Alright you cheeky FUCKS.
With more and more testing I"m settling into the true Skeletons gameplan: Tested more aggressive, more interactive, more hard-hitting, more value plans against many lists now and have felt things out.
It's a tempo deck. Ruthless Aggression era shit. Somewhere between Sligh and Midrange. Focus on speed, with interaction to chop through walls and recursion to brute force our way through everything else.
Unfortunately, that means Roots is out. It may still be a viable sideboard option against decks that are trying to grind you out, though. Being able to Scrabble our own creatures to get Plants was fun.

The tempo setup means Mournwillow becomes more valuable. Scrabbling Claws gets artifacts into the 'yard. Case is an Enchantment that dumps itself. We have instants and sorceries and creatures, and Fields. We can hit Delirium sometimes, whichi s cool. What matters most though is one word: "Haste"

I like the deck. More upgrades to come!
Great idea on the Roots. Sad it didn't work out, just felt like a dead card more often than not.

Mutavault is a top consideration, but we really want fast lands that can reach the colors we need.

Good suggestion. Will test.

The 5 mana is just too slow for maindeck but we absolutely have it in the sideboard. The card is cracked for blowing the fuck out of midrange decks, they just can't compete.

Mournwillow is extremely good.
Rot Farm Skeleton mills alongside our spray of artifacts and enchantments mean we easily get Delirium, and that blcok clause really, seriously shits on people who finally think they have some breathing room.

Sad to see Roots go as this is another plant in the maindeck, but honestly as far as midrange wincons go I think Swarming just does what Roots is doing far, far better.

Alright then my boner bros, my marimba aficionados!
I think Skeletons is approaching a real, finalized proper testworthy decklist.
I underestimated Skeletal Swarming as just a pure Overrun effect, but a few more tests with it in the main and one "I swing for 60 with trample" later, I think a 1-of is in the main deck is comfortable. We can always tutor for it with Case, so we don't need more.
A single Tinybones has also made the cut. He's good at grinding, what can I say.

Going back and forth between Scrabbling Claws and Deathrite Shaman. Claws has the lead right now as it can Crime even when an opponent's graveyard is empty.

Hopefully I can have a full sideboard and primer/matchups report in time for Halloween.

>>93793985
>I think if you play 12× 2/1 skeles then you can have at least goldfish of 1 drop into 2 1 drops into corpses for 14 damage on turn 3. And the rest of the deck can be dedicated for winning a longer game if that doesn't happen.
I agree in part and am always fiddling with pieces. Moss-Pit is a very tentative slot and Gutterbones might end up settling into the list in the end.

If Gutterbones had the "Can't block" restriction instead of ETB tapped, it'd be a no-brainer. But Moss-Pit's kicker dumping out a 6/5 with haste has one many games already. Things are getting tight now, so every inclusion is a sacrifice somewhere else.
>>

-2 Mournwillow
+2 Gutterbones

Yeah, now that you mention it we probably do want a few more 1 drops. Gutterbones sucks that he can never haste out with Corpses of the Lost, but fast curve-outs more often probably make up for that.
A 3-mana haster vs a 1-mana 2/1 is similar in terms of speed, the 2/1 winning out slightly.

Mournwillow's blocking negation is huge for breaking through, but the benefit of having Demonic Tutor stapled to the ass end of some of your creatures means we can just run one of it and grab it when it is relevant.
>>
Ignore the above list. The thoughts about faster skeles came in while I was posting it, and prompted me to make a few slight adjustments.

Moss-Pit is good as a 5-mana haymaker, but we don't need four of them. Those kinds of cards can sit comfortably in the 3-of slot, being found later in the game as needed. And a bit more rejiggering as noted above.

Thanks for all the thoughts bros. Still needs a lot of tests, and a real Sideboard, but it's feeling more like a real deck with each update.

Eerie is parasitic because there's a 90% chance we'll never see another room past this set. But that's okay because Eerie also functions like Constellation
>>
>>93795718
Every set has parasitic mechanics nowadays. If WotC invents a new mechanic, designs cards around that mechanic that don't work with non-mechanic cards, and then never touches the mechanic again, the mechanic has taken from the set without giving anything in return. It's parasitic.
>>
>>93795743
Eerie isn't parasitic because it functions even if they don't print more room card. Parasitic refers to mechanics like flying and tribal cards that only care about a specific type which require more similar cards to be balanced. Eerie being an ability word makes it more likely to be printed in a future set without the eerie name since every set has enchantments.
>>
>>93795788
Fun fact: in casual games, if you're strictly following the rules, you can't enter a dungeon if you don't actually literally own that offical dungeon card. If an opponent has a card that makes other players enter a dungeon (like, for example, an initiative effect) and you're not prepared for that, you're shit out of luck and don't get to dungeon crawl.

