

Shroud from Dispatch gave me the idea to have a villain who gives his villains cybernetic implants, especially ones that enhance their existing powers, in my supers setting. What supers system does such implants/augmentations best Abby why? Also, what kinds of implants make sense for different kinds of powers without just directly copying the characters in the game? For a speedster for example, I can see increasing their senses so they can better react to things at super-speed, for example, what do you think?

>C&C is everything 5 x and 3.x shouldve been.
The second half of that sentence is funny in that C&C was 3.0 lite with not a lot of 3.5 influence. D&D 3.x can't have been more C&C like because rule bloat was a TSR thing since the days of AD&D 1e through 2e. It survived due to continuity of development by people working at the bloatiest stage of 2e who already felt they were debloating D&D. If TSR had kept going 4e might never have happened like it did, due to the vidya aspect being inspired by corporate, but there's practically no chance there would have been a leaner rule set like C&C did to 3.x.

Rule bloat was a thing even in OD&D, with even Gygax lamenting how the game had become bloated beyond its original 3-booklet form, and Basic being devised as a way to slim it down.

I refuse to believe Halo Flashpoint is even a 10th as successful as Mantic claims. In terms of online, easy to find metrics it has:

3100 people as part of its sub(P)reddit.
2100 or so people as part of Facebook Groups.
No one discussing it on Twitter gets many likes/comments/retweets.
No one big or well known talks about/plays it on Youtube.

Yet it's one of the fastest growing and more popular tabletop games to come out recently?
I don't buy it.
I don't hate the system, but I am baffled by Mantic's ability to get away with lying about how successful this game is.

You’re underestimating the GW dominance. It doesn’t take a lot to make the top 10. Its also a perfect game alot of people are buying Flashpoint that are not tabletop gamers or buying it to paint alone or just have the box. Halo collectors are actually quite a big market especially since Star Wars died.

Its a phenomenally good game I haven’t touched it since last January but I fucking loved it and if I take a notion to play a minis game i’ll be digging it out.
If the retards had dropped a strong Covie box alongside the Spartan edition it would be huge in my area we had real traction on release but we did one tournament in January and despite it being really good it just died largely because the Elite players got smoked. Yes they’re strong in objective games but you needed two sword elites to match the Spartan meta and I for one couldn’t afford two Spartan editions to do that. The Banished box was a huge dud that didn’t sell locally or I suspect very well in general but that no dount that was 343 pressure to push infinite. It’s a great game and i’m looking forward to get back into it when theres Grunts, Jackals and Hunters.
Pic related my nail varnish drowned Chief.

If GC had dropped before Fleet Battles it would have done gangbusters. Instead it dropped around Halo 5 when Halo fans were dropping the series for other things and then like a year later Spartan Games was gone.

Fleet Battles was cool but it was appealing to a tiny demographic.

It's very slowly evolving away from multiplayer and into a more general Halo universe skirmish game with the last two releases being Brutes and ODSTs, and apparently they've got Grunts and suchlike in the pipeline as well. I get the impression that they wanted to make a general Halo game from the start, but having it based on the multiplayer made it both an easier sell from the licensing standpoint (direct tie-in with the current video game) and a smaller initial investment for making the game what with all players using the same pool of miniatures.

Remains to be seen if they make any dramatic changes away from the multiplayer arena setup in terms of gameplay for future expansions, we'll just have to wait and see.

Gundam Assemble has way more motion in my LGS than Halo Midpoint

IM is... workable. A pal pulled me into a game recently, some of its stuff is streamlined from the FFG stuff in a good way (namely how stats work), some of it's streamlined in a shit way that I hate.
Wang is the skunge you find growing inside a rusty disposal. I think maybe three guys in all of time have ever played and liked it.
My heart will always belong to Rogue Trader. God, those were the days.

My bad then, but like every thread there was the usual bait "now that the dust has settled..." question. As far as how is it? Dangerously mediocre. It works, but it's very generic and shallow

That's your bias then, so of course you think IM is subpar. Personally I think RT sucks ass, and Shadowrun was my very first RPG so I know and welcome crunch. It just has so many systems that don't work well, so much asinine bloat, niche shit to remember like gear that gives bonuses only on the first turn of combat, and I always hated how restrictive the old FFG class system is. In any case, most folk here are like you, so that's why this general is doomed to a slow demise. There will never be a RT 2e.

I remember an anon saying his Rogue Trader flagship is half plated in auramite.
How do you even get auramite? Its there a source you can buy off the Imperium or can you only scavenge it off custodes armour?

Rolling multiple dice to manifest psychic powers is more fun than just making a d100 check.
I don't care about streamlining and QoL improvements, DH2e made psykers less fun.

A goofy Flumph figure. I actually kinda like it a lot, it's not something I would have bought for myself but it looks so stupid I can't not smile when I see it.