This is not true for tournament games, however. The additional tournament rules allow dungeons to be represented by anything, like how tokens are.
>>
JOKES ON THEM I WAS ONLY PRETENDING
>>
>>93795788
The last true parasitic mechanic was the ability word Corrupted from All Will Be One as it specifically requires poison counters which it can't provide. Most set care about mechanics in the set they debut leading to parasitic design but it is mostly for limited.

Is running Into the North, Rampant Growth, Sakura Tribe Elder, Cultivate, Flare of Cultivation and Kodama's Reach in every deck I have with any Green overkill? 6 cards seems reasonable for mana fixing.
>>
>>93795891
Flying is parasitic in the sense that it requires other flying cards in the same set for it to work as intended and green specifically calls it out by name with reach and its destruction spell. First strike on the other hand works fine as one off due to it only acting as a deal damage first mechanic compared to flying and horsemanship working as an unblockable unless you have another card with the same mechanic.
>>
>>93795949
Hurricane doesn't make flying parasitic, flying makes Hurricane parasitic
>>
>>93795822
>Parasitic refers to mechanics like flying and tribal cards that only care about a specific type which require more similar cards to be balanced.

What? That's not what parasitic means. A parasitic mechanic is something that only really works with cards in a particular set/block and future sets likely won't revisit it, at least not in a reasonable time frame. Energy is one of the most egregious examples. Until MH3, an energy deck was, by necessity, mostly cards from KLD/AER because that's where all the cards that generated and used energy came from.
Flying is definitely not a parasitic mechanic, it's a fucking evergreen keyword. Tribal effects can be somewhat parasitic depending on how specific the tribe is. Like, human/merfolk/zombie/goblin/elf/angel/dragon/etc. tribal effects are generally not parasitic because those tribes show up all the time, but something like ninja tribal can be somewhat parasitic since ninjas only show up rarely outside of Kamigawa.
What makes Eerie parasitic is the reference to Rooms. They're not gonna print a card with "Eerie" in a set with no Rooms, even if it would still technically function. If you strip out the reference to Rooms, then you've cured the parasitism, but you've also just printed Constellation by another name.
>>
>>93795962
Flying is printed on so many green destruction spells because they realized early on how parasitic flying can be. Hurricane isn't really parasitic since it can act as a player damage spell with the damage flying creatures being trinket text.
>>
>>93795949
The trick here is that flying and associated effects can and have been printed consistently since introduction. Horsemanship was only printed in one janky set and then on a couple meme cards two decades later. Theoretically, horsemanship could've been made non-parasitic if it got as much continued attention as flying, but it didn't.
>>
>>93796000
>>93796012
Fun times playing a heavily Shadow-based black deck in casual games during Odyssey block and having new people read Tempest cards and go "what the fuck?!"
>>
>>93795983
The exact definition of Parasitic is "It refers to a mechanic or theme that only works with cards from the set it is in." Flying is parasitic in design since it doesn't work without other flying cards to keep balanced but since it is evergreen it can't become parasitic compared to its copy Horesmanship.

Eerie isn't parasitic because it will always work with all future sets with the room text being made for limited and just being trinket text in any other set. Ability words are for drafters to quickly see cards the share a mechanic but not a keyword.
>>
>>93796061
You're utilizing two different measures of parasitic at once. Going by both definitions, Flying would be parasitic in design, but non-parasitic in practice due to being evergreen. Eerie is non-parasitic in design due to also working with regular enchantments, but parasitic in practice because of the reference to Rooms. You call it "trinket text" but that's exactly why it'll never get printed in a set without Rooms. You'll just get Constellation (with or without the ability word) instead because WotC isn't going to bother with the Room text.
>>
>>93796138
This entire conversation is making me wonder how subjective the term is
>>
>>93796153
It's not subjective, it's being used incorrectly.
>>
>>93796138
For what it matters I agree with your take and it should be the default take that whatever things are in practice should determine be how the word parasitic is used.

Cards that referenced Eldrazi were parasitic after ROE until years later when Eldrazi started showing up everywhere at which point Eldrazi ceased to be parasitic. Eldrazi may be parasitic still as much as cards that reference zombies are but holy shit nobody is going to agree with that definition of parasitic. And anybody who does can fuck off.

>a mechanic or theme that only works with cards from the set it is in

That definition is clear. Key examples are energy and arcane. The one guy is trying to extend it to designs that COULD be parasitic if they were relegated to a single set. To his credit, he is kinda speaking to a nuance in the term. That is, the difference between something parasitic largely because the flavor is overly specific to the set and something that's parasitic simply because it got dropped, even if the flavor is broad. I suppose you could also have a third category of something that's parasitic because it's too big and heavy of a mechanic to casually include outside of a dedicated set (e.g. energy).

There's no saving it short of starting a whole new game with new cards and having a design philosophy where you absolutely do not have power creep or pie breaks, and you hard limit the max color a deck can be to 3 with explicit and ironclad rules about dual and tri color decks (set amount of creatures, only allied tris, etc).

Basically a bunch of shit that would make contemporary magic babies shit and piss their pants, even if it was an offshoot self contained brand that allowed no cross over outside of extremely rare well designed cards.

Magic is a 30 year old dumpster fire. Even if you extinguished the flames all you'd be left with is a bunch of soggy garbage. There is no saving it.
>>
>>93792775

this is a really dumb question that got me curious after watching a video showing people cheating in tournaments, if in a game I see the opponent shuffling my deck in a weird way, like the cards are almost visible, feels like he's holding the top cards in place, am I allowed to cut my own deck before drawing or no, after the opponent shuffle the way it is is what I get?
>>
>>93796455
"From the Tournament Rules (May 13, 2024—Outlaws of Thunder Junction)

3.10 Card Shuffling
Decks must be randomized at the start of every game and whenever an instruction requires it. Randomization is defined as bringing the deck to a state where no player can have any information regarding the order or position of cards in any portion of the deck. Pile shuffling may not be performed other than once each at the beginning of a game to count the cards in the deck.

Once the deck is randomized, it must be presented to an opponent. By this action, players state that their decks are legal and randomized. The opponent may then shuffle it additionally. Cards and sleeves must not be in danger of being damaged during this process. If the opponent does not believe the player made a reasonable effort to randomize their deck, the opponent must notify a judge. Players may request to have a judge shuffle their cards rather than the opponent; this request will be honored only at a judge’s discretion."

As with most tournament things, if something's fishy, call a judge.
>>
>>93796455
>>93796544
Judges should be the ones to shuffle decks in top high level play.

It's a liability issue. In older formats the decks are worth thousands of dollars even before you get into foils and rare printings, so you don't want to implement a rule that requires an event employee to regularly handle them. It's dubious that it's okay to have a rule stating that another player gets to handle your cards, and mandating judges to do it is another level of risk that WotC wants to avoid.

You don't know how badly I wish they would stop fucking around and just create a universal stocking counter so we could stop dealing with all of these different worthless parasitic counters. Oil counters are the most obvious one that comes to mind. I know they don't want to just use charge counters for everything because they're supposed to be restricted to artifacts, but why the fuck not? It would make it so that there's some actual design/brewing space for shit outside of just being able to proliferate.
>>
>>93797143
It's one thing if you create a special type of counter for one card to make the ability more flavorful, but I agree. At the very least, they shouldn't make a set-wide counter/token mechanic unless it's going to be used in more than one set.

>you get what you fucking deserve
A real magic set would be nice for once.
>>
>>93798777
It is a little odd because it means that characters like the cheerleader thus come from a DIFFERENT 80s-adjacent plane than Duskmourn. Diegetically it's a little awkward.
>>
>>93798992
>drawing a card is way better than manifesting dread

It's not
>>
>>93798965
The actual problem is that they've way too much synergy.
>multiple creatures with a "deals damage equal to its power when it dies" ability
>trample/evasion is trivial to access
>tons of prowess and super prowess creatures (e.g. SSS)
>Burn Together to double (or even triple up) the damage after combat or to get in damage before combat to bypass blockers
>>
>>93799097
they've printed way too much synergy*
>>
>>93799064
No, that's just a depiction of a survivor from an earlier point in time where there were still cheerleaders because the house had just started to consume the Plane. Not every card art has to depict a contemporary event or person
>>
>>93799097
Giant Growth isn't playable unless it gives some crazy payoff. You need those synergies for pump spends to be relevant outside of limited.
>>
>>93799064
They very clearly just designed with tropes in mind and everything else was an afterthought. Valgavoth keeps the dwindling survivors around to harness their fear but will kill them, so they're constantly on the move to stay alive. There seemingly aren't any settlements so when would there ever be time for them to hunker down and reproduce? Realistically no one should remember Duskmourne pre-house, or if they do it should be through oblique and misunderstood folklore. It feels like it was written as if the Omenpaths have always existed, but someone seemingly caught the error and made vague reference to the demon being able to open small portals to other worlds, ignoring the obvious issue this presents since, if MoM is anything to go by, the rest of the multiverse is full of serious badasses who would effortlessly fuck up his spooky AI-art monsters. If anything, Duskmourn should look like the multiverse's dumping ground: a haunted house with trinkets from every world and the bones of their former owners.
>>
>>93798744
I'm with this guy. Sure, the entire point of this set is that Valgavoth has gotten tired of his herd of natives and is reaching out to other planes for fresh victims. Even so, I resent even the suggestion that one of the planes it's targeting has high schools with cheerleaders and varsity bullshit
>>
>>93799168
This makes some semblance of sense but we have no reason to assume as such. Most cards in a set are roughly in the same timeframe.
>>93799186
Which feels annoying because, like, there's elements of the 80s horror stuff that works. I don't mind the survivors looking like they're from the 80s. They should just... Not look like they're JUST from the 80s. Want a cheerleader? Okay, make her a cheerleader with pom-poms that have knives at the end, make her at least look like somebody who's SURVIVED in this house, not just an 80s-movie cheerleader. The way this setting is built naturally restricts how you can use some 80s-movie tropes, so either don't use them, or implement them in a way that fits. This is neither. Undead Sprinter is a similar issue but because he could've died whenever it's not AS bad.

I attack with cacophony scamp and cast two copies of turn inside out, dome you for 14 and make two 2/2

This is a thing that is going to be happening on turn 2 in standard for the next three years ;^)
>>
>>93799214
>Cheerleader
Rakdos cultists, Nayan matca-cheerers, hell Kamigawa probably has sports
>Jock
Basically any culture with a martial tradition practices wrestling: Gruul, Theros, Zhalfir, etc. etc.
>Nerd
Literally any plane with wizards (so all of them)

If they'd really played up the people trapping, you could have had a world that's actually an amalgamation of random survivors who would fit the roles thematically if not literally. The fixation on pushing the 80s as literally as possible sank this plane.
>>
>>93799186
>when would there ever be time for them to hunker down and reproduce?
They don't reproduce, new survivors are kidnapped. If I remember right, the house fucks with their memories so that they slowly forget their past and eventually start thinking they were Duskmourn natives.
>no one should remember Duskmourne pre-house, or if they do it should be through oblique and misunderstood folklore
Isn't this already the case?
> the rest of the multiverse is full of serious badasses who would effortlessly fuck up his spooky AI-art monsters
I think the difference is that in MoM it was an invasion, people are usually eager to defend their homes. Meanwhile Valgavoth stealing some people is a much smaller scale thing and not everyone will notice or even care.
>>
>>93799252
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>
if you play red you are simply bad at magic, no discussion allowed.
>>
>>93799182
True, but once you start printing too many payoffs and pumps that play into those payoffs, the strategy becomes more consistent and more powerful. Pumping Cacophony Scamp for a one-shot was cute when it was a relatively fragile plan that relied mostly on the opponent neglecting to block the scamp. It's less cute when there's back ups and it's not so fragile anymore.

Cards like this make it look like Valgavoth just happened fucking yesterday. I forgot about the memory alteration, but that seems like another cheap handwave to justify the 80s shit. If Valgavoth harvests negative emotions, why wouldn't he remind them of exactly where they're from so they become more and more desperate for escape?
>>

Or it simply isn't something he can do cross-plane, as of yet. The implication that he MIGHT be able to with Loot is meant to be the big "oh fuck" thing going on, but who knows.
>>
>>93799881
This is Valgavoth's current objective? He has his doors pulling in people from other planes, he's culling the current population of Duskmourn since he's less reliant on them, and he explicitly tells the Wanderer he's going to vore Kamigawa next as punishment for defying him. Duskmourn's story ends with him temporarily wounded so he has to stop to heal, and still readying to expand over the Multiverse.

>He has his doors pulling in people from other planes, he's culling the current population of Duskmourn since he's less reliant on them, and he explicitly tells the Wanderer he's going to vore Kamigawa next as punishment for defying him.

His power isn't infinite. He can warp the House pretty much freely as-is, but to expand it takes power and time and effort. He gains power from feeding on fear. He's currently stockpiling to try and make his big play. He's not omnipotent. Even in the House he was able to suffer a severe enough wound that he had to flee. He also can't COMPLETELY re-arrange the House on a whim. It takes time to shift and change.

>but to expand it takes power and time and effort.

I'm tired of
>It was a freak occurrence
>Villain grabs the idiot ball

Monored prowess will run this mainboard since it dodges almost all prowess/valiant creatures that have three toughness after prowess triggers
